Book Review: Ecologies Of Inequity. How Disaster Response Reconstitutes Race And Class Inequality, Abel Traslaviña-Arias
Book Review: Ecologies Of Inequity. How Disaster Response Reconstitutes Race And Class Inequality, Abel Traslaviña-Arias
Critical Disaster Studies
In Ecologies of Inequity: How Disaster Response Reconstitutes Race and Class Inequality, Sancha Doxilly Medwinter gathered diverse stories about how various migrant communities had to overcome not only disaster but also the overlapping networks established by those who were supposed to support them in 2012 in New York City. Medwinter portrays this contested post-disaster landscape through a thorough data recording of 120 individuals affiliated with various groups: racialized migrants or locals, tenants or property owners, local or external helpers, and those from wealthy or impoverished backgrounds. Ecologies of Inequity refer to the spatialized networks of organizational and interpersonal relations …

Evaluating Kansai Airport's Ppp: Grounded Ambitions, Concession Of Financial, Geotechnical, And Climate Risk, Edmund Cho, Dimitrios V. Siskos
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
This study critically examines the Kansai Airports Group’s 44-year Public-Private Partnership (PPP) monopoly-type concession encompassing Kansai International (KIX), Osaka Itami (ITM), and Kobe (UKB) airports. The research uses financial analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, and NPV-at-risk modeling to evaluate how Japan’s fixed-term private monopoly model allocates financial, operational, and environmental risks. In 2015, there were significant developments in the promotion of the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) Act. It was revised in 2015; as a result, it finds that the underestimated long-term maintenance liabilities, especially Kansai airport (KIX) foundation subsidence, and lacked flexibility to manage exogenous shocks like COVID-19 and Typhoon Jebi. …
Rogue Access Points And Their Impact On Networks, Sami Belmokhtar
Rogue Access Points And Their Impact On Networks, Sami Belmokhtar
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
This paper focuses on rogue access points (rogue APs) and how they can impact the security and stability of a network, and consequently, the safety and privacy of the users. Wireless access points (WAPs) are nodes that allow a user to connect to a local network. This includes devices such as the routers typically used in a home network. This paper examines how an unauthorized WAP may pose a threat to a network in both a public environment and an enterprise environment. Furthermore, it shows how a hacker can mimic a real wireless network and gain access to both user …
A Transition Framework For Hybrid Tls In Enterprise-Level Systems, William Hadd
A Transition Framework For Hybrid Tls In Enterprise-Level Systems, William Hadd
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
Enterprises face an immediate need to protect long-lived data against harvest-now, decrypt-later threats while maintaining interoperability across layered systems. With NIST’s first post-quantum standards finalized (ML-KEM, ML-DSA, SLH-DSA) and TLS hybridization drafts defining concrete ECDHE + ML-KEM groups, adoption can begin at the TLS termination layer even before full ecosystem support for post-quantum signatures arrives (NIST, 2024; IETF, 2025). In this paper, we propose an enterprise-oriented transition framework and maturity model for hybrid TLS across email, internal API gateways, and object storage. We specify where to enforce, which hybrid groups to select, and how to prevent silent downgrade with policy …

The Legal And Ethical Impacts Of Cybersecurity Practices On Privacy And Digital Rights, Ibrahim Fejzulla
Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) are meant to secure our data, but sometimes it feels as if organizations don’t do enough to secure and protect our data and privacy. Even some of the things organizations may do to improve security may sound counterintuitive like hiring ethical hackers or penetration testers. This research looks at the effects both, the GDPR and HIPAA, have had on cybersecurity practices and policies of organizations. This paper aims to analyze the effects of both the GDPR and HIPAA, answer whether ethical hacking is justified, analyze …

On The Periodic Solution For A Class Of Perturbed A Hyper Jerk Memristive System, Niazy Hady Hussein, Hemin Qassim Rahman
On The Periodic Solution For A Class Of Perturbed A Hyper Jerk Memristive System, Niazy Hady Hussein, Hemin Qassim Rahman
Sultan Qaboos University Journal For Science
Nonlinear dynamical systems with hidden attractors represent a recent and highly active area of research. In this work, the following novel class of four dimensional dynamical memristive vector field is considered []. χ=y∂/∂x+z∂/∂y+w∂/∂z-(z+(1+x)y+a1w+a2z2w)∂/∂w. Such a vector field exhibits a line of equilibrium points Ex(x,0,0,0) passing through the origin. In a specific region within the parameter space, this system displays hyper-jerk dynamics, resembling a dynamical system with concealed attractors. The behavior of the proposed vector field is analyzed by identifying periodic solutions. First, an explicit condition is determined to ensure that the origin, which is a non-isolated singular point has a …

Digital Marketing Strategies To Meet Digital Consumers’ Behavior In The New Era: Challenges, Path, And Interventions To Navigate The Technological And Social Turbulence, Dario Natale Palmucci, Christian Di Prima, Vittoria Magrelli
Economic and Business Review
This paper examines how digital marketing is being reshaped by five interrelated tensions: balancing data privacy and personalization; navigating global–local dynamics (including cultural sensitivities and country-of-origin effects); integrating artificial intelligence without losing human connection; ensuring authentic communication to mitigate reputational risks linked to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) and ethical storytelling; and responding to shifting consumer preferences, particularly among younger generations. We combine a targeted literature review with semistructured interviews of marketing professionals across industries and seniority levels. Findings portray marketers as “tightrope walkers” who negotiate paradoxes that redefine the function. We propose an integrated framework that synthesizes previously fragmented …

Are Loyalty Programmes Still “A Thing” In High-Fashion Retail? Understanding Generation Z’S Perspective, Živa Kolbl, Lori Šušulić
Economic and Business Review
This study investigates the relevance and perception of loyalty programmes (LPs) among Generation Z (Gen Z) consumers in the high-fashion retail sector. While LPs are well-established tools for fostering customer retention, their effectiveness among Gen Z, a cohort characterized by digital fluency, a preference for authenticity, and distinct consumption values, remains underexplored. Given the high-fashion context, where exclusivity and identity are critical, this study examines the extent to which LPs resonate with this generation. Utilizing a qualitative methodology and with the help of thematic analysis, we reveal four key dimensions: drivers of high-fashion consumption, shopping preferences, customer loyalty patterns, and …

Shock Transmission In Granular Economies: Impact Of Pass-Through Effects Of Idiosyncratic Microshocks To The Aggregate, Anamarija Cijan, Jože P. Damijan, Črt Kostevc
Economic and Business Review
This paper studies the importance of shocks to the largest firms on the aggregate output. Using firm-level data on eight European countries (2006--2019), we find that shocks to the largest firms explain an important part of aggregate fluctuations. Our paper brings several novelties. Firstly, in addition to the aggregate level, we extend the analysis of the transmission of firm-level shocks to study the shocks at the sectoral level. Secondly, we provide a novel measurement for demand-side shocks within granularity. We show that idiosyncratic shocks affecting the largest 20 firms can explain almost half of the output volatility, which is consistent …

The Impact Of Cumulative Career Experience Of Internal Control Managers On Firms' Efficiency In Different Information Environments, Inkyung Yoon, Hansol Lee, Dongjoon Choi
Economic and Business Review
This study investigates the effect of internal control (IC) managers' cumulative career experience on the operational efficiency of Korean listed firms between 2018 and 2020. Building on the premise that managers with extensive experience positively influence ICs and the internal information environment, this study hypothesises that cumulative career experience of an IC manager is also positively associated with a firm's operational efficiency. To empirically assess efficiency, this study applies data envelopment analysis (DEA), a nonparametric technique that evaluates relative efficiency based on multiple input and output measures. The results suggest that IC managers with greater cumulative experience significantly enhance a …

“She’S A Good Different. She’S Revolutionary”: How Fifth-Grade Readers Interpret Aspects Of Diversity In Literature, Margaret Barr
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Although diversity, equity, and inclusion have been a significant focus of research in children’s literature, many studies fail to consider the reader’s perspective and instead rely on text analyses. In the present study, the author employed focus groups to examine fifth-grade readers’ insights as they interpreted, related to, and engaged with the presence of diversity in texts. Findings indicate that readers interpreted diversity by envisioning the larger picture, recognizing the importance of others’ differences, and connecting through emotions. Thus, this study suggests that it is necessary for teachers to understand that students recognize and appreciate individual differences, to select texts …

Fully Integrated Slippage Detection System For Lower Limb Amputees, Christopher E. Miglio
Fully Integrated Slippage Detection System For Lower Limb Amputees, Christopher E. Miglio
Master's Theses
Lower limb amputees face significant challenges in maintaining a proper prosthetic fit, as improper fit can lead to slippage at the limb-socket interface, resulting in discomfort, pressure sores, and long-term musculoskeletal complications. To address this issue, a fully integrated slippage detection system was developed to monitor an amputee’s daily activities and slippage occurrences to understand their prosthetic fit over time. The system consists of a prosthetic sock embedded with Interlink 406 flexible piezoresistive force-sensing resistors (FSRs). The sock, worn directly on the residual limb, continuously measures pressure at the limb-socket interface. Sensor data from six FSRs is sampled at approximately …

Applicability Of Syntropic Agriculture To A Semi-Arid Continental Climate: Alentejo To New Mexico, Arielle Nathan, Joana Dionisio Msc, João Serra, Joseph Lanning, Cátia Magro Dr.
Journal of Critical Global Issues
Conventional industrial agriculture has detrimental effects on the environment including pollution and overconsumption of water, soil degradation, and biodiversity reduction. An environmentally sustainable future of food production requires alternative methods that limit negative environmental consequences. Syntropic Agriculture (SA) is a promising farming alternative especially for arid systems at risk of desertification. New Mexico, USA, is a semi-arid continental climate in a prolonged period of drought and predicted to experience worsening agricultural conditions including desertification, wildfire intensification, and exacerbated water scarcity. The Alentejo region of Portugal has a Mediterranean climate with similar agricultural challenges. The agroecological transition project, Terra Sintrópica, located …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This mixed-methods study sought to extend what is known about preservice teachers’ (PSTs’) preparation for teaching writing by examining their responding to individual children’s narrative, informative, and persuasive writing at the start and end of a writing methods course. Participants were 115 elementary PSTs. Their selections of teaching foci and instructional strategies on a beginningand end-of-semester course task were examined. Overall, PSTs showcased differences in their selections at the two time points, displaying a lessened focus on local features (e.g., spelling, punctuation) and reliance on laypeople’s helping practices (e.g., telling, correcting writing) and a greater focus on global features (e.g., …

Beyond The Red Pen: Investigating The Formation Of Reader And Writer Identity Development In Preservice Teachers, Sarah Rutt Williams, Pengtong Qu, Lydia Denning
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The influence of identifying as a reader and writer in being a literacy teacher has been emphasized in the literature (Graves, 1983). However, few studies have explored how teacher education programs develop these identities in preservice teachers (PSTs). Grounded in Demerath’s (2006) epistemological identity theory, this study explored the fluid process of teacher identity formation, focusing on nurturing PSTs’ identities as readers and writers. The study took place over one semester in an English Education course. The researchers analyzed three PST participants’ weekly reflections about their beliefs regarding teaching and learning literacy. These statements revolved around topics that aligned with …
