Overt Representation And Subtle Clues A Study Of Queer Book Descriptions In English, Croatian, And Serbian, Rachael Phillips May 2025

Overt Representation And Subtle Clues A Study Of Queer Book Descriptions In English, Croatian, And Serbian, Rachael Phillips

Book Publishing Final Research Papers

Most commonly, a book description is the first contact one has with the contents of a book. It is the elevator pitch on the back of the book or the Amazon page that tries to sell you your next read among literally millions of competitors. In book publishing terms, a book description is a piece of metadata that follows the book throughout its marketing life. It is usually a one to three paragraph description of the book, including the setting, main characters, and some (spoiler-free) plot summary, but also usually includes themes and tone, comparative titles, and potentially author background …

"They Gave Me One Star?" An Analysis Of Online Reviews Of Hand Surgeons, Stephen J Demartini, Brendan J Navarro, Christopher J Dy

2020-Current year OA Pubs

PURPOSE: Measures of patient satisfaction are growing in importance. Patients can use online review websites as opportunities to both praise and criticize their physicians and health care experience. We examined "one star" reviews of American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) members, with the hypothesis that the types of complaints would differ based on patient management and physician gender (based on social identity).

METHODS: We assembled a list of ASSH members in the Midwest region using the ASSH "Find a Hand Surgeon" tool. We then screened three online physician rating websites, including Yelp.com, Healthgrades.com, and Vitals.com, for physician profiles …

The Development Of A Trauma Interventional Radiology Alert Protocol Reduces Time To Vessel Puncture In Cases Of Active Hemorrhage., Aahad Khan, Akhil Gangisetty, Steve Mitchell, Nick Daughtery, Brent Goslin, William B Devoe, John Bach

Trauma and Acute Care Articles

Introduction Trauma continues to be a major cause of death in the United States, with uncontrolled bleeding contributing to a significant portion of trauma-related fatalities. In recent years, the management of hemorrhagic trauma patients has expanded to include interventional radiology (IR). The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma recommends that Level 1 and 2 trauma centers ensure IR availability within 60 minutes of the decision to proceed with angiography. Delays in IR intervention are associated with poorer outcomes and increased mortality. To address this, our Level 2 trauma center developed and implemented an institutional protocol involving trauma surgeons, interventional …

Information Content Of An Open Limit-Order Book: Indian Evidence, Mayank Gupta, Saurabh Kumar May 2025

Information Content Of An Open Limit-Order Book: Indian Evidence, Mayank Gupta, Saurabh Kumar

American Business Review

Using the 5-year period (2014-18) limit-order book and trade book data from NSE, this paper investigates the contribution of an open limit-order book towards price discovery and market efficiency. In particular, the paper examines two interesting questions: (a) the information content of the limit-order book beyond the best prices and (b) the order submission choices of informed traders. The results indicate that the deeper levels of the order book significantly contribute to short-term return predictability, even after controlling for the return autocorrelations, volume, and trade imbalances. Furthermore, this return predictability is time-varying and relatively high around lower quantiles of the …

Aligning Firm Capabilities And Business Environment In A Managerial Context: Evidence From The 2016 Presidential Election And Dodd-Frank Rollback, Luis A. Perez-Batres, Abu Amin, Len J. Treviño, Khawaja Mamun

American Business Review

Studies examining firm capabilities under abrupt discontinuities are scarce. To contribute to this literature, we focus on the effect of matching firm capabilities to business environments. In doing so, we explore strategic and environmental alignment and its impact on firm performance within the banking industry before and after the 2016 presidential election. We demonstrate that firm capabilities need to match a specific environment to attain a competitive advantage. However, these same capabilities are not necessarily the source of a competitive advantage in a different environment. Specifically, we find that during the post-election era (the Dodd-Frank rollback era), the group of …

Emotion Analysis And Topic Modelling Of Supply Chain Discussion During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Suhong Li, Fang Chen, Thomas Ngniatedema

American Business Review

This study aims to investigate the supply chain discussion during the COVID-19 pandemic using the supply chain tweets collected between March 2020 and May 2022 globally. The findings reveal an evolving sentiment trajectory: while the users’ sentiment remained neutral in 2020 and 2021, a negative sentiment surged starting in January 2022. Moreover, an emotion analysis indicates a mix of sadness and optimism among Twitter users, with anger gradually intensifying from June 2021 onward. Furthermore, topic modeling reveals distinct themes discussed each year. In 2020, major topics centered around the government’s response to COVID-19, food and medical supply chain crises. By …

Connectedness Between Music Tokens And Major Asset Classes: Implications For Hedging And Investments Strategies, Ritesh Patel, Muhammad Zubair Chishti, Sun-Yong Choi

American Business Review

This study examines the dynamic connectedness between four music tokens, that is, Audius, CEEK, ROCKI and Viberate and major asset classes, namely, equity, bond, crude oil, Gold, Bitcoin and USD. We used daily data from December 23, 2020, to August 30, 2024. We measure the connectedness using the quantile VAR method and the wavelet quantile correlation approach. The quantile VAR method reveals that assets play receiver and transmitter roles. However, the assets hold a weak relationship, indicating the opportunity for portfolio diversification. Further, the results of wavelet quantile correlation also discovered negative or no relationship among major assets, revealing the …

Green Hotels And Loyal Guests: The Csr Effect In Poland’S Tourism Sector, Maria Johann, Sanjoy Ghose, Ahmed Bostani

American Business Review

While the relationship between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and consumer behavior has gained increased interest in the hotel industry over the years, some of its nuanced effects remain insufficiently explored, especially in a post-pandemic world. Thus, the objective of this study is to assess how environmental CSR and social CSR activities influence consumer responses, namely customer satisfaction and customer loyalty in the hotel industry. The questionnaire was distributed online through a professional research agency. The data were gathered from 560 respondents who spent their holidays in Poland in hotels that implemented socially responsible activities. PLS-SEM was used for data analysis. …

Strategy As What A Business Should Do Over Time To Succeed: A Case Study Of Tesla, Inc, Murali Chari, Vitor Fernandes M. Ferreira May 2025

Strategy As What A Business Should Do Over Time To Succeed: A Case Study Of Tesla, Inc, Murali Chari, Vitor Fernandes M. Ferreira

American Business Review

Why businesses succeed or fail is a central question in strategy. Extant literature is well developed in explaining the relative success of firms at a point in time. There is not as much known, however, about what a business should do over time to succeed. We begin to address this gap with a study of Tesla, Inc. Following recommendations to ensure reliability and validity (Gibbert et al., 2008), we study how Tesla succeeded as a startup in the capital and scale intensive industry, when the relevant technology and supporting infrastructure were nonexistent. We contrast Tesla with its competitors to draw …

Fits Like A Glove: Seinfeld And The Economics Of Liability Laws, Franklin G. Mixon Jr., Shane D. Sanders, R. Andrew Luccasen Iii

American Business Review

Informal case applications often enhance our understanding of an economic principle’s breadth of import in everyday life, as well as whether the principle may be acknowledged and used in a manner that facilitates decision-making of businesses and consumers. The present study contributes to the case study literature by extending the work of others on the economics of the classic television sit-com, Seinfeld. More specifically, our extension focuses on several law and economics concepts, particularly concepts related to product liability, included in the sit-com that are of particular interest to businesses and consumers.

While cellular proteins exist in a dynamic state maintained by the balance of synthesis and degradation, there is a paucity of information on these processes in placental trophoblasts, including within cytotrophoblasts which differentiate into multi-nucleate syncytiotrophoblasts. TFEB, a transcription factor with a myriad of cellular activities, is one of the most abundant genes expressed in syncytiotrophoblasts compared to cytotrophoblasts. TFEB is localized to the nucleus of human BeWo differentiated syncytiotrophoblasts and to the cytoplasm of the undifferentiated cytotrophoblasts. Within both the cytotrophoblasts and syncytiotrophoblasts, TFEB exists in subcellular compartments as both phosphorylated and unphosphorylated forms and translocates between cytoplasm and …

Elevated P16ink4a Expression Enhances Tau Phosphorylation In Neurons Differentiated From Human-Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells, Kristopher Holloway, Kashfia Neherin, Yingduo Song, Kazuhito Sato, Andrew Houston, Feng Chen, Li Ding, Hong Zhang

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Increased expression of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p16Ink4a (p16) is detected in neurons of human Alzheimer's disease (AD) brains and during normal aging. Importantly, selective eliminating p16-expressing cells in AD mouse models attenuates tau pathologies and improves cognition. But whether and how p16 contributes to AD pathogenesis remains unclear. To address this question, we tested whether induction of p16 expression in neurons exacerbates AD pathologies. We created a doxycycline-inducible system to trigger p16 up-regulation in human-induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and neurons differentiated from iPSCs. We demonstrated that up-regulated p16 expression in iPSCs reduces cell proliferation, down-regulates cell cycle genes, …

Brain Morphometry In Infants Later Diagnosed With Autism Is Related To Later Language Skills, Luke E Moraglia, Kelly N Botteron, Natasha Marrus, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) presents early in life with distinct social and language differences. This study explores the association between infant brain morphometry and language abilities using an infant-sibling design. Participants included infants who had an older sibling with autism (high likelihood, HL) who were later diagnosed with autism (HL-ASD; n = 31) and two non-autistic control groups: HL-Neg (HL infants not diagnosed with autism; n = 126) and LL-Neg (typically developing infants who did not have an older sibling with autism; n = 77). Using a whole-brain approach, we measured cortical thickness and surface area at 6 and 12 …

Gdf15 Links Adipose Tissue Lipolysis With Anxiety, Logan K Townsend, Léa J Becker, Jordan G Mccall, Et Al. May 2025

Gdf15 Links Adipose Tissue Lipolysis With Anxiety, Logan K Townsend, Léa J Becker, Jordan G Mccall, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Psychological stress changes both behaviour and metabolism to protect organisms. Adrenaline is an important driver of this response. Anxiety correlates with circulating free fatty acid levels and can be alleviated by a peripherally restricted β-blocker, suggesting a peripheral signal linking metabolism with behaviour. Here we show that adrenaline, the β3 agonist CL316,243 and acute restraint stress induce growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) secretion in white adipose tissue of mice. Genetic inhibition of adipose triglyceride lipase or genetic deletion of β-adrenergic receptors blocks β-adrenergic-induced increases in GDF15. Increases in circulating GDF15 require lipolysis-induced free fatty acid stimulation of M2-like macrophages within …

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This observational cohort study was conducted between November 1, 2020, and April 15, 2024, among participants aged 65 years or older with unimpaired cognition and available biomarker data (apolipoprotein E genotype and …

Trade Integration, Petros C. Mavroidis May 2025

Trade Integration, Petros C. Mavroidis

Faculty Scholarship

Accounts concerning the world trading system usually start the debate from the negotiation of the GATT. Trade integration before the First World War, though, had been quite remarkable, and the study of this era enriches our understanding of modern institutions in at least two ways. First, a number of GATT provisions had already been shaped during discussions following the advent of the League of Nations. Second, trade integration before the First World War did not manage to put a brake on belligerent behaviour, putting to rest the old Montesquieuan idea of doux commerce. Recent developments (like the invasion of …

Administrative Law And The Pandemic, Gillian E. Metzger May 2025

Administrative Law And The Pandemic, Gillian E. Metzger

Faculty Scholarship

American administrative law’s relationship to change is, as they say, complicated. On the one hand, continual evolution has been an endemic feature of American administrative law. Doctrines such as Chevron deference to agency statutory interpretations were born, grew, and declined in just the period from the 1980s to today. On the other, the United States (US) Supreme Court regularly rejects such common law development in administrative law as illegitimate and insists that federal judges must adhere to the original terms of the 1946 Administrative Procedure Act (APA) and other statutes, unless the Constitution requires otherwise. And to this day scholars …

The Right To Grow Old, Jamal Greene May 2025

The Right To Grow Old, Jamal Greene

Faculty Scholarship

This chapter considers the status of a constitutional “right to grow old” under the US Constitution. Understood as a “positive” right – ensuring a certain minimum quality of life to people as they face the challenges of aging – such a right may seem unavailing given the austerity in respect to such rights that many lawyers associate with the US constitutional tradition. This chapter shows this view to be premature, at least. Unlike the kinds of positive rights overtly rejected in prior cases, such as rights to certain forms of social welfare or to racial equality, a right to grow …

Not Right Now: Factors Affecting Interruption Decisions In A Healthcare Paradigm, Matthew G. Pacailler May 2025

Not Right Now: Factors Affecting Interruption Decisions In A Healthcare Paradigm, Matthew G. Pacailler

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Interruptions are common in the workplace, but when they happen during high-stakes critical tasks, they can have serious consequences. In the field of healthcare, interruptions can lead to serious adverse events or medication errors. Research on interruption management strategies addresses the potentially harmful outcomes of interruptions but often fails to account for the initial decision to accept or reject the interrupting task. Two experiments were performed to examine the decision-making outcomes for interruptions.

In experiment I, the participants monitored two EKG displays while simultaneously entering medication information into a patient chart. The decision to accept or reject an interruption was …

Investigating The Ability To Perceive Nonverbal Behaviors In Different Interaction Formats, Amanda J. Ashdown May 2025

Investigating The Ability To Perceive Nonverbal Behaviors In Different Interaction Formats, Amanda J. Ashdown

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The rapid rise in interactive video-based communication has raised important questions about how it affects the perception of nonverbal behavior and impression formation. Guided by the Parallel Process Model (PPM), Multiple Resource Theory (MRT), and Working Memory (WM) models, this study investigated the ability of individuals to observe and assess another person’s nonverbal behaviors and form accurate impressions during conversations in live, face-to-face interactions compared to virtual formats. The study employed a 2 (interaction format: live vs. virtual; within-subjects) × 2 (observation type: active vs. passive; between-subjects) × 2 (genuineness: genuine vs. nongenuine behavior; between-subjects) mixed design. Participants either actively …

Digital Twins, Synthetic Patient Data, And In-Silico Trials: Can They Empower Paediatric Clinical Trials?, Mohan Pammi, Prakesh S Shah, Liu K Yang, Joseph Hagan, Nima Aghaeepour, Josef Neu

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Randomised controlled trials are the gold standard to assess the effectiveness and safety of clinical interventions; however, many paediatric trials are discontinued early due to challenges in patient enrolment. Hence, most paediatric clinical trials suffer from lack of adequate power. Additionally, trials are expensive and might expose patients to unproven therapies. Alternatives to overcome these issues using virtual patient data—namely, digital twins, synthetic patient data, and in-silico trials—are now possible due to rapid advances in digital health-care tools and interventions. However, such digital innovations have been rarely used in paediatric trials. In this Viewpoint, we propose using virtual patient data …
