Summary
Background
Breast cancer is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity among females worldwide. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023, we provided an updated comprehensive assessment of the epidemiological trends, disease burden, and risk factors associated with breast cancer globally, regionally, and nationally from 1990 to 2023.Methods
Breast cancer incidence, mortality, prevalence, years lived with disability (YLDs), years of life lost (YLLs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) were estimated by age and sex for 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2023. Mortality estimates were generated using GBD Cause of …Institutional Cross-Ownership Of Peer Firms And Revelatory Price Efficiency, Young Jun Cho, Holly I. Yang, Yue Zhao

We argue that cross-ownership increases the amount of private information in stock price, enhancing the ability of stock price to provide feedback to managers. Consistent with this argument, we find greater cross-ownership heightens a firm’s investment-q sensitivity. This effect is stronger for firms with a lower propensity for voluntary disclosure and for firms whose managers hold less private information. Furthermore, we find that cross-ownership is negatively associated with the sensitivity of a firm’s investment to its peers’ stock prices. Additionally, cross-ownership has a stronger impact on the investment-q sensitivity when measured among investors who trade more actively the firm’s shares. …

PURPOSE: Medical physicists are essential healthcare professionals who bridge the gap between technology and patient care, particularly in radiation oncology and medical imaging. With the profession expanding its clinical and global roles, the need for competencies beyond technical expertise-such as communication, leadership, and cultural awareness-is increasingly evident. These competencies, commonly referred to as soft skills, are critical for patient-centered care but remain insufficiently integrated into formal education and training pathways. The aim of the present work was to identify soft skills relevant to medical physics practice and investigate where in a career they are acquired and used.

Breast surgery for aesthetic purposes, such as breast augmentation or breast reduction, and breast reconstruction after cancer treatment require an accurate structural (anatomical) and mechanical (functional) understanding of the breast components, including the fascial-ligamentous support system of the breast, to achieve optimal results. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive description of the mechanical behavior of the ligamentous and fascial connective tissues of the human female breast. Fasciae and ligaments obtained from 17 patients between 35 and 85 years of age who were undergoing mastectomy and three female cadavers were tested. Uniaxial tensile tests were conducted, and three constitutive models …
Disciplining Mechanisms: Governing Data Markets With Competition And Regulation, Peter Ormerod
Disciplining Mechanisms: Governing Data Markets With Competition And Regulation, Peter Ormerod

The past decade has witnessed conceptual renewals in both competition law and information privacy law. These regulatory movements—Neo-Brandeis antitrust and structural data governance—share the objective of recalibrating the balance of power between individuals and the massive data-processing firms that now dominate modern life.
Despite their common ends, policy interventions drawn from these schools of thought can work at cross purposes: competitive pressure can induce data exploitation, and privacy rules tend to benefit the largest firms.
This Essay exposes the friction in their relationship and offers guidance on how to mediate their tension. Competition policy alone will prove ineffective at indirectly …

Necessity Or Preference? Navigating The Role Of Physical Presence In The Post-Pandemic Workplace, Shelby Wray
Cardozo Law Review
The COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally altered how society conceptualizes the spatial boundaries of the workplace, proving that businesses can operate effectively without requiring employees’ physical presence. As remote work gained legitimacy during the pandemic, longstanding assumptions about where jobs can be performed—and where legal protections apply—have come into question. In particular, the scope of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has become increasingly hazy, especially regarding when the ADA is triggered outside of the physical workplace.
Currently, there is a circuit split as to whether employees with disabilities are entitled to ADA protections for their commute to work. This Note addresses …

The growing global demand for energy and heightened environmental concerns have elevated the importance of solar energy harvesting in recent years. Parabolic trough collectors (PTCs) are widely utilized for capturing direct solar radiation; however, conventional PTC efficiency is limited by low convection heat transfer rate in the absorber section, which is then delivered to heat transfer fluid (HTF). This study numerically investigates the use of a threaded tube as a fluid flow disruption technique to enhance heat transfer rate within the absorber, with Reynolds numbers ranging from 4000 to 10,000. Three key geometric parameters of the thread: pitch (300, 150 …

Detecting financial crime is a complex challenge due to evolving criminal strategies and fragmented detection systems, particularly in the areas of money laundering and fraud. While it is easy to implement, traditional rule-based approaches lack adaptability to new threats, and machine learning models, though more effective, often function as opaque "black boxes," limiting their practical use in regulated domains like banking, where interpretability and accountability are essential. This research presents a novel framework that combines intrinsic and post-hoc XAI techniques to detect suspicious bank transactions. Intrinsic methods provide model-inherent transparency, while post-hoc methods offer behavior-level explanations, enabling robust cross-verification of …

As networks expand in size and complexity, coupled with an exponential increase in intrusions on network and IoT systems, this leads to traditional models failing to capture increasingly intricate correlations among network components accurately. Graph Convolution Networks (GCNs) have recently acquired prominence for their capacity to represent nodes, edges, or entire graphs by aggregating information from adjacent nodes. However, the correlations between nodes and their neighbours, as well as related edges, differ. Assigning higher weights to nodes and edges with high similarity improves model accuracy and expressiveness. In this paper, we propose the GCN-DQN model, which integrates GCN with a …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Underwater Acoustic Communication (UAC) has garnered significant attention due to its applications in marine science, defence, and exploration. With the vast majority of the Earth's surface covered by water, there is a growing demand for reliable and effective communication techniques in underwater environments. However, the underwater acoustic channel is the most challenging channel due to its harsh characteristics, which significantly hinder the reliability and performance of UAC systems. Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation has emerged as a promising solution for next-generation UAC systems to address high Doppler and high mobility scenarios. It has demonstrated tolerance to fast time-varying channel …

Risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic, is increasingly prescribed in pediatric patients with psychiatric disorders. It is primarily metabolized by CYP2D6 to 9-hydroxyrisperidone, an active metabolite associated with a higher risk of adverse effects. The CYP2D6*17 and *29 alleles are prevalent in individuals of African ancestry and less studied than variants found in European ancestry individuals. This knowledge gap contributes to differences in health outcomes in individuals of non-European origin. The primary objective of this study is to replicate recently identified risperidone-specific activity for the CYP2D6*17 and *29 alleles. During psychiatric hospitalization, CYP2D6 was genotyped as part of routine care. Remnant plasma …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Implementing user experience (UX) methodologies within government settings is both possible and powerful – but fraught with systemic and cultural complexities. This report presents insights from the redesign of a government intranet for a prominent Australian emergency services organisation, using a human-centred design approach grounded in the Double Diamond framework. The research reveals a series of challenges: bureaucracy, opinion bias, overwhelming content volume with minimal organisational value, a governance paradox where design rules are desired but selectively applied, a disconnect in engagement from key stakeholders, and the impact of a design by committee approach. While these challenges were significant, they …

Doctoral
Despite growing research on consumer food waste, existing efforts have fallen short of achieving meaningful reductions. This challenge has primarily been attributed to the complex behavioural and demographic diversity within populations, reflected in varying practices of food acquisition, storage, preparation, and disposal. In addition, there is a limited understanding of the broader impacts of discarded food, particularly the environmental, economic, and nutritional losses. This results in an oversimplified view of HFW and leads to less effective intervention strategies. An integrated assessment that incorporates environmental, nutritional, and economic consequences can provide a more holistic representation of the problem and support the …

We present the Plan for Robust and Accurate Potentials (PRAPs), a software package for training and using moment tensor potentials (MTPs) in concert with the Machine Learned Interatomic Potentials (MLIP) software package. PRAPs provides an automated workflow to train MTPs using active learning procedures, and a variety of utilities to ease and improve workflows when utilizing the MLIP software. PRAPs was originally developed in the context of crystal structure prediction, in which one calculates convex hulls and predicts low energy metastable and thermodynamically stable structures, but the potentials PRAPs develops are not limited to such applications. PRAPs produces two potentials, …

During the Second Industrial Revolution, the source of goods became more important than ever as railroads expediated travel and access to goods across the United States. Today, the United States is in the midst of its third industrial revolution, a digital revolution fueled by silicon and microchips. This digital revolution is unlike the previous two industrial revolutions because biometrics have become commodities. The technologies and goods coming out of the digital revolution are multifaceted. First, they provide a physical good through appliances that allow for communication and shopping, among other things, across geographic borders. Second, they function as a service …

Software Engineering In The Age Of Coding Agents: Failure Modes And Rejection Patterns, Mahd Mohd Hindi
Theses
This thesis investigates the real-world behavior of LLM-driven coding agents that generate code changes and submit pull requests (PRs) to public software repositories. As these tools evolve from autocomplete-style assistants into more autonomous agents, their contributions increasingly interact with socio-technical review processes (human reviewers, bots, CI/CD gates, and project norms). The thesis focuses on understanding why agent-generated PRs are accepted or rejected and what these outcomes reveal about current agent limitations in practical development workflows.
The main objective of this thesis is to systematically characterize rejection patterns and failure modes of agent-generated pull requests in real repositories. Specifically, the thesis …

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have improved outcomes across several cancers, yet many patients do not respond, highlighting the need for robust predictive biomarkers. Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS), ectopic lymphoid aggregates that support local antigen presentation and adaptive immune activation, have emerged as potential indicators of favourable prognosis and immunotherapy responsiveness. Methods: This review summarises current clinical and translational evidence examining the prognostic and predictive value of TLS in solid malignancies. Studies assessing TLS presence, organisation, and biological function were identified through searches of major scientific databases and evaluated with respect to their association with patient outcomes and responses to …

Thousand Hills Pet Resort Ada Compliant Access Ramp And Connecting Deck: Preconstruction Activities, Sonya Nahama Wijoyo
Construction Management
This paper presents the design and preconstruction of an ADA-compliant access ramp and connecting deck system for two mobile homes located at Thousand Hills Pet Resort. The primary objective was to enhance accessibility and safety for residents by providing code-compliant, durable, and functional access to the mobile homes on site. This project is interdisciplinary between construction management and architectural engineering. The project began with a site evaluation to assess existing conditions. Field measurements and site observation guided planning decisions and helped identify potential challenges. Following the site evaluation, the project proceeded into the design phase, where the ramp and deck …
