Equal Chances Or Fewer Victims? Moral Judgments In Autonomous Vehicle Dilemmas, Alexander Matros, Eren Bilen, Leonid Matros Feb 2026

Equal Chances Or Fewer Victims? Moral Judgments In Autonomous Vehicle Dilemmas, Alexander Matros, Eren Bilen, Leonid Matros

Faculty Publications

We examine the moral dilemma of how autonomous vehicles (AVs) should be programmed to act in unavoidable crash scenarios involving trade-offs between saving one life and saving many. We report results from three experimental studies that investigate individuals’ preferences over alternative AV decision rules in stylized crash scenarios. Across designs, we find robust support for a probabilistic decision rule that assigns passengers and pedestrians equal ex ante chances of survival (a 50:50 rule). This preference persists across different framings and remains salient even when additional probabilistic options are introduced.

Development Of A Comfort Care Clinical Practice Guideline And Standardized Comfort Care Kits In Adult Home Hospice, Kelly Miller Feb 2026

Development Of A Comfort Care Clinical Practice Guideline And Standardized Comfort Care Kits In Adult Home Hospice, Kelly Miller

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project focused on the development and expert appraisal of a clinical practice guideline (CPG) to improve home-based comfort care in hospice settings. Terminally ill patients frequently experience distressing symptoms such as pain, dyspnea, and nausea, yet inconsistent symptom management and documentation practices persist across hospice care (Henson et al., 2020). A CPG was developed to evaluate a comfort care kit for patients. The CPG was independently reviewed by a three-member expert panel using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II (AGREE II) instrument, which consists of 23 items that are organized into …

The Racial Politics Of Early Dentistry And The Terrible “Toothache Blues”, Bronwen Mcveigh Phd Feb 2026

The Racial Politics Of Early Dentistry And The Terrible “Toothache Blues”, Bronwen Mcveigh Phd

Journal of the American College of Dentists

In interwar America, the relatively young profession of dentistry was developing rapidly. As the government, health institutions, and social organizers focused more intently on notions of national wellness, questions about how to achieve a healthy smile—and what a healthy smile should look like—proliferated. Groups like the National Dental Association worked to establish rigorous standards of technique, define ethical behavior, and encourage dentists to develop business acumen, yet the surprising proliferation of blues songs about dubious dentists tricking unassuming clients, or about fraught love affairs allegorized by disastrous dental exams, highlights the equivocal nature of many developments in early dentistry.

Examining Fort Vancouver Curatorial Practices: How Do Museums Interact With And Represent The Public?, Karryn Meharchand Pillay Feb 2026

Examining Fort Vancouver Curatorial Practices: How Do Museums Interact With And Represent The Public?, Karryn Meharchand Pillay

Dissertations and Theses

Historically, the work of curators has always been somewhat opaque and mysterious to the public, with knowledge of curatorial practices only being passed from mentor to student, creating a small elite of those in the know, which is something that has only begun to change in the modern era (Meyer-Krahmer 2015). So, if museum operations are not accessible to the public, what does that mean for communities whose culture and history are being presented by the museum? How are they meant to reclaim their cultural heritage? How are they supposed to approach conversations regarding misrepresentation in museum exhibits?

Through this …

The Dental Phantom As A Tool For Exploring Fear, The Face, And Dental Education, Christine Slobogin Phd Feb 2026

The Dental Phantom As A Tool For Exploring Fear, The Face, And Dental Education, Christine Slobogin Phd

Journal of the American College of Dentists

Dental phantoms have been used in dental education since the late nineteenth century. These pedagogical objects – particularly those from the first half of the twentieth century – have today enjoyed a resurgence of interest in the art and film worlds. After first outlining the history and pedagogical purposes of the dental phantom, this article examines what the artistic and filmic attractions to the aesthetics of these objects can tell us about fear, the mouth and the face, and dental education. How and why can a dental teaching tool be scary? Arriving at some answers to this question – reached …

Motivating Passion And Purpose In Grade Six Students Through Game-Based Learning, Violet H. Harada, Patricia Louis

Learning Hub

This article examines how a sixth-grade pathways course at Kamehameha Schools in Hawai‘i leveraged Game-Based Learning (GBL) and Indigenous knowledge to foster student agency, creativity, and environmental stewardship. Designed and taught by school librarian Patricia Louis with support from a multidisciplinary instructional team, the Nā Lawai‘a Hawai‘i (Fishing, Hawaiian Style) elective engaged students in researching the ‘Ama‘ama (Hawaiian striped mullet) and the ecological challenges it faces, then translating their learning into the design of a board game, ‘Ama‘ama Escape. Grounded in constructivist, learning-by-making principles, the course guided students through an iterative design process that included inquiry, collaboration, prototyping, and playtesting. …

How Principals Who Use Artificial Intelligence For Innovation Create Cognitive Equity While Principals Who Use Ai For Efficiency Create Cognitive Debt, Jethro Jones Feb 2026

How Principals Who Use Artificial Intelligence For Innovation Create Cognitive Equity While Principals Who Use Ai For Efficiency Create Cognitive Debt, Jethro Jones

Dissertations

This dissertation in practice examined whether a targeted professional learning   intervention could shift school leaders’ use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) from efficiency-oriented tasks toward innovation-oriented strategic problem solving. AI is typically adopted to accelerate existing routines, which can deepen “cognitive debt” by reinforcing ineffective practices rather than improving systems. This study advanced a “cognitive equity” frame, positioning AI as a tool that can expand principals’ cognitive capacity to address complex problems and lead adaptive change. Using a quasi-experimental, single-group design, the study evaluated a free, full-day AI for Innovation workshop, which emphasized foundational understanding of how AI tools work …

Introducing Safe-Ai: A Behavioral Framework For Managing Ethical Dilemmas In Ai-Driven Human Resource Practices, Rob E. Carpenter, Debaro Huyler, Sanket Patole, Rochell Mcwhorter

Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

Organizations increasingly deploy artificial intelligence (AI) in human resource (HR) decision processes to improve efficiency and strategic execution, yet ethical failures persist when principles remain decoupled from everyday workflow enactment. This paper addresses AI-ethics in HR practice by advancing a behavior-first premise: AI-ethics becomes durable organizational practice only when ethical intent is translated into observable routines and cues that employees can interpret as legitimate and consistently enforced. We introduce the Socially Aware Framework for Ethical AI (SAFE-AI), which integrates normative ethical reasoning (consequentialist and deontological logics), social information processing, and socially informed heuristics as a practical translation layer for HR …

Can Palm Logs Float? Evaluating The Physical Viability Of Raft Transport For Rapa Nui Moai, Carl Philipp Lipo, Terry L. Hunt Feb 2026

Can Palm Logs Float? Evaluating The Physical Viability Of Raft Transport For Rapa Nui Moai, Carl Philipp Lipo, Terry L. Hunt

Anthropology Datasets

Recent suggestions that palm log rafts may have transported moai statues on Rapa Nui require evaluation of whether fresh palm wood can provide sufficient buoyancy for multi-ton cargo. This analysis integrates experimental flotation tests, structural analyses of palm stem anatomy, and buoyancy calculations using modern palm analogs to reconstruct the extinct Rapa Nui palm. Fresh palm logs sink when placed in water because of their internal structure: stems consist of approximately 20% liquid by volume, contained within thousands of water-filled vascular tubes, surrounded by a thin, brittle cortex. This yields effective densities of 800-1,200 kg/m³ that approach or exceed seawater …

Critical Tourism Studies In Business Journals, Paolo Mura, Heather Jeffrey, Martin Sposato Feb 2026

Critical Tourism Studies In Business Journals, Paolo Mura, Heather Jeffrey, Martin Sposato

All Works

Business is commonly understood as a parent discipline of tourism research, making business journals essential for epistemological inquiry. This paper reviews tourism literature in business journals, analysing the presence of Critical Tourism Studies, which addresses limitations of management-oriented approaches. Our analysis reveals limited engagement with Critical Tourism Studies in business journals, only 27% of reviewed articles aligning with its tenets. We propose a framework for Critical Tourism Business Studies that identifies knowledge gaps and highlights future directions for scholars publishing tourism-related topics in business journals. This framework aims to bridge disciplinary gaps and enhance interdisciplinary research. The article contributes to …

Staff Education On Integrating Holistic And Herbal Therapies For Adults With Depression, Kettelene P. Mcmorris Feb 2026

Staff Education On Integrating Holistic And Herbal Therapies For Adults With Depression, Kettelene P. Mcmorris

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Adults with depression frequently use or inquire about holistic and herbal therapies; however, inconsistent and non-standardized staff education regarding the safe, evidence-based integration of these therapies may contribute to variable counseling practices and potential patient safety risks. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement project was to implement and evaluate a structured staff education intervention focused on integrating holistic and herbal therapies for adults with depression in an outpatient behavioral health practice. The practice-focused question examined whether staff education would improve staff knowledge related to commonly used holistic and herbal therapies and associated safety considerations. A …

Clinical Practice Guideline For Structured Communication In A Pediatric Outpatient Psychiatry, Stella Uzoamaka Ihesiaba Feb 2026

Clinical Practice Guideline For Structured Communication In A Pediatric Outpatient Psychiatry, Stella Uzoamaka Ihesiaba

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This doctoral project focused on developing and evaluating a clinical practice guideline (CPG) to address the lack of standardized interdisciplinary communication between psychologists and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) in a pediatric outpatient psychiatric setting. Inconsistent communication practices, including informal conversations, delayed documentation, and unstructured messaging, contributed to fragmented care and inefficient treatment coordination. To address this gap, an evidence-based, structured communication framework was developed to guide interdisciplinary collaboration. The guideline was developed using the Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice model and supported by a review of 14 evidence sources spanning Levels I to V of the literature. A four-member …

Citizen Perceptions Of Law Enforcement Use Of Facial Recognition Technology, Helena Raye Weiskittel

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Use of facial recognition technology (FRT) in criminal investigations is potentially controversial in terms of privacy rights. This study involved examining public perceptions regarding police officers’ use of FRT in criminal investigations. A qualitative research method and descriptive design were used to explore participants’ perceptions of FRT. The procedural justice theory and a pragmatic paradigm guided this general qualitative research. The target population for the study was 10 participants from the United States. Results of this study showed privacy concerns involved a lack of public anonymity and the risk of data breaches due to facial recognition. This shows use of …

Staff Education Of Fall Prevention Intervention In The Emergency Department, Jonathan Jaramillo Feb 2026

Staff Education Of Fall Prevention Intervention In The Emergency Department, Jonathan Jaramillo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Patient falls remain a significant patient safety concern in emergency departments (EDs) despite the routine use of fall risk screening tools. At the project site, continued fall events suggested a gap in staff knowledge, confidence, and consistent application of evidence-based fall prevention strategies. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement project evaluated whether a targeted staff education intervention would improve ED nursing staff's knowledge, confidence, and intent to identify fall risk, implement prevention strategies, and respond appropriately to patient falls. Guided by the Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate (ADDIE) instructional design model, an evidence-based educational intervention was developed …

Staff Education To Improve Accuracy And Consistency Of Depression Assessment Through Structured Education On The Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale, Janenita D. Chukwu Feb 2026

Staff Education To Improve Accuracy And Consistency Of Depression Assessment Through Structured Education On The Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale, Janenita D. Chukwu

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Inaccurate and inconsistent administration and interpretation of standardized depression screening instruments can destabilize clinical accuracy and patient safety. Despite routine administration of the ZSDS during nursing intake, informal observation and documentation review indicated a gap in nurses' understanding of how to compute raw scores, convert them to index scores, and define the severity levels. The aim of the project was to determine whether a structured staff education intervention would enhance nurses' knowledge of ZSDS administration, scoring, and interpretation. Informed by the Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice model, an educational intervention based on existing evidence on the accuracy and implementation fidelity of …

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose As A Mucoadhesive Polymer In Ethanol-Free Buprenorphine Gel For Neonatal Sublingual Delivery, Sanskruti Dave, Viren Soni, Samarth A. Shah, Walter K. Kraft, Gagan Kaushal Feb 2026

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose As A Mucoadhesive Polymer In Ethanol-Free Buprenorphine Gel For Neonatal Sublingual Delivery, Sanskruti Dave, Viren Soni, Samarth A. Shah, Walter K. Kraft, Gagan Kaushal

College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers

Buprenorphine (BUP) is widely used in the treatment of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS). However, the most compounded formulation contains 30% ethanol, despite regulatory and clinical concerns regarding ethanol exposure in pediatric patients. Thus, this research aimed to develop an ethanol-free sublingual (SL) gel formulation of BUP that would be safe, stable, and suitable for NOWS. Multiple polymers were screened as gelling agents, with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) emerging as the ideal base polymer for the formulation due to its optimal pH, rheological characteristics, and stability. The formulated gels were stored at room temperature and refrigerated conditions for 30 days and …
