New Light On The Holy City, Douglas L. Winiarski

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

"The Holy City is one of the iconic images of the “New Era” of “Mother’s work" —come to be called—that began in 1837 and lasted into the 1850s. Nearly three feet tall and two feet wide, the large gift drawing depicts a city divided between a rectangular inner precinct and four, half-moon-shaped suburbs. The inspired Shaker visionist who drew The Holy City began by outlining the plan in graphite, using a compass and straight edge, then tracing the lines in black ink. A double line filled with a dark cyan watercolor wash creates the square inner walls of the city; …

Investment In Family Medicine To Improve Health Outcomes In Sub-Saharan Africa, Sunanda C. Ray, Mpundu Makasa, Innocent Besigye, Jacob Shabani, Martha Makwero

Family Medicine, East Africa

Family physicians (FPs), as educators, capacity builders and clinical governance leaders of primary care (PC) teams, work to make them more effective and responsive to the needs of their patients. Various strategies are required to raise the profile of Family Medicine (FM) to ensure stronger representation in health sector planning and policy development for advocacy on behalf of the communities they serve. An illustration is given of the need for FP leaders to become equal partners in the National Surgical, Obstetric and Anaesthesia Planning process to ensure safer surgery at district hospitals and to address unmet surgical needs. Integrating FM …

Varied Legal Parameters Shape Fiduciaries’ Ability To Act On Climate Risk, Cynthia Hanawalt, Andy Fitch Jul 2025

Varied Legal Parameters Shape Fiduciaries’ Ability To Act On Climate Risk, Cynthia Hanawalt, Andy Fitch

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

Commentators who advocate either for or against corporate and asset managers addressing climate risks often refer to “fiduciary duty” as justification for their claims. Yet no field of corporate or asset management actually imposes one standalone fiduciary duty. Nor do any two business-law fields impose the same fiduciary regime. Instead, these fields adopt differing arrays of fiduciary duties to address various types of relationships, comprising a different blend of affirmative obligations and/or prohibitions, assessed with different degrees of strictness by enforcers and courts. As a result, overgeneralizations about fiduciaries’ duty in all business-law contexts tend to further obscure what a …

The rise of generative AI is transforming the realm of business education. As interest and concerns surrounding the use of generative AI in schools grow, research examining the effects of generative AI in education and learning remains sparse. To that end, this study aims to demystify the potential generative AI by evaluating the performance of ChatGPT in addressing Operations Management problems and questions, which are classified according to Bloom’s taxonomy and grouped as quantitative vs. qualitative, deterministic vs. stochastic groups. Our findings reveal that ChatGPT generally performed well but struggled with Bloom’s “applying” and stochastic questions, suggesting its limitations in …

What Before Means: Teaching The English Pluperfect, Max Miller, Joseph C. M. Davis Jul 2025

What Before Means: Teaching The English Pluperfect, Max Miller, Joseph C. M. Davis

Publications and Research

This paper extends existing linguistic analyses of the English simple past tense (e.g., took) and pluperfect tense (e.g., had taken) by thoroughly examining communicative effects. It also proposes a pedagogical application. The analysis is based on authentic contextualized discourse (primarily a single published text). In distinction to the simple past, the pluperfect establishes a communicative link between a past time and an event before that time. In this way, the pluperfect makes conceptional connection (which could be termed "tethering") through temporal priority. The meaning of the pluperfect thus contributes to textual cohesion. The distinction made is communicative, not a matter …

Health Services and Informatics Research

OBJECTIVE: To characterize and demonstrate how to reduce the administrative burden experienced by patients when navigating medication affordability resources in the United States.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Informed by administrative burden theory, we conducted an environmental scan of medication affordability resources for atrial fibrillation, and four common comorbidities (diabetes, heart failure, hypertension, and lipid disorder). We systematically searched for resources (eg, patient assistance programs, savings cards and nonprofit support) and extracted information about types, eligibility criteria, needed documentation, and application processes.

RESULTS: We identified 66 resources across 12 categories across the five conditions. The resources' varied eligibility criteria, application processes, and …

Dynamic Defenses To Systematically Secure Exposed Attack Surfaces In Wireless Systems, Naureen Hoque Jul 2025

Dynamic Defenses To Systematically Secure Exposed Attack Surfaces In Wireless Systems, Naureen Hoque

Theses

While modern wireless systems rely on strong encryption, this alone does not secure the entire attack surface, including exposed signal attributes, pre-authentication exchanges, and protocol metadata. This dissertation challenges the assumption that existing cryptographic protections are sufficient to protect these vulnerabilities. Signal attributes, including phase and amplitude variations due to modulation, are physical-layer characteristics of encrypted data communication that remain observable and exploitable for attacks like traffic analysis. The pre-authentication phase—during which session keys are negotiated and installed—is vulnerable to spoofing and denial-of-service attacks. Protocol metadata, such as operating channel, sender’s address and location, and timestamps, is unencrypted and can …

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose: Mounting research supports the use of motor-based intervention (e.g., Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing [DTTC]) for children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), but large randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are needed to better understand optimal treatment conditions. Partnering with community clinicians may help support recruitment and data collection for large groups of participants with CAS. However, to achieve this, rigorous training is needed to ensure high-fidelity treatment and adherence to research protocols. This work presents a multiphase process for training community clinicians to implement high-fidelity DTTC. We then examined whether clinician factors predicted their performance on assessment tasks used …

Developing A Typology Of Korean Women Leaders' Resistance To Their Token Status In The Workplace, Yonjoo Cho, Jiwon Park, Sumi Lee, Sokyum Yoon Jul 2025

Developing A Typology Of Korean Women Leaders' Resistance To Their Token Status In The Workplace, Yonjoo Cho, Jiwon Park, Sumi Lee, Sokyum Yoon

Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

Despite remarkable economic development in South Korea (Korea), there are only a few women leaders, and they face challenges in the gendered workplace where organizational constraints and traditional values coexist. In a reanalysis of narratives of Korean women leaders (KWLs), using an ideal-type analysis as a novel qualitative research method, we identified five types of KWLs' resistance to their token status in the workplace: (1) Opportunity-Driven, (2) Pathfinding, (3) Self-Reflective, (4) Persevering, and (5) Changing the Way to Resist. The five types broaden the meaning of KWLs' resistance and highlight different ways they resist their token status in the workplace. …

Facing Faculty Fears About Ai, John Lande Jul 2025

Facing Faculty Fears About Ai, John Lande

Faculty Publications

This essay addresses a widespread but rarely voiced concern among faculty: the fear of appearing uninformed, unprepared, or even outmatched by students when incorporating AI into their teaching. While worries about cheating, hallucinations, de-skilling, and loss of control are legitimate, this essay encourages faculty to shift from fear to curiosity. It argues that acknowledging uncertainty can strengthen faculty–student relationships and model the curiosity and humility we hope to cultivate in students.

It outlines two general strategies for faculty: restricting AI use when students need to build foundational skills, and requiring it when students are ready to develop professional judgment using …

Un(Der)Explored Links Between Plant Diversity And Particulate And Mineral-Associated Organic Matter In Soil, Šárka Angst, Gerrit Angst, Kevin E. Mueller, Markus Lange, Nico Eisenhauer Jul 2025

Un(Der)Explored Links Between Plant Diversity And Particulate And Mineral-Associated Organic Matter In Soil, Šárka Angst, Gerrit Angst, Kevin E. Mueller, Markus Lange, Nico Eisenhauer

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Plant diversity can alter soil carbon stocks, but the effects are difficult to predict due to the multitude of mechanisms involved. We propose that these mechanisms and their outcomes can be better understood by testing how plant diversity affects particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) depending on whether MAOM storage is "saturated" and the total soil organic matter pool is limited by plant inputs. Such context-dependency of plant-diversity effects on POM, MAOM, and total soil organic matter helps explain inconsistencies in plant-diversity-soil-carbon relationships across studies. Further illumination of this context-dependency is required to better predict consequences of …

Adverse Childhood Exeriences In Early Childhood, Sierra Myer

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This inquiry-based research project examines how early childhood educators at Okoboji Elementary understand and implement trauma-informed care (TIC). With many students impacted by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), educators are increasingly being asked to meet both academic and emotional needs in the classroom. This study used anonymous surveys and Teaching Strategies GOLD assessment data to explore teacher familiarity with ACEs, confidence in managing trauma-related behaviors, and the supports they feel are still needed. Findings show that while many educators are using trauma-sensitive strategies—such as calm-down corners, emotional check-ins, and visual routines—confidence levels and training backgrounds vary. Some staff have received formal …

Emotionally Responsive Caregiving, Juliet Christine Ratajczak

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This inquiry-based research explores how emotionally responsive caregiving supports co-regulation and the development of self-regulation in toddlers aged 18 to 36 months. Conducted in a federally funded Early Head Start classroom, the study employed qualitative methods including observational field notes, reflecting journaling, and collaborative discussions between educators. Three central themes emerged: 1) Emotional consistency and attunement, 2) secure attachment as a foundation for self-regulation, and 3) collaborative caregiver growth. Findings indicate that predictable, sensitive, and warm caregiver responses during emotionally charged moments such as transitions, separations, and peer conflict foster emotional safety, trust, and resilience in toddlers. Secure attachment relationships …
