Evaluation Of 5g-Enabled Resource Allocation For Smart Led Streetlight Infrastructure, Ahmed Hassebo, Yasser Hassebo
Evaluation Of 5g-Enabled Resource Allocation For Smart Led Streetlight Infrastructure, Ahmed Hassebo, Yasser Hassebo
Publications and Research
The proliferation of 5G networks facilitates high-speed, low-latency communication essential for the advancement of smart city infrastructure. This research investigates the performance of 5G enabled connectivity for smart LED streetlight systems, focusing on resource allocation strategies between mission-critical and latency-tolerant services. Utilizing MATLAB simulations, the study evaluates network slicing and scheduling algorithms through key performance indicators (KPIs) including throughput, end-to-end delay, and Packet Error Rate (PER). The proposed framework integrates dynamic scheduling mechanisms—analogous to LTE uplink protocols—to optimize energy efficiency and data responsiveness across large-scale urban lighting deployments. Empirical results indicate that 5G Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC) effectively supports real-time …

International Journal of Playwork Practice
Holistic approaches are an evolving pedagogy in the Outside of School Hours Care (OSHC) sector that, despite its recognised value, remain an elusive practice for many educators. This ambiguity has been acknowledged in My Time Our Place (MTOP): Framework for School Age Care in Australia 2.0 (AGDE, 2022). In alignment with this process, the ability for OSHC and extended learning to empower children’s self-identities is fundamental to supporting their holistic development. In a world emerging from the coronavirus pandemic, the ongoing impacts on children – the result of physical separation and societal stressors – cannot be ignored. Accordingly, the child’s …

Evaluating Runtime Monitoring For Reinforcement Learning-Based Flight Control, Andrew Zubyk
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Ensuring safety in adaptive flight controls systems is an ongoing challenge in aviation, especially as advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) trend upwards. Reinforcement learning is becoming more common in aerospace applications due to the ability to improve these models through training. While models such as reinforcement learning enable controllers to learn complex behaviors from interaction with the environment, their unpredictability in novel or disturbed conditions raises severe concerns in safety-critical domains. This research investigates the integration of runtime monitoring, a real-time assurance technique, with reinforcement learning-based flight controllers to ensure safety and reliability during flight. By supervising …

Who Let The Werewolves Into The Manuscripts: Written And Pictorial Representations Of Werewolves In English Manuscripts, Allison Slowiak
Who Let The Werewolves Into The Manuscripts: Written And Pictorial Representations Of Werewolves In English Manuscripts, Allison Slowiak
LSU Master's Theses
The werewolf – a fictional figure that transforms from human to wolf – serves as a compelling example of how medieval thought shaped ideas about identity and transformation. The motif of the werewolf, present in a small corpus of works from the tenth through the fourteenth century, emerged to explore the limits of change while also comparing the likeness of humanity to its animal counterpart. This paper explores medieval literature - Beowulf, Bisclavret, Biclarel, and Melion – from both French or English descent to offer overlapping and contrasting thoughts about human likeness to wolves. The manuscripts - The Nowell Codex, …

Guidelines for managing scientific data have been established under the FAIR principles, requiring that data be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. In many scientific disciplines, especially computational biology, both data and models are key to progress. For this reason, and recognizing that such models are a very special type of "data", we argue that computational models, especially mechanistic models prevalent in medicine, physiology and systems biology, deserve a complementary set of guidelines. We propose the CURE principles, emphasizing that models should be Credible, Understandable, Reproducible, and Extensible. We delve into each principle, discussing verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification for model …

Software-Defined Radios In Avalanche Detection, Andrew Mcdonald
Software-Defined Radios In Avalanche Detection, Andrew Mcdonald
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis explores the use of software-defined radios (SDRs) to develop a low-cost radar system for avalanche detection. Avalanches are a significant danger in mountainous locations and existing systems are often difficult or expensive to use. This research assesses if commercially available SDRs can be used to create a radar system capable of detecting moving targets and accurately measuring distance. A frequency-modulated contiuous-wave (FMCW) radar was implemented using the LimeSDR-Mini and the USRP B210. Signal generation, data collection, and processing all are performed in software, enabling easy configuration. Improvements to data transfer methods for the LimeSDR-Mini reduced sampling errors and …
Clinically Aligned Long-Context Transformers For Cross-Platform Mental Health Risk Detection, Aditya Tekale, Mohammad Masum
Clinically Aligned Long-Context Transformers For Cross-Platform Mental Health Risk Detection, Aditya Tekale, Mohammad Masum
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Social media platforms contain rich but noisy narratives of psychological distress, creating opportunities for early mental health risk detection. However, existing datasets capture heterogeneous constructs such as suicide risk severity, depression diagnosis, and DSM-5 symptom presence, and most prior models are trained and evaluated on a single corpus, limiting their clinical alignment and cross-dataset generalizability. In this study, we fine-tune a domain-specific long-document transformer, AIMH/Mental-Longformer-base-4096, for binary mental health risk detection (risk vs. no risk) using two clinically aligned Reddit datasets: the C-SSRS Reddit corpus and the eRisk 2025 depression dataset. To handle long user histories, we introduce an LLM-based …

Automating Administrative Burden In Algorithmic Criminal Record Expungement, Sarah Esther Lageson, Ericka B. Adams, Elsa Y. Chen
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Administrative burden describes the learning costs, psychological costs, and compliance costs people face when attempting to interface with the government, particularly in seeking a benefit. Algorithmic and automated processes offer the potential of reducing administrative burdens, but scant empirical research has determined to what, if any effect. This study uses the case of criminal record expungement in two policy contexts: traditional, court petition-based systems and newly enacted automated systems, to understand if and how administrative burden persists, and whether and how these burdens operate differently in the context of the criminal legal system. Drawing on interviews with 105 expungement-eligible people, …

Associations Between Caregiver-Provider Communication Quality And Unmet Care Needs Among Older Adults, Jiaming Liang, Rafael Samper-Ternent, Brian Downer, Zhigang Xie
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
BACKGROUND: Unmet care needs (lack of assistance with daily activities) among older adults are common and linked to adverse health outcomes, greater healthcare utilization, and caregiver burden. While effective patient-provider communication is known to improve care quality, less is understood about the role of caregiver-provider communication, particularly across sociodemographic, health, and caregiving contexts. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional secondary analysis of pooled 2021–2023 National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) and National Study of Caregiving (NSOC) data, restricted to community-dwelling older adults (65 + years) who received assistance from caregivers due to difficulty with daily activities, and had at least …

Measurable Residual Disease Testing In Acute Myeloid Leukemia: Current State, Foundational Models, And Tools For Future Development, Joseph Van Galen, Stephen D. Willis, Ashish Bains, Sara H. Small
Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a lethal and rapidly progressive hematologic malignancy with high rates of relapse and treatment refractoriness. Management of AML is complicated by biological heterogeneity in a disease that is broadly defined by the clonal expansion of myeloblasts that otherwise play an important role in healthy marrow tissues. While subtypes of AML are increasingly defined by druggable driver mutations including FLT3-ITD, IDH1, IDH2, and NPM1, conventional chemotherapy and reduced intensity induction regimens (e.g., azacitidine-venetoclax) remain therapeutic backbones. One area of active development for personalization of AML treatment is the assessment of measurable residual disease (MRD). MRD testing …

Residential Life As An Equity Strategy For First-Year Persistence Among First-Generation, Low-Income, And Racially Minoritized Students, Joshua Kwaku Addai
Residential Life As An Equity Strategy For First-Year Persistence Among First-Generation, Low-Income, And Racially Minoritized Students, Joshua Kwaku Addai
Poster Presentations
Despite decades of research on student retention, first-year attrition continues to disproportionately affect first-generation, low-income, and racially minoritized students. Institutional responses have largely emphasized financial aid, advising reform, and classroom-based interventions. However, students spend much of their first year within residential environments; spaces that profoundly shape belonging, identity development, and daily engagement. This study argues that residential life is not merely a housing function but a critical, and often underexamined, site of equity-driven student persistence. Drawing on Tinto’s theory of academic and social integration and Museus’s Culturally Engaging Campus Environments (CECE) model, this literature review synthesizes interdisciplinary research to examine …
