The Highest Stakes Data Visualizations: Climate Change Data, Nabeha Sajid, Kathryn Glasgow, Shaquan Coombs

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

This study examines how design elements of data visualizations affect attention and urgency toward climate change. Specifically, we focused on climate crisis data visualizations, adjusting the position of key takeaways and manipulating images to amplify the message. Our experimental conditions enabled us to show how viewers interpreted the climate data visualizations and how viewers engaged with the visualizations. In our study, we utilized eye-tracking technology to gain insights into how participants process information while observing the impact on viewer attitudes via surveys. The outcomes help us recommend the best ways to present climate change visualizations to capture viewers' attention.

Informative Integration Of Modern Spolia In Public Landscapes, Deniz Üçer Erduran Apr 2025

Informative Integration Of Modern Spolia In Public Landscapes, Deniz Üçer Erduran

Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies

Spolia refers to repurposing components from older buildings into new constructions, a concept with a rich history. Traditionally, unique components were the primary focus; however, this ap- proach remains relevant today for mass-produced components. By diverting materials from waste streams, spolia preserves their inherent properties and facilitates the rapid transfer of stylistic fea- tures in the modern world. When a 1970s movie theatre in Moscow, Russia, was demolished in 2019, a substantial amount of steel was recycled, while brick and concrete were sent to landfills. This study investigates potential spolia options as an alternative to demolition. The research involved documenting …

Evaluating The Factors Influencing The Sustainable Refrigerant Selection By Fuzzy Decision Making Approach, Mehmet Seyhan, Ertuğrul Ayyıldız, Melike Erdogan

Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies

Considering that cooling in cooling systems is more costly than heating, the importance of refrigerant selection in cooling systems is even more obvious. Due to the complexity of the refrigerant selection problem, a multi-criteria decision approach must be used to implement a thorough and organized evaluation of the factors. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the criteria to be considered when choosing refrigerants using the interval type-2 trapezoidal fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). As a result, the most important and least crucial refrigerant selection criteria are determined by calculating the weights and obtaining the ranking of the requirements. …

Synthesis Of Macrocyclization Cyclophanes And Their Metal Complexes, Characterization And Antimicrobial Activity, Murat Turkyilmaz, Murat Dönmez, Murat Ates

Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies

Due to their chemical properties, cyclophane-type compounds constitute an interesting organic chemistry class. In the structure of all cyclic compounds, macrocyclization is the most critical issue for high-efficiency synthesis. Especially with a small cyclophane structure, the experimental steps are more complicated than with a prominent cyclophane structure. In this manuscript, three different material groups were applied to synthesize silver cyclophane compounds for smart drug properties. In the first material group, 5,6-dimetil-1H-benzo[d] imidazole (1) and 2,6-bis(chloromethyl)pyridine (2) were reacted to form 5,6-dimethyl-1- ((6-((5,6-dimethyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-1-il)methyl)pyridine-2-il)methyl)-1H-benzo[d] imidazole compound (3). In the second material group, ethyl 2-bromoacetate (4) reacted to different nitrogen atoms of the …

Current Construction And Demolition Waste Management Strategies For Philippine Construction Sector – A Systematic Literature Review, Erold Dimaculangan Apr 2025

Current Construction And Demolition Waste Management Strategies For Philippine Construction Sector – A Systematic Literature Review, Erold Dimaculangan

Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies

The construction industry continues to be one of the primary drivers of a country's economic progress. As of 2022, the Philippines’ construction sector had an annual growth rate of 9.2% and continues to increase due to the Build! Build! Build! (BBB) program. However, the construction sector is globally known for regularly consuming more raw materials, resulting in natural resource scarcity and environmental implications. Construction activities also generated a massive volume of construction waste from construction, demolition, and renovation. The need to impose construction and demolition waste (CDW) management strategies and policies in all stages of construction is crucial in attaining …

An Evaluation Of Vertical Dynamic Stress Attenuation For Compacted Coarse-Grained Soils, Kuangbiao Sun, Mingjing Fang, Donglin Shu, Yang Pu, Wenbing Wang

Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies

Coarse-grained soil (CGS), as a filler with the characteristics of high bearing capacity but difficult compaction for embankment construction, requires an appropriate thickness of a single compaction layer according to the influence depth of vertical dynamic stress. In this paper, a numerical analysis using PFC2D was conducted by following a scale model test with different particle gradations of compacted CGS fillers by adopting a modified PFWD. The results show that the influence depth is about 50 cm under the impact maximum stress 0.066 MPa if defined the depth as the maximum stress attenuation to 20%. The compacted CGS filler with …

Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies

In this study, theophylline (1) compounds were synthesized with addition of 2-bromoetha-nol, 2-bromoacetamide and methyl-2-bromoacetate to attain symmetric connections to NHCs (2a–c). New complexes containing the symmetric N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands were synthesized using azolium salts in dimethyl formamide (DMF). After the NHC predecessor compounds reacted with Ag O, Ag(I)-NHC complexes were synthesized in the following: 7,9-di-(2-hydroxyethyl)-8,9-dihydro-1,3-dimethyl-1H-purine-2,6(3H,7H)-dionedium silver(I)bromide (3a), 7,9-di(acetamide)-8,9-dihydro-1,3-dimethyl-1H-purine-2,6(3H,7H)-di-ondium silver(I)bromide (3b) and 7,9-di(methylacetate)-8,9-dihydro-1,3-dimethyl-1H-pu-rine-2,6(3H,7H)-diondiumsilver(I)bromide (3c). Both synthesized NHC predecessors (2a-c) and Ag(I)-NHC complexes (3a-c) were described by FTIR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, liquid and solid-state conductivity values, TGA analysis, melting point analysis and XRD spectroscopy. In-vitro antibacterial activities of NHC-predecessors and Ag(I)-NHC …

Organizational Policy Initiatives For A Neurodiverse Workforce, Renae Taylor Apr 2025

Organizational Policy Initiatives For A Neurodiverse Workforce, Renae Taylor

ATU Scholars Symposium

Neurodivergent individuals make up a significant percentage of the population and yet lag in employment due to employment barriers of the traditional workplace. While the benefits of a diverse workplace are well documented, there is still a large deficit when it comes to neurodiversity equitable access. To attract and retain a neurodiverse workforce, organizations must make changes that align with research-backed methods for policy building and in turn change the organizational leadership focus to a transformational, growth-based framework.

This applied project focuses on organizational policy initiatives that support the neurodivergent employee, with an emphasis on accommodations and modifications, inclusion, and …
