BACKGROUND: Perioperative nerve blocks are commonly used for regional analgesia with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR). Liposomal bupivacaine (LB) is a long-acting anesthetic agent providing up to 72 hours of nerve blockade. It is theorized that the addition of dexamethasone to LB (LB+dex) may prolong the analgesic duration.

PURPOSE: To characterize pain control and opioid consumption with adductor canal block (ACB), interspace between the popliteal artery and capsule of the posterior knee (iPACK), and suprasartorial infiltration (SSI) regional anesthetic techniques utilizing LB after ACLR and to compare LB versus LB+dex.

STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 1. …

Death Of Substantiality: Why The Legal System Should Rethink The Application And Weight Of This Fair-Use Factor In The Context Of Social Media, Lindsey Vickers Jan 2026

Death Of Substantiality: Why The Legal System Should Rethink The Application And Weight Of This Fair-Use Factor In The Context Of Social Media, Lindsey Vickers

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

The fair use test for exemption for liability from copyright infringement was codified in the 1970s and has not been updated since—despite major technological changes in the interim. While three of the test’s four prongs are still useful when applied to short-form media that now dominates worldwide media consumption, the factor that considers the substantiality of the portion used relative to the total work is obsolete. The current dysfunctionality of this prong in social media settings is not the only reason it should be reassessed by courts and Congress. The prong and its analysis are a bit of a Frankenstein. …

Fluid Agency In Ai Systems: A Case For Functional Equivalence In Copyright, Patent, And Tort, Anirban Mukherjee, Hannah H. Chang Jan 2026

Fluid Agency In Ai Systems: A Case For Functional Equivalence In Copyright, Patent, And Tort, Anirban Mukherjee, Hannah H. Chang

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

Modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems lack human-like consciousness or culpability, yet they exhibit fluid agency: behavior that is (i) stochastic (probabilistic and path-dependent), (ii) dynamic (co-evolving with user interaction), and (iii) adaptive (able to reorient across contexts). Fluid agency generates valuable outputs but collapses attribution, irreducibly entangling human and machine inputs. This fundamental unmappability fractures doctrines that assume traceable provenance—authorship, inventorship, and liability—yielding ownership gaps and moral “crumple zones.”

This Article argues that only functional equivalence stabilizes doctrine. Where provenance is indeterminate, legal frameworks must treat human and AI contributions as equivalent for allocating rights and responsibility—not as a claim …

A Suite Of Thermal Switches For Surviving Extreme Thermal Environments In Space, Matthew I. Ralphs, Matt Jensen, Alexis Eames, Matt Sinfield

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

Thermal switches are a key enabling technology for spacecraft operating in extreme thermal environments. Whether surviving the lunar night, managing intermittent high-power loads from deep space communication systems, or dealing with other extreme thermal environments, high-performance thermal switches allow critical missions to operate beyond conventional thermal design limits. This paper presents the development, testing, and performance of a suite of passive thermal switches designed for both spacecraft- and subsystem-level thermal control. The suite includes: (1) traditional in-line switch placed between sensitive components and radiators; (2) compact designs suitable for integration into standard bolted joint interfaces to modulate the conductance between …

Biogeochemical Cycling Of Dissolved Zinc And Zinc Isotopes In The Arctic Ocean, Elise Langer, Dylan J. Halbeisen, Ruifeng Zhang, Seth G. John, Tim M. Conway Jan 2026

Biogeochemical Cycling Of Dissolved Zinc And Zinc Isotopes In The Arctic Ocean, Elise Langer, Dylan J. Halbeisen, Ruifeng Zhang, Seth G. John, Tim M. Conway

Making Waves REU

  • Dissolved Zinc (dZn) is an essential micronutrient that supports primary productivity in the ocean (Morel & Price, 2003).
  • Dissolved zinc isotope ratios (δ⁶⁶Zn) help us understand the sources, sinks, and internal cycling of dZn (Bermin et al. 2006; Conway and John, 2014, Horner et al. 2021).
  • The background deep ocean has a largely homogenous δ⁶⁶Zn composition of +0.45‰ (Conway and John, 2014), thus deviations away from +0.45±0.05‰ suggest dZn input, loss, or alteration (Fig. 1).
  • We hypothesize that margin sediments and freshwater input deliver isotopically light dZn to the coastal Arctic (Jensen et al. 2019).
  • Near the North Pole, We …

Simulation Results Of Spaceborne Ssa Using A Comprehensive Passive Radar Model, Chinmay Gaikwad, Filipe Senra, Thomas Alan Lovell, Hao Peng, Berker Pekoz, Tianyu Yang

Publications

In this paper, a high-fidelity simulation framework is developed to assess the feasibility of tracking space debris using a large low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation equipped with onboard passive radar sensors. By exploiting illumination from a distributed network of ground-based transmitters, the constellation provides consistent line-of-sight access to debris objects at higher altitudes, enabling angles-only detection and tracking. This approach yields a scalable, automated, and cost-effective architecture for next-generation space surveillance and contributes to more resilient space traffic management. A complete angles-only passive-radar orbit-determination pipeline is introduced and demonstrated. Initial orbital states are generated using a rate-aware constrained admissible-region multiple-hypothesis …

Tools that just pull up whole, complicated company policy documents often don't help people find the specific answers they need. This new technology is a system for understanding and analyzing policies that works in two ways.

A "Reactive" Mode acts like a Q&A tool. It uses advanced technology (retrieval-augmented generation) to break down policies into small, searchable pieces. This allows the system to give direct answers with citations and even run simulations to show what happens in different situations based on the rules.

A "Proactive" Mode is an automated agent that constantly checks support data to spot trends and see …

System For Determining Impact Orientation In A Drop Test Using An Acoustic Trigger, Eddy Liu, Max Chen, Kigo Chen, David Huang Jan 2026

System For Determining Impact Orientation In A Drop Test Using An Acoustic Trigger, Eddy Liu, Max Chen, Kigo Chen, David Huang

Defensive Publications Series

Determining a device's impact orientation during randomized drop tests can present challenges, as methods relying on internal accelerometers can be less reliable in some scenarios involving rotation and intermediate collisions. A system can utilize an external acoustic trigger to initiate data capture. For example, an optical sensor, such as an infrared gate, may be positioned in a drop apparatus to detect a falling device under test (DUT) and prompt an acoustic emitter to produce a specific audio tone. A software application on the DUT can use the device's microphone to detect this tone, which can serve as a temporal marker …

Uplink Latency Reduction In Non-Terrestrial Networks Via Predictive Scheduling Request, Edison Chen Jan 2026

Uplink Latency Reduction In Non-Terrestrial Networks Via Predictive Scheduling Request, Edison Chen

Defensive Publications Series

Standard reactive scheduling request (SR) procedures in high-latency Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) cause uplink delays, as a user equipment (UE) must wait a full round-trip time (RTT) for an uplink grant after data becomes available. This is compounded for large data transfers, which may require two RTTs for SR and Buffer Status Report (BSR) cycles. This disclosure describes a proactive scheduling mechanism where the UE sends an SR in advance of data arriving in its buffer. Based on predicted traffic, informed by application-layer signaling or an on-device machine learning model, the SR is timed to ensure the uplink grant arrives just-in-time …

Introduction: Each year, millions of people experience recurrent diverticulitis episodes. Elective sigmoid colon resection reduces the risk of recurrence, but The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons recommends individualising surgical decisions based on the impact of the condition on a patient's quality of life (QoL). However, no threshold for QoL impairment has been established to guide decision-making, and evidence comparing elective colectomy with medical management in terms of QoL limitation is limited. To address these gaps and to guide treatment decision-making, we designed the Comparison of Surgery and Medicine on the Impact of Diverticulitis (COSMID) trial. The COSMID trial is …

Knowledge workers in enterprise environments can face challenges when resolving complex inquiries, as they may need to manually parse and synthesize information from multiple historical precedents. Existing retrieval systems may identify relevant cases but can leave the cognitive burden of synthesis to the user. Systems are described that can automate the synthesis of insights. For example, a system may use a semantic similarity model to retrieve a set of procedurally analogous historical cases from a data repository. A generative synthesis module could then compile data from these retrieved cases into a structured prompt for a large language model. The model …

Wide variation of responses to identical stimuli presented to genetically inbred mice suggests the hypothesis that stochastic non-genetic variation, such as in chromatin state or enhancer activity during neurodevelopment, can mediate such phenotypic differences. However, this hypothesis is largely untested since capturing pre-existing molecular states requires non-destructive, longitudinal recording. Therefore, we tested the potential of Calling Cards (CC) to record transient neuronal enhancer activity during postnatal development in mice, and thereby associate such non-genetic variation with a subsequent phenotypic presentation - degree of seizure response to the pro-convulsant pentylenetetrazol. We show that recorded differences in enhancer activity at 243 loci …
