Supplementing Traditional Learning With Interprofessional Simulation Training, Brandy L. Simpler, Kasey Chance, Jacquelyn Smith

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Background: Medical emergencies are an inevitable occurrence in healthcare. Basic life support (BLS) skills are renewed every two years and there is often an infrequent amount of exposure to these situations which may lead to an overall lack of adeptness among hospital employees (Anderson et al., 2021). Multiple studies have found that the implementation of interprofessional simulation training enhances clinical reasoning, improves knowledge and skills, and strengthens team dynamics (D’Cunha et al., 2021; Shastri et al., 2021; Fox et al., 2020). Shrivastava et al., 2020 discovered a significant improvement of patient outcomes after a simulation-based training curriculum was implemented.

How A 2 To 5-Year Experimental Lake Powell And Lake Mead Release Program Tied To Reservoir Inflows Can Be A Win For Adaptive Risk Management, Brittany Fager, Anabelle Myers, Erik Porse, David Rosenberg Feb 2026

How A 2 To 5-Year Experimental Lake Powell And Lake Mead Release Program Tied To Reservoir Inflows Can Be A Win For Adaptive Risk Management, Brittany Fager, Anabelle Myers, Erik Porse, David Rosenberg

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Lake Powell and Lake Mead are at risk of drawdown to their minimum power and dead pools in the next few years because current and proposed shortage and release operations tied to reservoir storage and sometimes prior natural flow cannot keep pace with U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s numerous scenarios of more volatile, declining, and longer-lasting periods of low flows. One experimental program to reduce risk can instead adapt reservoir releases to monitored changes in physical reservoir inflow and reservoir evaporation. First, stabilize reservoir storage by temporarily setting reservoir release to the physical reservoir inflow minus evaporation (the available water). Second, …

Journal of Public Affairs and Development

Fertility trends in the Philippines have decreased over the years, driven by improved implementation of family planning (FP) practices and programs. However, regional and urban-rural disparities remain evident. Based on the 2022 Philippine National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), the general fertility rate (GFR) in urban areas is 57 per 1,000 women aged 15–44 years, compared with 72 per 1,000 in rural areas. This study determined the factors affecting fertility rates in selected municipalities in the second to fourth-income classes, namely Candoni, Jamindan, Moalboal, Palapag, San Miguel, and Sibalom. It utilized a descriptive cross-sectional study design involving 180 women of …

Managing State-Owned University Student Dormitories In The Philippines: The Role Of Service Quality, Marc Immanuel G. Isip Feb 2026

Managing State-Owned University Student Dormitories In The Philippines: The Role Of Service Quality, Marc Immanuel G. Isip

Journal of Public Affairs and Development

State-subsidized student housing is generally left undeveloped, and only a few efforts focus on evaluating and improving service quality and living accommodation satisfaction in state-owned/managed dormitories in a sustainable, strategic manner. These student housing services are threatened by limited government funding and the challenges posed by the post-pandemic period. Inflation has prompted an increase in dormitory fees, but services remain generally affordable; however, higher fees have raised expectations for service quality. This paper aims to investigate the role of service quality in state-owned/managed university student housing services and explore how it influences residents’ satisfaction with living accommodations. Using Partial Least …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The bone marrow endosteum provides a robust source of bone-making osteoblasts by housing various types of osteoblast precursor cells, including endosteal stem cells expressing fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (Fgfr3) and their downstream progenitor cell populations. In fetal bone development, Dlx5 marks early perichondrial cells that populate the diaphyseal bone and marrow stroma in the postnatal stages. However, the location of Dlx5-expressing cells in the postnatal bone marrow and how they contribute to osteogenesis remain undefined. Here, we show that Dlx5

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Endosteal stem cells are a subclass of bone marrow skeletal stem cell populations that are particularly important for rapid bone formation occurring in growth and regeneration. These stem cells are strategically located near the bone surface in a specialized microenvironment of the endosteal niche. These stem cells are abundant in young stages but eventually depleted and replaced by other stem cell types residing in a non-endosteal perisinusoidal niche. Single-cell molecular profiling and in vivo cell lineage analyses play key roles in discovering endosteal stem cells. Importantly, endosteal stem cells can transform into bone tumor-making cells when deleterious mutations occur in …

We present the case of a seven-year-old fully immunized male who developed an intensely pruritic, generalized maculopapular rash that progressed to vesicles. The patient’s rash was initially diagnosed by his primary care provider as possible scabies and treated with topical permethrin. Our examination revealed a diffuse maculopapular and vesicular exanthem with lesions at various stages of evolution, eventually progressing to secondary cellulitis. The patient’s presentation, consistent with varicella (chickenpox), highlights the diagnostic challenges of breakthrough varicella infection and potential complications in fully vaccinated children. Thus, we highlight the importance of having a high clinical index of suspicion for varicella, even …

A National Uk-Wide Survey Of Tranexamic Acid Use In Vascular Surgery, K Atha, A Shah, J Fabes, K Bera

Peninsula Medical School

Background: Tranexamic acid (TXA) is widely used to reduce perioperative bleeding in several surgical specialties; however, its role in vascular surgery remains uncertain. Concerns regarding arterial, venous and graft thrombosis, together with limited and low-certainty evidence of efficacy, have contributed to variation in practice across the UK. According to the 2025 National Vascular Registry there were nearly 20,000 major vascular operations carried out across the four nations. The 2023 NHS Blood and Transplant audit found TXA uptake in vascular surgery to be low (26.5%) when compared with other specialties such as cardiac, orthopaedic and trauma surgery, which each had TXA …

Engineering Human Microphysiological Models To Investigate Bacterial Extracellular Vesicle–Driven Endothelial And Blood–Brain Barrier Dysfunction, Louis P. Widom Feb 2026

Engineering Human Microphysiological Models To Investigate Bacterial Extracellular Vesicle–Driven Endothelial And Blood–Brain Barrier Dysfunction, Louis P. Widom

Theses

Pathogenic bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs) are nanoscale particles derived from bacteria that contain pro-inflammatory cargo. During bacterial infections, BEVs provoke the host inflammatory response and may cause widespread damage. Furthermore, antibiotic treatment can boost BEV production and thereby increase the number of toxic signals traveling through the circulatory system. This is especially dangerous in brain blood vessels since evidence suggests that BEVs may destabilize the protective blood–brain barrier (BBB), resulting in neuroinflammation associated with cognitive decline and development of neurological disorders. Our understanding of BEV interactions with the host remains limited, necessitating the development of in vitro models to better …

Rewiring The Senses: Neural And Perceptual Adaptation Through Cultural Immersion In Chile, Alexa Castillo Feb 2026

Rewiring The Senses: Neural And Perceptual Adaptation Through Cultural Immersion In Chile, Alexa Castillo

University Honors Theses

This thesis explores how cultural immersion reshapes perception over time. Rather than focusing only on language acquisition, the project examines how sustained exposure to a new cultural and linguistic environment alters sensory processing, cognitive effort, and emotional experience. The study draws on cultural neuroscience and neuroplasticity research to frame immersion as a process of adaptive recalibration.

Over four weeks in Valparaíso, Chile, I documented daily changes in auditory processing, visual attention, emotional response, and social interpretation. Journal entries were analyzed using qualitative thematic coding and organized into five categories: language overload, cognitive effort, automaticity, anxiety/frustration, and belonging/comfort. Weekly intensity ratings …

What Constitutes Risk In Implementation Research? Perspectives From A Qualitative Key-Informant Study, Emmanuel K Tetteh, Gifty Aboagye-Mensah, Nwaliweaku Anidi, Elvin H Geng, Byron J Powell, Enola K Proctor, Mark D Huffman, Alison L Antes

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: As implementation research increasingly occurs within routine care settings, determining what constitutes minimal risk is critical to ensuring that ethical oversight is appropriate and proportional. Current regulatory definitions often do not reflect the unique features of implementation studies, including implementation strategy-related risks and system-level effects. Yet, little empirical evidence exists on how researchers themselves interpret minimal risk in this context.

METHODS: We conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with 11 key informants, including investigators with experience in domestic and global implementation research. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling. Interviews explored how participants interpret the concept of minimal risk, identify risk-related concerns, …

Addressing Health Inequities For People With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities In The Hospital Through Partnerships In Nurse Training, Suzannah Iadarola, Amanda Laprime, Samantha Hochheimer, Tabby Anvari, Carrie Baker, Jacqueline Goodman

Developmental Disabilities Network Journal

People with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD) deserve the same access to quality healthcare yet are at increased risk of medical and/or psychiatric conditions as compared to the general population. Patients with IDD have less health satisfaction, shorter life expectancy, less access to preventative care, higher chronic health conditions, overuse of certain medications, and increased mortality. This population and their caregivers report high levels of dissatisfaction with emergency/inpatient care. Nurses also express frustration with lack of training, limited resources, and competing priorities.

We developed the Advancing Supportive Care through Education for Nurses on Disability (ASCEND) Program, to build the capacity of inpatient/Emergency …
