Towards Accountability: A Primer On The Space Debris Problem And An Overview Of The Legal Issues Surrounding It, William Schonberg

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Since 1957, the near-Earth population of trackable space objects has grown in number to over 36,000. Of these 36,000+ trackable objects now in low Earth orbit, just a few thousand are working spacecraft. The rest are Earth-orbiting objects which are no longer operational and are considered to be space junk. Because this junk can no longer receive maneuvering commands from its Earth-based owners, the survivability of other spacecraft traveling through or operating in Earth orbit can be jeopardized by the impacts of any number of pieces of this space junk, whose origins can usually be traced back to defunct satellites. …

Politicization Of Antitrust: Part Ii - Politics And Communication By Antitrust Enforcers, Stephen Calkins Jul 2025

Politicization Of Antitrust: Part Ii - Politics And Communication By Antitrust Enforcers, Stephen Calkins

Law Faculty Research Publications

Early communications from the new Trump antitrust agencies seem unusually partisan. One can find multiple references to Make America Great Again and ushering in America’s Golden Age. Veteran observers’ instinct is that this is not business as usual. This essay checks that intuition against some facts. In particular, it examines press releases introducing officials and/ or referring to the White House, and the first ten speeches or other publications (as collected on agency websites) for current FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Assistant Attorney General Abigail Slater, and a good number of their predecessors. The conclusion: yes, things are different. The typical …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Introduction: Cervical cancer is the greatest cause of cancer-related death among women in Sub-Saharan Africa, with particularly high incidence and mortality rates in rural regions. In Kenya, Women with HIV/AIDS (WLHA) are at a greater risk of developing cervical cancer though screening rate remains low. Information, education and communication (IEC) materials play a crucial role in raising awareness, promoting screening, and supporting early detection and treatment; however, little is known about the accessibility, content, and perceived effectiveness of these materials from the perspective of WLHA.

Methods: The objective of this study was to determine the common sources, perceived communication efficacy …

Hyflex To Online: A Cautionary Tale, Joseph K. Fitzgerald Jul 2025

Hyflex To Online: A Cautionary Tale, Joseph K. Fitzgerald

Case studies: Digital Education

This module was delivered to two undergraduate part-time cohorts. One of the cohorts had a significant requirement for flexibility, as many students could be called into work with little notice. Historically, this group had engaged with online-only classes. However, with the installation of Hyflex technology, it was considered that some limited face-to-face (F2F) engagement could be reintroduced to enrich the learning experience. The intention was that Hyflex could offer the best of both worlds: the flexibility of online access and the interpersonal benefits of F2F learning. The ambition was to support flexibility while reintroducing classroom presence where feasible.

The Development Of Advanced Statistical Methods For Complex Big Data, Kaiwen Wang Jul 2025

The Development Of Advanced Statistical Methods For Complex Big Data, Kaiwen Wang

Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three chapters: 1) Comparative Analysis of Dimension Reduction Methods for Cytometry by Time-of-Flight Data, 2) Integrative Single-Cell Analysis Using Regularized Multitasking Graphical Attention Model with CySCI, and 3) BiGER for Bayesian Rank Aggregation in Genomics with Extended Ranking Schemes.

While experimental and informatic techniques around single cell sequencing (scRNA-seq) are advanced, research around mass cytometry (CyTOF) data analysis has severely lagged behind. This calls for the evaluation and development of computational methods specific for CyTOF data. We first benchmarked dimension reduction methods for CyTOF in Chapter 1. Then, we developed an integrative method for multimodal single-cell …

What Is The Distribution Of National Historical Parks?, Randall K. Johnson

Faculty Works

In an increasingly polarized nation, which no longer can reach any consensus about what is meant by the term “common good,” it might be wise to extend additional protections to national monuments from executive branch interference. But prior to doing so, the U.S. Congress may want to undertake some additional research work. Such research could build on the existing charge of the National Park Service as well as other interested parties. By doing so, Congress gains insight into whether and how this federal legislature should expand protections for national historical parks.

My article explains, at least in part, how Congress …

Data-Driven Methods For Signal Analysis And Nonlinear System Identification, Cristian Felipe López Ruano Jul 2025

Data-Driven Methods For Signal Analysis And Nonlinear System Identification, Cristian Felipe López Ruano

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In recent years, data-driven modeling has gained considerable attention in nonlinear system identification, offering a powerful alternative to traditional physics-based methods. This has been possible by advances in machine learning, sparse regression, and differential equations in a weak form, which allow the accurate capture of complex nonlinear dynamics, even when the measurements are in strong background noise. Moreover, integrating these models with physical knowledge further enhances their reliability and interpretability, making them suitable for a wide range of science and engineering applications.

In this dissertation, we investigate algorithms for data-driven nonlinear system identification to obtain ordinary differential equations that govern …

Distributed Tracking Control Of Multiple High-Order Uncertain Nonlinear Systems With Guaranteed Performance, Eduardo Alvarez, Wenjie Dong Jul 2025

Distributed Tracking Control Of Multiple High-Order Uncertain Nonlinear Systems With Guaranteed Performance, Eduardo Alvarez, Wenjie Dong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the distributed tracking control of multiple uncertain high-order nonlinear systems with prescribed performance requirements. By introducing a performance function and a nonlinear transformation, the prescribed fixed-time performance tracking control problem is reformulated as a distributed tracking control problem for multiple special nonlinear systems. With the aid of the universal approximation theorem for continuous functions and algebraic graph theory, distributed robust adaptive controllers are designed using the backstepping technique. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

A Historic Context For House Moving: Why Moved Houses Are Eligible For The National Register Of Historic Places, Ian Tomashik Jul 2025

A Historic Context For House Moving: Why Moved Houses Are Eligible For The National Register Of Historic Places, Ian Tomashik

Historic Preservation Final Projects

Structural moving, the process of moving complete buildings to new sites, has shaped American landscapes for over two centuries. Thousands of wood-frame houses were moved with surprising frequency between the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. Yet, moved buildings are “ordinarily” ineligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This project explores this exclusion two parts: an analytical essay that argues for their inclusion for nomination and a historic context survey that explains the prevalence of house moving. The essay first explains the National Register’s rationale for questioning the historic significance of moved buildings. It also examines why large-scale house …
