Climate Change And The Reconfiguration Of Arctic Access, Charles H. Norchi, Amanda H. Lynch Apr 2026

Climate Change And The Reconfiguration Of Arctic Access, Charles H. Norchi, Amanda H. Lynch

Faculty Publications

The Arctic is warming faster than any other region on Earth, with surface air temperatures increasing at a rate nearly four times the global average.1 This amplification of global change has been reshaping the Arctic for decades, altering sea ice extent and thickness, snow regimes, permafrost stability, and hydrological systems. Against this backdrop, a persistent narrative has taken hold that the diminishing cryosphere2 is setting the table for opportunity: opening the Arctic to navigation, development, and exploitation. But this thaw renders the Arctic neither benign nor uniformly accessible. The region remains frozen for most of the year, dark for months …

Embedding Social Determinants Of Health Into Maternal Simulation Scenarios: Enhancing Nursing Staff Awareness Of Equity-Based Education, Sherina Evans

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Despite growing evidence emphasizing the importance in addressing disparities in maternal health outcomes, maternal health simulations often lack integration of social determinants of health (SDOH) and cultural considerations. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice quality improvement project was to enhance nursing faculty cultural awareness through simulation scenarios that incorporate SDOH and culturally responsive elements. This project was guided by Lewin’s Change Theory and the Jeffries Simulation Framework. The aim was to strengthen faculty awareness and skills to support the development of culturally inclusive simulation experiences. Descriptive statistics were utilized to analyze results which was a limitation. Nursing faculty …

In our unit group, “Big Fungus,” the Wicked Problem we decided to address was the “Protection of Fungal Networks.” After researching into further depth the attributes of the wicked problem, we would then integrate the information into our prototype with our chosen theoretical lens; “Futures Thinking.” This would involve analysing past, present behaviours, theorising the potential future that this could result in, as well as establishing both the feared and desirable future. In order to reach a target demographic, however, we would decide it would be best to direct our prototype towards Primary School Students (aged 10-12), as this would …

Improving Monitoring And Documentation Of Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotic Adherence In Patients With Schizophrenia Through Staff Education And Refill History Review, Stacy Ann Bruce Apr 2026

Improving Monitoring And Documentation Of Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotic Adherence In Patients With Schizophrenia Through Staff Education And Refill History Review, Stacy Ann Bruce

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric disorder associated with relapse, hospitalization, and poor outcomes when medication adherence is suboptimal. Nonadherence increases morbidity and healthcare utilization (World Health Organization, 2022; Zhao et al., 2025). Long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics improve adherence and reduce hospitalization, but inconsistent monitoring and documentation in outpatient settings hinder early identification of missed doses (Lieslehto et al., 2022). This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement project aimed to evaluate whether staff education and structured refill-monitoring processes improve identification and documentation of nonadherence to LAI antipsychotics. Using Kotter’s Change Management Model and the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework, the project focused on …

Quality Improvement Project: Emergency Preparedness In Urgent Care: Impacting Competency Among Medical Assistants, Sarah Pettyjohn Apr 2026

Quality Improvement Project: Emergency Preparedness In Urgent Care: Impacting Competency Among Medical Assistants, Sarah Pettyjohn

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Urgent care settings present significant challenges, including limited staffing and resources, unpredictable patient acuity, and training deficiencies. These factors contribute to a competency gap among medical assistants, limiting their ability to recognize and respond to medical emergencies. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to impact emergency medical preparedness through a formal educational intervention. Grounded in Lewin’s Change Model and the Kirkpatrick Model, the project aims to improve emergency medical competency, consistent with evidence supporting structured training approaches. Using American Heart Association guidelines, medical assistants participated in a six-week educational program implemented through the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework, with assessments administered …

Sdn Controller For Distributed Quantum Computing, Firas Selmi Apr 2026

Sdn Controller For Distributed Quantum Computing, Firas Selmi

Masters Theses

Quantum networks promise transformative capabilities for computation [1], but current hardware remains limited; state-of-the-art quantum processors still operate with only a few hundred qubits [2], far below the scale required for practical applications. This limitation motivates the use of Distributed Quantum Computing (DQC), where computation is performed across multiple interconnected nodes. However, efficient DQC requires global network awareness and orchestration, a role analogous to Software-Defined Networking (SDN) in classical systems. In this work, we investigate the impact of SDN-inspired control logic on quantum networks by executing a scaled distributed implementation of Shor’s algorithm to factor N = 15 over a …

Improving Identification And Referral Of Xylazine‑Associated Wounds In Homeless Healthcare, Ramon A. Gambino Apr 2026

Improving Identification And Referral Of Xylazine‑Associated Wounds In Homeless Healthcare, Ramon A. Gambino

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Background: Xylazine-adulterated fentanyl is linked to distinctive necrotic wounds and complex care needs in unsheltered populations. This quality improvement (QI) project implemented a brief survey and referral log at Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless (AHCH) to track suspected xylazine-associated wounds and referrals to advanced care. Methods: Final data were exported from Qualtrics, cleaned to retain finished responses, standardized categories, and de-identified. The analytic sample included 18 encounters. Results: Results showed that 55.6% (n = 10) documented suspected xylazine-associated wounds; 5.6% (n = 1) reported no suspicion; 38.9% (n = 7) were uncertain. Referrals were rarely documented overall at AHCH …

An Empirical Case Study Of Substance Abuse Treatment Retention For Black Women In Boston, Melinda Asiamah Apr 2026

An Empirical Case Study Of Substance Abuse Treatment Retention For Black Women In Boston, Melinda Asiamah

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

This research investigates the disproportionate impact of substance use disorders (SUD) on Black women, a population facing critically low treatment retention rates, evidenced by outpatient dropout rates averaging 55%. Despite the efficacy of sustained treatment, Black women consistently underutilize and prematurely exit services compared to other demographics. This study asserts that identifying the drivers behind these disparities requires a shift from traditional public health lenses toward a framework that centers racial oppression, systemic barriers, and cultural obstacles.

By integrating Critical Race Theory (CRT), Black Feminist Theory, Social Determinants of Mental Health, and Biopsychosocial Theory, this research explores the impact of …

The Learning Analytics Value Chain, Charles Lang, Yunxi Kong, Geraldine Gray, Jie Gao

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

A persistent challenge for the learning analytics community is how to achieve a meaningful impact on educational practice. This paper proposes that Porter’s Value Chain framework provides a useful lens for addressing this challenge. This study developed operational definitions of a Learning Analytics Value Chain and mapped learning analytics research output (3,720 publications) over the last 16 years to its five stages: 1. Concept Development, 2. Prototyping & Efficacy, 3. Evaluation, 4. Dissemination, and 5. Impact & Iteration. SoLAR supported learning analytics venues show heavy concentration in Prototyping & Efficacy (41.5-43.2%) and Evaluation (43.4-53.4%), with minimal Dissemination (0.1-3.8%) and Impact …

Empowerment Or Oppression? College Students’ Interpretations Of Sex And Relationships In The Popular Media, Nicola Mcclung, Riana Pella Apr 2026

Empowerment Or Oppression? College Students’ Interpretations Of Sex And Relationships In The Popular Media, Nicola Mcclung, Riana Pella

Journal of Media Literacy Education Pre-Prints

Scholars have long emphasized the harmful effects of overtly sexist and oppressive media images on young people’s understandings of sex and relationships. Yet, this emphasis on explicit harm leaves a gap in understanding how college students interpret subtle, hidden, and ambiguous media messages. To address this gap, we asked 196 California college students at a large public university to critique a range of mainstream media content—from overtly oppressive, to affirming of nondominant gender identities, to containing mixed messages about empowerment and oppression. Responses were coded using our media literacy scoring guide for assessing students’ ability to critically analyze media messages …

Acoustic Realization Of Singleton–Geminate Contrast In Lebanese Arabic Infant-Directed Speech: A Case Study, Nief Aied Al-Gamdi Apr 2026

Acoustic Realization Of Singleton–Geminate Contrast In Lebanese Arabic Infant-Directed Speech: A Case Study, Nief Aied Al-Gamdi

UB Journal for Humanities

Although Infant-directed speech (IDS) involves modifications of speech to facilitate child’s language acquisition, this area of research needs more evidence on the maintenance of segmental contrasts. Drawing on a longitudinal corpus of conversation recordings of a Lebanese mother and her young son over eight months at Newcastle University, this acoustic study examined IDS with a focus on Lebanese Arabic (LA). It analyzed single and double coronal consonants (C) in two-and three-syllable trochaic words with short vowels (V). Using PRAAT-based acoustic analysis, 560 tokens of trochaic disyllabic and trisyllabic words in short-V contexts were examined for duration, intensity, and fundamental frequency …
