Navigating Kingship: Sea Power And Sovereignty In Gower's Confessio Amantis, Elizabeth D. Brissey Jan 2026

Navigating Kingship: Sea Power And Sovereignty In Gower's Confessio Amantis, Elizabeth D. Brissey

Accessus

This article examines John Gower’s Apollonius of Tyre in the Confessio Amantis through the lens of the blue humanities, giving special attention to the ways in which the tale treats the sovereign’s maritime domain as integral to the terrestrial. Apollonius depicts sovereignty over aquapelagic space, with the sea serving both as a channel of exchange and as a figurative medium through which sovereignty is negotiated. The crucial issue that aligns the Apollonius tale with the concept of English sovereignty lies in its vision of thalassocratic space in which kingship is grounded in sea power and the sea as a connecting …

Assessing The Influence Of Audit Committee Characteristics On The Effectiveness Of Risk Management Practices In Public Statutory Corporations In Tanzania, Gerald J. Soi, Siasa Issa Mzenzi, Said Suluo

Business Management Review

This study was conducted to examine the influence of audit committee characteristics on the effectiveness of risk management in Public Statutory Corporations (PSCs) in Tanzania, and the moderating effect of the size of an entity on this relationship. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data, which was completed by 424 chief internal auditors and directors of finance from PSCs across various Tanzanian regions, and analysed using SmartPLS (PLS-SEM) version 4.0. The findings indicate that the expertise of the audit committee and the frequency of meetings with a substantive risk agenda positively influence risk management effectiveness in PSCs. Conversely, the …

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Prostate cancer (PCa) is a common malignancy in men worldwide, with incidence projected to rise in the coming years. Traditional screening and diagnostic methods, such as prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing and biopsy, face limitations in specificity and invasiveness. Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as stable, non-invasive biomarkers obtainable via liquid biopsies (blood, urine, semen) that could transform PCa management. These small regulatory RNAs reflect underlying tumor biology and are detectable at early disease stages, enabling improved early detection when used alongside or in place of PSA. Distinct miRNA expression patterns correlate with tumor aggressiveness. For example, miR-141 and miR-375 are …

Peeling The Onion: A Study Of Audience Reactions To Anti-Classism Satire, Charisse L’Pree Corsbie-Massay, Martina Santia, Luvell Anderson Jan 2026

Peeling The Onion: A Study Of Audience Reactions To Anti-Classism Satire, Charisse L’Pree Corsbie-Massay, Martina Santia, Luvell Anderson

Department of Political Science and Law Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The topics of socioeconomic status, class, and income inequality are integral to human rights. However, media misrepresentation of socioeconomic class and the pervasive national narrative of social mobility inhibit audiences’ ability to understand and mobilize around these issues. Satire can disrupt this cycle by effectively exposing the inconsistencies of class inequality and the flaws of the “American Dream.” Thus, we examine the potential of satire to challenge prevailing attitudes toward class inequality and bolster anti-classism confidence through an online study featuring written satirical articles from The Onion categorized based on style (aggressive vs. benign) and target (individual vs. institutional). Overall, …

The Mission And Ministry Of The East Asian Pastoral Institute For The Local Churches In Asia And Oceania, Paul B. Steffen, Svd Jan 2026

The Mission And Ministry Of The East Asian Pastoral Institute For The Local Churches In Asia And Oceania, Paul B. Steffen, Svd

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

The EAPI is a typical international, interregional pastoral institute. It trains primarily multipliers in the ecclesial-pastoral ministry for the Asia-Pacific region. In 1986/87, 20 years after the first course, the institute had 14 resident members in the teaching staff. The novelty of the Pastoral Institute has been able to consolidate itself in this region and meet the existing needs. The EAPI is today a centre for the ecclesial-pastoral renewal of the Asian-Pacific local churches and it also contributes to the exchange of pastoral experiences with other local churches.

Pastoral Ministry At The Intersections Of Life For A Synodal Church In Asia, Charles Bertille Jan 2026

Pastoral Ministry At The Intersections Of Life For A Synodal Church In Asia, Charles Bertille

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

This paper is condensed from the Keynote Address presented by the author at EAPI's 60th Anniversary. Pastoral ministry in Asia unfolds amid pluralism, migration, inequality, and shifting identities, requiring a vision beyond sacramental maintenance toward lived experience and communal struggle. Rooted in Vatican II, Asian theology, and the Synod on Synodality, ministry is participatory, dialogical, and mission-oriented. Synodality calls for conversion of spirit and structure: humility, discernment, and trust. Leadership must be missionary, interculturally competent, and committed to the poor and creation. Formation institutes such as EAPI and NIFSA serve as laboratories for synodal practice, fostering prophetic leadership. Ultimately, synodality …

Exploring In Vitro Interactions Of Core Microbes From The Ciona Robusta Gut, Yanori M. Ferguson, Alyssa L. Fischer, Ojas Natarajan, Larry J. Dishaw

Making Waves REU

The disruption of homeostasis in the gut microbiome is linked to various host immune and metabolic imbalances. Therefore, there is a need to elucidate the roles of microbes in maintaining homeostasis in the gut microbiome.

Fungi are often overlooked components of gut flora. Here, we investigate in vitro interactions between core microbiota genera from the C. robusta gut: Candida (a yeast), Pseudoalteromonas (bacteria) and Vibrio (bacteria).

The Phyrfly Opus: A Unified Standard For Spectrally Isolated Coordination, Neural Hierarchies, And Distributed Proprioception, Steven Kirkland Jan 2026

The Phyrfly Opus: A Unified Standard For Spectrally Isolated Coordination, Neural Hierarchies, And Distributed Proprioception, Steven Kirkland

Defensive Publications Series

This monograph establishes 259 prior art claims for a decentralized, connectionless timing and positioning architecture (TARDIS). It formalizes the PHYRFLY nomenclature to distinguish low-level, hardware-scheduled Physical-Layer synchronization primitives from higher-level application orchestration.

The core novelty centers on a Spectral Isolation Model, which maps transport-agnostic architecture to biological firefly wavelength differentiation; this enables swarm-level isolation through physics (e.g., 802.11 vs. 802.15.4) rather than protocol-layer logic, ensuring that independent swarms occupying the same physical space are "blind" to one another at the RF front-end.

Key technical advancements established as prior art include:

  • The Neural Hierarchy (Neuron → Ganglion → Plexus → …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Natural killer (NK) cells are integral to the innate immune system, playing a crucial role in immune surveillance and the rapid response to virally infected and tumor cells. Epigenetic gene expression regulation significantly influences NK cell function and differentiation. Using a high-throughput small-molecule drug screening approach, we identified bromodomain and extra-terminal domain (BET) inhibitors (BETi) as potent modulators of NK cell function, reducing proinflammatory cytokine secretion while increasing markers of NK cell maturation and cytotoxicity. During NK lineage specification from hematopoietic stem cells, we demonstrated that BETi reduced NK cell fate and promoted increased myeloid cell differentiation. Moreover, differentiated NK …

Peace, Hope, And The Order Of Love: An Augustinian Perspective On Political Life, La Thi Thu Trang Jan 2026

Peace, Hope, And The Order Of Love: An Augustinian Perspective On Political Life, La Thi Thu Trang

Loyola Papers

This article examines the relevance of the political thought of Augustine of Hippo for contemporary social and political challenges. Focusing on Augustine’s concepts of peace, hope, and ordo amoris (the order of love), the study proposes a theological framework for responsible political engagement within the limitations of the earthly city. Engaging the interpretation of Michael Lamb, the paper highlights the dynamic relationship between hope and charity as guiding virtues that sustain civic responsibility while avoiding both despair and naïve optimism in political life.

A Critical Analysis Of The Protestant Principle Of Sola Scriptura In Light Of Catholic Arguments On The Temporal Precedence Of Tradition And The Formal Insufficiency Of Scripture, Salvador G. Agualada Jr. Jan 2026

A Critical Analysis Of The Protestant Principle Of Sola Scriptura In Light Of Catholic Arguments On The Temporal Precedence Of Tradition And The Formal Insufficiency Of Scripture, Salvador G. Agualada Jr.

Loyola Papers

This paper critiques the Protestant doctrine of Sola Scriptura from a Catholic theological perspective. It argues that Christian Tradition historically precedes Scripture and that, while Scripture is materially sufficient for revelation, it is formally insufficient apart from the living Tradition of the Church. The study further develops the Catholic position through the thought of the French Dominican theologian Yves Congar, particularly his notion of “the whole genius of tradition.” Drawing on the teaching of Dei Verbum of the Second Vatican Council, the paper emphasizes the intrinsic and inseparable relationship among Scripture, Tradition, and Magisterium.

The Place Of Touch In Greco-Roman Antiquity And In The Old Testament, Dom Joseph B. Bulan Jan 2026

The Place Of Touch In Greco-Roman Antiquity And In The Old Testament, Dom Joseph B. Bulan

Loyola Papers

This article examines the significance of touch in Greco-Roman Antiquity and the Old Testament. Through an interdisciplinary approach drawing from philosophy, law, medicine, religious practice, and biblical ritual, the study retrieves touch as a meaningful and performative medium that conveys power, holiness, and social order. It shows how touch functions to establish boundaries, mediate relationships, and regulate access to the sacred. By comparing Greco-Roman sensory hierarchies with Israel’s covenantal and purity-centered worldview, the article highlights key distinctions between holiness and purity and contributes to ongoing discussions in biblical theology, ritual theory, and theological anthropology.

The Human Person As Relatio In Joseph Ratzinger’S Logos-Dialogos Theology, Junmar Cris N. Caputolan Jan 2026

The Human Person As Relatio In Joseph Ratzinger’S Logos-Dialogos Theology, Junmar Cris N. Caputolan

Loyola Papers

This article examines the concept of the human person as relatio in the theology of Joseph Ratzinger. Marking the twentieth anniversary of Ratzinger’s election as pope, the paper situates his Logos-Dialogos theology at the intersection of Christology and theological anthropology. It traces the development of personhood from Augustine of Hippo and Boethius to Richard of St. Victor, culminating in Ratzinger’s relational vision of the human person. The study highlights how faith, reason, and love converge in a dialogical understanding of personhood oriented toward communion with God and others.

Audit Expectation Gap Factors And Stakeholders’ Confidence In Nigerian Quoted Firms, Abdul-Azeez Adeniyi Alao, Okikijesu Olaide Olaniyan, Olumayowa Ayorinde Jacob

Journal of Accounting Auditing and Business

The Audit Expectation Gap (AEG) has emerged as a demanding concern in the auditing profession, with far-reaching implications for corporate governance, financial reporting, and stakeholder trust; hence, this study investigated the effect of the AEG factors on the stakeholders’ confidence in Nigerian quoted firms. The study employed a cross-sectional survey research design, while a total of one hundred and three (103) valid responses were used for the analysis. The data was analysed via the regression analysis with the aid of the Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences (SPSS) at a 5 per cent level of significance. The findings revealed that …

The Use Of The Church Fathers In John Henry Newman’S An Essay On The Development Of Christian Doctrine, Salvador G. Agualada, Jr. Jan 2026

The Use Of The Church Fathers In John Henry Newman’S An Essay On The Development Of Christian Doctrine, Salvador G. Agualada, Jr.

Landas

This paper offers a systematic summary of John Henry Newman’s An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, with particular attention to his sustained and methodical use of the Church Fathers. It traces how Newman consistently appeals to patristic testimony in articulating and illustrating his seven “notes” of authentic doctrinal development, showing that the Fathers function not merely as historical witnesses but as integral components of his theological reasoning. By following the structure of the Essay itself, the study highlights the role of patristic sources in Newman’s distinction between genuine developments and corruptions of doctrine. The paper is primarily expository …

Proposed Pathways For Renewal: Fabc Restructuring In The Light Of Synodality, Charles Bertille Jan 2026

Proposed Pathways For Renewal: Fabc Restructuring In The Light Of Synodality, Charles Bertille

Landas

Church organizations, like secular ones, face ageing, inertia, and the need for reform. Management scholars argue renewal is best pursued during an organization’s prime, when it is thriving. The Synod on Synodality offers such a pathway, continuing the vision of Vatican II. Renewal is urgent today, given shifting mission contexts and declining religious participation, with many Christians among the religiously disaffiliated. In the build-up to the FABC 50 assembly (November 2022), bishops’ conferences in Asia raised concerns about the Church’s internal life—its structures, ministries, relationships, and governance; and called for a review of the organizational framework of the FABC. For …

St. Ignatius Of Loyola’S Engagement With Mystagogy, Roberto Ma. R. Buenconsejo Jan 2026

St. Ignatius Of Loyola’S Engagement With Mystagogy, Roberto Ma. R. Buenconsejo

Landas

Ignatius of Loyola’s spiritual progress unfolded as a transformative mystagogical journey shaped by two decisive conversions that prepared him for the illuminative stage and unitive life. His first conversion followed the battle of Pamplona, when he turned from a sinful past toward an initial desire to follow Christ to Jerusalem. This conversion, however, remained marked by narcissism and externalism. A second and more radical conversion occurred in Manresa, involving the purification of his self-propelled perfectionism. During this period, Ignatius entered the purgative stage through active asceticism and a painful passive purification characterized by scrupulosity and deep depression rooted in the …

Prayer And Self-Communication: Revisiting Joseph Ratzinger’S Eucharistic Ecclesiology, Antonio Esquillon Jan 2026

Prayer And Self-Communication: Revisiting Joseph Ratzinger’S Eucharistic Ecclesiology, Antonio Esquillon

Landas

This article explores the Eucharistic Ecclesiology of Joseph Ratzinger, which takes its bearings from Christology. It discusses how Ratzinger understands the Church as fundamentally originating from the prayer of Jesus, which assumes its supreme expression in His Eucharistic self-communication. The communication and communicability of the Body of Christ finally draws out the intrinsic connection between Christology, Pneumatology, and Ecclesiology, so central in Ratzinger’s Eucharistic Ecclesiology.

Structural Parallels Between Populism And Catholicism: Vox Populi, Vox Dei, Jose Mario C. Francisco Jan 2026

Structural Parallels Between Populism And Catholicism: Vox Populi, Vox Dei, Jose Mario C. Francisco

Landas

Why do populist groups attract religion as a partner or foe? Responses to this question often remain on the functional level and primarily stress the material content of populist and religious doctrines. Thus, they generate heated partisan polemics rather than enlightening insight. This multidisciplinary study focuses on the structural parallels in gathering people and discovering their authoritative will in the body politic and religious. First, it notes the family resemblance in their composition. Given the populist association of ‘the people’ with the nation, the authoritative will of the people serves as its ground and goal. The Christian ekklesia or gathered …
