Collaboration Among Ngos In Central Minnesota, Brigid Smith Dec 2021

Collaboration Among Ngos In Central Minnesota, Brigid Smith

CSB and SJU Distinguished Thesis

Collaboration is one strategy that organizations can use to confront various challenges and innovate their programming and services. Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in particular face many obstacles, including the need to meet a variety of demands with a limited number of resources. Although these organizations are increasingly turning towards collaboration to resolve these issues, it is still unclear what exactly motivates NGOs to work together. In this project, I use semi-structured interviews and a survey to investigate why NGOs collaborate in Central Minnesota. Based on a network and qualitative analysis, I identify the most important factors discussed by NGO leaders. Based …

The Needs, Challenges And Prospects Of Maritime Education And Training In Georgia, George Gabedava, Guram Kakabadze

International Maritime Lecturers' Association (IMLA) 2021 Joint Conference With IMEC32, ICERS15 and INSLC21

Georgia is a maritime country. It has been associated with the sea since ancient times, and therefore maritime education in the country has existed for more than seven decades. Even today, highly trained maritime specialists graduated from the maritime institutions of Georgia continue to work successfully on ocean-going vessels flying under the Georgian flag and the flags of many other countries. About 80 to 90 percent of maritime accidents are attributable to human error. Hence it is important that seafarers be well educated and trained, able to understand and execute commands, manage risks, and solve problems in order to ensure …

When Admiration Turns To Obsession: A Case Study On Taylor Swift Fan Theories, Kendall Resnick

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This research uses a qualitative content analysis of Taylor Swift fan theory TikToks to determine the personal benefits of the development of celebrity fan theories. Findings indicate three main themes – a sense of community, a knowledge of secret information, and a perceived closeness to the celebrity – that serve to explain the motivation behind this behavior. In addition, this study identifies a connection between celebrity parasocial relationships and conspiracy theories. The results of this study suggest that further research should examine how celebrity parasocial relationships might lead to the development of a new category of conspiracy theories.

Faculty Research 2021

Mechanical signals from the extracellular microenvironment have been implicated in tumor and metastatic progression. Here, we identify nucleoporin NUP210 as a metastasis susceptibility gene for human estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer and a cellular mechanosensor. Nup210 depletion suppresses lung metastasis in mouse models of breast cancer. Mechanistically, NUP210 interacts with LINC complex protein SUN2 which connects the nucleus to the cytoskeleton. In addition, the NUP210/SUN2 complex interacts with chromatin via the short isoform of BRD4 and histone H3.1/H3.2 at the nuclear periphery. In Nup210 knockout cells, mechanosensitive genes accumulate H3K27me3 heterochromatin modification, mediated by the polycomb repressive complex 2 …

The article delves into how and why the United States carries out its …

Defend Forward & Sovereignty: How America’S Cyberwar Strategy Upholds International Law, Elya Taichman Dec 2021

Defend Forward & Sovereignty: How America’S Cyberwar Strategy Upholds International Law, Elya Taichman

University of Miami Inter-American Law Review

To thwart a seemingly neve rending bombardment of cyberattacks, the U.S. Department of Defense recently implemented a new strategy – defending forward. This approach demands persistently engaging the enemy on a daily basis to disrupt cyber activity. Rather than waiting to be attacked, the United States is bringing the fight to the enemy. However, this strategy poses fascinating and complex questions of international law. In particular, because most defend forward operations fall within the gray zone of warfare, it remains unclear whether these operations violate the sovereignty of American adversaries or even third party nation states in whose cyberspace U.S. …

Atypical Sensory Processing And Semantic Language In Autistic Children, Charlene L. Cooper Dec 2021

Atypical Sensory Processing And Semantic Language In Autistic Children, Charlene L. Cooper

Theses and Dissertations

Autistic children demonstrate a constellation of traits with varying degrees of severity in areas including language differences, restrictive and repetitive behaviors, and sensory processing differences. However, the relationship between sensory processing and these other behaviors are not well understood especially their neurobiological underpinnings. Therefore, this research examined behavioral measures of semantic language, sensory traits, and associated brain networks in 20 autistic children (ages 6-11) and 22 typically developing (TD) age matched peers. Mann-Whitney U tests revealed a strong correlation between sensory traits and general composite and semantic language in both groups of participants. Sensory seeking traits were most significantly correlated …

Legal And Ethical Implications Of U.S. And Canadian Vaccine Contracts: The Impact Of Vaccine Nationalism On The Global Pandemic Response, Ryan S. Tahiri Dec 2021

Legal And Ethical Implications Of U.S. And Canadian Vaccine Contracts: The Impact Of Vaccine Nationalism On The Global Pandemic Response, Ryan S. Tahiri

University of Miami Inter-American Law Review

This note explores the COVID-19 vaccine contracts between the U.S. and Canada and the impact of these types of agreements on the global pandemic response. These “pre-purchases,” many of which were executed before the development of a vaccine, have afforded a select few nations the opportunity to stockpile vaccines, while other nations with fewer resources are unable to secure any doses. An effective method to counter the effects of the pandemic is the creation of a global vaccine network that provides equitable access to vaccine doses for nations in need. COVAX was launched to ensure that lower and middle-income nations …

Adolescence is a key developmental period in one’s life course; health-related behaviors of adolescents can be linked to lifelong consequences, which affect their future health. Previous studies highlight the role of family and its significant association with adolescents’ health. In East Asia and the Pacific, the Philippines is the only country that is showing an upward trend of teenage pregnancy while other countries in the region have declining teenage pregnancy rates. Against this backdrop, this study investigated the association between teenage pregnancy and family factors, specifically parent structure. Data for the study were extracted from the Philippine National Demographic and …

Evidence-Based Educational In Home Program To Improve Self-Management Adherence And A1c Levels For Patients With Diabetes, Garrett Blaker Dec 2021

Evidence-Based Educational In Home Program To Improve Self-Management Adherence And A1c Levels For Patients With Diabetes, Garrett Blaker

Dissertations

Background: Diabetes diagnosis rates continue to grow, affecting many patients, communities, and health care organizations. One of the greatest challenges faced by patients with diabetes is maintaining diabetes self-management activities including self-blood glucose monitoring, physical activity, a healthy diet, and daily foot checks in order to control their diabetes and reduce their A1c. Diabetic Medical Concepts (DMC) previously provided intermittent and inconsistent in-home diabetes self-management education. An in-home diabetes self-management education program, adherence system and A1c testing component was implemented among DMC's patients as part of a quality improvement project.

Aim: The aim of the quality improvement project was to …

Testing Peplau's Theory Of Interpersonal Relations In Nursing Using Data From Patient Experience Surveys, Thomas A. Hagerty Dec 2021

Testing Peplau's Theory Of Interpersonal Relations In Nursing Using Data From Patient Experience Surveys, Thomas A. Hagerty

Dissertations

Patients' experiences in hospitals are important indicators of quality. Patients' opinions about their experiences in hospitals are significantly associated with their opinions of those hospitals' nursing services. Nurses in the US have traditionally focused on patients' experiences, and Peplau's (1952/1991) theory of interpersonal relations is early evidence of that focus. This study tested Peplau's (1952/1991) theory of interpersonal relations in nursing using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on data from 12,436 patient experience surveys. Two hypotheses were supported: (a) patient experience data (i.e. responses on the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems - Hospital [HCAHPS] survey) collected from patients in …
