Reflections On Travel, Antonio García Velasco

SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism

This trip is an invitation to change your life and enrich your customs, to deepen your knowledge and to broaden your own worldview. There are several forms of travel. Travel for pleasure and tourism is not the same as that imposed by personal or socio-political conditions. A distinction must be made between the transfer and the journeyitself. Don Quixote told Sancho that “he who reads a lot and walks a lot sees a lot and knows a lot”. To go, to walk is to travel. And reading, this is the other way of travelling. Currently, a trip without a camera …

A Moroccan Gazeat The Rest Of The World, Mohammed Dekhissi

SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism

The accounts of Moroccan embassies, particularly those of the 17th and 18th centuries, reveal a complex and inextricable discourse. They remain imbued with religious, intellectual and social references and clearly express an experience of univocal otherness, but do not hide the traveler’s amazement - or his fear – about the achievement of the other, at the scientific and technological levels. We will try to explore succinctly what Ibn’Utmân’s description of some Spanish cultural institutions was like. It should be remembered, however, that this is a protocol visit. We will limit ourselves to two examples, that of the theatre and that …

Fostering Integration Of Idd Concepts Into Nursing Curriculums In The United States, Cecily L. Betz, Joyce Carolyn Graff Jul 2026

Fostering Integration Of Idd Concepts Into Nursing Curriculums In The United States, Cecily L. Betz, Joyce Carolyn Graff

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: Curriculum content pertaining to the lifespan needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) is not evident in nursing programs in the United States (US) despite national statistics that indicate 17% of the U.S. population are identified as having IDD [1-3]. Beginning with the Kennedy Administration in the 1960s, the U.S. federal government has made significant investments to improve services for the IDD population through the establishment of interdisciplinary educational networks, such as the University Centers for Excellence in Development Disabilities (UCEDD) and Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) [2]. For nurses interested in IDD specialty …

Closing The Gap: Canadian Undergraduate Nursing Students’ Competencies And Training Needs In Idd, Lin Li, Yona Lunsky, Anupam Thakur, Soumya Mishra, Nagyeong Kim, Gurmanpreet Kaur

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face persistent health inequities, including higher morbidity, premature mortality, and increased healthcare use [1–3]. These disparities are intensified by limited provider training and confidence in caring for this population [4,5], underscoring the need to strengthen nursing education in IDD. This study examined Canadian undergraduate nursing students’ attitudes, competencies, and training needs related to IDD.

Methods: From May-August 2025, a 28-item anonymous online survey was distributed through nursing programs and nursing student societies across Canada. The survey assessed knowledge, attitudes, self-perceived skills, exposure to IDD in coursework and clinical settings, and preferred learning …

Current & Future Priorities In Canadian Pre-Licensure Nursing Education On Care For People With Idd, Anna Don, Janet Mccabe Jul 2026

Current & Future Priorities In Canadian Pre-Licensure Nursing Education On Care For People With Idd, Anna Don, Janet Mccabe

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Using existing literature the audience will be oriented to the current state of pre-licensure nursing education about People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), review priorities identified by People with IDD and nurses, and finally suggest a course for the future nursing education about the care of People with IDD.

The findings of a recent scoping review of international pre-licensure nursing education [1] demonstrated that most education related to people with IDD was episodic at best. More recently a Canadian Delphi study was conducted in which People with IDD and nurses identified priorities for nursing education [2]. Using the current …

Advancing Learning Disability Nursing Education In Scotland, Sam Abdulla, Natasha Spassiani, Amanda Woodrow, Jacqueline Taylor, Valerie Houghton, Kyle Buchan Jul 2026

Advancing Learning Disability Nursing Education In Scotland, Sam Abdulla, Natasha Spassiani, Amanda Woodrow, Jacqueline Taylor, Valerie Houghton, Kyle Buchan

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Across the UK, applications to undergraduate nursing programmes, especially Learning Disability (LD) Nursing have declined significantly (Royal College of Nursing, 2021), resulting in under-recruitment and, in some regions, the closure of LD Nursing programmes (Royal College of Nursing, 2024). This shortage of specialist LD Nurses risks worsening health inequalities for people with LD (House of Commons, 2024). NHS Education Scotland (2023) identified LD Nursing as a workforce priority, highlighting the need for innovation to attract new nurses and maintain high-quality, person-centred care. For those entering programmes, access to varied and appropriate placements remains a challenge due to reduced post-COVID capacity, …

From Burden To Support: Validating An Ai-Based Dementia Care Voice Assistant App, Modupe Akintomide, Xinyue Zhang, Divya Iyer, Madison Ellison, Sumaya Tamenne Jul 2026

From Burden To Support: Validating An Ai-Based Dementia Care Voice Assistant App, Modupe Akintomide, Xinyue Zhang, Divya Iyer, Madison Ellison, Sumaya Tamenne

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

The prevalence of behavioral symptoms, such as wandering and agitation, in over 90% of persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (Pw-ADRD), with approximately 83% residing in home-based settings [1-3], underscores the urgent need for effective interventions to support informal caregivers. These caregivers are essential for maintaining quality care for Pw-ADRD, yet they frequently encounter substantial challenges in managing behavioral symptoms [4], revealing a significant gap in available resources and support systems.

To address this gap, we developed a prototype for an AI-based Dementia Care Voice Assistant (AI-DECAVA), powered by a large language model (LLM). The system is designed to …

Ai-Powered Gamified Extended Reality Training For Dementia Care Competence In Healthcare Students, Modupe Akintomide, Joy Li, Toi-Ann Kingsby, Dandre Williamson Jul 2026

Ai-Powered Gamified Extended Reality Training For Dementia Care Competence In Healthcare Students, Modupe Akintomide, Joy Li, Toi-Ann Kingsby, Dandre Williamson

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

The development of dementia care competence among healthcare students remains limited by the scarcity of experiential training opportunities for managing behavioral and psychological symptoms [1]. Traditional curricula often fail to provide sufficient, high-fidelity practice for the complex, emotionally charged interactions characteristic of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) care [2].

To address this gap, we developed an AI-powered, Gamified Extended Reality (XR) Dementia Behavioral Training App. This immersive platform simulates authentic caregiving encounters with persons living with ADRD. It employs an AI-generated animated patient agent and integrates adaptive difficulty scaling within clinically relevant, scenario-based modules to mirror the complexity of …

Leveraging Ai-Driven Financial Resource Identification In Dementia Caregiving-Development Phase, Modupe Akintomide, Xinyue Zhang, Divya Iyer Jul 2026

Leveraging Ai-Driven Financial Resource Identification In Dementia Caregiving-Development Phase, Modupe Akintomide, Xinyue Zhang, Divya Iyer

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Informal dementia caregiving imposes a substantial financial burden on families, compounded by systemic factors such as insurance coverage gaps, prohibitive long-term care costs, and the administrative complexity of navigating public and private benefit programs [1-2].

To address this challenge, we developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven application designed to streamline access to financial resources. The system is built on a curated dataset that links multidimensional caregiver profiles with relevant financial support programs. Profiles, encoded as input feature vectors, are derived from structured questionnaire responses capturing variables such as employment status, weekly caregiving hours, out-of-pocket medical expenses, and insurance coverage. Each profile …

Reality Check: How Avatar And Face Representation Affect The Perceptual Evaluation Of Synthesized Gestures, Haoyang Du, Yinghan Xu, John Dingliana, Brian Keegan, Rachel Mcdonnell, Cathy Ennis Jul 2026

Reality Check: How Avatar And Face Representation Affect The Perceptual Evaluation Of Synthesized Gestures, Haoyang Du, Yinghan Xu, John Dingliana, Brian Keegan, Rachel Mcdonnell, Cathy Ennis

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

The capacity to create realistic virtual humans has progressed significantly, and such characters can be found in many applications across entertainment, education and health. As an essential element of interactive virtual humans, speech-driven 3D gesture generation still depends heavily on perceptual evaluation, yet studies often vary avatar appearance and facial presentation when judging the generated motions. Prior work suggests these visual choices can bias motion judgments, but controlled evidence remains limited. We address this gap with controlled evaluations of co-speech gestures across motion sources, spanning seven representative avatar renderings used in contemporary research and application pipelines. Our results show that …

Visual-Motor Coordination In Automated Driving: Effects Of Temporal Urgency And Motor Demand On Intervention Behavior, Kailin Cui, Jonathan Chiu, Pranav Meda, Gaojian Huang, Yue Luo Jul 2026

Visual-Motor Coordination In Automated Driving: Effects Of Temporal Urgency And Motor Demand On Intervention Behavior, Kailin Cui, Jonathan Chiu, Pranav Meda, Gaojian Huang, Yue Luo

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Occupational Applications: This study shows that time-critical automation intervention requests increase drivers’ visual-motor demands, reflected in measurable changes in driving performance and posture (i.e., limb engagement and trunk positioning) during transitions of control. These responses indicate that maneuver urgency and takeover timing can place elevated biomechanical and coordination demands on drivers, particularly in work-based automated driving. For ergonomics and human factors practice, the findings underscore the need to design automated transportation systems (e.g., ridesharing services) that align request timing with operators’ physical and perceptual capabilities. In occupational settings such as automated shuttles and fleet-supervised vehicles, intervention requests should provide adequate …

Reproduction Beyond Benchmarks: Constbert And Colbert-V2 Across Backends And Query Distributions, Utshab Kumar Ghosh, Ashish David, Shubham Chatterjee Jul 2026

Reproduction Beyond Benchmarks: Constbert And Colbert-V2 Across Backends And Query Distributions, Utshab Kumar Ghosh, Ashish David, Shubham Chatterjee

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Reproducibility must validate architectural robustness, not just numerical accuracy. We evaluate ColBERT-v2 and ConstBERT across five dimensions, finding that while ConstBERT reproduces within 0.05% MRR@10 on MS-MARCO, both models show a drop of 86-97% on long, narrative queries (TREC ToT 2025). Ablations prove this failure is architectural: performance plateaus at 20 words because the MaxSim operator's uniform token weighting cannot distinguish signal from filler noise. Furthermore, undocumented backend parameters create an 8-point gap due to ConstBERT's sparse centroid coverage, and fine-tuning with 3x more data actually degrades performance by up to 29%. We conclude that architectural constraints in multi-vector retrieval …

Persistent Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy As A Chronic Cancer Pain Syndrome: Mechanisms, Therapeutic Limitations, And Future Directions, Reed Firestone, Jamin Morrison Jul 2026

Persistent Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy As A Chronic Cancer Pain Syndrome: Mechanisms, Therapeutic Limitations, And Future Directions, Reed Firestone, Jamin Morrison

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Background/Objectives: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common, dose-limiting complication of cancer therapy and a major contributor to chronic neuropathic pain among cancer survivors. Although traditionally managed as a treatment-related toxicity, persistent CIPN frequently persists long after chemotherapy completion and is increasingly recognized as a major survivorship and palliative care challenge. This review synthesizes current mechanistic, clinical, and translational evidence and reframes persistent CIPN as a chronic neuropathic cancer pain syndrome. Methods: A narrative review of peer-reviewed literature was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library, supplemented by manual review of key references and clinical guidelines. Emphasis was placed …

Lost Spirits: An Interactive Encounter With A Fractured Soul, Angela Wu Jul 2026

Lost Spirits: An Interactive Encounter With A Fractured Soul, Angela Wu

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Lost Spirits is a game prototype developed in the Godot engine, utilizing Gemini Pro, a Large Language Model (LLM) for rapid code generation and a local Small Language Model (SLM), Gemma 3 4B, to power AI-driven NPCs (non-player characters). The study investigates whether LLMs can democratize game development for non-technical artists and if real-time AI-driven character interaction can sustain a meaningful narrative arc without traditional branching scripts. Preliminary results suggest that AI significantly accelerates the technical pipeline—enabling the development of a functional 3D prototype within a two-month window—and facilitates rich, responsive character interactions.

Jerusalem, City Of David Visitor Center: The Early Islamic, Medieval And Late Ottoman Pottery, Benjamin J. Dolinka Jul 2026

Jerusalem, City Of David Visitor Center: The Early Islamic, Medieval And Late Ottoman Pottery, Benjamin J. Dolinka

Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel

The excavation at the entrance to the Visitor Center in the City of David uncovered a small but significant assemblage of ceramics, all from stratified contexts, including bowls, basins, storage jars, jugs, a cooking pot and a clay tobacco pipe. The pottery dates from the Abbasid period (ninth–tenth centuries CE), the medieval period (mid-twelfth–late fourteenth centuries CE) and the late Ottoman period (mid- to late nineteenth century CE). The ceramic evidence from the excavation provides important insights into the occupational history of the site during these periods.

The Female Voice, The Male Gaze: Ai Colonial Paradox And African Feminist Futures, Aishat Olayetunde Isiaq Mrs Jul 2026

The Female Voice, The Male Gaze: Ai Colonial Paradox And African Feminist Futures, Aishat Olayetunde Isiaq Mrs

ELO (un)supervised 2026

At ELO 2026, I propose to examine the feminization of artificial intelligence as a deliberate design choice rooted in a long history of technology and service labour. From the “Hello Girls” of early telephone switchboards to the default female voices of Siri, Alexa, and contemporary chatbots, technology has repeatedly been paired with performed femininity, framing assistance as innate, emotional, and subservient. This paper will critically analyze the paradoxical gendering of artificial intelligence, in which AI assistants are feminized to evoke care and service, while the algorithmic structures behind these systems remain embedded in patriarchal and colonial logics. Drawing on African …

Reacting To Electronic Literature In Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, Faith Samuel Bassey Jul 2026

Reacting To Electronic Literature In Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, Faith Samuel Bassey

ELO (un)supervised 2026

Electronic literature is still quite new in our country, and we do not have enough manpower to drive a literary or scholarly movement.  We need to introduce these concepts to many people; however, we do not have the people we need who know the field well enough to pass on their passion and prowess to get others enthused about electronic literature.

In this talk, I will describe the ways that I have presented my work, The Water Seller, Mai Ruwa, with Deena Larsen. In October 2025,  I presented this work in an in-person conference in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra …

Vibe Coding: Ai, Digital Text Recycling, And The Remediation Of Digital Poetry, Yohanna Joseph Waliya

ELO (un)supervised 2026

This paper theorises Vibe Coding as a novel method of AI-assisted creative practice within electronic literature. Vibe Coding describes an affective mode of communication with AI that enables coding via natural-language prompts, in which the author collaborates with generative AI systems to recycle, remediate, and reconfigure existing digital texts into new poetic forms, including interactive animations. Rather than treating code as a fixed procedural logic, Vibe Coding focuses on rhythm, intuition, and affect as central compositional forces shaping both textual production and computational interaction. Relying on theories of remediation, digital recycling, and posthuman authorship, the paper examines how AI functions …

Spatial Identity In Transition: Revitalizing Surakarta’S Heritage Markets Through Community-Based Placemaking, Eko Nursanty, Sri Mulyani, I Wayan Andhika Widiantara, Arturo Galay Cauba

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Traditional markets are essential socio-cultural infrastructures in heritage cities, shaping everyday interactions, economic life, and collective memory. In Surakarta, four historic markets—Pasar Gede, Pasar Klewer, Pasar Legi, and Pasar Triwindu—sustain the city’s urban identity. However, rapid modernization, commercial restructuring, and shifting consumer behavior have disrupted their spatial and symbolic continuity, raising concerns about the erosion of cultural meaning. Previous studies examined traditional markets mainly from economic or architectural perspectives, rarely exploring how their multidimensional identity evolves under urban transformation. This study investigates how spatial, social, symbolic, and environmental dimensions collectively shape market-based authenticity and the urban identity of Surakarta. A …

Ni2-Imido Bispincer Platforms: Cooperative Reactivity Enabled Through Substrate Addition Across A Ni2n Unit, David De Los Santos, Kritika Gour, Manar M. Shoshani Jul 2026

Ni2-Imido Bispincer Platforms: Cooperative Reactivity Enabled Through Substrate Addition Across A Ni2n Unit, David De Los Santos, Kritika Gour, Manar M. Shoshani

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications

Transition metal imido complexes are renowned for their capacity to undertake challenging 1,2 additions owing to the high basicity of the imido moiety. Access to transition metal imidos is often limited to the addition of organic azides to metal precursors, hindering the design of molecular constructs incorporating imido units. Bimetallic bispincer complexes, 1 and 2, are presented, which are anchored by a central imido moiety supported by pyridyl imine donors, forming highly planarized Ni2N-aryl cores. Complex 2, which also features a Ni─Ni σ-bond, is able to engage in cooperative substrate cleavage of main group hydrides via a formal 1,2 addition …

Man.A.Machine.Txt, James H. Pardue Jul 2026

Man.A.Machine.Txt, James H. Pardue

ELO (un)supervised 2026

man.A.machine.txt is an audiovisual composition generated in real time through a real-time multimedia system that remediates the words of Julien Offray de La Mettrie’s Man a Machine, a foundational text of eighteenth-century materialist philosophy. The system produces cut-up poetry and a particle cloud, transforming the original text into a shifting field of language and data. In Man a Machine, La Mettrie argues that body and soul are inseparable, proposing sleep as the moment in which their unity becomes undeniable. By remediating this text, I seek to reactivate its materialist concerns within our present technological condition—one increasingly defined by …

Archival Storytelling: Remembering Our Digital History, Dene Grigar Jul 2026

Archival Storytelling: Remembering Our Digital History, Dene Grigar

ELO (un)supervised 2026

In When We Are No More: How Digital Memory Is Reshaping Our Future, Abby Smith Rumsey argues that memory is required for survival and impacts not only the survival of a species but of that species’ culture. Needed in this “Age of Matter,” as she calls it, are documentation practices that address the way in which physical and digital memory systems can be combined and harnessed to preserve human experience (13).

This paper addresses Rumsey’s challenge. Using the physical and digital archives held in The NEXT’s collections, it introduces archival storytelling as a method for documenting and, thus, remembering …
