Transgressive Body, Open Mind, And Perceptive Spirit For Nurturing Soul: A Reflection On Teaching To Transgress, Akie F. Wenk
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
In this reflection essay, I discuss my journey into the liberatory pedagogy bell hooks champions. As a foreign-born Japanese woman, who speaks English as her second language, being in the classroom itself can be seen as a transgressive act. Positioning myself as an educator who strives to creates an environment that is liberatory for me and my students, I discuss my specific experience and relationship to theories surrounding critical feminist pedagogy and how I practice these theories in my own classroom.
The Lived Experience Of The Orgasm Gap In U.S. Cisgender Women In Heterosexual Relationships, Alina Beverly Vergara-Hegi
The Lived Experience Of The Orgasm Gap In U.S. Cisgender Women In Heterosexual Relationships, Alina Beverly Vergara-Hegi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Women are not orgasming as often as men in heterosexual sexual encounters. Research has confirmed that sociocultural influences, gender differences, sexual perceptions, sexual miseducation, and relationship dynamics contribute to women’s negative sexual experiences. What has been missing is a better understanding of the experience of the orgasm gap and the role of gender ideology in women’s sexual experiences. This study explored the lived experience of the orgasm gap and gender ideology in nine cisgender women in long-term heterosexual relationships. Critical feminist theory was used as the lens to explore the meaning of sexual inequities in intimate long-term relationships. Using interpretative …
The Relationship Between Federal Employees' Viewpoints On Intrinsic Meaningful Work In The Extrinsic Work Unit Environment And Job Satisfaction., Sandra Kunz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Managers are concerned with low job satisfaction since it is a prediction of decreased productivity and increased turnover. Framed within the two-factor theory, the purpose of this quantitative correlational post-facto study was to examine the relationship between intrinsic meaningful work in the extrinsic work unit environment and job satisfaction. The participants were 1,378 U.S. federal employees from the Office of Personnel Management who completed the Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey in 2023. The results of the multiple linear regression were significant, F(2, 1375) = 900.817, p < .001, R² = .567. Recommendations for managers include aligning employees with positions that reflect their skills and interests, enhancing communication regarding the significance of individual contributions, seeking out employee feedback, and resolving any work environment challenges to foster greater job satisfaction. The implications for positive social change include the possibility for managers to advance effective leadership and communication, thereby enhancing the work environment for employees and the quality of service to customers.

Enhancing Novice Nurse Educator Success: A Comprehensive Orientation And Mentorship Program, Emily R. Luther
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Nursing education programs face challenges from faculty shortages, high turnover, and limited onboarding support for new educators. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project assessed the effectiveness of a structured orientation and mentorship program aimed at improving competency, job satisfaction, and retention among novice nurse educators within a mid-sized nursing program in the southeastern United States. The project addressed gaps in existing onboarding processes that left new faculty unprepared, which contributed to dissatisfaction and attrition. A mixed-methods pre- and post-intervention design was utilized. Quantitative data were gathered through the Self-Assessment of Nurse Educator Competencies (SANE-C), the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ), …

Minority Female Political Representation In Westchester County Politics: A View From Minority Female Elected Office Holders, Dwanita Michelle Crosby
Minority Female Political Representation In Westchester County Politics: A View From Minority Female Elected Office Holders, Dwanita Michelle Crosby
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American women have historically been underrepresented in political leadership, a disparity largely attributed to the persistent absence of structured support systems—particularly mentorship—that promote advancement across federal, state, and local levels. Existing literature highlights gender and racial disparities in political trajectories but often overlooked the specific role of mentorship in shaping leadership outcomes for African American women at the municipal level. This gap was particularly critical given the increasing civic engagement and influence of African American women in local governance. The purpose of this general qualitative study was to examine how mentorship shaped the political journeys of African American women …

A Force To Be Reckoned: Strategic Equity Sense Leadership Of Unit-Level Higher Education Leaders, Jin M. Mims
LMU Theses and Dissertations
The #BlackLivesMatter (#BLM) movement in 2020 pressured higher education institutions to address their oppressive and exclusive systems. As these institutions communicated their diversity, equity, and inclusion, (DEI) commitments and processes, it was those who took charge to facilitate the operational and cultural change for their respective area through the DEI lens, those who assumed DEI roles in their designated units, actualized the ground-level work of designing and implementing DEI programs and policies to produce the institutional progress reported by the university’s executive leadership. I will refer to those change agents as Unit-level DEI Officers (UDOs). Meanwhile, the current body of …

Firefighters face frequent physical and psychosocial stressors, increasing their risk for hypertension. Rising call volumes with a stable workforce have heightened occupational burdens. To meet their occupational demands while increasing time off-duty, fire departments across the country have switched from a 24 hours on 48 hours off (termed ‘24/48’) work schedule to one that increases the number of consecutive days off (eg, 1 day on, 3 days off, 2 days on, 3 days off (termed ‘1/3/2/3’) or 48 hours on 96 hours off (termed ‘48/96’)). However, these schedule changes come at the expense of increasing time on-duty, which may have …

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive and lethal disease characterized by excessive extracellular matrix deposition. Current IPF therapies slow disease progression but do not stop or reverse it. The (myo)fibroblasts are thought to be the main cellular contributors to excessive extracellular matrix production in IPF. Here we show that fibrotic alveolar type II cells regulate production and crosslinking of extracellular matrix via the co-transcriptional activator YAP. YAP leads to increased expression of Lysl oxidase (LOX) and subsequent LOX-mediated crosslinking by fibrotic alveolar type II cells. Pharmacological YAP inhibition via verteporfin reverses fibrotic alveolar type II cell reprogramming and LOX …

Nuclear loss and cytoplasmic buildup of the RNA-binding protein TDP-43 is a hallmark of ALS and related disorders. While studies using artificial TDP-43 depletion in neurons have revealed changes in gene expression and splicing, their relevance to actual patients remained unclear. Induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neurons (iPSNs) from 180 individuals, including controls, C9orf72 ALS/FTD, and sporadic ALS (sALS) patients were used to generate and analyze ~32,500 qRT-PCR data points across 20 genes which identified variable, time-dependent signatures of TDP-43 loss of function in individual lines. Notably, the same changes were also seen in postmortem brain tissue from the same …
