Objective: Medical students frequently attend lectures without prior review of the related literature when preparing for examinations. It raises the question of whether studying the material in advance could enhance their learning outcomes during lectures. Methods: A total of 102 medical students from a Saudi Arabian university took part in this research. Participants were assigned to one of 2 cohorts: one read a 4-page passage before a 15-minute lecture, while the other attended the lecture before reading the passage. Knowledge acquisition was measured using a test that assessed their ability to recall concepts administered 3 times—prior to the session, post …

De-Skilling Or Re-Skilling? The Case For Smarter Writing Assignments, John Lande
De-Skilling Or Re-Skilling? The Case For Smarter Writing Assignments, John Lande
Faculty Publications
This article challenges the assumption that AI inevitably leads to the de-skilling of law students. Some faculty understandably fear that students will use AI to bypass critical thinking and avoid meaningful effort. This article reframes AI as a potential catalyst for improving legal education rather than inherently a threat.
Concerns about de-skilling generally are based on the assumption that faculty will not change traditional writing assignments. This article analyzes why these assignments often fail to help students develop strong analytical and writing skills. These include limited instruction in basic writing skills, poor design, lack of feedback, and faculty inertia in …

Grado en Diseño de Interiores
COMÚNIA stems from a desire to reinterpret the day center as an extension of everyday life. Moving away from clinical or institutional settings, the project proposes a domestic, warm, and familiar environment—an architectural space that supports individuals with early-stage Alzheimer’s without constantly reminding them of their condition. The design draws inspiration from the interplay between homes and the neighborhood square, viewing these areas as settings for social interaction, autonomy, and shared memories. Each floor represents a different way of experiencing the day: the main floor functions like a town square—a space for socializing and activity; the upper floor offers a …
Efficient And Fair Resource Unit(Ru) Allocation Methods For The Ofdma Mechanism Under Ieee 802.11ax, Yang Yu
Efficient And Fair Resource Unit(Ru) Allocation Methods For The Ofdma Mechanism Under Ieee 802.11ax, Yang Yu
Doctoral
The IEEE 802.11ax standard was approved in February 2021. This standard allows users to access different channel bandwidths to transmit their packets under the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) mechanism. As the number of Internet users and the number of Internet applications increase, the allocation of channel resources has been a challenge in WLANs. Different types of applications, such as real-time video conferencing, online gaming and large-scale data transfers, generate different requirements in terms of throughput, latency and reliability. Consequently, the diversity in users’ channel bandwidth demands is increasing. Under the OFDMA mechanism, the packets can be allocated into …

Sharing Patient-Generated Health Data With Electronic Health Record: A Standardised Provenance And Context-Rich Information Model And Clinician Evaluation, Abdullahi Abubakar Kawu
Dissertations
With the advent of Patient-Generated Health Data (PGHD) through wearable, mobile, and home monitoring systems, there is immense potential for ongoing monitoring and patient engagement. But integrating PGHD with Electronic Health Record (EHR) is challenged by sub-optimal support for contextual metadata and its relevant elements, lack of semantic interoperability among disparate systems, poor knowledge regarding the factors that impact clinician acceptance, and absence of globally agreed standards for data exchange. This thesis explores how contextually relevant patient-generated health data can be shared with EHRs through a FAIR standardized information model that ensures semantic and syntactic interoperability.
The study addresses six …
Visual Analytics For Interpretable Quantum Computing, Shaolun Ruan
Visual Analytics For Interpretable Quantum Computing, Shaolun Ruan
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Quantum computing has entered a stage of increasing practicality. Many quantum hardware vendors such as IBM, Rigetti, Honeywell, and IonQ now enable experiments on real devices in the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) era. These platforms show computational advantages in domains such as optimization, machine learning, and materials science. However, they remain limited by hardware noise and the absence of human-interpretable information. Existing visual metaphors, such as the Bloch Sphere for single-qubit states or circuit schematics for algorithm design, struggle to convey multi-qubit entanglement or measurement probabilities in ways accessible to human reasoning. Likewise, the rise of variational quantum circuits and …

Improving Pid Control With Bayesian Optimization For Adversarially Robust Federated Learning, Adrian Pena, Sergei Chuprov, Raman Zatsarenko, Leon Reznik
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Federated Learning (FL) often suffers from unstable convergence and reduced robustness under non-IID data and malicious attacks. In this paper, we present FedPIDAvg_tuned, a control-theoretic aggregation framework for improving stability and adversarial robustness in FL. In particular, our approach combines a server-side Proportional–Integral–Derivative (PID) controller with Bayesian optimization to tune controller gains for different data and attack conditions. The PID controller regulates global model updates through feedback on loss dynamics, providing adaptive scaling that improves stability and convergence. The tuned gains are applied within a trust-weighted trimmed-mean mechanism to remove adversarial or outlier updates. Using the Flower framework, we evaluate …

Cohabitation has become an increasingly common context for childrearing, yet children living with cohabiting parents often exhibit poorer academic outcomes than peers with married parents. This study examines whether these disparities stem from cohabitation itself, subsequent family transitions, or underlying mechanisms related to resources, stress, or selectivity. Using data from the Growing Up in Australia: Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC), we follow 920 children born to cohabiting parents and track family structure changes alongside teacher-rated literacy and mathematics performance from ages 6 to 11 years. Generalized estimating equation models show that, although children whose parents transitioned to single-parent or …

Educational technologists have not settled on a fixed definition of the field and likely never will. However, attempting to define the field helps to understand the epistemological meanings that shape what the field sees, values, and considers worth pursuing. Through a critical historical review spanning over a century, alongside theoretical engagement with the concepts of entanglement and distributed agency, this paper identifies three key insufficiencies in current educational technology frameworks. These are the persistence of an instrumental-facilitative paradigm that treats technology as a resource deployed by human agents; the theoretical dissolution of the pedagogy-technology dichotomy that existing definitions have not …
Authorship Nonsense, Jessica Litman
Authorship Nonsense, Jessica Litman
Articles
Copyright law’s primary device for promoting progress is to bestow rights on the authors of works. Rights vest automatically and last for a very long time. Authors’ choices to retain, license, or transfer those rights fuel opportunities to communicate the works to their audiences. The copyright system’s mechanisms for determining who authored works (and therefore automatically obtained copyright rights) should be both accurate and reliable, since misidentifications will undermine the law’s working as intended.
This article examines authors’ creation of works and copyright law’s handling of authorship disputes. Many works result from creative collaboration. Although the copyright statute incorporates mechanisms …

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
This DNP project modified a deprescribing initiative to engage frontline nursing staff. The intervention included a comprehensive educational curriculum, clinical guidelines, and a system to track nurse workflow and financial metrics. Guided by Donabedian’s conceptual model, the project was piloted in a large municipal PAC facility. Methods included twelve in-person training sessions for 93 nurses, pre- and post-knowledge tests, a program evaluation, medication pass times, and tracked the costs deprescribed medications over six months.Nursing knowledge significantly improved, with mean test scores rising from 41.39 to 90.64 (p < .001). Medication pass decreased by 18%, reducing the time per resident from 7 to 5.7 minutes. Financially, the initiative saved over $21,000 in six months, with a projected annual savings exceeding $42,000. Integrating nurses as leaders in deprescribing enhances clinical competency and operational efficiency. These findings provide a compelling case for standardizing an interdisciplinary deprescribing program to improve financial sustainability, nursing efficiency and resident safety in the PAC setting.

AbstractHepatitis C (HCV) is a curable hepatic disease. With direct-acting antivirals, it can be treated in 95% of cases. When left untreated, it can cause severe liver disease, including hepatocellular carcinoma and even death. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) goal is to eliminate HCV by 2030. This Quality Improvement (QI) project, conducted at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) from 8/4/2025 to 11/4/2025, will address the barriers to elimination and show that providing local services closes gaps. Screening and treating HCV within primary care has become a strategic approach to enhance access to treatment. This involves developing and utilizing a …
The Effect Of Verbal De-Escalation Simulation Training Using Artificial Intelligence On Nurse Leader’S Self-Efficacy, Mary Vitullo
The Effect Of Verbal De-Escalation Simulation Training Using Artificial Intelligence On Nurse Leader’S Self-Efficacy, Mary Vitullo
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Per year, rates of verbal workplace violence (V-WPV) are estimated to occur in 38.8 per 100 nurses, which is decreasing leader retention (NIOSH, 2020, Chang, Hsu, & Ouyang, 2022). Increasing the confidence of nurses in handling V-WPV through simulated training programs increases their intent to stay (Ming et al., 2019).
A two-pronged training program allowed nurse leaders to learn de-escalation techniques and then apply that knowledge in a life-like simulated environment. The education included a pre-work module on V-WPV de-escalation and a simulated scenario using an artificial intelligence conversational agent.
The aims of the project were: to develop a model, …
Exploring Parent-Child Reminiscing Style And Internal-State Talk When Discussing Positive And Negative Shared Events, Komal Verma Miss.
Exploring Parent-Child Reminiscing Style And Internal-State Talk When Discussing Positive And Negative Shared Events, Komal Verma Miss.
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Conversations between parents and children about past events play a critical role in children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development. Parents scaffold their children in learning to recount details of their autobiographical memories by creating a space to reflect on internal states, specifically emotions and cognitions. Parents with an ‘elaborative’ reminiscing style are responsive to children’s utterances and ask open-ended questions (e.g., What do you remember about...?). Parents who are less ‘elaborative’ typically ask narrow questions like Did you like it?” that do not encourage conversation. Children whose parents use an elaborative reminiscing style have children who produce the most detailed …

Aquaculture now outpaces traditional capture fisheries as the world population and demand for sustainable protein sources increases. Wild and farmed species are increasingly susceptible to pathogen spread as global temperatures rise and stocking densities increase. Despite the devastating losses experienced by aquaculture due to viral infections, there remain few effective prophylactic antiviral therapeutics. Long double-stranded (ds)RNA is a uniquely viral molecule produced by nearly all viruses during their replication cycle, and its detection by salmonids like rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytsha) leads to the establishment of a defensive antiviral state. Previous in vitro studies demonstrated a …

This thesis addresses how animals cope with unpredictability by testing how environmental stability changes the behaviour of zebrafish (Danio rerio) in two complementary experiments. In Experiment 1, fish lived for three months in either a Dynamic environment (water temperature, feeding times, habitat complexity, group size, and membership fluctuated) or a Stable environment (all factors constant). Across seven behavioural assays, measuring individual behavioural differences, collective movement, social memory, and information use, Dynamic condition fish were found to be more sensitive to social cues and more likely to conform to recent social information, independent of the quality of the information …
