Modeling The Dynamic Agency In Human-Ai Collaboration, Shyhnan Liou, Chi-Yue Chiu, Ingri P. Hernandez Sibo, Yu-Chen Chen, I Jen Wang, Shin-Bou Lin, Shu-Ting Ai, Chi-Yi Chang
IASDR Conference Series
This paper presents a novel theoretical model conceptualizing the Sense of Agency (SoA) as foundational to ethical and effective human-AI collaboration. Moving beyond instrumentalist views of AI, we frame human-AI interaction as a dynamic, dyadic process wherein both humans and AI systems continuously assess, interpret, and adapt to perceptions of their own agency and that of their partner in real time. Grounded in philosophy of mind (intentional agency), psychological principles (Self- Determination Theory (SDT), equi finality), and systems engineering, our model introduces a quadripartite agency framework: the human’s first-person SoA, the human’s perception of AI agency, the AI’s computational self-agency, …

Design Exploration Of Lightweight Interactions For Awareness-Supporting Technologies In Hybrid Work, Lu Liu, Harm Van Essen, Berry Eggen
IASDR Conference Series
Hybrid work settings often lack the informal communication that naturally emerges from spontaneous encounters and ambient awareness of coworkers' activities, potentially hindering team collaboration. To address this challenge, we explored how lightweight interactions can be integrated into awareness- supporting technologies for fostering informal communication. Our experiential design approach focused on how information is perceived and processed rather than explicit content exchange. Through brainstorming, speculating, and prototyping, we explored the design space for small hybrid teams. By annotating and analyzing design concepts, speculative scenarios, and prototypes, we developed a framework that identified design options for lightweight interactions and methods for integrating …

In response to the growing sense of distrust in mainstream food systems, Alternative Food Networks have gained traction by prioritizing ecological, ethical, and participatory principles. One such alternative initiative is the ‘fair food’ ecosystem developed by the urban hub Postane Istanbul, which this study explores as a case. Postane brings together food-related practices, infrastructures, and actors around the idea of fair food. The study focuses on how fair food can act as a boundary object that mediates between diverse actors, values, and practices. Data were collected through site visits, document analysis, and long-term participant observation, offering insights into Postane’s fair …
Internal Facial Contour (Ifc): An Exploration Of Expressive Communication Approaches For The Design Of Face-Worn Wearables, Mingshuo Li, Rowan Page, Chuan Khoo
Internal Facial Contour (Ifc): An Exploration Of Expressive Communication Approaches For The Design Of Face-Worn Wearables, Mingshuo Li, Rowan Page, Chuan Khoo
IASDR Conference Series
Facial movement delivers rich emotional messages. This pictorial explores a novel concept in enhancing expressive facial communication – the Internal Facial Contour (IFC). The IFC device constructs a linear visual language on the face through a collection of face-worn wearables. These wearable augmentations deform in response to facial muscle movement, thereby suggesting emotional states. The shape of the IFC device naturally becomes visually wider and more open when smiling; in contrast, it becomes narrower and more closed when frowning. To test the acceptance of this communication language, feedback was collected through casual interviews, visual perception tests, and usage observations. The …

Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have led to a rapid increase in the use of AI- enabled tools to curate content across various application contexts (e.g., news, social media, search engines, product reviews). This content can include multiple data sources and formats. Some commercially available AI-enabled content curation integrations seem useful, while others are underdeveloped, or not considered in terms of utility, contextual relevance, or user experience. We present an annotated portfolio of nine discrete interface design patterns, exploring how an AI-in-the- loop approach can be used to present con textually relevant, AI curated content — across varying degrees …
Reconstruction Of Architectural Objects Through Ai-Informed Generation And Additive Manufacturing, Karin Hedlund
Reconstruction Of Architectural Objects Through Ai-Informed Generation And Additive Manufacturing, Karin Hedlund
IASDR Conference Series
Discards from construction and demolition account for a third of all waste in the EU. Architectural objects with visual flaws and low cultural value often become waste before reaching reuse stations. In contrast, broken heritage objects are often restored or reconstructed and, in this process, digital methods such as photogrammetry, custom generative adversarial networks (GANs) and 3D printing show promise. Hence, architectural discards are rarely reconstructed, and when they are, design potential is often overlooked. This research explores an alternative method for digitally and physically reconstructing broken architectural elements, focusing on artistic reinterpretation rather than historical accuracy. A “broken brick” …

Synthetic Realities: Evaluating Human Ability To Distinguish Ai-Generated Videos From Real Footage, Danyal Sarfraz, Raja Mubashar Karim, Kwanmyung Kim
IASDR Conference Series
Recent advances in generative AI have enabled multiple pathways for high‑fidelity video synthesis; text‑to‑video, image‑to‑video animation, and video out painting. Empirical side-by-side evaluations of how untrained viewers perceive and distinguish these outputs from real footage remain scarce. In this study, we systematically compare human detection accuracy across these three AI generation techniques within three thematic contexts: historical footage, film and media content, and natural environments. We constructed a balanced stimulus set comprising equal amounts of real and AI- generated videos (18 each). The AI clips were evenly distributed across the three generation methods using Google’s Veo 3, Lightricks LTX Video, …

Sensus Pond: Exploring Water As Sensing Medium For More-Than-Human Observation, Kuan-Ju Wu, Youyang Hu, Chiaochi Chou, Yasuaki Kakehi
IASDR Conference Series
We introduce Sensus Pond, an interactive system that reconfigures water not merely as a static natural element but as an active sensing medium for registering more-than-human traces. In response to the limitations of anthropocentric approaches in interaction design, we propose a methodological framework of observation without translation—resisting the tendency to stabilize, decode, or humanize nonhuman presence. Drawing from critical theories of more-than-human design and ecological entanglement, Sensus Pond is a materially embedded and site-specific system that employs Swept Frequency Capacitive Sensing (SFCS) and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to detect ephemeral interactions between the pond’s surface and surrounding life forms. …

Design Futuring For Menstrual Pain Technologies Through A Participatory Workshop, Muxuan Tang, Mai Kagawa, Yasuaki Kakehi
IASDR Conference Series
Menstrual pain affects a significant proportion of individuals worldwide, yet it has long been stigmatized and remains under explored in both design research and industry. Existing technologies primarily focus on symptom tracking or pain relief, overlooking the complex, temporal, and embodied nature of menstrual pain while perpetuating narrow narratives. To challenge these limitations, we conducted a participatory workshop to explore speculative futures of menstrual pain care. Using approaches like body maps, scenario-building, and design fiction, participants shared their lived experiences, critiqued existing technologies, and envisioned future scenarios rooted in empathy, inclusivity, and ethics. In this pictorial, we presented the workshop …
