Rethinking The Rhetorical Dimensions Of Public Refusals, Tyler Stafford
Rethinking The Rhetorical Dimensions Of Public Refusals, Tyler Stafford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In this dissertation on rethinking the rhetorical dimensions of public refusals, I attempt to enhance the heuristic value of compositionist John Schilb’s neglected but promising concept of rhetorical refusal with (1) an amplification of his higher principle criterion using rhetorical studies of decorum and (2) the scholarly deployment of strategic silence, journalism ethics, controversy and melodrama, irony, and prophetic rhetoric. In so doing, I (1) endeavor to inspire cross-disciplinary dialogue between those who study rhetoric in communication departments and those who study rhetoric in English departments; (2) demonstrate analyses of rhetorical refusals that take us beyond the cases explored in …

Dysregulation in adipokine biosynthesis and function contributes to obesity-induced metabolic diseases. However, the identities and functions of many of the obesity-induced secretory molecules remain unknown. Here, we report the identification of leucine-rich alpha-2-glycoprotein 1 (LRG1) as an obesity-associated adipokine that exacerbates high fat diet–induced hepatosteatosis and insulin resistance. Serum levels of LRG1 were markedly elevated in obese humans and mice compared with their respective controls. LRG1 deficiency in mice greatly alleviated diet-induced hepatosteatosis, obesity, and insulin resistance. Mechanistically, LRG1 bound with high selectivity to the liver and promoted hepatosteatosis by increasing de novo lipogenesis and suppressing fatty acid β-oxidation. LRG1 …

Early to Middle Miocene sea-level oscillations of approximately 40–60 m estimated from far-field records are interpreted to reflect the loss of virtually all East Antarctic ice during peak warmth2. This contrasts with ice-sheet model experiments suggesting most terrestrial ice in East Antarctica was retained even during the warmest intervals of the Middle Miocene. Data and model outputs can be reconciled if a large West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) existed and expanded across most of the outer continental shelf during the Early Miocene, accounting for maximum ice-sheet volumes. Here we provide the earliest geological evidence proving large WAIS expansions occurred during …

Steps Beyond Risk Assessment In Qrm: Rbdm, The Next Horizon, Valerie Mulholland, Anne Greene, Martin J. Lipa
Level 3
The topic of Risk-based Decision Making (RBDM) was highlighted as one of these areas requiring clarification in the International Committee on Harmonisation (ICH) concept paper for the revision of Q9. This paper examines 5 key areas on RBDM identified in the concept paper, focusing on: What good risk-based decision making actually means, How QRM may improve decision-making and How risk-based decisions might be achieved. This was executed by reviewing peer-reviewed published research literature and examining best practices in other industries, with a view to initiating a dialogue which could help advance the questions posed. Based on this analysis, a list …

The Artemis Project: Exploring Mass Communication Utilizing A Visual Exploration Of Influential Imagery., Brooke K. Collins
Theses
Society struggles to have difficult conversations. Polite silence is often preferred to dredging up uncomfortable topics. This silence is deafening as the majority of Americans do not consider topics such as The American Sex Trafficking Crisis. In a post-pandemic world, how do we initiate difficult conversations in both digital forums and public domains? The Artemis Project seeks to visually explore this gap in conversation, undergoing an optical investigation of utilizing design and illustrative practices as tools for mass communication. This project conceptualizes the development and application of imagery to introduce a conversation, facilitating understanding and empathy. In short, The Artemis …

Analyzing The Arguments And Opinions Surrounding Space Privatization, Henry Yaeger
Theses
As space exploration technology advances and more private actors engage in independent space activities, national governments and international organizations need to reform and modernize their approach to regulating private space activities in order to better capture and distribute the benefits of those activities. This paper examines several disparate suggestions and ideas found in 38 articles ranging from current space policy literate to international treaties in order to generate four possible policy approaches to private space activities: the Status Quo, Self-Regulation, New International Treaties and Expanded Public-Private Partnership models. It then compares and contrasts these four alternatives to determine which can …
Limits On Parameter Estimation Of Quantum Channels, Vishal Katariya
Limits On Parameter Estimation Of Quantum Channels, Vishal Katariya
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The aim of this thesis is to develop a theoretical framework to study parameter estimation of quantum channels. We begin by describing the classical task of parameter estimation that we build upon. In its most basic form, parameter estimation is the task of obtaining an estimate of an unknown parameter from some experimental data. This experimental data can be seen as a number of samples of a parameterized probability distribution. In general, the goal of such a task is to obtain an estimate of the unknown parameter while minimizing its error.
We study the task of estimating unknown parameters which …
Quantum Field Theories, Topological Materials, And Topological Quantum Computing, Muhammad Ilyas
Quantum Field Theories, Topological Materials, And Topological Quantum Computing, Muhammad Ilyas
Dissertations and Theses
A quantum computer can perform exponentially faster than its classical counterpart. It works on the principle of superposition. But due to the decoherence effect, the superposition of a quantum state gets destroyed by the interaction with the environment. It is a real challenge to completely isolate a quantum system to make it free of decoherence. This problem can be circumvented by the use of topological quantum phases of matter. These phases have quasiparticles excitations called anyons. The anyons are charge-flux composites and show exotic fractional statistics. When the order of exchange matters, then the anyons are called non-Abelian anyons. Majorana …
An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Obstetric Racism And Postpartum Depression In Black Women, Miguel A. Claxton Iii
An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Obstetric Racism And Postpartum Depression In Black Women, Miguel A. Claxton Iii
University Honors Theses
Postpartum depression is the most common postpartum mood disorder, with 13% of new mothers reporting symptoms within the first year. Adverse birth outcomes, such as low birth weight and preterm birth co-index with the development of postpartum depression. This correlation is particularly alarming considering that Black women have about a 60% higher rate of preterm birth and an 88% higher rate of low birth weight infants than Caucasian women. By utilizing theories of stratified reproduction, necropolitics, and obstetric racism, this paper aims to situate postpartum depression in Black women as a psychological response to systems of medicolegal control and domination. …

Hajjajiyah Narrative Phrase In Diwan (In The Mirror Of The Letter) By The Poet Adib Kamal Al-Din, Baidaa Muhyi Al-Din
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Perhaps in the research, we are trying hard to study the argumentative narrative phrase in the poetic image, and to show the extent of the effectiveness of the pilgrims in narration, due to the absence of addressing this axis in most pilgrimage studies, which is its ability to prove that the poetic discourse possesses an argumentative characteristic that distinguishes it from the rest of the literary races by entering the world of the recipient and the influence In it and his conviction of the usefulness of his message while adopting the condensation, suggestion and symbolism, formative elements codify the dimensions …

The research followed an analytical descriptive approach in dealing with these grammatical compositions, in addition to a comparison held between the Arabic morphological theories to the contemporary Linguistic discourse. The research aims at crystallizing the concept of pragmatic mistake in order to reveal its roots in the inherited morphological theory and how such a mistake has been formed. The research is constituted of an introduction, then a pavement to the modern Arabic studies that describes the …
