Understanding Child Noncompliance In The Early Care Setting, Melody Mann
McNair Research Journal SJSU
This study examines how teachers respond to children’s noncompliance in
early care settings. This structured observational study will focus on the
moment-to-moment interactions occurring within the preschool classroom
between both the child and teacher. It is predicted that (1) teacher’s direct
bids to children will promote greater instances of child compliance than
indirect bids, and (2) teachers’ responsive language will promote greater
instances of child compliance than restrictive language. The results of this
study will contribute to existing knowledge about the nature of teacher
child interactions in the early care settings.

Conscious Control: A Case Study On Self-Monitoring And Interventions In Maladaptive Daydreaming, Caleb Chan
McNair Research Journal SJSU
Maladaptive daydreaming (MD) is a persistent mental activity
characterized by immersive, excessive daydreaming that disrupts daily
life. This study examines the effectiveness of self-regulation strategies
in managing MD, including cognitive techniques, behavioral
adjustments, technology-assisted cues, and environmental
modifications. Using a single-subject ABA design, each intervention
phase lasted one week, with MD episodes tracked through self-reported
diaries and EEG monitoring. The results demonstrated that cognitive
reframing and task switching produced the most sustained reductions in
MD episodes, while technology-assisted cues had diminishing
effectiveness over time due to adaptation. Environmental modifications,
particularly workspace reorganization, con- tributed to long-term
improvements, while lighting adjustments …

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
With COVID-19, public health measures were adopted to prevent transmission in the workplace. As a consequence, the work environment changed with video conferencing utilized not as a novelty, but a necessity. The use of video conferencing is now routine, with 300 million daily meeting participants and ‘zoom fatigue’ a reality. Workplace culture shifted to virtual communication; however, little is known regarding the psychological impact, limiting personal engagement and collaboration and altering work relationships due to its silo effect.
The World Health Organization (WHO) provides a healthy workplace framework to protect and promote the well-being of workers by considering concerns of …

Mixed Methods Triangulation: Applying Just Culture Principles In Nurses' Transition To Practice, Manisa Baker, Rebecca Toothaker, Lora Hromadik, Randi Flexner, Linda Mcquiston, Danielle Walker
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
The transition from nursing student to registered nurse is fraught with challenges, including stress, knowledge gaps, miscommunication, and insufficient constructive feedback, which can cause uncertainty for new graduate nurses (NGNs). Although Just Culture principles are taught in nursing education, they are often difficult to apply in practice. The gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application can result in hesitation when reporting errors, communicating effectively with the healthcare team, or participating in quality improvement initiatives. This disconnect underscores the need for more robust support systems and education that bridge the transition from student to practicing nurse. This study aims to triangulate …

Oncology Caregiver Wellness Series: Boosting Resilience And Combating Burnout, Pakeeza Ali, Miles Kotchevar
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Burnout is an increasingly pressing issue in healthcare, especially for oncology caregiver teams who face immense emotional and physical demands. While wellness programs are often introduced to address burnout, the lack of clear definitions for both burnout and wellness makes it difficult to design effective solutions. Many wellness initiatives, though well-intended, fail to address the daily stresses caregivers face, particularly during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic.
From a leadership perspective, the issue becomes even more complex. As healthcare costs rise and take up a larger share of the economy, organizations are pressured to increase productivity and maximize staff efficiency. Unfortunately, …

Healing Toxic Healthcare Work Environments: Strategies For Nursing Leadership, Zelia Taylor-Pearson, Melanie A. Horning
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Nurse leaders in academic and clinical settings play pivotal roles in developing and sustaining healthy environments. Examples of toxicity are bullying, harassment, ostracism, retaliation, discrimination, favoritism, poor staffing and support, and poor communication (Chong et al., 2021). Nurse leaders can create supportive, nontoxic work environments that enhance nurses’ well-being, job satisfaction, patient care, and organizational outcomes. Leaders are crucial in integrating evidence-based practice (EBP) to transform unhealthy healthcare settings (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2023). The transformational framework supports promoting positive work atmospheres. Lappalainen et al. (2020) identified core components of transformational leadership: idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individual inspiration. …

Decreasing Organizational Knowledge Loss With Collaborative Learning Teams, Sandy Laurence Lembree
JWU Dissertations & Theses
Knowledge in organizations continues to be lost during attrition (Cox & Overbay, 2023). The Baby Boomers are retiring (Cox & Overbay, 2023), younger generations move (Brown, 2023), and self-interested employees hide knowledge (Ahmad & Karim, 2019; Anand et al., 2022) Collaborative learning teams (CLTs) increase knowledge transfer, which retains organizational knowledge (Ahmad & Karim, 2019). This mixed methods research was undertaken to investigate what contributors made a group in an organization into a CLT. Autonomy, competence development, group relatedness, psychological safety, shared goals and objectives, and leadership collaboration encouragement were explored for their relationships with being a CLT. Experiences were …
