Analysis On Vehicle‐Bridge Interaction Of High‐Pier Continuous Rigid Frame Bridge, Liu Huaquan, Yang Dehai, Cai Chengqi, Huang Zhenming, Chen Zhouqi
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
To study the dynamic response characteristics of the vehicle-bridge system under moving vehicle loads, a three-span high-pier continuous rigid frame bridge was selected as the research object. A 2-axle, 7-degree-of-freedom vehicle model was applied to explore the effects of vehicle speed, number of vehicles, and vehicle load on the dynamic response of the vehicle-bridge system. The results show that vehicle speed has minimal impact on the peak displacement response of the bridge. However, when vehicles travel at the same speed, the peak displacement response differs across bridge spans, with resonance occurring at a vehicle speed of 40 km/h. As the …

A Conditional Strategy For Cell-Type-Specific Labeling Of Endogenous Excitatory Synapses In Drosophila, Michael J. Parisi, Michael A. Aimino, Timothy J. Mosca
A Conditional Strategy For Cell-Type-Specific Labeling Of Endogenous Excitatory Synapses In Drosophila, Michael J. Parisi, Michael A. Aimino, Timothy J. Mosca
Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers
Chemical neurotransmission occurs at specialized contacts where neurotransmitter release machinery apposes neurotransmitter receptors to underlie circuit function. A series of complex events underlies preand postsynaptic protein recruitment to neuronal connections. To better study synaptic development in individual neurons, we need cell-type-specific strategies to visualize endogenous synaptic proteins. Although presynaptic strategies exist, postsynaptic proteins remain less studied because of a paucity of cell-type-specific reagents. To study excitatory postsynapses with cell-type specificity, we engineered dlg1[4K], a conditionally labeled marker of Drosophila excitatory postsynaptic densities. With binary expression systems, dlg1[4K] labels central and peripheral postsynapses in larvae and adults. Using dlg1[4K], we find …

Study On Relationship Of Solar Radiation Temperature And Pier‐Top Displacement Of Ultra‐High Thin‐Walled Hollow Pier, Liu Zhishen, Zhang Yifei, Song Fei, Su Jufeng, Ren Xiang
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
Thin-walled hollow piers are widely used in high-pier and long-span continuous rigid-frame bridges. Solar radiation-induced displacements at the tops of ultra-high thin-walled hollow piers can negatively affect the structural alignment and stress during construction and post-construction phases. Based on a 180 m high thin-walled hollow pier of a large bridge in Shaanxi Province, this paper analyzes the temperature field and pier-top displacement using data collected during two 24-hour periods: August 28-29 and October 11-12. The temperature field and pier-top displacement patterns over time were studied using finite element analysis. The results show that the temperature difference between the north and …

Study On Alkali Excitation Mechanism Of Large Dosage Slag Fine Powder, Mei Yang
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
To reveal the alkali excitation mechanism of high-dosage slag, this paper combines a three-factor, three-level orthogonal design with macro- and micro-performance tests and microstructure analysis. The effects of different activators, including Ca(OH)2, Na2SiO3, Na2SO4, and CaSO4, in single and dual combinations on the initial and final setting times, pore solution pH, and strength of concrete were explored. The results show that the impact on the strength of hardened paste of composite cementitious materials is ranked as: activator type > dosage > dual-mix ratio. The optimal dual-mix dosage is 4%, with the best combination being Ca(OH)2 and Na2SiO3 at a ratio of 5:1. …

Analysis Of Expressway Routine Maintenance Performance Management Based On Dea, Li Yuhuan, Shi Xiaoli, Gao Nan
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
To allocate maintenance resources efficiently and improve management levels, this paper examines the maintenance performance and improvement strategies of routine maintenance projects for 23 expressways in Shaanxi Province using 2018 operational maintenance data and data envelopment analysis. The results show that for some inefficient subsidiaries, traditional radial- and slack-based performance improvement methods are challenging and impractical in the short term. Therefore, a scenario-dependent model-based long-term incremental improvement strategy is proposed. By leveraging relative improvement values, this strategy enables phased improvements for inefficient subsidiaries. It provides a feasible approach for subsidiaries to set lower short-term performance improvement targets while achieving gradual …

Is My Prescription Ready Yet? A Qualitative Examination Of Patients' Understanding Of The Prescription Filling Process In Community Pharmacies, Maria Sallee
Honors Theses
Long lines at the pharmacy can frustrate patients. Consequently, patients becoming frustrated can add stress to an already overworked pharmacy. Without knowing what patients understand about the often complicated prescription filling process at community pharmacies, it can be difficult for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to communicate the reason behind any delays in patients receiving their medication. To learn what patients understand about the prescription filling process, fifteen interviews were conducted over the phone after mailing recruitment flyers to members of a diabetes research collaborative in North Mississippi. The interviews revealed that while patients have a positive relationship with their pharmacists, …

Life expectancies of people living with HIV have significantly lengthened due to the availability of antiretroviral therapies. Despite their ability to increase survival, these treatments do not “cure” HIV, nor do the stop the onset of neurological symptoms associated with infection, termed neuroHIV. NeuroHIV describes a myriad of neurological impairments including mood disorders (depression and anxiety), cognitive impairment, neuropathic pain, and motor disinhibition that reduce quality of life for people living with HIV. Mechanistically, the neurological impairments may involve actions of neurotoxic proteins directly produced by the virus. One of these proteins that has been well-characterized is the HIV trans …

Monitoring American Federalism: The Overlooked Tool Of Sounding The Alarm Interposition, Christian G. Fritz
Monitoring American Federalism: The Overlooked Tool Of Sounding The Alarm Interposition, Christian G. Fritz
Faculty Scholarship
One key feature of the U.S. Constitution – the concept of federalism – was unclear when it was introduced, and that lack of clarity threatened the Constitution’s ratification by those who feared the new government would undermine state sovereignty. Proponents of the new governmental framework were questioned about the underlying theory of the Constitution as well as how it would operate in practice, and their explanations produced intense and extended debate over how to monitor federalism.

Public health leaders are increasingly being asked to address adaptive challenges in the context of finite and often limited resources. Budgets and their associated resources create the financial framework within which public health agencies and organizations must operate. Yet, many public health professionals expected to undertake roles requiring this foundational knowledge and skills are not trained in the fundamentals of public finance and are ill-equipped for managing and monitoring funds. Graduate courses in schools of public health most often are focused on health care management and finance or private sector finance. To meet the needs of future public health leaders, …
Family Engagement In Schools: Family Engagement Guide, Sara Anderson
Family Engagement In Schools: Family Engagement Guide, Sara Anderson
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Family engagement in schools has been looked at and researched for many years. It has been shown that increased family engagement in schools leads to higher student achievement (Epstein and Voorhis, 2010). Family engagement literature explains engagement can be increased, the benefits, common barriers, and implications for schools (Dikkers, 2013). It continues to be researched to look at multiple ways engagement can be effective for students, families, and communities. Increased family engagement in education positively affects student performance and overall experience (Epstein, 1987). As such, it is important for schools to have a program in place to encourage and enable …

A Modified Dbt-Informed Art Therapy Group Curriculum With A Focus On Neurodiversity Acceptance, Megan Moyer
Art Therapy Counseling Final Research Projects
Historically, therapy methods made to support neurodivergent individuals have been focused on reducing “challenge behaviors” and modifying behavior to societal standards. Simultaneously, many behavior modification therapies neglect the emotional well-being of the individual. As neurodiversity grows to be accepted as an aspect of diversity, so too must therapy methods change to promote skill building in line with the cultural values and strengths of neurodivergent individuals and promote social-emotional well-being. This group therapy curriculum poses as one such possibility to this change by utilizing DBT and Art Therapy in a group psychoeducation format.

Osimertinib sensitive and resistant NSCLC NCI-H1975 clones are used to model osimertinib acquired resistance in humanized and non-humanized mice and delineate potential resistance mechanisms. No new EGFR mutations or loss of the EGFR T790M mutation are found in resistant clones. Resistant tumors grown under continuous osimertinib pressure both in humanized and non-humanized mice show aggressive tumor regrowth which is significantly less sensitive to osimertinib as compared with parental tumors. 3-phosphoinositide-dependent kinase 1 (PDK1) is identified as a potential driver of osimertinib acquired resistance, and its selective inhibition by BX795 and CRISPR gene knock out, sensitizes resistant clones. In-vivo inhibition of …
Reversing Cfius: Analyzing The International And Constitutional Implications Of The Revised National Critical Capabilities Defense Act, Madison Cash
Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law
In 2022, congressional consideration of the Revised National Critical Capabilities Defense Act (Revised NCCDA), colloquially known as "Reverse CFIUS", caused a flurry of conversation amongst congressional committees, legal practitioners, and private companies. The bill proposed a broad outbound foreign investment review regime for industries implicating national critical capabilities. While Congress ultimately declined to pass the Revised NCCDA, a similar outbound review mechanism is soon likely to be promulgated by the Executive Branch or the Legislative Branch. This note discusses the legislative history resulting in the proposal of an outbound investment review mechanism. It criticizes the breadth and ambiguity of the …

An Introduction To Five Selected Modern Korean Art Songs, Gagok, By Composers Guisook Lee And Jiyoun Chung, Ji Hee Kim
Dissertations, 2020-current
Modern Korean art song, Gagok, is the Western-style vocal music genre that developed in the twentieth century in Korea, predominantly through the influence of western music curricula in missionary schools and the presence of Korean military bands. These influences led to the first generation of Western music leaders who contributed to the birth of Gagok. As a result, this new genre rapidly became popular and continued to be developed despite the Japanese occupation of Korea (1910-1945) and up to the present day. Since the birth of Gagok, two divergent compositional styles have emerged.
This DMA document aims to introduce professional …

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent deficits in social communication, restricted behaviors, and executive functioning deficits. Mutations in fractalkine signaling, particularly in CX3CR1, in the brain have been linked to ASD and other neurodevelopmental disorders. This investigation examined wild-type mice and mice with one or two copies of mutated CX3CR1 and their uni-modal (auditory and somatosensory) and multi-modal (combined) pre-pulse inhibitions (PPI). PPI is an unconditioned response – a decrement in the acoustic startle reflex when the mouse detects a non-startling stimulus presented a few hundred ms before the startling sound. In this study, the …

Dissertations, 2020-current
In the face of declining enrollments and increasing accountability and expectations, private colleges and universities will be facing greater internal and external pressures to deliver higher quality education at a lower cost. In this environment, multiple stakeholders are focused on institutional sustainability. To address these concerns, it is important to understand whether there are leading indicators that may aid in the anticipation of institutional decline. While there is a body of work addressing institutional metrics that serve as predictors of higher education financial viability, there has been little emphasis on complex organizational dynamics. This integrated mixed methods study employed grounded …

The purpose of this study is to gain greater understanding of the dynamics between adaptive leadership strategy and the success of community college students. A strategic alliance formed between a community college and a college promise non-profit organization provides the complex environment to explore these phenomena. The establishment of a “Future Center” on the community college campus serves as the adaptive focal point of the study. The study’s theoretical framework is based upon the interaction of two perspectives: the ecological model of student development (Bronfenbrenner, 1979) and adaptive leadership theory (Heifetz & Laurie, 1997). Study design utilized a three-phased exploratory …
Observing How College Students Process Culturally Responsive Test Items, Chris R. Patterson
Observing How College Students Process Culturally Responsive Test Items, Chris R. Patterson
Dissertations, 2020-current
Typical approaches to test and item development are rooted in the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing. Culturally responsive and antiracist assessment practices are two new processes that challenge the typical process noted in the Standards, incorporating critical race theory and cultural responsiveness into the item development process. Given these two approaches are relatively new, there is minimal research on how test takers process and comprehend test items created using these approaches.
This dissertation modified multiple-choice test items through the lenses of cultural responsiveness and antiracism to create two sets of item types (diversity-infused and sociopolitical consciousness; DI and …
Developing And Establishing Validity Evidence For A Measure Of Situational Leadership In An Outdoor Leadership Context, Guy B. Debrun
Developing And Establishing Validity Evidence For A Measure Of Situational Leadership In An Outdoor Leadership Context, Guy B. Debrun
Dissertations, 2020-current
Discussions of what it means to be an effective outdoor leader are common in outdoor education literature (Smith & Penny, 2010). Research has identified core competencies, conceptual frameworks, and course curricula for effective leadership. However, the criteria upon which judgements are made about leaders lack clarity (Smith & Penny, 2010). Furthermore, very little is documented, and few evaluation instruments exist to evaluate outdoor leader effectiveness (Phipps et al., 2005). The lack of instruments is problematic for four reasons: (1) it hampers efforts to create recognized outdoor leader certifications, (2) it impedes efforts to demonstrate the value of outdoor leadership program …

Impact Of Diabetes Mellitus On Vestibular Function: A Scoping Review, Ellen M. Jones
Dissertations, 2020-current
Diabetes mellitus (DM) encompasses a group of metabolic diseases that result in high blood sugar (i.e., hyperglycemia). By 2030, it is anticipated that 578 million adults worldwide will have DM, with this number growing at a faster rate in developed areas of the world.[27] If left uncontrolled, DM can cause considerable damage to several areas of the body, including the heart, kidneys, nerves, and ears. When focusing exclusively on the ears, there has been markedly less research on the vestibular system when compared to the auditory system, even though DM is a known risk factor for falling. The purpose …
Magnitude Estimates Of Angular Motion: Perception Of Speed And Spatial Orientation Across Visual And Vestibular Modalities, Erin Hernon
Dissertations, 2020-current
Both the vestibular system and optokinetic system generate conjugate eye movements in response to either movement of the head or movement of the visual surround. Both systems help to maintain gaze stability. While the VOR is most sensitive to input frequencies above .2 Hz, the optokinetic system helps maintain gaze stability at lower frequencies. Previous research on perceptual thresholds across the two sensory modalities shows that there are frequency-dependent differences between vestibular and visual perception. The purpose of this study is to extend previous vestibular psychophysics work by 1) comparing magnitude estimates from vestibular stimulation to visual stimulation across multiple …
