Decarbonization Is Happening In U.S. Higher Education, But Carbon Neutrality Goals Alone Are Not Delivering It, Alexander R. Barron, Nubraz F. Khan, Greta Anesko, Emma S. Larsen, Junwen Ding, Shey P. Sanges, Aaron L. Strong
Environmental Science and Policy: Faculty Publications
Carbon neutrality emerged as an overall framework for climate action several decades ago, with the assumption that institutions would follow a carbon management hierarchy - reducing their own emissions (i.e. decarbonization) and relying on high-quality offsets to address any residual emissions. In practice, offsets and other accounting-based emissions reductions have often dominated both discussion and action. However, sector-wide studies examining the balance between decarbonization and offsetting have been limited. Here, we examine 23 U.S. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) that have declared carbon neutrality and contrast their direct (Scope 1) greenhouse gas emissions reduction efforts with a broader universe of U.S. …

Green Synthesis Of Silver Nanoparticles Using Sumac Fruit By Microwave And Traditional Methods: Characterization, Anticancer, And Antimicrobial Activities, Melek Hinis, Tuğçe Karaduman Yeşi̇ldal, Demet Erdönmez, Ayfer Menteş
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) was carried out with sumac fruit extract using a microwave-assisted (MWA) method and a traditional method (TDM). The properties of nanoparticles synthesized by both methods were characterized and compared.Although both methods are environmentally friendly, the MWA method was faster, more efficient, and economical. When creating Ag-NPs, variables like temperature, pH, reaction duration, extract concentration, and silver ion concentration were considered. The production of Ag-NPs was confirmed by ultraviolet–visible spectra that displayed the surface plasmon resonance band centered at 433 and 436 nm in the MWA and TDM techniques, respectively. The results of the scanning …

Examining Children’S Intuitive Understanding Of Mechanical Systems With A Gears Assembly Task, Nicole Taboada
Examining Children’S Intuitive Understanding Of Mechanical Systems With A Gears Assembly Task, Nicole Taboada
Theses
Children’s causal reasoning about machines and their components is crucial for acquiring knowledge about science and math. Mechanistic understanding involves knowing how parts can be effectively connected to work together as a functional mechanical system. Little is known about how children’s understanding of mechanical systems develops across the lifespan. Legare and Lombrozo (2014) developed a gears assembly task to assess children’s understanding and learning of mechanics but did not track this skill across ages. The present study adapted the gears assembly task to measure mechanistic understanding in children between the ages of 4 to 11 years and adults. The goal …
Association Between Fall Risk And Orthostatic Hypotension In The Elderly In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Pramod Srikant Kshirasagar
Association Between Fall Risk And Orthostatic Hypotension In The Elderly In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Pramod Srikant Kshirasagar
Doctorate in Kinesiology
Background: Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is an underrecognized contributor to falls among older adults, particularly in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) where frailty, multimorbidity, and polypharmacy is common. Methods: Thirty-three SNF residents aged ≥65 years completed orthostatic testing after five minutes supine and at one and three minutes of standing. Fall and injury histories were extracted from records and resident reports. Analyses included nonparametric tests, logistic regression, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, and exploratory qualitative coding of injury descriptions. Results: Systolic and diastolic blood pressures decreased significantly from supine to standing (both p < .001). OH was more prevalent among fallers than non-fallers (96% vs 40%; χ2(1) = 12.68, p = .007). In logistic regression with OH as the outcome, fall history was strongly associated with OH (OR = 27.0, 95% CI [3.67–198.69], p = .001); ROC analysis showed excellent discrimination (AUC = 0.84, p = .029). The most frequently coded injuries were hip and femur fractures, followed by skin tears, head injuries, and humeral fractures (exploratory). Conclusions: OH is strongly linked to falls among SNF residents. Serial measurements at 1 and 3 minutes improved detection, supporting routine OH screening in fall risk assessment and proactive interventions (e.g., medication review, activity scheduling, and environmental safety).

Impact Of Information Security Awareness Training On Knowledge, Attitude, And Behavior: A K-12 Case Study, Michael S. Robbins, Christopher Robbins
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Abstract— Information security breaches remain a serious threat across all sectors, often exploiting human factors rather than technical flaws. This study examines how a structured Information Security Awareness (ISA) training program influences employees’ knowledge of security policies, attitudes towards those policies, and self-reported security behaviors within a K-12 educational environment. A quantitative pre-test/post-test design was employed with 201 staff members (administrators, teachers, and support personnel) in a public school district. Participants completed the Human Aspects of Information Security Questionnaire (HAIS-Q) before and after undergoing an interactive cybersecurity training program. Statistical analysis revealed a significant improvement in information security knowledge, attitudes, …
The Pragmatics Of Introductory Discourse In Examples Of Modern Literary Letters
The Pragmatics Of Introductory Discourse In Examples Of Modern Literary Letters
Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities
Introductory discourse illuminates and decodes a text, presenting a revealing picture before details unfold. This study examines the pragmatic dimension in the introductory discourse of modern literary letters (MLLs), focusing on how it reflects the addressee’s circumstances and status. It identifies discourse characteristics, communicative principles, and rhetorical functions, while clarifying its purposes and multiple roles. The findings show that the principles governing MLL introductions help inform theaddressee with precision, account for context, encourage mutual appreciation, and portray the writer with epithets matching their status. The discourse achieves several functions: communicative, fostering dialogue and interaction; critical, highlighting the origins of MLLs; …
Literary Reciprocal Falsehood In Arab Heritage: A Pragmatic Approach, Hamad Abdullah Al-Oufi Dr.
Literary Reciprocal Falsehood In Arab Heritage: A Pragmatic Approach, Hamad Abdullah Al-Oufi Dr.
Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities
This research examines the discourse of literary reciprocal falsehood (referring to situations where each party perceives the other as lying) in the Arab heritage, asking a central question: What are the rhetorical foundations upon which this discourse is built? Using a pragmatic approach, the study aims to identify and analyze these rhetorical foundations, highlight the role of pragmatics in shaping the features of this literary genre, demonstrate the impact of intentionality and authority, and uncover the discourse strategies it employs. The paper discusses the interplay of context, intentionality, and authority in reciprocal falsehood. The findings reveal that this discourse is …

Denial And Attribution Strategies In Saudi Judicial Rulings On Cybercrimes: A Forensic Linguistic Analysis, Bandar Subail Al-Shammari Dr.
Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities
This research examines the linguistic strategies employed by defendants in cybercrime cases within the Saudi judicial system to deny responsibility or shift it elsewhere, based on a sample of documented court rulings issued between 1433 and 1435 AH. The rulings reveal recurring patterns of denial, such as claims of shared use of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses or devices, or reliance on moral, religious, and cultural justifications. The study employs a composite theoretical framework that integrates Speech Act Theory, evidentiality, epistemic modality, and critical discourse analysis. The findings indicate that judges give greater weight to direct technical evidence when it conflicts …

Navigating New Technology: A Phenomenological Study Into Technology Coaches’ Experiences During Ai Expansion In Schools, Elizabeth K. Wrzesinski
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly influencing instructional practices in K–12 education, yet most states have not issued clear, binding policies to guide its integration. As a result, local school systems and support staff must interpret emerging guidance and determine how AI should be used in classrooms. This study examined how system-level technology coaches in the Deep South experience and support AI adoption in contexts where state guidance is advisory rather than mandatory. This qualitative phenomenological study used questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with technology coaches, and a content analysis of AI-related state and local policy guidance. Participants included technology coaches who …

Outcomes Following A Behaviour Change Intervention Within Hospitals To Improve Birth Registrations And Hospital Utilisation For Aboriginal And/Or Torres Strait Islander Infants: A Quasi-Experimental And Cohort Study, K. R. Mcauley, Natalie Ann Strobel, Daniel M. Christensen, Karen Margaret R. Edmond, Peter N. Jacoby, Daniel L. Mcaullay
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Objectives The primary objective was to determine whether a behaviour change intervention delivered to hospital staff would (1) improve the proportion of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander (Aboriginal) babies being registered and (2) reduce hospital admissions and emergency presentations for babies < 6 months old. The secondary objective was an observational analysis to determine factors that might influence the proportion of registered Aboriginal births in Western Australia (WA). Design Quasi-experimental design and cohort study. Setting Five tertiary birthing hospitals in WA. Participants The intervention was delivered to health service providers who were in the five tertiary birthing hospitals. Outcome data were collected on Aboriginal babies born between 1 January 2016 and 30 June 2018 who were delivered within these hospitals. Babies in the control group (n=226) were born 6months before the intervention and intervention babies (n=232) were born 6months following the intervention. For the secondary objective, there were 4573 babies included in the analysis. Interventions A behaviour change intervention delivered to hospital staff in five hospitals. Primary and secondary outcome measures The primary outcomes were the proportion of babies who were registered and whether a baby had been admitted to hospital or an emergency department by 3 and 6 months old. The secondary outcome was to determine factors that might influence the proportion of registered Aboriginal births in WA (cohort study). Results There was evidence of a 38% reduction in emergency presentations within 6months for babies born to hospitals 6months following the staff training (OR 0.62, 95%CI 0.42 to 0.91), and little evidence of improvements in birth registrations, hospital admissions within 3 or 6months of birth or emergency department presentations within 3months of birth. Of the 4573 babies included in the cohort study, 3769 (82.4%) babies had their births registered and 804 (17.6%) babies did not. Factors that were associated with not having a birth registered included low birth weight babies with a 34% decrease in odds of having a registered birth compared with those with a normal birth weight (adjusted OR (aOR) 0.66, 95%CI 0.51 to 0.86). Timing of first antenatal visit was associated with reduced odds of having a birth registered if this occurred in the second (aOR 0.77, 95%CI 0.64 to 0.93) or third trimester (aOR 0.59, 95%CI 0.45 to 0.77) compared with the first trimester. Conclusions Our study identifies the complexities surrounding birth registrations and improved hospital utilisation for Aboriginal babies, the importance of targeted interventions and ongoing efforts needed to address this issue comprehensively.

Perceived Neighborhood Cohesion And Well-Being During The Covid-19 Pandemic In The U.S., Jennifer W. Robinette, Brooke Jenkins, Nicole-Marie Duran, David A. Frederick
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
The U.S. entered a “second pandemic” characterized by depression and loneliness after the initial outbreak of COVID-19. These psychological consequences have driven researchers to identify protective factors during this crisis. The present study tested whether perceived neighborhood cohesion, or that neighbors trust and count on one another, related to fewer depressive symptoms and less loneliness as the pandemic unfolded. Two waves of data were collected online from the same adults in April and October, 2020 (N = 1,928). People who reported greater neighborhood cohesion had fewer depressive symptoms (b = −1.01, p < 0.001) and were less lonely (b = −0.20, p < 0.001), even when considering other pandemic-related risk factors. The association between cohesion and loneliness was even stronger 6 months into the pandemic (b = …

Genetic Influences For Distinct Impulsivity Domains Are Differentially Associated With Early Substance Use Initiation: Results From The Abcd Study, Ethan Kinstler, Aaron J Gorelik, Sarah E Paul, Adamya Aggarwal, Emma C Johnson, Melissa A Cyders, Arpana Agrawal, Ryan Bogdan, Alex P Miller
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is among the strongest correlates of substance involvement (i.e. a broad continuum of substance-related behaviors), and distinct domains (e.g. sensation seeking [SS] and urgency) are differentially correlated, phenotypically and genetically, with unique substance involvement stages. Examining whether polygenic influences for distinct impulsivity domains are differentially predictive of early substance use initiation - a major risk factor for later problematic use - may improve our understanding of the role of impulsivity in addiction etiology.
METHODS: Data collected from participants of genetically inferred European ancestry enrolled in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study
RESULTS: SS-PGS was significantly associated with any …

The Big Bang Theory’S Blurred (Tele)Vision Of Scientific Ethics: Some Thoughts For Educators Who Want To Change The Channel, Lee-Anne Broadhead, Sean J. Howard
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
This article investigates the way the popular American television program The Big Bang Theory represents the pursuit of scientific knowledge and reflects on the cultural and educational implications of the show’s contradictory problematization and valorization of the reductionist method at the core of modern Eurocentric science. Drawing on story-lines relating to military research, animal experimentation, and pharmaceutical drug trials, we consider the show’s precarious balance of implicit critique (the consistent exposé of systematically violent, often unethical research) and overt celebration (the presentation of science as “cool,” and its practitioners as flawed but endearing). This tension, we argue, enhances the show’s …
