Not Quite Foreign, Never Fully Belonging: Racialization Of Southbound Policy Students In Taiwan, Garima Jha
Not Quite Foreign, Never Fully Belonging: Racialization Of Southbound Policy Students In Taiwan, Garima Jha
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
This paper critically examines how race and racialization shape the socio-cultural adjustment experiences of international students from New Southbound policy (NSP) countries in Taiwan. Drawing from a qualitative part conducted for my master’s thesis, which explored the coping strategies and adjustment processes of seven students from Southeast and South Asia through semi-structured interview, I reframe the data to center race as an analytical lens using the conceptual framework proposed by Glasgow (2009) which explains that racialization as the process through which social meanings are attached to perceived cultural or bodily differences, creating and maintaining hierarchies among groups. and Brondolo et …
Transnational Racialization: An Exploratory Case Study Of Asian International Students In U.S. Higher Education, Jia Zheng, Kristyn Lue
Transnational Racialization: An Exploratory Case Study Of Asian International Students In U.S. Higher Education, Jia Zheng, Kristyn Lue
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
This exploratory case study examines the transnational racialization experiences of 14 ethnically diverse Asian International Students (AIS) studying abroad in the U.S. Using International Student Critical Race Theory to foreground the contexts of participants’ home countries, we ask: What are AIS’s experiences with transnational racialization? Findings suggest that AIS are socialized to the racial dynamics of the U.S. through: (1) the different contexts of their home countries, (2) their specific social positioning within these contexts, (3) the influence of Western narratives across the globe, and (4) their academic communities in the U.S. Our findings advance theoretical perspectives on racialization in …

Inclusions And Illusions: Transnational Matrix Of Subordination & The (In)Visible Hierarchies Among Racialized International Students In Ontario Universities, Shamiga S. Arumuhathas
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
This study critically examines the (in)visible racial hierarchies experienced by racialized international students (IS) within Ontario’s (HE) education landscape amid populist, anti-immigration backlash and expanding internationalization. Guided by Critical Race Theory (CRT) and intersectionality, this research employed narrative inquiry with 14 self-identified racialized IS at 2 public universities. Core research questions include: How do racialized IS experience belonging, racism, and institutional EDID (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Decolonization) in present-day Ontario? How do EDID and internationalization policies obscure or reinforce racial hierarchies? Findings reveal a transnational matrix of subordination: White IS remain proxies for institutional belonging, while racialized and domestic students act …
Decolonizing Raciolinguistic Ideologies In Institutions Of Higher Learning, Chantelle M. August-Mowers, Samantha M. Hoffman
Decolonizing Raciolinguistic Ideologies In Institutions Of Higher Learning, Chantelle M. August-Mowers, Samantha M. Hoffman
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
This article examines how raciolinguistic ideologies shape global higher education (HE), highlighting the intersection of language, race, and systemic inequalities. English often functions as a gatekeeper, privileging certain knowledge systems while marginalizing students and faculty from the Global South (Flores & Rosa, 2015; Pennycook, 2007). Structural inequities persist in faculty recruitment, international student selection, and academic publishing, reflecting colonial legacies and epistemic injustice (Canagarajah, 2013; Quijano, 2000). Racialized and linguistically marginalized students experience exclusion, microaggressions, and limited mobility, revealing contradictions between diversity rhetoric and institutional practices (Sekaja, 2022; Enslin, 2024). The study advocates decolonial and multilingual interventions, including translanguaging, inclusive …
Race, Racism, And Racialization In International Higher Education: A Transnational And Mobility-Aware Approach, Benjamin Denga, Louise Michelle Vital
Race, Racism, And Racialization In International Higher Education: A Transnational And Mobility-Aware Approach, Benjamin Denga, Louise Michelle Vital
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
Race, racism, and racialization are increasingly recognized as central to understanding inequality in global higher education. Yet dominant frameworks in comparative and international higher education remain nationally bounded and citizenship-centered, offering limited insight into how race operates under conditions of mobility, legal temporariness, and transnational governance. As internationalization intensifies through student mobility, cross-border partnerships, and global knowledge circulation, racialized experiences are shaped by visa-dependent status, differential protection, global racial imaginaries and discourses, uneven or unequal geopolitical relations and institutional logics of internationalization (including marketization, risk management and revenue extraction). In this conceptual article we argue that race and racialization in …

Using the Swiss Cheese Model, the study will capture layered failures across operational, environmental, and maintenance domains. …
Low-Complexity Polynomial Ring Learning For Quantum Space Assets, Lola Torres
Low-Complexity Polynomial Ring Learning For Quantum Space Assets, Lola Torres
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Secure communication for space-based systems requires cryptographic methods that remain both reliable and efficient under strict computational constraints. This work investigates a low-complexity polynomial ring learning algorithm designed for quantum space assets, including satellite–ground communication systems. The project focuses on post-quantum cryptographic principles, where encryption and decryption rely heavily on repeated polynomial operations; this can be computationally expensive with constrained platforms. This is addressed with reformulating polynomial multiplication as a structured linear transformation on coefficient vectors. By representing these operations as matrices with a cyclic structure, the structure allows the use of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT); this will simplify …

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Study of Atmospheric Effects and Mitigation Strategies in Free-Space Optical Communication Systems examines the fundamental limitations imposed by atmospheric disturbances on point-to-point laser communication links and evaluates methods to improve link reliability and performance. Free-space optical communication offers high data rates and reduced spectral congestion compared to radiofrequency systems, but its effectiveness is constrained by atmospheric effects including turbulence-induced scintillation, beam wander, absorption, and scattering. These phenomena introduce fluctuations in signal intensity and pointing errors, leading to degraded link stability and increased bit error rates. The work analyzes these atmospheric effects and investigates mitigation strategies that enhance optical link robustness …

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Amphibious emergency support operations involve rapidly changing information, high stress, and significant cognitive demands, which can make decision-making and situation awareness more difficult for operators. When interfaces are poorly designed, they can contribute to issues such as alarm flooding, confusion from incomplete information, and delayed responses, all of which increase operational risk during time-critical disaster situations. This study explores whether using generative AI to assist with interface design will improve performance (output quality and effort) and usability compared to a manual sketch mock-up. Participants were asked to design a dashboard interface to support disaster relief operations following a Category 5 …

Powder Metal Characterization For Additive Manufacturing, Paul Mort, Donovan Stumpf, Rajeshree Varma, Dina Khattab, Xiaoling Shen, Michael Titus, Michael Sealy, Jeff Jaworek, Jake Kim, Langdon Feltner
MMRL-XMO Industrial Seminar
Powder characterization is important for specification and qualification of powder feedstock materials used in powder-bed additive manufacturing. Characteristics include both distributed properties (i.e., particle morphology, size, shape, curvature distributions) as well as ensemble behavior including flow, spread-ability, and packing. Ensemble behavior is highly sensitive to boundary conditions in thin-layer processing, for example as required for additive manufacturing, thin-layer calendaring for dry-cathode processing, and many tribology-related applications. Particulate flow and packing are inherently multi-body ensemble processes; the distributed characteristics of particulates comprise said multi-body effects. Characterization of powder feedstock is important for manufacturing process control, resource efficiency, and product quality. This …
Generative Ai For Decision Making In The Manufacturing Systems, Xingyu Li
Generative Ai For Decision Making In The Manufacturing Systems, Xingyu Li
MMRL-XMO Industrial Seminar
Manufacturing systems increasingly demand real-time, multi-objective, and human-aligned decision-making that existing approaches cannot provide. In this study, we introduce the Generative Manufacturing System (GMS), a paradigm that reframes manufacturing decisions as samples from a learned conditional distribution, replacing inference-time search in the existing optimization-based approaches. Two instantiation examples are presented in manufacturing decision-making, including layout design and production scheduling, using domain-adapted diffusion models conditioned on operational constraints and human preferences. Experiments demonstrate 100% feasibility, near-zero objective matching error, and 25x decision making speed gain, establishing generative AI as a scalable, efficient, and human-centric decision-making engine for modern manufacturing systems.

A Generalized Real-Time Geometric Virtualization Of Material Removal Processes For A Factory Digital Twin Platform, Jongwoo Han, Chang Hyeon Mun, Martin Byung-Guk Jun, Hyung Wook Park
MMRL-XMO Industrial Seminar
As the transition toward autonomous smart factories and Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) accelerates, real-time digital twin implementation of manufacturing processes has emerged as a critical enabling technology. However, existing virtualization approaches present fundamental limitations: mesh-based Boolean methods are computationally infeasible for real-time processing due to their CPU-bound operations, while pure voxel-based methods suffer from staircase artifacts at geometric boundaries and exhibit exponentially increasing computational demands as resolution improves. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a GPU-accelerated real-time geometric virtualization method combining Signed Distance Field (SDF) with the Marching Cubes algorithm. The proposed method executes massively parallel SDF subtractive operations …

Programmable Hybrid And Gradient Constant Mean Curvatures For High-Performance Multifunctional Mechanical Metamaterials, Ajith Annavajhula, Gary J. Cheng
MMRL-XMO Industrial Seminar
Architected solids that combine high stiffness, strength, toughness, and ductility in one geometry are difficult to manufacture without specialised feedstocks or sequential consolidation. Two complementary architectures are built here from a single curvature-programmed building-block library of four constant-mean-curvature (CMC) shell topologies — Schwarz Primitive (SP), Schwarz Diamond (SD), Schoen's I-WP, and FRD — that share commensurate cubic facets and admit C0 /C1 /C2 continuity at every interface. Multi-objective hybridisation gives an open-cell metamaterial with specific axial stiffness E*/ρ* = 63.6 GPa·cm3 ·g-1 and specific peak compressive stress σpeak/ρ* = 416.9 MPa·cm3 ·g-1, exceeding the I-WP single family by 40% in …

This paper presents an automated workflow for constructing an immersive digital twin by combining multimodal field sensing, ground-based CAD-to-point-cloud registration, and physics engine-based scene generation. To reduce human intervention during digital twin construction, the proposed pipeline estimates machine poses by registering CAD-derived point clouds to a colorized point cloud map. Instead of relying on unconstrained six-degree-of-freedom point cloud registration algorithms, such as Iterative Closest Point (ICP) or TEASER++, the proposed method detects the ground plane, reduces the search space to planar translation and yaw, and applies coarse-to-fine slicing followed by 3-DoF planar ICP refinement. The method was evaluated using two …

As human-robot collaboration becomes increasingly prevalent in modern industrial automation, optimizing mobile robot navigation to align with human spatial preferences is essential for efficient workflows. Conventional spatial tracking modalities, such as vision, LiDAR, and Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs), face several limitations in factory environments due to visual occlusion, variable lighting, and accumulated signal drift. To overcome these environmental interferences, this paper proposes a scalable and versatile human footprint acquisition module based on a Force Sensitive Resistor (FSR) sensor array. This presented architecture utilizes a modular grid of FSR sensors integrated with embedded Microcontroller Units (MCUs) and Data Acquisition (DAQ) modules, …
