Essays On Blocking Mechanisms In Economies With Club Goods, Sandipan Saha
Essays On Blocking Mechanisms In Economies With Club Goods, Sandipan Saha
Doctoral Theses
The thesis intends to investigate blocking mechanisms in club economies by analyzing the notion of core and bargaining sets. We adapt the framework of Ellickson et al. (1999) in this regard. Clubs in this framework are treated in a parallel fashion to private goods as articles of choice. Each club is composed of two components: (i) the profile of the club and (iii) the club project. Thus, clubs are identified through their member characteristics and the local public project they undertake. The competitive equilibria notion in our setup is known as club equilibrium, where each agent maximizes their utility through …

Exploring Underrepresented Stem Undergraduates' Stem Identity Development: The Role Of Social Partners, Sandy Cerda-Lezama
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation employs a three-study qualitative design to investigate the role of mentorship and social interaction in the identity development of racial minority undergraduate students in STEM disciplines. Grounded in Communities of Practice theory, this research amplifies student narratives to elucidate the relational and contextual factors that inform science identity, belonging, competence, and persistence in higher education. Study One draws upon interview data from fifteen participants in the BUILD program to analyze the role of recognition, particularly from expert scientists--in students' science identity development. This study aims to understand how racial and ethnic identity intersections influence the processes and impact …

Biological prompting or human teleoperation have been appealing to many researchers lately. Hands-free and voice-free command or control of vehicles, aircraft, machines, robots, etc. would provide huge convenience to users and allow them for multi-tasking. In this work, we would like to dedicate to a new biological prompting function, namely automatic directional control using instantaneous eye gaze data. In this work, we would like to investigate how to apply advanced machine-learning models to design novel automatic gaze-direction identification techniques. We explore the difficulty, namely infliction with outliers and variations, in dealing with eye-tracking data and propose to transform the original …

There is a significant knowledge gap in how T cells promote emphysema in smokers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA seq) analysis of human samples and relevant clinical data can provide new mechanistic insights into disease pathogenesis. We generated a human lung scRNA seq dataset with extensive disease characteristic annotation and analyzed a second independent scRNA seq dataset to examine the pathophysiological role of T cells in emphysema. Comparisons of pulmonary immune landscapes in emphysematous (E)-COPD, non-emphysematous (NE)-COPD, and control showed positive enrichment of T cells in E-COPD. Pathway analyses identified upregulated inflammatory states in CD4 …

To better characterize the potential biological mechanisms underlying insulin resistance (IR) and dementia, we derive cross-population and population specific polygenic scores [PSs] for fasting insulin and IR-related partitioned PSs [pPSs]. We conduct a cross-sectional study of the associations of these genetic scores with neurological outcomes in >17k participants (36% men, mean age 55 yrs) from the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program (50% Non-Hispanic White, 23% Black/African American, 21% Hispanic/Latino American, and 4% Asian American). We report significant negative associations (P < 0.002) of the cross-population (P = 1.3 × 10-5) and European (PEA = 3.0 × 10-8) fasting insulin PSs with total cranial volume, and of a metabolic syndrome European PS with general cognitive function (BEA = -0.13, PEA = 0.0002) and lateral ventricular volume (BEA = 0.09, PEA = 0.002). We identify suggestive negative associations (P < 0.007) of metabolic syndrome and obesity pPSs with general cognitive function, and of lipodystrophy pPSs with total cranial volume. A higher genetic predisposition to IR is associated with lower brain size, and a genetic predisposition to specific IR-related type 2 diabetes subtypes, such as metabolic syndrome and mechanisms of IR mediated through obesity and lipodystrophy, is potentially involved in cognitive decline.

The timed contraction and relaxation of myofibers in tissues such as the heart and skeletal muscle occur via the tightly regulated movement of calcium ions into and out of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). In skeletal muscle, this phenomenon enables humans to exercise, perform day-to-day tasks, and to breathe. Sarcolipin, a small regulatory protein, prevents calcium ions from entering the SR by binding to and inhibiting SERCA, contributing to myofiber contraction. Disruptions in sarcolipin (SLN) expression are implicated in the pathophysiology of obesity and musculoskeletal disease. However, the mechanisms regulating sarcolipin expression are not clearly understood. We recently showed that site-1 …

Effective Engagement In Online Asynchronous Graduate Courses: How Students Perceive Engagement In Their Graduate Programs, Matthew A. Galeota, Robert M. Mangione, Stephanie M. Foote
New York Journal of Student Affairs
An increase in online learning has created a set of new challenges for higher education institutions. Institutions seek to retain students and ensure they are engaged in their courses. This paper examines forms of engagement that traditional and nontraditional students perceive in their online asynchronous graduate courses at a public flagship university. The authors examined relevant literature and surveyed students across several online graduate education programs. The survey shows that collaborative engagement, specifically the indicator of connecting to institutional opportunities, is the lowest tallied. This suggests that online graduate programs should seek to implement more collaborative engagement indicators. The survey …

The global population of 1 billion people ≥ age 60 is expected to double by 2050, likely increasing the prevalence of age-related cognitive decline (Alzheimer’s Association, 2019). Examining biological, psychological, and social (biopsychosocial) factors and possible moderation by other critical factors, including neighborhood physical disorder (i.e., graffiti, litter, vandalism, safety) and cohesion (i.e., mutual trust/solidarity between neighbors), may inform development of targeted interventions to improve biopsychosocial and cognitive health. Human-animal interaction (HAI) has been found to improve health outcomes and may be a viable option to enhance biopsychosocial factors and delay cognitive decline in older adults (Gee et al., 2017). …

Tangology Simulation: An Experiential Simulation To Understand Leadership And Followership, Martina Gallagher, Linda Sheen, Darlene Acorda, Kelli Galle
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: Leadership is emphasized in many healthcare disciplines, especially nursing1. However, learning about leadership typically occurs in the context of readings and discussions, which do not provide students with the visceral experiences needed to critically reflect on what is required of them to lead effectively2. Furthermore, there is limited discussion about followership, or what is required of a good follower to collaborate effectively within a healthcare team3.
Purpose: The purpose of the Tangology Simulation is to provide students with an experiential activity that emulates the roles of leadership and followership in a non-threatening environment. …

Valid And Reliable? Psychometric Evaluation Of A Preceptorship Survey, Leonie Declerk
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Health professions use a preceptorship model for clinical education. Numerous studies have evaluated barriers and facilitators to nurse practitioner (NP) preceptorship. However, few used theory-guided, psychometrically-sound, survey instruments. My purpose was to develop and test validity and reliability of a preceptorship survey, using the Integrated Behavioral Model (IBM) as a framework. I developed a pool of 82 survey items that reflected 11 constructs in the IBM from published literature and unpublished research findings. Eight faculty and 12 NP preceptors evaluated content-validity and clarity of the items, and one item was removed. The survey was deployed to a sample …
