Beyond The Surface: How Depth Alters Face Perception, Farid Pazhoohi, Jerry Wang, Keina Aoki, Alan Kingstone Jul 2025

Beyond The Surface: How Depth Alters Face Perception, Farid Pazhoohi, Jerry Wang, Keina Aoki, Alan Kingstone

School of Psychology

Research in face perception has predominantly utilized two-dimensional images, which does not fully capture the complexities of human perception as it operates in real-world settings. Previous studies have demonstrated that 3D objects elicit different neural and behavioral responses compared to their 2D counterparts, suggesting a more profound engagement with and processing of real-world objects and environments. Grounded in the understanding that human visual perception has evolved in three-dimensional environments, this research addressed a notable gap in the literature on facial perception. This study investigates the impact of presentation modality (2D vs. 3D) on the perception of facial attractiveness, dominance, and …

The Local Neighborhood Interactions Shaping Tree Communities Through Ecological Disturbance And Environmental Change, Cole Doolittle Jul 2025

The Local Neighborhood Interactions Shaping Tree Communities Through Ecological Disturbance And Environmental Change, Cole Doolittle

Dissertations (1934 -)

My dissertation consists of four chapters focused on understanding the factors maintaining local species diversity, addressing a central goal of ecology increasingly critical for preserving ecosystem services and human well-being in the face of climate change. Specifically, I investigate how local neighborhoods – that is, the spatial arrangement, density, and identity of nearby competitors – contribute to patterns of growth and survival along gradients of ecological disturbance and environmental change using forest tree communities as a study system. In my first chapter, I develop a conceptual framework that synthesizes why we may expect local neighborhood interactions to weaken under ecological …

Allied Health Student's Attitudes And Beliefs On Health Literacy Issues Focused On The Non-Native English-Speaking Community, Amy I. Thompson Jul 2025

Allied Health Student's Attitudes And Beliefs On Health Literacy Issues Focused On The Non-Native English-Speaking Community, Amy I. Thompson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Today's allied health students and their professors are faced with many challenges, including the low level of health literacy among the United States population. Healthy People 2020 defined health literacy as “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions” (Healthy People 2030). This definition was expanded in Healthy People 2030, to include concepts related to personal and organizational health literacy. Social determinates, such as a language barrier, further complicates an already complex situation with health literacy levels. This focus group, interview-based qualitative …

Exploring Physician Associates’ Perceptions Of Motivational Interviewing: A Phenomenological Study, Thaddeus Riley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Longer lifespans across the population are contributing to a rise in chronic illnesses that require ongoing treatment. This increase has furthered the need for evidence-based clinical tools to effectively treat long-term diseases. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based method used by physicians and other healthcare practitioners, including physician associates (PAs), to help patients facilitate health behavior changes. PAs are licensed, highly trained healthcare professionals who practice medicine across all specialties and settings. PAs focus on patient-centered, team-based care and play a key role in expanding access to healthcare and improving overall health outcomes (AAPA, 2023b). While MI’s efficacy has been …

Using Confidence Scores To Improve Eyes-Free Detection Of Speech Recognition Errors, Sadia Nowrin, Keith Vertanen Jul 2025

Using Confidence Scores To Improve Eyes-Free Detection Of Speech Recognition Errors, Sadia Nowrin, Keith Vertanen

Michigan Tech Publications

Conversational systems rely heavily on speech recognition to interpret and respond to user commands and queries. Despite progress on speech recognition accuracy, errors may still sometimes occur and can significantly affect the end-user utility of such systems. While visual feedback can help detect errors, it may not always be practical, especially for people who are blind or low-vision. In this study, we investigate ways to improve error detection by manipulating the audio output of the transcribed text based on the recognizer's confidence level in its result. Our findings show that selectively slowing down the audio when the recognizer exhibited uncertainty …

Perceptions Of Blind Adults On Non-Visual Mobile Text Entry, Dylan Gaines, Keith Vertanen

Michigan Tech Publications

Text input on mobile devices without physical keys can be challenging for people who are blind or low-vision. We interview 12 blind adults about their experiences with current mobile text input to provide insights into what sorts of interface improvements may be the most beneficial. We identify three primary themes that were experiences or opinions shared by participants: the poor accuracy of dictation, difficulty entering text in noisy environments, and difficulty correcting errors in entered text. We also discuss an experimental non-visual text input method with each participant to solicit opinions on the method and probe their willingness to learn …

Cognitive Fatigue Assessment For Human-Robot Collaboration: Review & Open Challenges, Manizheh Zand, Sally Wood, Fatemeh Davoudi Kakhki, Maria Kyrarini

General Engineering

As Human Robot Collaboration (HRC) technologies continue to advance, robots are increasingly being deployed to assist in various settings, including manufacturing, healthcare, and home environments. A critical aspect of designing safe and adaptable HRC systems is the ability to assess and monitor an individual’s Cognitive Fatigue (CF) during interactions with robots. This is especially important in ensuring safe and effective environments, as fluctuations in CF can affect both performance and safety. Although prior research has explored cognitive workload and fatigue, a significant gap exists in understanding how to effectively measure and manage CF in real-time during HRC. This paper reviews …

Tailoring Hiv/Aids Communication To The Cultural Contexts Of The Borana Pastoral Community In Ethiopia, Dano Olana, Sabihah Moola Jul 2025

Tailoring Hiv/Aids Communication To The Cultural Contexts Of The Borana Pastoral Community In Ethiopia, Dano Olana, Sabihah Moola

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

The HIV/AIDS health communication approach in sub-Saharan Africa has often overlooked sociocultural specificities. The current approach follows a generalist notion that does not consider the specific contextual domains accordingly. Similarly, the cultural appropriateness of HIV/AIDS health communication among the Borana pastoral community in Ethiopia is not clear. In this study, we aimed to explore whether HIV/AIDS communication among the Borana pastoral community was tailored to the cultural contexts of the community. A qualitative case study was used to unpack the cultural communication contexts for HIV/AIDS. We collected data using three methods, namely, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis …

All Decisions

In this nonpayment case, the court awarded the tenants a substantial rent abatement of over $76, 000 for the landlord's breach of the warranty of habitability. The tenants successfully proved the existence of numerous conditions, including leaks, mold, and defective surfaces, using HPD violations and trial testimony. While the landlord was granted a final money judgment for the remaining arrears, the court significantly reduced the amount owed. The decision underscores the importance of a fact-based defense in abatement cases to meet the preponderance of the evidence standard.

The First Documented Case Of Melanism In Sciurus Anomalus, Recorded In Türkiye, Burak Akdağ, Balkan Mega

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study reports the first documented case of melanism in the Caucasian squirrel (Sciurus anomalus) from Türkiye. While melanism has been documented in 12 other species within the Sciurus genus, it has not previously been recorded in S. anomalus. The observation was made during a herpetological field survey in Erzincan Province, Türkiye, where a melanistic specimen was photographed in a mixed habitat comprising natural vegetation and cultivated land. In mammals, melanism is widely regarded as an adaptive trait, potentially conferring advantages such as improved thermoregulation in colder climates and enhanced crypsis in shaded forest environments. This novel observation not only …

Money And Social Exclusion In Networks, Maria Bigoni, Gabriele Camera, Edoardo Gallo Jul 2025

Money And Social Exclusion In Networks, Maria Bigoni, Gabriele Camera, Edoardo Gallo

ESI Working Papers

Globalization offers unparalleled opportunities to expand welfare through cooperation across large networks of unrelated individuals. Social exclusion – permanent or temporary – and monetary exchange are institutions that in theory can incentivize cooperation. In an experiment, we evaluate their relative performance and interaction in anonymous networks of different sizes. Permanent social exclusion (ostracism) reduces long-run economic potential by leading to sparse networks. Monetary exchange and temporary social exclusion perform similarly well in small networks. In large networks, however, monetary exchange is the only institution that promotes full cooperation by crowding out ostracism and keeping the network complete. An insight is …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The long-eared owl (Asio otus) is a widespread nocturnal raptor found across the Holarctic, inhabiting a variety of wooded habitats with adjacent open areas. While the species is not globally threatened, its population is declining, which is primarily attributed to threats such as habitat degradation, pesticide use, hunting, and disturbance. Although winter breeding has been documented in several European countries, no such records have been reported from Türkiye up to date. In this study, we compiled 11 records of winter breeding long-eared owls from northwest and central Türkiye, based on our field observations and data from rehabilitation centers. The estimated …

Wildfires are a natural part of the western U.S. landscape and provide numerous benefits, including enhanced nutrient cycling and habitat rejuvenation. Utah’s fish populations evolved with wildfire as a common disturbance. However, the increasing size and severity of wildfires, combined with Utah’s heavily engineered and fragmented stream networks, pose a contemporary risk to fish populations. This fact sheet reviews wildfire impacts on erosion and Utah's watersheds and fisheries. It outlines measures we can take to prevent post-wildfire fish die-offs.

Racial disparities in the clinical outcomes of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) have been well-documented, but the underlying biological mechanisms remain poorly understood. To investigate these disparities, we employed a multi-omic approach integrating imaging mass cytometry and spatial transcriptomics to characterize the tumor microenvironment (TME) in self-identified Black American (BA) and White American (WA) TNBC patients. Our analysis revealed that the TME in BA patients is marked by a network of endothelial cells, macrophages, and mesenchymal-like cells, which correlates with reduced patient survival. In contrast, the WA TNBC microenvironment is enriched in T-cells and neutrophils, indicative of T-cell exhaustion and suppressed …

In this perspective, we highlight the relevance of the FA-Hippo signaling pathway and its regulation of the Yes-associated protein (YAP) and the transcriptional coactivator with a PDZ-binding domain (TAZ) as main players in the process of implants integration. The modulation and responses of YAP/TAZ triggered by substrate and ECM stiffness are of particular interest in the construction of materials used for medical implants. YAP/TAZ nuclear localization and activity respond to the substrate stiffness by several mechanisms that involve the canonical and non-canonical Hippo signaling and independently of the Hippo cascade. YAP/TAZ regulate the expression of genes involved in several mechanisms …

Developing A Stochastic Rupture Model Catalog For Earthquakes With Magnitudes Of Seven Or Greater Along The Alaskan Subduction Zone, Alexandru Mihai Lapadat

Geosciences

Alaska represents one of the most seismically active regions in the Ring of Fire and world impacted by large-magnitude (Mw > 6.5) earthquake events, posing significant risks to local communities and infrastructure, but also distant populations due to the associated tsunami hazard. However, limited seismo-geodetic datasets hinder the understanding of the slip kinematics of megathrust earthquakes in the Alaskan subduction zone, complicating the estimation of future earthquake probabilities, surface displacements, and the design of a GNSS-aided Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system. This research contributes an extensive synthetic rupture model catalog for the Alaskan subduction zone, generated using the stochastic methodology of …
