Tooth Brushing Technique Detection With Deep Learning On The Edge, Anthony Teal, Dheryta Jaisinghani

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

Non-communicable gum disease affects about 42%[4] of adults aged 30 years and older. Developing a robust model to detect brushing techniques on a smartwatch can help reinforce good brushing habits and prevent gum disease.

The likelihood of someone owning a smart watch compared to a smart toothbrush is staggering. There were around 66,051[3] smart toothbrushes sold in 2022, with smartwatches shipping about 150,000,000[2] units. It is important to have an alternative on a smartwatch, because it will reach far more users.

Data privacy has become a large issue worldwide. With a pre-trained model that is systematically fine-tuned …

Bridging The Gap: Fostering Collaboration And Professional Development With University And School Librarian Partnerships, Melissa Dennis, Melody Dale

Mississippi Libraries

In 1999, the Mississippi State University Libraries established the MegaResource School Librarian Workshop, a technology-focused workshop that provided K-12 librarians an opportunity to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Over the past 25 years, the workshop has evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of school librarians, however, the popularity of the workshop and limited spacing meant there was often a waiting list, creating an opportunity for other institutions to help fill this need. In 2022, academic librarians and deans from Mississippi universities met to discuss ways that the University of Mississippi Libraries and others could create more outreach opportunities, specifically for …

Generating Personalized Multimedia Content By Prompting Models With Location And Context Specific Inputs, Shiblee Hasan, Joseph Johnson Jr

Defensive Publications Series

Currently, generating content tied to specific locations via genAI models can often result in hallucinations of non-existent places or creation of generic content that is devoid of the target specifics. The difficulties in generating content for specific locations result from the genAI models being trained on massive datasets containing images from many locations without sufficient focus on a single location. This disclosure describes techniques to enhance the creation of location-specific personalized 2D or 3D immersive or non-immersive multimedia experiences (e.g., 2D or 3D panoramic video with or without sound) via multimodal genAI models. Base genAI models are boosted with multimedia …

Reducing Shot Cuts In Diffusion-Generated Video, Mitchell Mcintire, David Yao, Orly Liba Aug 2025

Reducing Shot Cuts In Diffusion-Generated Video, Mitchell Mcintire, David Yao, Orly Liba

Defensive Publications Series

This publication describes techniques for reducing shot cuts in videos generated by diffusion models, particularly in image-to-video applications. Shot cuts are abrupt transitions between distinct scenes of video. Shot cuts may be unexpected and may be irrelevant to provided input. To reduce shot cuts, a diffusion model may begin a diffusion process from a static video, where the frames of the static video may be noised instances of an input image. The diffusion model may also insert the input image as a first frame of the generated video, anchoring the output to the input. By ‘anchoring’ the output video and …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Trauma experience is a pervasive problem for Indiana students that may hinder their functioning within the educational environment. Difficulty in addressing the impact of trauma for students often makes educators feel ineffective and is a contributing factor in educators leaving the profession. Trauma-informed care is an evidence-based framework of practice that may be implemented to mitigate the impacts of trauma for students. Indiana legislation now mandates pre-service educators receive education in trauma-informed care, but there is limited research on the current state of in-service educator trauma-informed care knowledge and skills, as well as the impact on their self-efficacy as educators. …

Linking Ruthenium(Ii) Polypyridyl Complexes Into Metal-Organic Frameworks Using Iron(Ii) And Zinc(Ii), Taofeek Mayowa Ogungbade

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Renewable energy has attracted significant interest in recent years as society seeks to minimize its dependence on fossil fuels. Among the various strategies proposed to achieve this goal, one promising approach is the conversion of carbon dioxide into organic fuels using photocatalysts. Unlike traditional semiconductor photocatalysts, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer advantages such as absorption of visible light, tunable structures, and uniform pore sizes, which enhance their efficiency in the photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide.

In this thesis, we report the synthesis, structure, and properties of two novel heteronuclear MOFs that incorporate ruthenium(II) complexes and 3d-block transition metals using 2,2’-bipyridine-5,5’-dicarboxylic acid …

Uncle Sam Plays Matchmaker: Intimate Encounters, War Brides, And Marital Policy In The Vietnam War Era, Daniel P. Ward

Dissertations

During the Vietnam War era, thousands of American GIs married Southeast Asian women who immigrated to the United States together. While considerable scholarly attention has focused on the political and social dimensions of the Vietnam era sex work industry, the regulation of marriage and immigration policies for Vietnamese American couples provide new perspectives to explore. Although intimate encounters with local women also pervaded other twentieth century conflicts, the Vietnam War saw the American military implement a new system to screen and regulate war bride marriages. In doing so, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) constructed the first interservice set of marriage …

In contrast to their for-profit counterparts, nonprofit turnover rates remain on the rise. While literature indicates that one of the primary drivers of nonprofit turnover is burnout, more granular research proposes that nonprofit social service employees encounter a distinct form of burnout generated by the exposure to secondary traumatic distress known as compassion fatigue. This study investigated the antecedents of this phenomenon by examining trait mindfulness as a moderator of work-life balance and compassion fatigue among nonprofit social service providers. To sustain a workforce that provides …

One of the most interesting aspects of adolescents’ use of social media is the dynamic drama that occurs between followers of social media influencers in the wake of controversial actions performed by social media influencers themselves. A content analysis of followers’ comments about influencers’ and social media personalities’ scandalous romantic entanglements indicated that close to 90 percent of commenters were female and, in keeping with followers’ loyalty to their favored influencer, the highest proportion of comments were negative to the influencer’s adversary in the romantic dispute. A detailed analysis of the moralistic aspects of followers’ comments offered additional insights.

Beyond Keeping The Lights On: Covid-19’S Impact On Lower Mississippi River Valley Museums And Public History Sites, Liz Skilton, Ian Beamish

Department of History

This article reviews the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on public history sites and museums along the Lower Mississippi River Valley between 2020 and 2024. Constructed from interviews with sixty-seven sites across a four-year period, it uses a regional approach to examine how pandemic closures, reopening processes, and adaptations impacted public history sites and museums in the short-, medium-, and long-term, arguing that the pandemic created lasting changes through adaptation rather than large-scale closure of public history institutions. It concludes with an assessment of what can be learned from the pandemic period’s effect on public history.

More Than A Mirror: Investigating Social Media’S Role In Shaping Social Comparisons And Identity Around Perceptions Of Beauty, Janella Eshiet

Communication (PhD) Dissertations

The rapid expansion of social media has transformed interpersonal communication and the way that individuals engage in social comparisons in their daily life. While existing literature emphasizes the negative psychological effects of both social comparison and the use of social media platforms, there remains a need to better understand the positive experiences of users in these digital spaces. Guided by social comparison theory (SCT; Festinger, 1954) and social identity theory (SIT; Tajfel & Turner, 1979), the current study applied an interpretative phenomenological approach (IPA, Smith et al., 2022) to explore how social media users interacted with beauty-centered narratives and the …
