Quantification Of Mast Cells In Reactive Oral Lesions – A Clue To The Morphologic Diversity, Saurabh Shekar, Punnya V. Angadi

Indian Journal of Health Sciences and Biomedical Research KLEU

OBJECTIVE:

Inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia (IFH), pyogenic granuloma (PG), peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF), and peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) are common oral soft-tissue reactive lesions that correspond to excessive connective tissue proliferation as a reaction to trauma or irritational factors local to the oral cavity. These lesions have specific differences in their histopathologic appearances and behavior in spite of having common etiologic factors. Mast cells (MCs) are immune-regulatory cells that have an important role to play in oral inflammation and have also been associated with tissue remodeling and fibrosis in various disorders.

METHODOLOGY:

MCs were stained with toluidine blue in cases …

Maternal Mental Health And Its Influence On Infant Growth And Development A Systematic Review Of Observational Studies In South And East Asia, Shubhashree Venkatesh, J. Vindhya, Anita Nath

Indian Journal of Health Sciences and Biomedical Research KLEU

Maternal mental stress during pregnancy is an important public health concern. There is strong evidence from the Western world to support the presence of a significant association between maternal stress in pregnancy and adverse outcomes in the offspring. There are fewer studies from the South and East regions of Asia. The search was conducted according to the PRISMA criteria. Databases which included NCBI PubMed, Scopus, and Embase were used to search for relevant studies according to the eligibility criteria. Most of the studies have shown a significant relation between stress, depression, and anxiety during various stages of pregnancy with delayed …

INTRODUCTION:

One of the major complications of vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) surgery is recurrent fistula formation. A repeat repair is undertaken after resolution of the inflammatory response to the initial procedure. We report our experience with recurrent VVF managed at our center.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

We retrospectively reviewed the inpatient/outpatient case records of all women who underwent repair of recurrent VVF at our center. The age of the patient at initial presentation of VVF, cause of VVF, and site, size, position, and type of repair were noted.

RESULTS:

During the study period from January 2000 to December 2016, a total of …

CONTEXT:

Mortality due to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) has increased worldwide and, according to the World Health Organization report in 2012, 68% of mortality was due to NCDs. In India, deaths due to NCDs in 2008 were 5.3 million. A rapid health transition is being experienced in India with a rising burden of NCDs. The first point of contact of patients with health services is primary health-care (PHC) facilities, which are the most appropriate places for patient screening and early detection. The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) was launched in 2010 in …

Do Noise Stress Impact To Addiction?, Sundareswaran Lognathan, Arbind Kumar Choudhary, Kuppusamy Mahesh Kumar

Indian Journal of Health Sciences and Biomedical Research KLEU

Numerous studies have illustrated the impact of stress on addiction, its development, relapse vulnerability, and the dopamine mechanism. However, various studies on noise exposures as a stressor had been done, which could alter the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis. Noise exposure harmful effect and changes in the individual's health was at least consideration and were less noticed. This review elucidates the facts and consequences of noise exposure toward mesolimbic dopamine circuitry perceptible in addiction. Further, this review generates greater attention and awareness among people toward noise exposure influence on addiction and its relation with dopamine. The noise stress may act as a …

Indian Journal of Health Sciences and Biomedical Research KLEU

OBJECTIVES:

The aim of this study was to sonographically measure and compare the pronator quadratus muscle thickness (PQMT) in apparently healthy volunteers between two occupational groups and to assess the influence of hand dominance on the PQMT.

METHODS:

A total of 180 apparently healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. The volunteers were grouped into repetitive (90) and nonrepetitive (90) workgroups. They were scanned with a B-mode ultrasound machine and linear transducer.

RESULTS:

The mean PQMT was significantly higher (

P

< 0.05) in the repetitive workgroup than in nonrepetitive workgroups. Similarly, a significant difference in mean PQMT was observed between dominant and nondominant hands in the repetitive workgroups (

P

< 0.05).

CONCLUSION:

The mean PQMT among repetitive workgroup is significantly higher when compared with nonrepetitive workgroups in the study …

Indian Journal of Health Sciences and Biomedical Research KLEU

Fabricated or factitiously induced illness (FII) is a form of child abuse in which a caregiver imposes an illness on a child for some attention or gains. These gains could be financial or psychological. It is also known as Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. In our clinical setting, the patient load is usually high and documentation is not adequate. Most cases could go unnoticed or undiagnosed due to work pressure. The case highlights a neonate with multiple admissions due to induced, imposed, and exaggerated illnesses by a mother, to get financial and psychological attention from the husband. She was found to …

BACKGROUND:

The exact identification of the internal opening in the surgical treatment of anorectal fistulae is of basic importance for effective management, and the same concept was existed long back which was described by Acharya Sushruta in the context of Bhagandar (Arvachina and Parachina). In the current practice, the rule of Goodsall enables identification of the internal opening whether anterior or posterior with relation to its external opening.

OBJECTIVES:

The objective of this study is to substantiate the accuracy of Goodsall's rule and to establish rationality of the rule with anatomical consideration

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Indian Journal of Health Sciences and Biomedical Research KLEU

Acquired epileptic aphasia, otherwise known as Landau–Kleffner syndrome, is a childhood epilepsy syndrome, characterized by acquired aphasia, seizures, behavioral abnormalities, and abnormal electroencephalography (EEG), in various combinations. Sometimes, some intracranial pathologies, such as brain tumor, head injury, demyelination, and neurocysticercosis, have been found in association. Here, we report a case of a 5-year-old male child presenting with gradual loss of speech, behavioral abnormalities, such as hyperactivity, inattentiveness, and abnormal EEG findings, but without the classical seizures seen with this syndrome.

Osteoporosis Current State And Need For Screening With The Help Of Oral Health Physicians, Y. Udaya Sindhu, Abhishek Singh Nayyar, K. Siddhartha, B. Kartheeki, D. Bhargavi

Indian Journal of Health Sciences and Biomedical Research KLEU

Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD) and deterioration of bone structure resulting in an increased susceptibility to fractures of the hip, spine and wrist. Osteoporosis contributes to a great deal of morbidity and mortality and is a large burden to the health service. In the last four decades, numerous research teams have reported oral radiographic findings associated with osteoporosis. Digital orthopantomographs (OPGs), taken for routine dental evaluations, have a significant role in screening for initial osteoporotic changes. A number of mandibular cortical indices (MCIs) have, also, been developed to allow quantification of mandibular bone mass and identification …
