Two Faces Of Mitral Stenosis: Uncovering Structural And Hemodynamic Signatures Of Rheumatic And Mitral Annular Calcification-Induced Disease, Mohammad S. Hashemi, Peter Abdelmaseeh, Atif Nehvi, Gregg S. Pressman, Arash Kheradvar

Einstein Health Papers

BACKGROUND: Mitral annular calcification (MAC) is common and associated with increased cardiovascular risk and, when severe, mitral stenosis (MS). MAC-related MS differs anatomically and hemodynamically from rheumatic MS (RMS), challenging standard diagnostic methods. This study compares structural and flow characteristics, including  kinetic energy losses, across MAC-related MS, RMS, and normal mitral valves, and evaluates the applicability of conventional diagnostic metrics in MAC.

METHODS: Three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiographic data sets from 70 patients (22 normal mitral valves, 26 RMS valves, 22 MAC valves) were used to obtain linear, area, and volumetric measurements for valve comparison. Representative valves from each group were converted …

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

The recent spillover of highly pathogenic influenza A/H5N1 (HPAI-H5N1) viruses to cattle, other mammals, and humans poses a major risk to animal and human health. Virus adaptation to new species highlights the need for effective vaccines for animals and humans. We recently developed a rabies virus-based H5 vaccine encoding the HPAI-H5 antigen and presenting it on the surface of the rabies virus particle. To test the immunogenicity and efficacy of the vaccine in eliciting systemic and mucosal immune response, we vaccinated mice intramuscularly or intranasally with either live or inactivated and adjuvanted vaccine. The vaccine elicited neutralizing antibodies against RABV …

Education Accountability Regarding Oral Contraceptives And Sugammadex, Hallianne Hobson Herndon, Terri M. Cahoon Feb 2026

Education Accountability Regarding Oral Contraceptives And Sugammadex, Hallianne Hobson Herndon, Terri M. Cahoon

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

Sugammadex is commonly used to antagonize neuromuscular blockade and has a clinically significant interaction with hormonal contraceptives by binding to plasma progesterone, reducing contraceptive efficacy and mimicking a missed dose. This case involved a healthy 21-year-old woman undergoing elective anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament repair whose only home medication was an oral contraceptive. She received midazolam prior to anesthesia assessment, limiting her ability to retain education, and counseling occurred at a suboptimal time without a support person present. Postoperative education was verbally relayed without standardized documentation or accountability. This project examined whether implementation of a standardized protocol regarding …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

KBG syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterised by developmental delay, characteristic facial features, macrodontia and skeletal anomalies, caused by mutations in the ANKRD11 gene. We report a 5.5-year-old Moroccan boy who presented in 2022 to a tertiary military teaching hospital in Rabat, Morocco, with psychomotor delay, autistic traits, epilepsy, bilateral hearing loss with chronic otomastoiditis and radiologically-detected macrodontia before clinical eruption, in whom artificial intelligence-assisted facial phenotyping suggested the diagnosis, subsequently confirmed by identification of a novel nonsense mutation (c.1977C>G; p.Tyr659Ter). Multidisciplinary management including antiepileptic therapy, speech therapy and audiological follow-up resulted in satisfactory seizure control and …

Fight For Your Right: An Analysis Of A Musician’S Ability To Terminate A Copyright Assignment Of A Music Recording, Ian Waldron Feb 2026

Fight For Your Right: An Analysis Of A Musician’S Ability To Terminate A Copyright Assignment Of A Music Recording, Ian Waldron

Journal of Intellectual Property Law

In 2019, musicians joined together to launch two separate lawsuits against Sony Music Entertainment (“Sony”) and Universal Music Group (“UMG”) after the record labels ignored the musicians’ copyright termination notices. Copyright termination is a powerful tool that allows the original owner of a work, under some circumstances, to regain possession years after they have assigned it to another party. To defend their actions, UMG and Sony countered that since the recordings were created under a record deal, they were works for hire and the musicians acted as employees. Therefore, under the record label’s theory, the musicians would have no ownership …
