Slb-Mssim: A Spectral Library-Based Multiplex Segmented Sim Platform For Single-Cell Proteomic Analysis, Lakmini Senavirathna, Cheng Ma, Van-An Duong, Hong-Yuan Tsai, Ru Chen, Sheng Pan
The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine
Mass spectrometry (MS)-based single-cell proteomics, while highly challenging, offers unique potential for a wide range of applications to interrogate cellular heterogeneity, trajectories, and phenotypes at a functional level. We report here the development of the spectral library-based multiplex segmented selected ion monitoring (SLB-msSIM) method, a conceptually unique approach with significantly enhanced sensitivity and robustness for single-cell analysis. The single-cell MS data is acquired by a multiplex segmented selected ion monitoring (msSIM) technique, which sequentially applies multiple isolation cycles with the quadrupole using a wide isolation window in each cycle to accumulate and store precursor ions in the C-trap for a …

Recognizing and updating bacterial names is key to communication between the veterinary clinical microbiology laboratory, veterinarians, and clients. Moraxella oculi sp. nov., distinct from Moraxella bovis and Moraxella bovoculi, was isolated from a cow with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. Several respiratory pathogens were recognized, including Neisseria leonii sp. nov. described from rabbits, Mannheimia indoligenes sp. nov. described from cattle in Europe, and Moraxella haemolytica sp. nov. described from a goat in China. Stenotrophomonas forensis sp. nov. is a novel designation within the Stenotrophomonas maltophilia complex associated with isolates derived from horses. New additions to the Campylobacter genus included Campylobacter californiensis …

What’S In It For Us? Tell A Colleague, Christopher J. Smiley
AADEJ - The Communicator
AADEJ President Dr. Chris Smiley advocates for a reframing of volunteer organizations' focus from "What’s in it for me?" to "What’s in it for us?" to ensure viability. This change is necessary given the declining membership trends in organized dentistry, with the ADA’s market share approaching 50%. The AADEJ, operating with limited resources, concentrates on fundamental, mission-based services that benefit the collective community of dental editors and journalists. These core services include focused continuing education necessary to earn the Certified Dental Editor credential and guidance on ethical issues, such as editor autonomy and the emerging presence of AI. By focusing …

AADEJ - The Communicator
AADEJ Executive Director Denise Maihofer announces key organizational expansions and updates, starting with thanks to volunteers for the 2025 Conference. The most significant change is the restructuring of the Publication Membership, which, for the same $395 fee, will now include up to three AADEJ voting members on an editorial team. This provides substantial cost savings, equating to a $350 savings compared to previous options. The message confirms that the 2026 Dental Editors University (DEU) will be held at the AAOMS Daniel M. Laskin Institute in Rosemont, Illinois, following highly praised reviews of the 2024 event. Furthermore, AADEJ is beginning its …

It’S Not Elementary, My Dear Ai, Mali Schantz-Feld Ma, Cde
AADEJ - The Communicator
In this issue, Associate Editor Mali Schantz-Feld cautions dental communicators about the irresponsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), highlighting three major risks. The first is the fabrication or "hallucination" of non-existent scholarly references, exemplified by submitted articles where more than half of the citations were fake. The second risk is the removal of human personality, emotion, and nuance, which causes content to feel robotic; this occurred when a profile of an inspiring dentist was run through AI, stripping away their inner light and philosophy. The third danger is the generation of statistics, charts, or figures without providing necessary data or …
Metaphysical Quandary Of Synthetic Media Transparency, Darrell G. Mottley
Metaphysical Quandary Of Synthetic Media Transparency, Darrell G. Mottley
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping our view of reality. The interaction between human creativity and generative AI presents both opportunities and challenges concerning free speech and innovation. AI’s transformative impact on perceptions of innovation complicates discussions surrounding creativity and societal expectations. A human-centric perspective in the debate over government-mandated transparency for AI-generated creative works reveals a notable conflict. This conflict arises from the need to balance the protection of human creativity with an apparent obligation to provide information about the human or nonhuman origins of creative works. As society increasingly relies on AI technologies to produce art, literature, and other …
The Public Health Cost Of Online Behavioral Targeting, Arthi Annadurai
The Public Health Cost Of Online Behavioral Targeting, Arthi Annadurai
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
Behavioral targeting is an increasingly popular marketing technique that utilizes users’ online activity to personalize advertisements aimed at consumers. However, since personalized advertisements aim to influence individual consumers, behavioral targeting can negatively impact vulnerable users. For instance, it may reinforce harmful behaviors—like showing alcohol advertisements to individuals with alcohol dependency—or worsen mental health struggles, such as prolonging grief by continuing to serve parenting advertisements to those mourning the loss of a child. These practices can perpetuate harmful behaviors, such as relapse or heightened psychological distress, and contribute to long-term health problems, such as addiction or other mental health problems, creating …

Dignity And Deepfakes, Michael Goodyear
Dignity And Deepfakes, Michael Goodyear
Articles & Chapters
Today, we face a dangerous technosocial combination: AI-generated deepfakes and the Internet. Believable and accessible, these deepfakes have already spread sex, lies, and false advertisements across the Internet and targeted everyone from Taylor Swift to middle school students. Dissemination of deepfakes inflicts multifarious dignitary harms against their victims—especially women and LGBTQ+ persons—stripping them of control over their own identities, harming their reputations, and ostracizing them from society through shame.
Yet this is not the first time a new technology for capturing one’s likeness and a method for disseminating images threatened individuals’ dignity. In the late nineteenth century, the right of …

Introduction: Ambient artificial intelligence (AAI) is increasingly being integrated into clinical workflows to address the documentation burden contributing to clinician burnout. AAI systems use automatic speech recognition and natural language processing to capture real-time clinician–patient dialogue and generate structured documentation within the electronic health record. Methods: This review examines AAI’s technical foundations, clinical applications, and implementation considerations in oncology practice. We describe how current AAI tools extract, classify, and populate relevant clinical content, such as the history of present illness, physical examination findings, and assessment and plan, while adhering to established US coding standards (e.g., International Classification of Diseases [ICD-10]). …

Pressure measurement in clinical practice is a valuable tool for diagnostic evaluation, especially in diseases such as portal hypertension. Currently, portal pressures are measured by invasive hepatic vein catheterization, posing risks to patients, and limiting how often measurements can be obtained. Subharmonic-aided pressure estimation (SHAPE) is an ultrasound-based technique that leverages ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) to estimate changes in hydrostatic pressure. UCAs act as nonlinear oscillators when exposed to high enough acoustic pressures (typically > 200 kPa) and produce significant energy components ranging from subharmonics to higher harmonics. Tissues do not generate significant subharmonic components, thus making it the optimal component …

Regulating Cryptocurrency Airdrops, Peter Sie
Regulating Cryptocurrency Airdrops, Peter Sie
Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property
A significant number of blockchain users is U.S.-based. However, regulatory ambiguity imposes barriers for U.S. users to fully and legally embrace blockchain technology, especially when it comes to cryptocurrencies. The industry remains rife with bad actors and inadequate regulation that consequently harm investors. Recently, a phenomenon known as cryptocurrency airdrops—widely viewed as “free” token distributions to incentivize blockchain adoption and promote decentralization—has drawn significant attention. But is this just another sham under the guise of the commonly touted “decentralization” ethos of blockchain technology?
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has maintained that most cryptocurrencies are securities subject to regulation. However, …

Colaborate: A Mixed-Methods Approach To Enabling Inclusive Dialogue Of Emotional Regulation Resources For Young Autistic Children, Sarai E. Deese
Senior Theses
Emotion regulation (ER) is a critical developmental milestone and is often delayed or more difficult for autistic children. Publicly available resources for birth-5-year-olds with autism could benefit significantly by integrating the values of and information provided by autistic adults. However, existing resources may have poor accessibility, acceptability, and feasibility according to different groups within the autism community, creating a significant gap in effective support. This mixed-methods study investigated ER experiences, resource knowledge, and resource desire among autistic adults (N=4; Stage 1) and caregivers of young autistic children (N=4; Stage 2) to inform the development of acceptable ER supports. In Stage …

Background: The integration of services for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) has gained increasing attention in recent years because of the overlapping prevalence and shared risk factors between these health conditions. However, successful integration requires more than just the alignment of clinical practices. The role of institutional support and organisational culture in promoting effective integration remains an underexplored area.
Aim: This study aims to fill this gap by examining how institutional structures and organisational values influence the integration of HIV and NCD care.
Setting: The study setting was Nakuru County in Kenya.

Cardozo Law Review
Reading food, drug, and cosmetic labels is a frequent practice for all individuals with allergies. However, unlike those who are allergic to peanuts, dairy, or another major food allergen, individuals with celiac disease (“celiac consumers”) are not offered a bold, capitalized statement clearly identifying the allergen they seek to avoid. Instead, celiac consumers are tasked with studying a list of ingredients and relying on their own ability to catch any sources of gluten. This Note considers the authority provided by Congress to the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to remedy this rash regime. Then, this Note proposes that the …

Assessing Cognitive Abilities In Students With Hearing Loss And Specific Learning Disabilities, Pooja Gupta, Corinna V. Cole, William H. Blackwell
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
This literature review synthesizes approximately 30 years of research on students from kindergarten through 12th grade with hearing impairments who are suspected of having a specific learning disability (SLD). Assessing SLDs in these students presents significant challenges, particularly when evaluating cognitive abilities using the Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) theory of intelligence. This theory encompasses seven broad cognitive domains that influence academic success in reading, mathematics, and writing, including crystallized intelligence, fluid and sequential reasoning, long-term and short-term memory, visual processing, auditory processing, and processing speed. Since auditory processing is inherently affected in students with hearing impairments, this review excludes it from discussion. …

Toward A Nuanced Understanding Of Health And Human Services Students' Perceptions Of Autism, Leslie A. Meskin, Annemarie Connor, Sarah Fabrizi, Ann Tilman, Joanna Salapska-Gelleri, Noelle Balsamo
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
Continually increasing rates of autism necessitate research-informed preparation of pre-service professionals who will work with this population. This mixed-method study examined health and human services students’ autism knowledge, bias, and interaction to inform training and education needs. Results extend the extant literature suggesting autism knowledge and interaction are necessary but insufficient in mitigating bias. Specifically, the nature of prior interaction, positive or negative, shapes both bias and proclivity for additional interaction. Lastly, self-reflection was identified as a latent and potentially impactful factor in shaping a more nuanced and less biased understanding of autism. Recommendations for education and research are discussed.
