Energetic Diversity In Retinal Ganglion Cells Is Modulated By Neuronal Activity And Correlates With Resilience To Degeneration, Zelun Wang, Christopher Zhao, Shelly Xu, Minglei Zhao, Sean Mccracken, Rajendra S Apte, Philip R Williams

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Neuronal function requires high energy expenditure that is likely customized to meet specific signaling demands. However, little is known about diversity of metabolic homeostasis among divergently-functioning types of neurons. To this end, we examined retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), a population of closely related, yet electrophysiologically distinct excitatory projection neurons. Using in vivo 2-photon imaging to measure ATP with single cell resolution, we identified differential homeostatic energy maintenance in the RGC population that correspond to distinct RGC types. In the presence of circuit activity, the most active RGC type (Alpha RGCs), had lower homeostatic ATP levels than other types and exhibited …

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing public health threat, and we currently lack accurate measures to track and trend this resistance. We developed the antibiotic resistance index (ARI) that aggregates resistance of Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) into a single metric which can be tracked across healthcare settings and over time.

METHODS: Culture data were collected from adult patients who met the CDC adult sepsis event criteria across 10 Barnes-Jewish HealthCare (BJC) hospitals between January 2018 and December 2023. An antibiotic's effective spectrum (AES) was calculated as the ratio of susceptible GNB to all identified GNB. The ARI was calculated as …

Systems and methods are disclosed for automatically identifying and initiating booking operations based on booking availability in online reservation platforms. An artificial intelligence (AI)-driven browser automation system monitors booking platforms/interfaces on websites to detect changes in availability and infer patterns associated with the release of new booking slots. Based on observed changes in availability over time, the system estimates when new availability is likely to become accessible. The system may periodically interact with the booking platform by navigating webpages, submitting forms, retrieving availability information, or analyzing page content. Once a predicted availability release time is determined/predicted, the system schedules and …

System For Automated Offer Generation With Transaction Classification And Interactive Guidance, Morgan Robins, Matthew Miceli Mar 2026

System For Automated Offer Generation With Transaction Classification And Interactive Guidance, Morgan Robins, Matthew Miceli

Defensive Publications Series

Systems for generating employment offers can involve manual data entry, which may be inefficient and introduce errors that can lead to delays in a hiring process. An automation framework may be integrated within a host platform, for example, an applicant tracking system, to programmatically generate employment offer documents. The system can ingest data from various sources, such as approved requisitions and candidate profiles, and can use configurable schemas to populate offer templates. The framework could also include a logic engine to classify a transaction type, a validation module to audit an offer against business rules, and an interactive interface to …

Selectively Insulated Fastener For Signal Transmission In A Conductive Housing, Josh Cheng, Zoro Chang, Averill Chang Mar 2026

Selectively Insulated Fastener For Signal Transmission In A Conductive Housing, Josh Cheng, Zoro Chang, Averill Chang

Defensive Publications Series

A system may utilize a structural fastener, such as a screw, as a dual-function component in compact electronic devices (e.g., smartphones, wearables, tablets). The fastener can be constructed from a conductive material and feature a selectively applied insulating coating on certain surfaces, for example, the threaded shank that engages with a conductive housing. The head of the fastener and a portion of its tip may remain uncoated to serve as external and internal electrical contact points, respectively. This configuration can allow the fastener to provide both mechanical fastening and an electrical conduit. This approach may facilitate a space-efficient, hidden wired …

Improving Collaboration Between Rns And Crnas For Informed Consents, Bella Warren, Aliyah Frutiger Mar 2026

Improving Collaboration Between Rns And Crnas For Informed Consents, Bella Warren, Aliyah Frutiger

Scholars Week

This presentation focuses on improving collaboration and communication between Registered Nurses (RNs) and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) to help with the informed consent process for epidurals during labor. It emphasizes that obtaining informed consent during active labor can impair the patient’s cognitive function from pain and stress. The research shows that earlier education, prior to severe pain, improves the quality of comprehension the patient has during the process. Therefore they will be able to fully understand the risks, benefits and alternatives to epidural anesthesia.

Shared Decision-Making For Patient Compliance, Lydia Vernon, Breanna Day Mar 2026

Shared Decision-Making For Patient Compliance, Lydia Vernon, Breanna Day

Scholars Week

This evidence-based project focuses on shared decision-making between the healthcare team and the patient. As well as how this implementation affects patient compliance. An issue of patient noncompliance was brought to attention, and this project will address how shared decision-making interventions can decrease patients’ feelings of overwhelmingness and underpreparedness, ultimately leading to better compliance after discharge. By focusing on these interventions, patient compliance increases, and as a result, patient outcomes benefit, and readmission rates decline.

Reducing Nurse Burnout, Kaylee R. Mofield Mar 2026

Reducing Nurse Burnout, Kaylee R. Mofield

Scholars Week

I presented an evidence-based project to a healthcare facility with interventions and a suggested policy change to help reduce nurse burnout. One suggested policy change I made was changing the staffing policy. Within this new policy I suggest that if the patient census was 25 patients it calls for 5 nurses, 17-20 patient calls for 4 nurses, 16 or less patients calls for 3 nurses; along with no calling off staff due to census but rather utilizing this staff as a float or resource nurse. Another suggestion I made was nursing leadership holding monthly “check-in” meetings separate from the monthly …

Implementing Labor Plans To Increase Labor Satisfaction, Allyson G. Johnson, Emma G. Hancock, Kinley Edwards

Scholars Week

This scholarly presentation examines the implementation of a standardized birth plan tool within a healthcare facility to improve maternal birth satisfaction. The project focuses on enhancing patient-provider communication, supporting shared decision-making, and ensuring that patient preferences are clearly documented and respected throughout labor and delivery. Findings suggest that integrating a structured birth plan tool may increase maternal satisfaction and promote more patient-centered obstetric care.

Reducing 30-Day Readmissions: Simplifying Discharge, Olivia Hibbs Mar 2026

Reducing 30-Day Readmissions: Simplifying Discharge, Olivia Hibbs

Scholars Week

Hospital readmissions within 30 days remain a major challenge for healthcare systems and are often linked to ineffective discharge communication and low patient health literacy. Improving discharge planning through simplified instructions, early education, and the teach-back method can help ensure patients understand their medications, follow-up care, and warning signs after leaving the hospital. Strengthening communication and care coordination during the transition from hospital to home may improve patient outcomes and reduce preventable readmissions.

Implementing A Health Literacy Assessment To Reduce Readmissions, Saiylor M. Beecham, Jewel Render, Bethany Pruitt Mar 2026

Implementing A Health Literacy Assessment To Reduce Readmissions, Saiylor M. Beecham, Jewel Render, Bethany Pruitt

Scholars Week

This presentation examines the impact of limited health literacy on patient outcomes, highlighting its role in medication errors and hospital readmissions. Grounded in Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory, it emphasizes the importance of implementing standardized, non-stigmatizing health literacy assessments to improve nurse-patient communication and patient understanding. Evidence-based strategies such as teach-back methods and plain language education are recommended to enhance patient safety and reduce preventable readmissions.

Oliver, Sarah Rush Mar 2026

Oliver, Sarah Rush

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

In my audio piece, Oliver, I wanted to tell the story of adopting my dog in a way that felt personal but still relatable. Soundwriting is an approach to writing that treats audio as a form of research, storytelling, and communication. It encourages writers to think about how sound shapes narrative, how voice carries meaning, and how small production choices affect the way listeners engage with a piece. This approach let me do something writing alone can’t always achieve: create a more immersive experience, where tone, pacing, and the natural qualities of voice help listeners feel present in the story.

Lawyers’, Law Professors’ And Law Students’ Free Speech: The Rule Of Law, Civility, And Informed Engagement, Eli Wald Mar 2026

Lawyers’, Law Professors’ And Law Students’ Free Speech: The Rule Of Law, Civility, And Informed Engagement, Eli Wald

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

The Article is organized as follows. Part I summarizes the traditional doctrine governing lawyers’ free speech, as well as the related doctrines of free speech, academic freedom, and tenure on college campuses. Part II explores twenty-first century developments that have thrown these old established doctrines into a state of flux.

Part III consists of three sections. The first suggests a new understanding of lawyers’ free speech, arguing that unprecedented twenty-first-century attacks on the rule of law justify recognizing a third, narrowly tailored restriction on lawyers’ free speech. In addition to the traditional restrictions grounded in protecting clients from lawyers’ …

Some Thoughts About Free Speech And Hostile Environment Discrimination On College Campuses, Mark Tushnet Mar 2026

Some Thoughts About Free Speech And Hostile Environment Discrimination On College Campuses, Mark Tushnet

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

Section I examines which kinds of utterances may be considered in determining whether a hostile environment exists, and how those utterances may be taken into account. After distinguishing between targeted utterances directed at an identifiable individual and general statements that disparage a racial or nation-origin group, this Section focuses on targeted utterances.

Section II then turns to general statements, typically of a more clearly political sort. After describing the quite limited nature under which individuals can be held liable for general statements, the Section argues that such statements can be part of the “dossier” relevant to hostile environment discrimination, …

Diversity Is More Than Non-Discrimination: Groupthink In Higher Education, Adam Goldstein, Sean Stevens, Nathan Honeycutt Mar 2026

Diversity Is More Than Non-Discrimination: Groupthink In Higher Education, Adam Goldstein, Sean Stevens, Nathan Honeycutt

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

In this Article, we seek to advance three claims. First, intellectual diversity is an essential bulwark against groupthink. Second, conflating intellectual diversity and non-discrimination undermines both concepts. Third, intellectual diversity should be pursued for its own sake and recognized as a separate and important goal of higher education.

We begin by sharing a set of definitions to identify the problem more precisely. Next, we examine the stakes of groupthink setting in. Then, we will introduce some of FIRE’s research on campus climate, which suggests the presence of an existing monoculture. Through the lens of a case study at Harvard …

Over the period of 2003-2021, 28 visits were made in early June and/or early August to hummingbird feeder locations along the shores of Mooselookmeguntic Lake, Rangeley Plantation, near Oquossoc, Franklin County, Maine, to capture, band and gather data on Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) on their breeding grounds. A total of 2,288 birds were banded along with 190 return captures made in years after banding. Adult males in Jun (n= 819) outnumbered adult females (n=672) by 1.22:1, while in August females (n=426) outnumbered males (n=122) by 3.49:1. Immature males in Aug (n=147) outnumbered immature females (n=102) by 1.44:1. The oldest recaptured …

An Adaptation Of The Yellow Wallpaper, Carla M. Sanz Mar 2026

An Adaptation Of The Yellow Wallpaper, Carla M. Sanz

FUSION

This project includes a 3-dimensional adaptation of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper," highlighting struggles with mental health and women’s empowerment amid patriarchal oppression. The use of a 3-D model of the story gives the viewer a visual representation of the narrator’s mental and physical decline. Representative elements of this decline include the use of a chest and a string stretched across the “ceiling” of the room, which visually convey the narrator’s feeling of being trapped. In addition, the room's tainted appearance and the visual of a woman in the walls allow the viewer to imagine the narrator's mental, emotional, …

The Story Behind The Waves: Effects Of Urbanization And Female Presence On Waving Behavior In Fiddler Crabs, Katelyn Hansen, Blaine Griffen Mar 2026

The Story Behind The Waves: Effects Of Urbanization And Female Presence On Waving Behavior In Fiddler Crabs, Katelyn Hansen, Blaine Griffen

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2026

Animal communication plays a central role in survival and reproduction, allowing individuals to convey information about their quality, territory, and reproductive statuses. Because signaling behaviors are often energetically costly and are dependent on both social contexts and habitat, they are sensitive to environmental conditions. Previous research has shown that male sand fiddler crabs (Leptuca pugilator) produce two distinct wave types: D-waves (typically directed towards other males) and up-and-down waves (typically directed toward females), and that they also reduce their waving behavior under urban stress. Urbanization introduces stressors such as habitat alteration and increased disturbances that can change the frequency and …
