(Un)Supervised Translation: How Fans Fill In The Gaps In Visual Novel Localization, Sara Raffel, Mónica G. González Burgos Jul 2026

(Un)Supervised Translation: How Fans Fill In The Gaps In Visual Novel Localization, Sara Raffel, Mónica G. González Burgos

ELO (un)supervised 2026

A translator must consider multiple cultural contexts when translating a work of electronic literature; no longer concerned only with the text, they might need to examine images, platform, interactivity, and the code itself. As identified by Przbyszewska, translating works of e-lit can require attention to the code and platform of a work, with the extent dictated by “the interaction inherent in the semantics of the text” (28). Meanwhile, Marecki and Montfort differentiate e-lit translation from its traditional literary counterpart because the translator is no longer “invisible” where e-lit is involved (90). This presentation extends this discussion of e-lit translation to …

System And Method For Tracking And Identifying The Source Of Refractory Inclusions In Metal Products, Don Allen Doutre, Philip Meslage, Patrick Pouly, John Robert Buster Mccallum

Defensive Publications Series

Refractory inclusions caused by the degradation of materials used in the handling, filtration, flow control, and processing of molten metals, especially aluminum, are a persistent challenge that conventional analytical techniques struggle to trace. Refractory inclusions are a non-metallic particle or fragment that originates from the degradation or erosion of refractory materials used to line and contain molten metals, which subsequently becomes entrained in metal products and can lead to defects or compromised material properties. Refractory applications may be used in a range of processing and fluid-handling systems, including using grid plates in the bottom of deep bed filters that act …

Dynamic Cascades In Hyper-Connected Geopolitical Systems: Quantifying Attrition Wave Mechanics And Resonance Stabilization Paths Toward Type 1 Civilizational Metrics, Christopher L. Eckes Jul 2026

Dynamic Cascades In Hyper-Connected Geopolitical Systems: Quantifying Attrition Wave Mechanics And Resonance Stabilization Paths Toward Type 1 Civilizational Metrics, Christopher L. Eckes

Defensive Publications Series

Modern global security architectures behave not as isolated friction points, but as a fluid, hyper-connected ecosystem. When a high-friction decision or structural error occurs within a single systemic node, it generates a kinetic wave that propagates throughout the entire network, building destructive momentum as it strikes secondary institutional vulnerabilities. This paper introduces a rigorous, quantitative framework for mapping these interconnected crises.

By defining an 18-Month Continuous Friction Engine and deploying object-oriented system dynamics modeling, we evaluate how global stability degrades when states systematically trade technical and operational merit for ideological compliance. We anchor our wave mechanics calculations in empirical, real-world …

Coaching One's Own Child: An Ethnographic Study Of Parent-Coach Experiences In Youth Sport, Dr. Sandra Alspach, Dr. Jon Coles

Findings in Sport, Hospitality, Entertainment, and Event Management

Over 27 million children in the United States are playing youth sports.  Many of those youth are being coached by their own parent. Although this phenomenon is commonplace, little research has been done to study how parent-coaches balance their dual roles.  To better understand communication, roles, and relationship dynamics in youth sports environments, this study examined the experiences of parent-coaches and their athlete children. There were two ethnographic investigations. In the first, 76 participants (34 parent-coaches and 42 child-athletes) ranging from age 8 to age 80 participated in semi-structured Zoom interviews. Personal networks and snowball sampling were used to invite …

Building Minnesota's Teacher Workforce From Within: Policy Recommendations To Expand Grow Your Own Teacher Pathways In Minnesota, Jennifer Maras Jul 2026

Building Minnesota's Teacher Workforce From Within: Policy Recommendations To Expand Grow Your Own Teacher Pathways In Minnesota, Jennifer Maras

The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning

Minnesota faces persistent teacher shortages driven by declining enrollment in teacher preparation programs, high early-career attrition, retirements, demographic shifts, and barriers to entering the profession. Traditional recruitment efforts alone are insufficient to meet the state's long-term workforce needs. This white paper proposes Grow Your Own (GYO) teacher pathways as a sustainable workforce development strategy that cultivates future educators from within Minnesota's own schools and communities. Rather than relying primarily on external recruitment, GYO initiatives intentionally develop local talent by creating accessible pathways for high school students, paraprofessionals, career changers, and community members to become licensed teachers.

Grounded in current workforce …

Breaking The Mold: An Examination Of Student Perceptions With Faculty-Led Native American Student Research Experiences, Caitlin A. Johnson Jul 2026

Breaking The Mold: An Examination Of Student Perceptions With Faculty-Led Native American Student Research Experiences, Caitlin A. Johnson

The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning

In recent years, Native American students in Minnesota have experienced the state’s widest equity gap. In response, a faculty advisor guided students through an immersive Indigenous research experience using the medicine wheel as a learning model focused on culturally relevant topics. Culturally relevant teaching uses methods and techniques that are building from a student’s interests, values, and strengths helps them to have a more meaningful educational experience by connecting home with school (Gay, 2000). Grounded in culturally relevant teaching theory, this approach connects students’ lived experiences to academic learning, making the exploration of equity gaps particularly meaningful for Indigenous students …

Provocable Forgiveness In Noisy Brand--Consumer Systems:An Agent-Based Study Of Repeated Interaction, Tahere Ahmadiyan, Hamidreza Navidi, Behbod Keshavarzi Jul 2026

Provocable Forgiveness In Noisy Brand--Consumer Systems:An Agent-Based Study Of Repeated Interaction, Tahere Ahmadiyan, Hamidreza Navidi, Behbod Keshavarzi

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

Repeated brand--consumer exchange is often treated as a managerial problem of loyalty, recovery, and trust. It can also be read as a small complex system: many local decisions about cooperation, retaliation, and forgiveness accumulate into market-level selection. This study uses that perspective to examine which relational rules survive when communication is imperfect. Eight canonical Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma strategies are translated into marketing archetypes and evaluated through round-robin tournaments, a six-level noise sweep, proportional-fitness ecological dynamics, and finite-population Moran invasion tests. The tournament leaderboard is calculated without same-strategy self-play, so that reported payoffs reflect inter-archetype competition rather than homogeneous self-coordination. At …

An Agent-Based System For Optimizing Webpage Content For Automated Information Retrieval, Lenord Melvix Jul 2026

An Agent-Based System For Optimizing Webpage Content For Automated Information Retrieval, Lenord Melvix

Defensive Publications Series

A challenge may arise for automated information retrieval systems, such as generative artificial intelligence applications, when parsing webpages designed primarily for human visual consumption, potentially leading to incomplete or inaccurate responses to user queries. To address this, systems and methods can employ a multi-agent framework to optimize webpage content. The system can parse a webpage, generate a set of potential user queries, and identify informational gaps by determining which queries are not answered by the page's existing content. A business representative can then provide verified answers for these gaps, which an agent can programmatically embed into the webpage's source code …

Dynamic Transaction Authorization Using Continuous Analysis Of Tokenized Behavioral Data, Sree Sitamahalakshmi Moguluru Jul 2026

Dynamic Transaction Authorization Using Continuous Analysis Of Tokenized Behavioral Data, Sree Sitamahalakshmi Moguluru

Defensive Publications Series

Static, point-in-time transaction validation methods may be susceptible to in-session fraud, such as account takeovers, and can impose friction on legitimate users. To support continuous transaction authorization, systems and methods can analyze tokenized behavioral data. On a user device (e.g., a smartphone, smart watch, or wearable device), hardware sensors can capture behavioral data that is converted into privacy-preserving tokens before transmission to a server. A server-side infrastructure may use these tokens to build a real-time behavioral model for a session. During a transaction, this model can be compared to a user's historical baseline to compute a dynamic confidence score. This …

Delegate Framework For Decoupling Navigation Ui Generation And Layout, Rakhi Parekh, Pratyush Kshirsagar, Leo Hourvitz, Nick Demeuse, Kaitlyn Christensen, Aakanksha Parameshwar, Tingting Li, Mitil Jawale

Defensive Publications Series

The integration of a navigation software development kit (SDK) into a third-party application can present challenges related to the coupling of user interface (UI) element generation and layout logic, which may result in spatial conflicts and layout inflexibility. Systems and techniques are described for a delegate framework that can decouple UI generation from its placement. In this framework, a navigation SDK may manage the navigation state and, upon detecting a state change, can generate immutable state objects containing UI views or associated data. These objects may be passed to a delegate implemented by the host application, which can then be …

The Significance Of Medical Terminology In The Arabic 111 Course At King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University For Health Sciences (Ksau-Hs): An Analytical Pragmatic Study, Nuwair Abdullah Khalaf Al-Anzi

UB Journal for Humanities

Medical terminology in the “Arab 111” curriculum varies in its use within the educational context, which may affect students’ comprehension and understanding. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the suitability of these terms from a pragmatic perspective and their relationship to the effectiveness of scientific communication. Medical terminology possesses multiple contextual dimensions and is not confined solely to the scientific context among physicians, patients, and society. Pragmatics thus focuses on the way these terms are employed in everyday communication, since their circulation requires simplification to suit non-specialists. Moreover, misunderstanding medical terminology may lead to errors in diagnosis or treatment, making …

How Rude?: Prohibitions On Insults And Abuse In International Human Rights Complaint Proceedings, Lisa Reinsberg

Northwestern Journal of Human Rights

May international human rights mechanisms close their doors to individuals who insult their members or Member States? Several do so, but the basis, scope, and impact of such rejections remain mostly unexamined. This article maps the relevant practices of regional and United Nations human rights bodies and compares them to other courts’ responses to contempt of court or vexatious litigation, to understand whether this admissibility criterion is a proper application of the prohibition on abuse of the right of petition or a legitimate exercise of a human rights body’s inherent powers. Three approaches emerge: ignore, balance, and punish. While the …

Overcoming Igf1r-Mediated Resistance To Oncolytic Hsv1 And Radiotherapy Via Triple Combination Therapy, Alexandra A Miller, Min-Hye Noh, Jin Muk Kang, Jiyeon Kim, Lily Nguyen, Amanda S Kouaho, Grace Nguyen, Minxin Huang, Stephanie M Bean, Joshua Davis, Matthew P Mullarkey, Sunil Krishnan, Zhongming Zhao, E Antonio Chiocca, Tae Jin Lee, Ji Young Yoo

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

FDA-approved oncolytic herpes simplex virus-1 (oHSV) therapy has emerged as a promising viro-immunotherapy for solid tumors. However, tumor- and tumor microenvironment (TME)-associated adaptations following viral treatment, such as feedback immune suppression, neoangiogenesis, and enhanced tumor aggressiveness, often hinder complete tumor eradication. A deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance to oHSV is crucial to enhancing its clinical impact. We recently discovered that oHSV induces Insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) secretion, shaping an immunosuppressive TME. Similarly, radiotherapy (RTx) activates the IGF1/IGF1R and YAP1 signaling pathways, further promoting therapeutic resistance. In this study, we investigated how oHSV-induced Insulin-like growth factor 1 …
