Habsburg Ruthenian/Rusyn Identities Part Ii: Where Are The Michigan Ruthenians?, Robert Goodrich Jul 2025

Habsburg Ruthenian/Rusyn Identities Part Ii: Where Are The Michigan Ruthenians?, Robert Goodrich

Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region

Ruthenians overwhelmingly came to Michigan between 1900 and 1914 as citizens of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, where their ethnic (national) status was officially recognized and protected (at least formally). Their distinct identity was built around their Rusyn language, Ruthenian Rite Catholicism, connection to a cultural territorial homeland along the Carpathians (Ruthenia), and an overwhelmingly peasant-based village life generally led by sacerdotal families. However, the lack of a single administrative focus within the Monarchy’s multi-ethnicity meant that Ruthenians always showed a high degree of regional variation. With the collapse of the Monarchy in 1918, the polyvalent centrifugal tendencies rapidly accelerated so that …

Abstract

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition impacting approximately 4.6 million children, with high rates of uncontrolled cases in Missouri. This quality improvement project aimed to explore the use of a digital media system to provide asthma education to children and families receiving care in a rural pediatric pulmonology clinic aged 6 months- 21 years of age; and to assess preferred media format, priority topics, and knowledge gained from exposure to digital educational materials. Utilizing a prospective cohort design, families completed a pre-survey to identify educational preferences and tailored digital asthma education through the use of Patient Education Genius (PEG). …

Implementation Of A Nurse-Driven Process To Decrease Npo Times In A Geriatric Emergency Department, Luke D. Little Jul 2025

Implementation Of A Nurse-Driven Process To Decrease Npo Times In A Geriatric Emergency Department, Luke D. Little

Dissertations

Prolonged nil per os (NPO) status for geriatric patients in the emergency department is a critical safety issue, leading to increased rates of delirium, hypoglycemia, and perioperative complications. A quality improvement project was designed to address this problem through a targeted, nurse-driven intervention. In geriatric patients (age ≥70) in a geriatric emergency department, this project aimed to determine if implementing an electronic health record (EHR)-prompted nursing workflow to obtain a diet order would reduce the length of time patients were kept NPO compared with standard practice. An EHR documentation tool was designed and implemented along with targeted nursing education sessions …

Exploring Exemplary Leadership Practices Of Elementary Principals, Latoya R. Gray Jul 2025

Exploring Exemplary Leadership Practices Of Elementary Principals, Latoya R. Gray

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is insufficient understanding regarding the educational leadership practices that have enabled one elementary school, out of 23, to achieve continuous school improvement in ELA and mathematics in Grades 3–5 over 3 consecutive academic years. Although all schools in the district implemented a uniform curriculum, the study site consistently increased the percentage of students scoring proficient or above in both subjects during 2022, 2023, and 2024, as measured by the state end-of-grade assessment. This qualitative single-case study explored how an elementary principal in a suburban Georgia district achieved continuous improvement through distinctive leadership practices. Grounded in Kouzes and Posner’s framework …

A Chat Room In A City Of Missouri's Public Safety Answering Point, Rochele Wynee' Young Jul 2025

A Chat Room In A City Of Missouri's Public Safety Answering Point, Rochele Wynee' Young

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Despite new and emerging communications technologies to improve access to 911 emergency services for people with speech, hearing, and cognitive disabilities, there continue to be access barriers for those who may require silent communications due to the nature of the emergency. Chat rooms in 911 communications present a promising solution to this challenge. However, the current literature has inadequately examined the use of chat rooms in 911 communications, mainly due to the nascent nature of this technology. This study aimed to fill that gap by providing valuable insights to enhance access to 911 emergency services for individuals who may require …

Agency Problem And Corporate Philanthropy—Evidence From China’S Anticorruption Campaign, Lihong Liang, Nian Liu, Wenjie Ma Jul 2025

Agency Problem And Corporate Philanthropy—Evidence From China’S Anticorruption Campaign, Lihong Liang, Nian Liu, Wenjie Ma

Accounting - All Scholarship

This study explores the effect of China’s anticorruption campaign as a natural experiment for testing the agency-cost view of philanthropy. We find that state-owned enterprises (SOEs), which are more influenced by this campaign, experienced larger declines in philanthropy than non-state-owned enterprises (non-SOEs), especially regarding the percentage of high-agency-cost donations. The effect is more pronounced for firms with higher agency costs, namely firms with higher perks and located in low-legal-protection regions. Further, using manually collected data on firms’ philanthropy disclosure, we find that the campaign improves transparency in corporate philanthropy disclosures. SOEs are more likely to disclose donation information and provide …

Implementation Of A Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Toolkit Postpartum, Emily R. Leone Jul 2025

Implementation Of A Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Toolkit Postpartum, Emily R. Leone

Dissertations

Problem: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually acquired infection in the world (DeCherney et al., 2018). Even a single dose of the HPV vaccine can provide up to 97% protection against HPV 16 and 18, which are the strains that cause 70% of all cervical cancers (Barnabas et al., 2022). Missouri ranks 35th in the country for HPV vaccination (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2020).

Methods: This quality improvement project implemented an HPV toolkit consisting of: 1) staff nurse education in the form of a written presentation 2) patient and provider education in the form of …

"...Anything My Friend Shares, I Would Want To Support Them By Clicking On It": Co-Designing Story-Based Interventions Against Clickbait For Teenagers, Ankit Shrestha, Audrey Flood, Bryson Hackler, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen Jul 2025

"...Anything My Friend Shares, I Would Want To Support Them By Clicking On It": Co-Designing Story-Based Interventions Against Clickbait For Teenagers, Ankit Shrestha, Audrey Flood, Bryson Hackler, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen

Computer Science Student Research

Teenagers' lack of digital sophistication and cyber hygiene makes them vulnerable to social engineering attacks, especially as they start using social media. Clickbait, one of such attacks, is primarily performed through social media to trick users into clicking on malicious links. With teenagers' increasing use of social media, clickbait poses a substantial threat to their online safety. The existing online safety measures for teens mainly focus on parental mediation, which can be perceived as restrictive and privacy-invasive. To this end, researchers recommended empowering teens to deal with online risks. In order to design such interventions for clickbait, we conducted co-design …

The Testimonial Double Bind For Disabled People, Avram Hiller Jul 2025

The Testimonial Double Bind For Disabled People, Avram Hiller

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Disabled people face a testimonial double bind: Either (1) they give entirely positive testimony about their disability, which may not be believed, or (2) they give some negative testimony about their disability, which either (2a) may not be believed, (2b) will risk reinforcing false and harmful stereotypes, or (2c) will risk damaging disability rights. While (1) has been discussed to a significant extent in the literature, (2) has been discussed to a much lesser extent, and a goal of this paper is to explore (2) in more detail. I further argue that this testimonial double bind may cause problems for …

False Starts & Finish Lines: Youth Sports, Coaching, & The Crisis Of The American Dream, John S. Lammert Jr Jul 2025

False Starts & Finish Lines: Youth Sports, Coaching, & The Crisis Of The American Dream, John S. Lammert Jr

Master's Theses

False Starts & Finish Lines: Youth Sports, Coaching, & the Crisis of the American Dream examines how the American youth sports system reflects, reproduces, and at times resists the evolving contradictions of the American Dream. Drawing on a comparative analysis of institutional documents from public high schools, travel clubs, and recreational leagues, this thesis interrogates how youth sports have shifted from inclusive spaces of play and character-building to stratified marketplaces governed by the Athletic Industrial Complex (AIC). It argues that rising costs, performance pressures, and privatized structures have transformed access to sport—and, by extension, to the Dream itself—into a function …

Security Analysis Of Encrypted Mempool, Prabal Das Jul 2025

Security Analysis Of Encrypted Mempool, Prabal Das

Master’s Dissertations

With the rapid growth of Decentralized Finance (DeFi), the challenge of Maximum Extractable Value (MEV) has become increasingly significant-particularly on Ethereum. MEV allows malicious actors to manipulate transaction order within blocks, enabling exploitative strategies such as frontrunning and sandwich attacks. In response, recent research has proposed encrypted mempools, which conceal trans- action content until after ordering is finalized, thereby reducing the exploitable surface for MEV. This thesis investigates encrypted mempool, specifically the Shutter protocol, a threshold encryption-based approach designed to mitigate MEV by hiding transac- tion contents during the mempool phase. We analyze its core architecture, under- lying cryptographic mechanisms, …

For Every Right A Remedy: Providing A Private Right Of Action Under The Church Amendments, Brad Grisenti Jul 2025

For Every Right A Remedy: Providing A Private Right Of Action Under The Church Amendments, Brad Grisenti

BYU Law Review

In 1973, Congress responded to the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision by passing legislation known as the “Church Amendments.” The Church Amendments were designed to protect healthcare workers from being compelled by their employers to perform or participate in abortion or sterilization procedures that conflict with their moral and religious beliefs. However, the Church Amendments suffer from an enforcement problem, largely due to Congress’s failure to explicitly provide a private right of action in the text of the statute. And thus far, courts have consistently refrained from interpreting it as containing an implied private right of action. Without …

Redefining Child Pornography In An Age Of Technological Advancement: The Concept Of Avoidable Harm, Debra D. Burke, Christopher N. Doval

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

In 2020, Netflix released on its streaming service the movie Cuties, a coming-of-age story about an 11-year-old Senegalese immigrant who joined a dance group. The film is a commentary against the hyper-sexualization of children and the pressure young girls face from social media and society and received a director’s award at the Sundance Film Festival. Its release, however, kicked off a culture war, prompting a movement to cancel Netflix subscriptions in response to the film’s sexually provocative imagery of young girls. The movie’s award-winning director defended the film’s message, explaining that the film was her own story, struggling as a …

Stolen Humanity On Display: Lacking Legislation For Human Remains In U.S. Museums, Sarah M. Fassio Jul 2025

Stolen Humanity On Display: Lacking Legislation For Human Remains In U.S. Museums, Sarah M. Fassio

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

In museums across the United States, displays of human remains are not rarities. Yet few attendees stop to consider the provenance behind those once-living parts of our ancestors. To do so, one would have to contend with an unpleasant history rife with scientific racism and graverobbing for the personal collections of society’s upper crust. Considering the origins of such displays reveals that the labels and names attached to human remains in museums often serve more to alienate them from their humanity than they do to connect or contextualize.

Legal regulations pertaining to displayed human remains are piecemeal. There are federal …

Precise Operations, Imprecise Laws: How Nebulous Laws Wreak Havoc In Outer Space, Matthew H. Ormsbee, Harine Raaj

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

As space operations advance with unprecedented precision, the laws governing these activities remain outdated, vague, and incapable of addressing contemporary challenges. The Outer Space Treaty (OST) and the Liability Convention, drafted in the Cold War era, fail to adequately define fundamental terms such as damage, fault, and compensation. This lack of legal precision creates significant liability gaps, particularly as space debris, mega-constellations, and private-sector actors reshape the space landscape. This article explores how these ambiguities hinder legal predictability and fair compensation for victims of space-related harm. By analyzing real-world space incidents, including the Cosmos 954 reentry, the Iridium-Cosmos collision, and …

Tailoring The Law: Protecting Fashion In The Future, Imaad Huda

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

This article identifies how the current legal system in the United States harms fashion designers and the art they produce. It explains how fashion as an industry lacks a system of law that best fits the issues posed by design theft due to fast fashion. Fast fashion companies, through modern technology, are able to reproduce stolen designs with haste. Currently, there are a few notable cases that have spawned from design theft, but their verdicts may be limited in their ability to change policy or raise significant legal issues. This article analyzes both current federal enforcement mechanisms and design practices …

China Maritime Report #48: Great Inspectations: Prc Maritime Law Enforcement Operations In The Taiwan Strait, Julia Famularo Jul 2025

China Maritime Report #48: Great Inspectations: Prc Maritime Law Enforcement Operations In The Taiwan Strait, Julia Famularo

CMSI China Maritime Reports

Main Findings

  • People’s Republic of China (PRC) law enforcement operations function as forms of cognitive and legal warfare. They represent a clear effort to undermine international maritime law as well as Taiwan’s sovereignty.
  • The PRC asserts that the Taiwan Strait comprises multiple “zones,” to include “internal waters, territorial sea, [the] contiguous zone, and the Exclusive Economic Zone.” While China does not explicitly claim that the waters of the Taiwan Strait wholly constitute PRC sovereign territory, it clearly implies that it has the self-defined right to exercise distinct forms of control over different zones of the Strait.
  • While stressing that China …

Cardiac disease remains a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, particularly in developed countries where improved survival has increased the number of pregnant patients with congenital heart disease. The physiological changes of pregnancy, such as increased blood volume, cardiac output, and hypercoagulability, can exacerbate preexisting cardiac conditions, posing significant anesthetic challenges during cesarean delivery. This review outlines anesthetic strategies for parturients with structural or functional cardiac disease, emphasizing individualized, multidisciplinary care. We examine general and regional anesthesia approaches, intraoperative monitoring, and hemodynamic goals, including fluid balance, venous return optimization, and myocardial oxygen demand reduction. Preoperative risk stratification and coordination …
