Parking Information And Supervision System, Joshua A. Thum, Alex J. Kinch, Jacob A. Dye

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In densely populated areas, finding parking can be an arduous and time-consuming struggle, especially in large and tall parking decks. Drivers would benefit from a convenient way to find an open parking spot without having to scour the entire lot first. The goal of this project is to sense available parking spots in a parking garage or parking lot using physical object detection and visual detection with computer vision verification, and display the open spots to drivers entering the lot. This information will be displayed locally at the lot and in an app, with the latter allowing someone to see …

High-Speed Non-Pneumatic Tire (Npt) Design For Speeds Above 60 Mph, Jacob Grams, Brady Maurer, Jake Groewa Jan 2026

High-Speed Non-Pneumatic Tire (Npt) Design For Speeds Above 60 Mph, Jacob Grams, Brady Maurer, Jake Groewa

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This project focuses on developing a high-speed non-pneumatic tire (NPT) capable of safely operating at speeds greater than 60 mph, a performance range where most existing airless tire designs fail due to structural instability and performance limitations. The objective of this work is to design, analyze, and prototype a structurally optimized honeycomb-based tire structure with improved load distribution, deformation control, and durability. Multiple geometries were evaluated using finite element analysis (FEA) to assess stress and maximum resultant (total) displacement behavior under loading conditions, and a material selection study was performed to identify a suitable material for the design. The final …

Robotic Air Hockey Table, William Forcey, Andrew Piunno, Kaden Carpenter, Xander Zavatchen Jan 2026

Robotic Air Hockey Table, William Forcey, Andrew Piunno, Kaden Carpenter, Xander Zavatchen

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Air hockey, a popular arcade game, is traditionally designed for two players. This limits the game’s accessibility for individuals who wish to practice or enjoy it as a single player. To solve this problem, a robotic system was implemented to play air hockey against a human player. The speed and acceleration of the puck and mallet were measured from a game played between humans to inform the required movement capabilities of the robot. The robotic opponent implemented observes the location of the puck on the table using a camera and predicts where it will be in the future. A Cartesian …

Ramadan Hardcore By Hicham Habchi E Mehdi Yassire, Sarah Nesti Willard Jan 2026

Ramadan Hardcore By Hicham Habchi E Mehdi Yassire, Sarah Nesti Willard

Books and Book Chapters

This article examines Ramadan Hardcore, a graphic novel by Hicham Habchi and Mehdi Yassire, through a visual and contextual analysis. It explores how the novel’s raw illustrative style reinforces its title and narrative, creating a powerful emotional impact while presenting an authentic, and at times deliberately exaggerated, representation of reality. Using visual semiotic analysis, the study demonstrates how the artwork reflects the authors’ lived experiences and contributes to the novel’s gritty, direct atmosphere. The article also discusses the controversy surrounding the graphic novel’s provocative title, noting that although it initially attracted considerable attention, interest quickly declined and copies have …

Two-Pyramids Model Of Radicalization To Terrorism, Clark Mccauley, Sophia Moskalenko Jan 2026

Two-Pyramids Model Of Radicalization To Terrorism, Clark Mccauley, Sophia Moskalenko

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

This chapter reviews the origins and developments of the Two-Pyramids Model of radicalization, which distinguishes between the radicalization of opinions and the radicalization of actions. The Radicalization of Action Pyramid categorizes individuals from passive (inert) to those committing terrorist acts, while the Radicalization of Opinion Pyramid progresses from neutrality to a personal moral obligation to act violently for a cause. Empirical studies, including the Activism and Radicalism Intention Scales (ARIS), support the model’s distinction between activism and radicalism as separate dimensions. The chapter highlights the importance of group dynamics, diagnostic and prognostic frames, and the role of public opinion in …

Fear And Coercion In Government Definitions Of Terrorism, Clark Mccauley Jan 2026

Fear And Coercion In Government Definitions Of Terrorism, Clark Mccauley

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

In this chapter I review government definitions of terrorism to show the popularity of assuming that terrorists aim to coerce governments and their citizens through fear. Then I draw out some of the costs of this assumption for analysts of terrorism, practitioners of counterterrorism, and targets of terrorist attacks. Including fear and coercion in definitions of terrorism blinds us to the importance of terrorist aims other than coercion, of emotions other than fear, and of audiences other than terrorist victims. In particular I argue that terrorists aim to elicit anger and overreaction that will advance their cause. Ignoring this strategy …

Environmental Degradation And Food Systems In Ghana: Gold Mining And Synthetic Pesticides, Da'mirah Vinson Jan 2026

Environmental Degradation And Food Systems In Ghana: Gold Mining And Synthetic Pesticides, Da'mirah Vinson

Honors Theses

This research examines the relationship between environmental degradation and food systems in Ghana. Although sociological research has explored how extractive practices like gold mining dispossesses farmers of land (Gilbert and Albert 2016; Agariga 2021; Kwang and Blagogie 2025), the consequences for food sovereignty and security remain understudied. Research that considers food and land from a sociocultural perspective is even more limited. My research addresses these gaps by asking: How do environmental degradation practices—specifically gold mining and chemical use—affect food production, distribution, and security in Ghana? And how does the decline of arable land reshape cultural food identity? To explore these …

Always Green, Ever Living, Anna Plante

Honors Theses

The Creative Honors Thesis, “Always Green, Ever Living," is an experimental essay film that explores the complexities and contradictions of environmental conservation, up against the contemporary climate crisis. The film is centered on Muir Woods National Monument and follows a young girl's relationship with nature. The film reflects on how protected natural spaces are influenced by systems of funding, access, and interpretation, as well as broader environmental pressures. Using a combination of archival footage, original imagery, narration, and ambient sound, the project adopts the essayistic structure that prioritizes reflection over linear storytelling.

Genre Based Analysis Of Sustainability In Contemporary U.S. Film Production: Inception Or Illusion?, Tanner Ennis Jan 2026

Genre Based Analysis Of Sustainability In Contemporary U.S. Film Production: Inception Or Illusion?, Tanner Ennis

Interdisciplinary Studies | Senior Theses

Anthropogenic activity is actively leading to environmental degradation, highlighting the need for large industries to take responsibility for their environmental impact, particularly the film industry. While sustainable practices in the film industry such as virtual production, recycling of set construction materials, or the use of renewable energy present opportunities to improve sustainability, there is still a substantial amount of progress to be made. For example, research has demonstrated that increases in production budget correlate with higher carbon dioxide emissions, with fuel, utilities, and travel acting as the top contributors (Sustainable Entertainment Alliance, 2022). Conversation among the scholarly community is centered …

Under Academic Pressure: Student Mental Health And The Law, Lorenza Zanaga Jan 2026

Under Academic Pressure: Student Mental Health And The Law, Lorenza Zanaga

Florida Atlantic University Undergraduate Law Journal

Mental health has become a significant concern for students in higher education, particularly in demanding programs such as graduate studies, where long hours, heavy workloads, and intense pressure are common occurrences. As more students face burnout, anxiety, and depression, experts have raised an important question: How can schools better support students’ mental health? What legal responsibility do universities and professional schools have to protect students' mental well-being? This article argues that colleges and professional programs should be legally required to support student mental health, as excessive academic workloads can directly harm students. By examining how academic pressure affects students and …

Therapist Self-Disclosure And Therapeutic Alliance: A Survey Of Psychologists, Miriam Smith M.S. Jan 2026

Therapist Self-Disclosure And Therapeutic Alliance: A Survey Of Psychologists, Miriam Smith M.S.

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Of the various forms of therapist self-disclosure, immediate self-disclosure (ISD) refers to the therapist’s sharing of immediate thoughts, feelings, and reactions with the patient in real time. In previous research, ISD has been positively associated with the therapeutic alliance. The therapeutic alliance has been conceptualized as agreement on goals, agreement on assignment of tasks or a series of tasks to achieve those goals, and the quality of the emotional bond. Non-immediate self-disclosure (NISD) is defined as the therapist divulging personal or biographical information about themselves or their life outside treatment. NISD has been found to be risky and potentially harmful …

Leadership And Creative Placemaking In Central Appalachia: Morehead, Kentucky, Toni C. Hobbs Jan 2026

Leadership And Creative Placemaking In Central Appalachia: Morehead, Kentucky, Toni C. Hobbs

Theses and Dissertations--Arts Administration

In rural Appalachia, longstanding patterns of extractive economic development, coupled with limited public investment and uneven institutional support, have contributed to persistent economic stagnation and a diminished sense of pride among residents. These conditions reflect deeper structural challenges, including economies shaped by resource extraction and external control. Addressing these conditions is critical to fostering economic growth, promoting cultural heritage, and enhancing overall well-being in the region. By cultivating resilient communities, leaders can create environments in which both the economy and local pride can thrive, contributing to a more prosperous and unified Appalachian region.

This study investigates the organizational and leadership …

Opera Houses In Aberdeen, Huron, And Watertown, Sd: 1880-1910s, Janet M. Meyer Jan 2026

Opera Houses In Aberdeen, Huron, And Watertown, Sd: 1880-1910s, Janet M. Meyer

Dissertations and Theses

In the 1880s, many newcomers arrived in Dakota Territory for a new start in Aberdeen, Huron, and Watertown. Their arrival coincided with the popularity of opera houses, so it was not surprising that entrepreneurs built opera houses in these new towns. The early opera houses included several benefits. They provided important gathering places for growing communities to hold meetings and social functions. The settler-colonial society included people from foreign countries and eastern states. Opera houses were also beneficial by providing familiar shows and concerts, perhaps some shows the residents previously enjoyed in their homes back east. Knowing that an entertainment …

Eletric Charging Arm Mechanism - E-Charm, Jacob A. Lewis, Gabriel A. Greer

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

As demand for electric and hybrid vehicles continues to rise, many EV owners rely on home charging in their garages. Gabriel Greer and I’s Senior Design Project, the Electric Charging Arm Mechanism (ECHARM), addresses this by creating a robotic system that autonomously detects a vehicle’s charging port, connects to it, and returns to a rest position when charging is complete. ECHARM is designed as a six-axis robotic arm with wrist and shoulder joints driven by stepper motors through custom cycloidal drive gearboxes. A closed-loop control system using rotary potentiometers ensures precise motion control. At the end of the arm is …

Not Eu Enough: The Eu's Proposed Multilateral Investment Court As An Infeasible Replacement For The Intra-Eu Isds Mechanism After The Achmea Decision, Rohit Rakhit

Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law

In the landmark case Slovak Republic v. Achmea BV, the European Union Court of Justice (CJEU) invalidated Article 8 of the 1992 Dutch-Slovak bilateral investment treaty (BIT), holding that it conflicted with EU law. Article 8 included a provision which mandated that any party initiating an investor-state dispute governed under the Dutch-Slovak BIT bring the dispute in front of an arbitration tribunal. Since this form of investor-state dispute resolution was customary in the EU, states and investors became concerned about what the future of investment arbitration would look like in the EU. As a solution, the EU proposed the implementation …
