Targeting RNA with small molecules represents a promising yet relatively unexplored avenue for the design of new drugs. Nevertheless, challenges arise from the lack of computational models and techniques able to accurately model RNA systems, and predict their binding affinities to small molecules. Here, we tackle these difficulties by developing a tailored state-of-the-art approach for absolute binding free energy calculations of RNA-binding small molecules. For this, we combine the advanced AMOEBA polarizable force field to the newly developed lambda-Adaptive Biasing Force scheme associated to refined restraints allowing for efficient sampling. To capture the free energy barrier associated to challenging RNA …

The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis and influencing various aspects of host physiology, including immune function. Recent advances have highlighted the emerging importance of the complement system, particularly the C3 protein, as a key player in microbiota-host interactions. Traditionally known for its role in innate immunity, the complement system is now recognized for its interactions with microbial communities within the gut, where it promotes immune tolerance and protects against enteric infections. This Review explores the gut complement system as a possibly novel frontier in microbiota-host communication and examines its role in shaping microbial diversity, modulating …
A Multicriteria Decision Model For Sustainable Port Functions In Environmental Perspectives
A Multicriteria Decision Model For Sustainable Port Functions In Environmental Perspectives
Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)
Port operations, while critical to global trade and economic growth, contribute significantly to environmental pressures through activities such as vessel traffic, cargo handling, dredging, and on-dock transportation, leading to emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Hence, it is of priority to have a systematic evaluation and prioritization of sustainability measures across port functions. This study employs a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), to evaluate and prioritize key functional roles and subfunctions that contribute to port sustainability performance. By engaging expert judgment from two leading ports in Malaysia, the analysis identifies stakeholder priorities on the emphasis …

Designing A Community Based Information System Using Activity Theory A Case Study In Taman Lapangan Jaya, Norsyazwani Hafizah Reduan, Kamalia Azma Kamaruddin
Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)
Effective communication and information sharing are vital for active neighbourhood participation, yet many communities still rely on informal group chats that lead to fragmented updates, lost documents, and frequent miscommunication. This study addresses this gap by applying Activity Theory (AT) to systematically identify requirements for a centralized community communication and information-sharing platform in Taman Lapangan Jaya. Using AT, the seven elements of activity were mapped to reveal key issues such as the communication bottleneck, lack of document accessibility, and unclear division of responsibilities. These findings informed the design of a web-based system featuring structured document repositories, role-based information management, and …

Modified Hungarian Method For Lecturer To Course Assignment A Multi Objective Mathematical Programming Model, Nur Syahirah Ibrahim, Adibah Shuib, Zati Aqmar Zaharudin
Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)
Efficient lecturer-to-course assignment is crucial for ensuring both faculty satisfaction and optimal teaching outcomes in higher education institutions. This study presents an advanced optimization model based on the Modified Hungarian Method (MHM) to address this challenge by integrating lecturers' preference levels and competency scores. While previous research has primarily focused on the traditional Hungarian Method (HM), limited attention has been given to its modified version. Moreover, the incorporation of preference-competency-based criteria in lecturer assignments is still lacking. To bridge these gaps, this study develops a mathematical programming approach to refine the MHM framework. The proposed model, called the Preference-Competency Multi-Objective …

Background: Pediatric cholestatic liver diseases can be characterized by rapidly progressive fibrosis. A multicenter cross-sectional analysis of vibration-controlled elastography in biliary atresia (BA), alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (A1AT), and Alagille syndrome (ALGS) was leveraged to interrogate the plasma proteome relative to liver stiffness measurements (LSM).
Methods: Slow off-rate modified aptamer scanning profiling of >7000 proteins in plasma from 187 children with BA (n=93), A1AT (n=31), ALGS (n=46), and healthy pediatric controls (n=17) was performed, and correlations with LSM were undertaken.
Results: There was an abundance of LSM correlated proteins (BA n=2720, A1AT n=694, ALGS n=5968). Interestingly, a distinct plasma proteome was …
Exploring Impacts Of Diversity Ideologies On Allyship (Intergroup Responsiveness), Fiona Nguyen
Exploring Impacts Of Diversity Ideologies On Allyship (Intergroup Responsiveness), Fiona Nguyen
Dissertations and Theses
Colorblindness and multiculturalism are widely studied diversity ideologies that reflect prominent attitudes about how diversity should be understood and managed, as they can help predict individual behavior. Colorblindness proposes that distinct group identities should be ignored, and can be used to exclude minoritized groups and downplay racial minorities' experiences, whereas multiculturalism embraces and values group differences, can foster inclusive environments for minority groups, and leads to positive intergroup outcomes such as reduced prejudice. Despite much research dedicated to exploring the intergroup outcomes of diversity ideologies, few studies have examined their impacts on specific interpersonal interactions, particularly allyship. Research has defined …

Anxiety disorders are common in children and cause significant impairment. Family accommodation, which refers to behavioral changes that family members make to temporarily alleviate a child’s anxiety, has been linked to child anxiety symptom severity. Although emotional vulnerabilities for anxiety such as emotion dysregulation, anxiety sensitivity, and distress intolerance have been associated with family accommodation, research concerning the relationship between these constructs among anxious youth is limited. We hypothesized that these variables would be uniquely and positively associated with family accommodation and would moderate the relationship between anxiety symptom severity and family accommodation. Treatment-seeking child–parent dyads (N = 90; …

Objectives: Emergency department (ED) visits offer opportunities for seriously ill patients to formulate future medical care goals, yet ED clinicians lack practical strategies for these conversations. ED GOAL, a behavioral intervention, engages seriously ill yet clinically stable older adults in the ED to address advance care planning (ACP) with their outpatient clinicians. In a randomized trial, goals-of-care documentation was significantly higher in the intervention group compared to controls after three (24.3% vs. 9.9%, p = 0.03) and 6 months (31.4% vs. 12.7%, p < 0.01). This study is a sub-analysis to learn about intervention arm participants' perceived benefits and obstacles of the intervention.
Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews between October 2022 and August 2024 (N = 52) with intervention-arm patients …

Dignity And Deepfakes, Michael Goodyear
Dignity And Deepfakes, Michael Goodyear
Articles & Chapters
Today, we face a dangerous technosocial combination: AI-generated deepfakes and the Internet. Believable and accessible, these deepfakes have already spread sex, lies, and false advertisements across the Internet and targeted everyone from Taylor Swift to middle school students. Dissemination of deepfakes inflicts multifarious dignitary harms against their victims—especially women and LGBTQ+ persons—stripping them of control over their own identities, harming their reputations, and ostracizing them from society through shame.
Yet this is not the first time a new technology for capturing one’s likeness and a method for disseminating images threatened individuals’ dignity. In the late nineteenth century, the right of …

Platform liability is a complex landscape under U.S. law. The immunity for users’ torts provided by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act has understandably garnered the most attention. In addition, many intellectual property law scholars have also examined the requirements of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (“DMCA”), which provides safe harbors for users’ copyright infringements. The DMCA enumerates a long series of requirements that online platforms must satisfy to be immunized for their users’ infringements, including a notice-and-takedown regime, a repeat infringer policy, and a prohibition on having the right and ability to control and a direct financial benefit. …

A predictive correlational research design was utilized in this empirical study. The researcher used a correlational research design to investigate the relationship between …
Cephalopod Consciousness: Asking The Right Questions, Gordon Burghardt
Cephalopod Consciousness: Asking The Right Questions, Gordon Burghardt
Animal Sentience
Jennifer Mather has provided a comprehensive and fascinating overview of the various cognitive accomplishments of cephalopods and their sensory, behavioral, and neurophysiological attributes. The advances in our understanding of a clade that has been separated from vertebrate evolution by well over half a billion years is a testament to advances in both methodology and the questions we now feel free to address. Mather embeds her review in the issue of consciousness, which is certainly a perennial issue in mental evolution, going back to Romanes and earlier. I argue that the term “consciousness” has such a checkered history and is used …

Molecular And Genetic Landscapes Of Retina And Brain Microglia In Neurodegenerative Diseases, Khang Ma, Rinki Ratnapriya
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Microglia-driven dysregulation has emerged as a significant underlying mechanism in many neurodegenerative diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although both brain and retinal microglia originate from the yolk sac, it is uncertain whether they share molecular similarities or genetic and molecular foundations related to neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we examine the transcriptomic and epigenetic profiles of retina and brain microglia through integrative analyses of single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) and single-nucleus ATAC sequencing (snATAC-seq) from 97 independent human samples across 11 different studies. Our findings reveal that retina and brain microglia share similar expression and …

Journal of Agricultural and Marine Sciences
Empirical evidence indicates that rising consumption of animal meat negatively could contribute to climate change and public health. As a result, meat alternatives such as plant-based meat (PBM) have emerged as a potential solution. However, there seems to be a dearth of insights regarding significant drivers of people’s behavioral intentions (BI) towards PBM. This study leverages the theory of planned behavior to determine whether attitude, social norms, and perceived behavioral control influence BI towards PBM. Survey data was collected from 380 respondents in Oman to test the relationships between the constructs in the research framework. The results indicated that attitude …

Prior research on facial expression recognition (FER) has shown that the use of face masks significantly impairs the ability to correctly identify facial expressions, especially those that engage the lower regions of the face such as disgust and anger (Carbon, 2020; McCrackin et al. 2022). Not only does FER accuracy decrease with a masked or occluded face, but gaze patterns also shift and dwell time increases from those areas that are covered (mouth) to areas uncovered (eyes) (Rabadan, et al. 2022). In situations where both eyes and mouth are covered, the gaze …
