Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE: Few dementia caregivers have access to evidence-based support programs. Web applications (app) may address this gap. Plans4Care, a web app, provides caregivers with on-demand personalized solutions to address care challenges. We present results of a proof-of-concept study and describe a trial protocol to test efficacy.

METHODS: To use Plans4Care, caregivers respond to brief onboarding questions, assess dementia patients' cognitive function, identify care challenges, and generate "action plans" (personalized strategies). Telehealth sessions with dementia-trained care advisors are available. A proof-of-concept study evaluated a clickable prototype using standardized technology scales to determine if >75 % scored positively on four criteria (acceptability, …

Paywall Payout: A Three Year Review Of The Soml Open Article Fund, Aidy Weeks Jan 2026

Paywall Payout: A Three Year Review Of The Soml Open Article Fund, Aidy Weeks

Library Faculty Research

In 2022, the School of Medicine Library launched the Open Article Fund as a way to support faculty, residents, and fellows with their scholarly activities when submitting open access publications that would otherwise be ineligible for funding through the University Libraries fund which limited recipients to tenure-track faculty. After feedback from the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine Office of Research, The pilot fund was structured after the University Libraries funds with some modifications including awarding $2,000 instead of $1500 towards a publication, allowing for publications in hybrid journals, and requiring multi-author team submissions. The fund was initially supported by $30,000 …

Mayhem, Magic, Movement, And Methods: Teaching And Learning About Hearing And Listening, Tara Brabazon

Fast Capitalism

This is an article about a course, but shadows a much wider history of online education, media literacies and sonic media.[1] Teaching research methods is difficult.[2] Students hate it. Staff tolerate it. Occasionally, there is a comrade or sister who demonstrates as much commitment to Marxist and feminist research methods as Paris Hilton does to shopping, but most of the time it is hard to summon enthusiasm. Students approach these often mandatory courses with the excitement of a dental appointment. Similarly, academic staff justify such courses as being good for students, like regular flossing. I had a problem. I had …

Multimedia-Based Interventions To Improve Science Learning Outcomes For Deaf Students At Wangsel Institute For The Deaf., Cheten Tshering Mr., Tshering Wangchuk

Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

Efforts have been made to ensure inclusive learning opportunities for all students, including those from diverse backgrounds. One key strategy to enhance children’s learning and academic performance involves the thoughtful selection and application of instructional tools tailored to meet learners' specific needs. This study examines the impact of multimedia-based instruction on science achievement among deaf students at Wangsel Institute for the Deaf in Bhutan. Using a quasi-experimental design, the research compared pretest and post-test results between a control group and an experimental group. Data analysis included descriptive statistics (t-test) and ANCOVA. The findings indicated a statistically significant differences (p = …

Conflict And Community Building In Waste Water Management: The Case Of Azrou Morocco, Jack V. Kalpakian Jan 2026

Conflict And Community Building In Waste Water Management: The Case Of Azrou Morocco, Jack V. Kalpakian

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

Climate change is forcing Morocco to institute a wide program of wastewater treatment. Despite legal and bureaucratic problems, the water is being reused directly or indirectly. But the construction of water treatment plants is leading to conflicts with farmers that depended on the untreated water and the use of treated water for green spaces and parks is also often viewed with suspicion. Using the case of the Azrou water treatment plant, this paper argues that while the infrastructure and technical adjustments to climate change have been effective, a gap in understanding between the water managers and the public they serve …

Sign Story: Shifting Discourse On ‘Signage’ In Progressive Grocer Magazine, Or The Supermarket Under Late Capitalism, Mario Rodriguez Jan 2026

Sign Story: Shifting Discourse On ‘Signage’ In Progressive Grocer Magazine, Or The Supermarket Under Late Capitalism, Mario Rodriguez

Fast Capitalism

The supermarket industry is an “industry in flux.”[1] Modern grocery stores face multinational opposition at the millennium paralleling the extinction of neighborhood “mom-and-pop” stores with the rise of chain stores of the late 19th century (Strasser, 1989). With this large-scale reorganization of the grocery store industry comes a concomitant restructuring of what constitutes a grocery store itself—its architecture, services, and signs. The following study analyzes the evolving discourse on signs—or ‘signage,’ as it is called in the industry—in Progressive Grocer magazine over the 12-year period from 1996 to 2008. First, signs are contextualized in terms of the history of in-store …

Reflections On Leaving Facebook, David W. Hill Jan 2026

Reflections On Leaving Facebook, David W. Hill

Fast Capitalism

On 13 August 2009 I deactivated my Facebook social networking account. The world remained on its axis but Facebook’s slightly sinister prediction that my friends would miss me turned out to be correct. A torrent of e-mails and text messages arrived in the days following, asking where I had gone. Many asked me to justify why I left, some out of curiosity and some out of shock. Besides the mundane reasons — such as the ongoing project of limiting procrastination — two substantial arguments developed to explain my deactivation. These relate to voyeurism and the extension of advanced capitalism into …

The Islamic Methodology For Limiting Cognitive Biases, Arwa Bint Abdullah Suliman Al-Mazyad

UB Journal for Humanities

This research, titled “The Islamic Approach to Minimizing the Negative Effects of Cognitive Biases”, explores cognitive biases from an Islamic perspective, addressing their definitions, causes, and types. It examines how such biases impact perception, decision-making, and understanding of reality, and how Islamic teachings provide an integrated framework to address them through ethical, educational, and spiritual principles. The study employs a descriptive method to present the phenomenon, an analytical method to examine its implications, and an inductive approach to trace Islamic responses to cognitive distortions, drawing upon Quranic verses, Prophetic traditions, and scholarly insights. The findings indicate that Islam lays a …

Place Personality And User Behaviour: Insights From Cairo’S Streets, Sara Sabahy, Zeina Elzein, Doaa Abouelmagd

HBRC Journal

A place’s personality is beyond the sum of its characteristics. It’s how people perceive it on a human level, hoping for a better understanding and seeking connection. This study aims to understand how people connect with public spaces to enhance the quality of urban life.

A place’s personality extends beyond its physical attributes—it reflects how people emotionally perceive and connect with it. This study investigates the relationship between the perceived personality of urban streets and users’ behaviour to enhance the quality of urban life in Cairo. Focusing on Downtown Cairo and New Cairo, it addresses a gap in destination personality …

Roads To Regulation: A Discussion On Non-State Armed Groups' International Health Law Obligations, Eric Fogle Jan 2026

Roads To Regulation: A Discussion On Non-State Armed Groups' International Health Law Obligations, Eric Fogle

Journal of Law and Health

Non-state actors can look and operate like governments, yet without formal statehood, they exist in a regulatory gray area. Non state actors play an increasingly influential role in international law, yet they remain largely unregulated. This paper examines non-state actors as a class, with particular attention to non-State armed groups (NSAGs), and analyzes the regulatory gap they occupy specifically within international health law. The paper first surveys the rise, diversity, authority, and legitimacy of non-state actors in relation to States, highlighting their growing involvement in governance functions traditionally reserved for States. This paper then introduces the World Health Organization (WHO) …
