Breaking The Silence: Addressing The Crisis Of Osec & The Knowledge Gap Among Health Professionals, Toni Morris, Elizabeth Ziff Dec 2025

Breaking The Silence: Addressing The Crisis Of Osec & The Knowledge Gap Among Health Professionals, Toni Morris, Elizabeth Ziff

Biennial Convention (CONV)

OSEC is a significant public health crisis globally. It involves the sexual abuse of minors through the internet, including creating, sharing, or possessing sexual material featuring children. OSEC is widespread yet often hidden due to its sensitive nature, making it challenging to address openly. The increasing use of digital technology and social media exacerbates this problem, providing predators with more tools to exploit children.

Children are especially vulnerable, facing serious threats to their physical and emotional well-being. Despite global efforts to combat OSEC, the ubiquity of the internet and advancements in technology have made prevention and intervention difficult. Early identification …

Culturally Diverse End-Of-Life Simulation And Perceptions In Undergraduate Nursing Students, Jodi Kay Olson, Mary Pesch, Julie Keller-Dornbusch Dec 2025

Culturally Diverse End-Of-Life Simulation And Perceptions In Undergraduate Nursing Students, Jodi Kay Olson, Mary Pesch, Julie Keller-Dornbusch

Biennial Convention (CONV)

End-of-life (EOL) patient care is a challenging reality that nearly all nurses will face during their careers. Preparing nursing students for these situations can alleviate anxieties related to patient death (Venkatasalu et al., 2015). Simulation-based learning is an effective approach for teaching complex scenarios like EOL care (Cannity et al., 2021), with numerous studies highlighting improved confidence and competence in students who participate in EOL simulations (Gillan et al., 2014; Tamaki et al., 2019; Venkatasalu et al., 2015; Lewis et al., 2016; Jablonski et al., 2020). However, the lack of cross-cultural variations in death and dying highlights the need for …

Investigating The Mechanisms By Which Gut Microbiome Dysbiosis Contributes To The Autoimmune Response In Multiple Sclerosis, Abigail Houtrouw

Honors Theses

This literature review explores the multifaceted relationship between gut microbiome (GM) dysbiosis and multiple sclerosis (MS), highlighting key themes that advance understanding of disease pathogenesis and therapeutic potential for treatments targeting the gut. The review underscores the immune system dysregulation in MS, emphasizing the roles of T cells, B cells, and microglia in neuroinflammation and demyelination. Historically, MS pathogenesis was thought to be driven mainly by T-cell dysregulation, but current research highlights the additional roles of B-cells and microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS). Additionally, this literature review identifies GM alterations and dysbiosis as critical …

Confidential, Attestable, And Efficient Inter-Cvm Communication With Arm Cca, Sina Abdollahi, Amir Al Sadi, Marios Kogias, Hamed Haddadi, David Kotz

Other Faculty Materials

Confidential Virtual Machines (CVMs) are increasingly adopted to protect sensitive workloads from privileged adversaries such as the hypervisor. While they provide strong isolation guarantees, existing CVM architectures lack first-class mechanisms for inter-CVM data sharing due to their disjoint memory model, making inter-CVM data exchange a performance bottleneck in compartmentalized or collaborative multi-CVM systems. Under this model, a CVM's accessible memory is either shared with the hypervisor or protected from both the hypervisor and all other CVMs. This design simplifies reasoning about memory ownership; however, it fundamentally precludes plaintext data sharing between CVMs because all inter-CVM communication must pass through hypervisor-accessible …

We analyze 10,986 participants (mean age 77; 63% women; 54% non-White) across seven U.S. cohorts to study the relationship between mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) heteroplasmy and nuclear DNA methylation. We identify 597 CpGs associated with heteroplasmy burden, generally showing lower methylation. These CpGs are enriched in dynamically regulated island shores and depleted in CpG islands, indicating involvement in context-specific rather than constitutive gene regulation. In HEK293T cells, we introduce a truncating mtDNA mutation (MT-COX3, mt.9979) and observe a positive correlation between variant allele fraction and methylation at cg04569152, supporting a direct mtDNA-nDNA epigenetic link. Many heteroplasmy-associated CpGs overlap with known methylation-trait …

Bridging Modalities: Enhancing Multimodal Sentiment Analysis For Social Media Networks, Misbah Ul Hoque

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) serve as rich sources of textual and visual information, making multimodal sentiment analysis essential for understanding complex human emotions. This dissertation aims to advance multimodal sentiment analysis by improving the semantic alignment and fusion of textual and visual features, thereby enabling more accurate and context-aware sentiment interpretation of social media content.

To address challenges in multimodal integration, this work proposes two complementary MSA approaches. The first approach introduces a similarity-based multi-layer attention neural network (SiMANN) that enhances modality integration through cosine-based similarity fusion and modality-specific attention to emphasize salient features in text and …

A Double-Edged Sword: Ethical And Psychological Implications Of Apoe Genotype Disclosure Across The Lifespan, Diego Iacono Dec 2025

A Double-Edged Sword: Ethical And Psychological Implications Of Apoe Genotype Disclosure Across The Lifespan, Diego Iacono

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

The apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene is the strongest genetic risk factor for sporadic Alzheimer’s disease (AD), with the ε4 allele increasing risk and decreasing the average age of onset. While APOE genotyping is primarily used in research or clinical settings for patients with memory concerns, interest in disclosing APOE status to asymptomatic individuals—particularly during early adulthood—is growing. This trend is fueled by the rise of direct-to-consumer genetic testing and emerging prevention-focused clinical trials. However, ethical debates remain unresolved about the potential harms of early disclosure, including anxiety, stigma, and misunderstanding of probabilistic risk. Conversely, some argue that knowledge of APOE …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Studies have implicated perturbations in the postnatal development of the gut microbiome as a contributing factor to childhood undernutrition. Compared to a standard ready-to-use supplementary food, a microbiome-directed complementary food (MDCF-2) designed to repair these perturbations produced superior improvements in ponderal and linear growth in clinical trials of Bangladeshi children with moderate acute malnutrition. Here, "reverse translation" experiments are performed where intact fecal microbiomes collected from trial participants before and at the end of treatment are introduced into female gnotobiotic mice just after delivery of their pups. Pups received diets designed to resemble those consumed by children in the trials …

Protests, Epistemic Injustice, And The Movement For Black Lives, Sofia De Ferrari Dec 2025

Protests, Epistemic Injustice, And The Movement For Black Lives, Sofia De Ferrari

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

Epistemic injustice provides a powerful perspective for understanding media narratives of the Movement for Black Lives (#BlackLivesMatter). To understand the media coverage, I draw on Foucauldian theories and critical race theory, as well as accounts of hermeneutical and recognition injustice, which show how “truth” emerges as a product of knowledge/power/resistance. Special attention is given to the question of violence: what is violent and what isn’t? Who gets to decide? What are the consequences? Media narratives favor the status quo and delegitimize social movements which challenge it. This is achieved by prioritizing the voices of officials and law enforcement in coverage …
