Creating Climate Healthy Work Environments In Healthcare, Janice E. Hawkins, Beth Tremblay Feb 2026

Creating Climate Healthy Work Environments In Healthcare, Janice E. Hawkins, Beth Tremblay

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Climate change is not only detrimental to our planet but poses a serious threat to human health. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2021) named climate change the greatest threat to human health and, by 2030, predicts an increase of 250,000 deaths each year from climate-related causes. Incongruent with our pledge to do no harm, healthcare industries are significant contributors of carbon emissions that cause climate change. Healthcare systems produce almost 5% of heat-trapping gases released into the atmosphere. Hospitals generate 20 pounds of waste per patient each day, equating to 5 million tons of waste annually (Practice Greenhealth, 2022). As …

Using The Misinformation Exposure-Trust Framework For Audience Segmentation: Predicting Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among U.S., Jing Zeng, Jinxu Li, Nan Yu, Xi Cui, Anli Xiao Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

This study examines whether individuals’ exposure to and trust in COVID-19 vaccine misinformation can be used to segment audiences and explain variations in vaccine hesitancy and health beliefs. Using k-means clustering, a survey of 819 U.S. college students (March–May 2021) identifies four subgroups based on combinations of high or low misinformation exposure and trust: misinformation-shielded (low exposure, low trust), misinformation-vulnerable (low exposure, high trust), misinformation-resistant (high exposure, low trust), and misinformation-accepting (high exposure, high trust). These subgroups differ significantly in political ideology, vaccine hesitancy, and health beliefs. The misinformation-shielded subgroup reports more liberal views, lower hesitancy, and higher perceived efficacy, …

Institutionalizing A Culture Of Respect For Teaching And Professional Faculty, Laura E. Sponsler

Higher Education: Faculty Scholarship

The University of Denver has made great strides in improving faculty work and culture with the creation of full time non-tenure track lines – the Teaching and Professional Faculty. In 2015, DU’s faculty senate and Board of Trustees approved and created professional pathways with promotion, longer term contracts, and defined responsibilities for Teaching and Professional Faculty. Compared to other universities and colleges, our current strengths include multi-year contracts, participation and leadership in university governance, opportunities for advancement and promotion, and collegiality amongst faculty members.

This white paper serves to examine the institutionalization of these lines and the current status of …

Exosome Engineering For Blocking Gut Dysbiosis And Inducing Cell Death Mechanisms In Glioblastoma Multiforme, Ahalya Muraleedharan, Karthik Rangavajhula, Swapan K. Ray Feb 2026

Exosome Engineering For Blocking Gut Dysbiosis And Inducing Cell Death Mechanisms In Glioblastoma Multiforme, Ahalya Muraleedharan, Karthik Rangavajhula, Swapan K. Ray

Faculty Publications

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most lethal primary brain tumor in adults. Emerging evidence endorses that gut dysbiosis contributes to GBM progression through the gut–brain axis (GBA), promoting inflammation and therapeutic resistance via abnormal short-chain fatty acid production and cytokine dysregulation. Exosomes, naturally occurring nanovesicles (30–150 nm), offer promising therapeutic potential due to their blood–brain barrier permeability, biocompatibility, and versatile cargo capacity. This review examines exosome engineering strategies for dual targeting: inhibiting alterations in gut microbiome and inducing regulated cell death mechanisms such as apoptosis and ferroptosis in GBM. We describe exosome engineering with detailed focus on cargo loading approaches …

Egain Tube Memristors Offering Reliable Switching On A Biological Time Scale, Yuriy V. Pershin, Liya Patel, Bapi Bera, Doug Aaron, Stephen A. Sarles

Faculty Publications

Memristive devices have been considered promising candidates for nature-inspired computing and in-memory information processing. However, experimental devices developed to date typically show significant variability and function at different time scales than biological neurons and synapses. This study presents a memristive device comprised of liquid-metal eutectic gallium indium (EGaIn) contained within a mm-scale tube that operates via a bulk, voltage-dependent switching mechanism and exhibits distinct unipolar resistive switching characteristics that occur on a biological time scale (tens of milliseconds). The switching mechanism involves voltage-controlled growth and dissolution of an oxide layer on the surface of the liquid metal in contact with …

The Culture Cure: Behavioral Supervision And The Regulation Of Financial Institutions, David B. Lourie Feb 2026

The Culture Cure: Behavioral Supervision And The Regulation Of Financial Institutions, David B. Lourie

Mercer Law Review

This Article advances a normative claim: U.S. financial regulators must move beyond primarily adversarial, enforcement-driven models and adopt behavioral supervisory tools—particularly elements of culture assessments—to proactively help guide ethical firm conduct and mitigate systemic risk. Importantly, the proposal here is incremental and resource-efficient. Many recommendations place the onus on firms to assess and demonstrate their culture, while regulators set expectations, review outputs, and selectively verify findings. The framework proceeds in progressive stages—beginning with voluntary, partnership-based initiatives, moving toward light-touch integration within existing examinations, and scaling only where persistent governance weaknesses or systemic risks warrant closer attention. This tiered approach reflects …

Design And Control Of A Multi-Modal Electromagnetic Floor Array For Foot-Based Human Locomotion And Stabilization In Microgravity, Aryan Anand Feb 2026

Design And Control Of A Multi-Modal Electromagnetic Floor Array For Foot-Based Human Locomotion And Stabilization In Microgravity, Aryan Anand

Electrical Engineering Theses

Long-duration living and working in microgravity creates everyday mobility problems such as drifting, loss of stable footing, higher effort to move, and difficulty doing routine tasks safely. Many solutions have been proposed in literature, including handrails, restraint systems, and concepts for artificial gravity using rotation. Artificial gravity could improve comfort, but it is complex to build and operate for large spacecraft, especially when future missions may include not only trained astronauts but also common people. With companies like SpaceX pushing toward large-scale travel and long-term settlement goals, there is a need for simpler mobility support technologies that can work inside …

Requesting Less, Winning More: A Plaintiff Strategy To Eliminate Low-Value Anchors, Emily V. Shaw, Jade E. Larson Feb 2026

Requesting Less, Winning More: A Plaintiff Strategy To Eliminate Low-Value Anchors, Emily V. Shaw, Jade E. Larson

Mercer Law Review

Picture this: You are a plaintiffs’ lawyer representing a permanently injured client in a high-stakes lawsuit. You think you can earn millions of dollars for your client based on their injuries—but something is holding you back: your client’s past medical bills. To date, she has only had to pay around $20,000. You worry that this fact might make your request for several million dollars in non-economic damages seem excessive to a jury. So, you make a plan: on the eve of trial, you withdraw your request for economic damages and stick to only requesting non-economic damages in the millions. There …

Mergers And Cooptive Acquisitions, Alexandros Kazimirov Feb 2026

Mergers And Cooptive Acquisitions, Alexandros Kazimirov

Mercer Law Review

A new wave of emerging companies developing foundation models has unleashed fierce competition in generative artificial intelligence. These emergents have significant innovation capabilities threatening incumbent tech companies. To protect themselves, incumbents have responded by partnering with leading product developers and subsuming smaller startups through quasi‑mergers.

To determine whether quasi‑mergers are cooptive acquisitions, this Article scrutinizes the Google–Character, Microsoft–Inflection, and Amazon–Adept transactions. These case studies describe the deployment of acquired assets before and after the merger and explore their potential effects. However, the analysis is plagued by the uncertainty inherent in nascent competition. Consequently, through contextual comparisons of circumstantial evidence like …

Reporting Workplace Violence: Why Is It A Challenge?, Rebekah Powers, Carol Boswell Feb 2026

Reporting Workplace Violence: Why Is It A Challenge?, Rebekah Powers, Carol Boswell

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA, n.d.) defines workplace violence to include "any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site.” Workplace violence is a developing challenge within health care settings following the adversities encountered with behavioral issues acknowledged after the pandemic. Workplace violence includes physical episodes, verbal episodes, threats, and sexual harassment experiences, yet remains underreported (NIOSH, 2020). Nurses and nurse aides are two groups who are at the highest risk of becoming victims of violence due to their involvement with direct patient care. An acute care …

The Northeast Snow Survey (NESS) Feasibility Study was launched to address a critical gap in snowpack and weather monitoring across the northeastern United States. Unlike the western U.S., which benefits from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Snow Telemetry (SNOTEL) network, the Northeast lacks a coordinated, automated, real-time snow monitoring system—particularly at higher elevations where snowpack dynamics most strongly influence flooding, water supply, ecosystems, outdoor recreation, and working lands.

Funded through the FY2023 federal omnibus bill, the NESS Feasibility Study includes two phases: Phase 1–the content of this report–focused on interest holder engagement and …
