From Nature To Finance: The Language Of Environmental Governance Through Unep Reports, Elizabeth Aiken
From Nature To Finance: The Language Of Environmental Governance Through Unep Reports, Elizabeth Aiken
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
This project applies the computational text analysis methods from Franco Moretti and Dominique Pestre's "Bankspeak" to examine how the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) language has evolved in its annual reports from 1975 to 2024. Founded in 1972 as the UN’s main environmental authority, the UNEP plays a vital role in global discourse surrounding climate change and environmental challenges. Using Python-based computational methods to track word frequencies, semantic clusters, and grammatical patterns across five decades of annual reports, this analysis reveals three distinct linguistic periods. These periods include an early period (1975-1989), which emphasizes nature and scientific terms, a middle …
Emotional Stability And Deception In Multi-Agent Ai Negotiations Tracking Emotional Drift, Persuasion And Influence Using Valence-Arousal-Dominance, Godwin Idowu
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
Today, large language models are often applied as smart agents who are capable of communicating, negotiating and making decisions together in the same space. In this work, I designed a test scenario where three different AI agents, having different goals, a cooperative helper, a competitive maximizer, and a deceptive agent, are sharing resources in a number of rounds. I would like to observe how the different goals of the agents affect the emotions of the agents. Each time the agents meet, I interpret their communications to assign them numerical values that measure the intensity of their perceived positivity, excitement, or …
The Fear Factor: Exploring The Experiences Of Fear Of Secondary School Teachers, Kelly J. Raines
The Fear Factor: Exploring The Experiences Of Fear Of Secondary School Teachers, Kelly J. Raines
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
Fear can be a powerful catalyst for cognitive potential, or a potent agent of havoc. This descriptive (transcendental) phenomenological study aimed to understand the phenomenon of fear experienced by teachers in public and private secondary schools in Central Florida. Semi-structured interviews collected data from the purposive sample, and the data were thoroughly analyzed using Colaizzi's (1978) model. The emergent essence of the lived experience of teachers identified the phenomenon of fear as the inducement of a debilitating sense of powerlessness that diminishes self-confidence and self-efficacy, resulting in emotional, cognitive, and/or physical impairments that directly affect the metacognitive potential of teachers. …
Much Ado About Critical Race Theory, Matthew Patrick Shaw
Much Ado About Critical Race Theory, Matthew Patrick Shaw
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
This Article offers novel observation and critical intervention in the challenge to state laws which have been adopted, allegedly, to prevent the teaching of critical race theory
(CRT) in public schools. Against the trend of recent scholarship that understands these laws as curricular censorship of topical subjects and seeks to contest their validity on those grounds, this Article more accurately identifies them as pedagogical censorship: Limits on teaching methods, which raise different, potentially more dispositive questions about the states’ educational decision-making authority—questions that the U.S. Supreme Court has long sought to avoid. But exposing these so-called “anti-CRT” laws as neither …

Ethical Sourcing In The Context Of Health Data Supply Chain Management: A Value Sensitive Design Approach, Camille Nebeker Edd, Ms, Ellen Wright Clayton, Et Al.
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Abstract
Objective
The Bridge2AI program is establishing rules of practice for creating ethically sourced health data repositories to support the effective use of ML/AI in biomedical and behavioral research. Given the initially undefined nature of ethically sourced data, this work concurrently developed definitions and guidelines alongside repository creation, grounded in a practical, operational framework.
Materials and Methods
A Value Sensitive Design (VSD) approach was used to explore ethical tensions across stages of health data repository development. The conceptual investigation drew from supply chain management (SCM) processes to (1) identify actors who would interact with or be affected by the data …
Domestic Stability And International Trade Order, Sannoy Das
Domestic Stability And International Trade Order, Sannoy Das
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
This Article challenges the theoretical frameworks through which we have so far apprehended the crisis of the liberal international trade and economic order, precipitated by relentless unilateral action--whether tariffs or industrial policy--especally in the United States. It argues that the conventional concerns about unilateralism overlook the ways in which unilateraism has been--and can be-- a foundation for international order rather than its antithesis. Our contemporary difficulty is that we typically understand unilateral action as a breach of an international norm. This way of thinking follows from nineteenth-century liberal internationalism. But a deeper tradition in the law of nations shows that …
Resilient Families, Thriving Communities, Melanie Phillips
Resilient Families, Thriving Communities, Melanie Phillips
Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
Goal Statement: My goal as a future marriage counselor is to reduce the number of marriages that end in divorce in my community. I aim to achieve this through preventative measures designed to increase relationship resilience and promote the overall well-being of families and the community. Significant Findings: This paper explores the rising divorce rates in Thatcher, Arizona, and highlights preventative measures to strengthen marriages in order to reduce marital dissolution. Key findings suggest that proactive interventions, such as marriage education programs and the passing of pro-marriage public policies, are more cost-effective than addressing the consequences of divorce (U.S. National …

Housing Instability And The Prevention Of Recidivism In Travis County, Helen Carter
Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
Goal Statement: To reduce and prevent homelessness for those individuals being released from incarceration to aid recidivism prevention, through the expansion and maximization of re-entry programs prior to release. Significant Findings: Both homelessness and recidivism are significant problems in the Travis County area. Data showed over 6,000 individuals were unhoused per day in 2024 (ECHO, n.d.), with recidivism costing the state of Texas almost $370 million per year. There is also a strong association between having been incarcerated, being unhoused, and subsequent recidivism, with a 10 times higher likelihood of being homeless (Couloute, 2018). In addition, this demographic faces many …

Addressing Mental Health And Homelessness In The Lower Valley, Viere Arellano-Almazan
Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
Goal Statement: To reduce homelessness in the Lower Yakima Valley by implementing early intervention and culturally responsive mental health prevention strategies that enhance access to care, reduce stigma, and strengthen community resilience. Significant Findings: The Lower Yakima Valley faces significant challenges in addressing the intersection of mental health and homelessness due to limited access to culturally and linguistically appropriate care. Research indicates that rural residents particularly Hispanic immigrant and farmworker populations experience elevated levels of psychological distress, stigma, and barriers to accessing services (Armstrong et al., 2022). Applying the Social-Ecological Model has illuminated how multiple interconnected factors influence vulnerability, including …

Multilateral Organizations And Health Emergency Management During Crisis: The Case Study Of The World Health Organization During Covid-19 Pandemic, Aya Helmy Hamada
Theses and Dissertations
Multilateral organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), play a key role in managing health emergencies during crises. During the COVID-19 pandemic, WHO achieved significant progress by supporting countries with technical assistance, guidelines, and essential resources. As well as providing technical guidance, sharing information, and coordinating among member states. This experience highlighted the importance of WHO in tackling global public health problems and showed how multilateral collaboration can help address complex challenges. Moreover, risk and crisis communication proved to be a critical part of WHO’s response, ensuring that clear and timely information reached the public and stakeholders. Despite these …
Attribution As Architecture In The Digital Age, Laura A. Heymann
Attribution As Architecture In The Digital Age, Laura A. Heymann
Faculty Publications
As technology changes, one thing remains constant: human creators seem to care about attribution, whether as creators or as audience members. Current U.S. law lacks the means for many creators to effectively address attributional interests, and experience has shown that top-down, imposed technological solutions can fail to gain the necessary buy-in and adoption. The best approach, examples suggest, is for platforms to think of attribution as part of the architecture of their systems, but to take their cues from user-developed, individualized solutions, which will not only be more responsive to user interests but also allow adaptation as interests change and …

Attachment Styles Connection To Teacher Burnout, Erica Jaeschke
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Teacher burnout has become a concern, as teachers are leaving the classroom more frequently than in the past. A teacher's attachment may be associated with the development and persistence of teacher burnout. The problem with this topic is that teachers are leaving the classroom at alarming rates, which is problematic because schools will not have the support they need to educate future generations. This study aims to determine whether teacher burnouts are associated with specific attachment theories. A quantitative method was employed through voluntary survey questions, and 18 teachers participated.

Employing Local Partnerships To Cultivate Student-Centered Business Curriculum, Emily A. Blok
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Students sitting in high school business classes are often distracted, dissatisfied, and bored with the curriculum that teachers are expected to teach. There is a lack of resources and time when it comes to truly engaging students and preparing them for their futures, but research has shown that many students often pursue degrees or some element of business in their post-secondary education, not to mention the skills and capacities developed in business classes make their way into every student’s daily life. This study aims to identify the curriculum that would be best for high school students to engage in, so …

The Impact Of Play-Based Learning On Preschool Engagement And Goal Progress, Jennifer Martin
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
This capstone research project explored the impact of play-based learning on preschool student engagement and progress toward individualized learning goals. Data points were collected using both quantitative and qualitative methods, including observational charts and anecdotal notes. Findings indicated that structured play opportunities increased peer interaction, persistence, and sustained engagement for students’ who initially demonstrated low participation with activities and with peers. The results suggest that intentional play-based learning environments provide natural opportunities for children to make measurable progress toward their developmental goals. Implications for practice, limitations of the study, and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Cooperative Learning And The Impact On Student Engagement, Erin Pint
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Cooperative learning is an essential instructional approach that supports student engagement. There is limited implementation of this learning method in the classroom which leads to students lacking motivation and opportunities to collaborate with their peers. Research has shown that when teachers incorporate cooperative learning experiences, students demonstrate increased participation which leads to deeper understanding of the content. This inquiry-based research study aims to determine whether cooperative learning can improve student engagement. The study utilized a qualitative approach, using both student and educator surveys as well as field notes. Findings revealed that most students prefer learning alongside at least one peer …
Improving The Use Of Evidence To Support Historical Arguments In A Secondary Classroom, Dylan Vandyke
Improving The Use Of Evidence To Support Historical Arguments In A Secondary Classroom, Dylan Vandyke
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
The study of history is too often relegated to the basic skills of memorization and summarization. Teaching students history, however, should not be just memorization. Research has shown that the ability of students to take multiple perspectives, analyze cause and effect, and make well-reasons assertions is much more valuable than basic memorization. Tying all these skills together is the concept of being able to present an argument with specific supporting evidence that helps to prove the point. Many freshmen in entry-level high school history courses struggle to use this skill well. This inquiry-based research study aims to help understand why …

Domestic Military Deployments After Trump V. United States, Chris Mirasola
Domestic Military Deployments After Trump V. United States, Chris Mirasola
William & Mary Law Review
The current legal regime governing domestic military deployments was, largely, born of the Civil War. While conflict was ongoing, Congress enacted what are now a pair of statutes criminalizing military interference with federal elections. And as a coda to Reconstruction, Congress criminalized using the military as a civilian law enforcement force. Over the past 160 years, successive Congresses and Presidents have steadily chipped away at these crucial criminal-law protections. In 2024, the Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. United States further undermined the limitations that remained.
In Trump, the Supreme Court held that Presidents enjoy, at minimum, a presumption …
