The Artistry Of Mediation: A Look At Mediation’S Effectiveness For Resolving Cross-Cultural Disputes Through The Leonardo Da Vinci Conflict Between France’S Louvre Museum And Italy’S Uffizi Gallery, Sophia D. Casetta
Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research
Art is powerful, as it symbolizes the history and identity of the country that claims it. However, through timely transitions, such as trade and wars, the ownership of meaningful artworks blurs, with museums fighting to claim their heritage to put on honorable display for their people. Mediation can be a peaceful means to resolve art ownership disputes, as it accounts for respecting the individual cultures of the countries represented in the dispute. Using the key medication traits described within this essay, a prepared mediator involved in such a cross-cultural conflict should be able to help resolve the issue at hand. …
Exploring The Experiences Of Black College Women With Autism, Ruth Childress
Exploring The Experiences Of Black College Women With Autism, Ruth Childress
Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research
This research paper explores the experiences of Black women with autism in college by adopting a framework of intersectionality. The paper specifically examines self-advocacy within these women and the impact that their intersecting identities may have on their ability to self-advocate. The development of self-advocacy skills in students with disabilities is crucial for their academic achievement in college, and students with autism face specific challenges in navigating the transition into post-secondary institutions. However, students with disabilities face challenges in developing self-advocacy skills due to the stigma surrounding disability and the need for self-realization and awareness. Black women with autism face …
Who Am I?: How Natives’ Mental Trauma Develop During Precolonial And Colonial Eras As Seen In Achebe’S Things Fall Apart And Fanon’S The Wretched Of The Earth, Sophia D. Casetta
Who Am I?: How Natives’ Mental Trauma Develop During Precolonial And Colonial Eras As Seen In Achebe’S Things Fall Apart And Fanon’S The Wretched Of The Earth, Sophia D. Casetta
Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research
Colonialism is a long, brutal process, where natives’ identities are uprooted as colonizers establish their influence in a foreign land. Consequently, through the exploration of the natives’ response to this upheaval throughout the precolonial and colonial eras, the psychological toll that is placed on the colonized is evident. Such mental trauma that is incited is explored in Chinua Achebe’s fictional novel Things Fall Apart, which unveils the slowly lost of the natives’ identities during the precolonial shift, and the non-fiction work of Frantz Fanon, The Wretched of the Earth that details psychological disorders of the colonized due to colonization. …

The Intersection Of Gender And Negotiation: A Comprehensive Look At The Literature, Kelsey England
Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research
According to the majority of literature it appears there are differences in specific advantages and disadvantages genders are exposed to in negotiations. This article aims to further introduce and break down the literature in order to provide a comprehensive overview of the intersections of negotiation and gender in regards to general negotiation practices, negotiations within the workplace, and what can be done to level the playing field in regards to disadvantages placed on certain genders. This article also addresses the remaining gaps in the literature and suggests where the research should move in future studies.

Three Sides To Success: Exploring How Inclusive Partnerships Can Nurture Robust Family And Community Engagement In The Classroom For African-American Students, Orianna Vaughn
Education | Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which conscious family and community partnerships with middle schools can play an integral part of academic achievement for Black children. Family and community engagement play a critical role in a student’s success as support, and knowledge of their scholar’s strengths and interests can be an asset not only in the classroom, but to the scholar’s overall academic success, which can “lead to higher educational aspirations and increased student motivations'' (Bartz, et al. 2017). However, presiding narratives of disengagement and disinterest from Black parents in their scholar’s academic life have …
Casting Your Own Spell: The Role Of Individualism In Wiccan Beliefs, Matt Mcdermott
Casting Your Own Spell: The Role Of Individualism In Wiccan Beliefs, Matt Mcdermott
Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society
What is the role of individualism within the neopagan religious movement of Wicca? To answer this question, this research study was carried out in western North Carolina using participant observation and interviews with ten practitioners in 2021. This paper argues that Wiccan adherents cultivate an individualist agency that manifests through an openness to beliefs and practices. One of Wicca’s key characteristics is a lack of commitment to dogma. This allows Wiccans to bring aspects of their own identities and personalities into their practices. This individualist agency is shaped by solitary and collectivist forms of Wicca, which place value on liberating, …
Representing Rebels: The Semiotics Of Neo-Confederate Heritage In Transnational Digital Spaces, Maximilian Conrad
Representing Rebels: The Semiotics Of Neo-Confederate Heritage In Transnational Digital Spaces, Maximilian Conrad
Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society
This study examines the discursive profiles of two websites — the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Fraternity of American Descendants — in order to understand the transnational dimensions of neo-Confederate digital spaces. The Fraternity of American Descendants is a nonprofit organization that since 1954 has been based in the town of Santa Bárbara d’Oeste in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. The organization works to maintain the historic patrimony of immigration associated with Confederados, American Southerners who fled the United States after the defeat of the Confederacy in the American Civil War. In the United States, the Sons of …

This paper proceeds in three initial Parts, each of which examines one of these tax-technology developments. A concluding section follows in a fourth Part that assesses and applies these technological developments and presents a specific proposal for tax reform targeting regressivity in the consumption tax.
Part 1 considers biometric identifiers embedded in national identity “smart cards.” It observes that they are here today. They are currently in use in Asia and parts of the EU with comprehensive EU implementation just over the horizon. Similar IDs in America will be in place by 2008under the Real ID Act. This Part then …

This paper will examine Limited Issue Focused Examination (LIFE) and whether the Large to Mid-Size Business Division (LMSB) has given up too much in the name of improving audit currency in a world of insufficient enforcement resources. Part II will discuss some of the recent budget and enforcement problems that the IRS has been having. Part III will examine LIFE and explain the program’s specifics. Part IV will analyze whether the IRS has exceeded its authority in implementing LIFE. Part IV will also address the IRS’s unwillingness to explain fully critical aspects of LIFE to the public. Part V will …
Tax Discrimination: A Comparative Analysis Of U.S. And Eu Approaches, Tracy A. Kaye
Tax Discrimination: A Comparative Analysis Of U.S. And Eu Approaches, Tracy A. Kaye
Florida Tax Review
This article focuses on these two “federalist” systems (U.S. Constitution and EEC Treaty) and their respective approaches to thwarting tax discrimination. Like Congress, the Council of Ministers (comprised of representatives of the Member States at the ministerial level) has the power to regulate commerce between the Member States. Nevertheless, despite several studies outlining the distortions to the internal market caused by tax differences, the scope of EC direct tax legislation is currently very limited when compared to progress made in the value added tax area. Many commentators blame the “continuous legislative vacuum in the income tax area” on the continued …

P. Musa, Obiako O. Reginald, Aliyu Ahmadu Babadoko
BioMedicine
Background: In HIV infection, dysregulation of cytokines, including interleukin 18 (IL-18), has been linked to poor clinical outcomes in studies mainly conducted in resource-rich countries. This phenomenon has not been well-studied in resource-limited settings where outcomes could be confounded by exposure to endemic infections and genetic factors.
Objectives: Therefore, the influence of immunological and virological status of HIV-infected, antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naïve patients on serum IL-18 levels at baseline (pretreatment) and 24 weeks following initiation of combination ART (cART24) in a resource-limited setting was investigated. Methods Using the cross-sectional and longitudinal mixed method design, a total of Forty-four (44) newly diagnosed …

Hacker, Influencer, Counter-Culture Spy: Cyberspace Actors’ Models Of Misinformation And Counter-Operations, Benjamin Kessell
Hacker, Influencer, Counter-Culture Spy: Cyberspace Actors’ Models Of Misinformation And Counter-Operations, Benjamin Kessell
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
As misinformation continues to spread on social media, its residents have begun to fight back, independent of any platform. This organic resistance to the diffusion of misinformation is a clearly observable phenomenon with roots in Anonymous’ distributed campaigns from the 2010s outwards. Hacker and information security communities are acting in defense of some of their favorite spaces, most notably, Twitter. Security researchers of all stripes use it for sharing indicators of compromise but, as the diffusion of misinformation becomes more problematic it becomes more difficult to find signals in the noise.
These actors’ response to the issues at hand is …

Early Radial Positional Information In The Cochlea Is Optimized By A Precise Linear Bmp Gradient And Enhanced By Sox2., Matthew J Thompson, Caryl A Young, Vidhya Munnamalai, David M Umulis
Faculty Research 2023
Positional information encoded in signaling molecules is essential for early patterning in the prosensory domain of the developing cochlea. The sensory epithelium, the organ of Corti, contains an exquisite repeating pattern of hair cells and supporting cells. This requires precision in the morphogen signals that set the initial radial compartment boundaries, but this has not been investigated. To measure gradient formation and morphogenetic precision in developing cochlea, we developed a quantitative image analysis procedure measuring SOX2 and pSMAD1/5/9 profiles in mouse embryos at embryonic day (E)12.5, E13.5, and E14.5. Intriguingly, we found that the pSMAD1/5/9 profile forms a linear gradient …

Bridging Philosophy And Neuroscience: How Behavioral Experiments Inform A Recent Theory Of Animal Consciousness, Qasim Abrar Qureshi
Bridging Philosophy And Neuroscience: How Behavioral Experiments Inform A Recent Theory Of Animal Consciousness, Qasim Abrar Qureshi
Cognitive Science Senior Theses
Consciousness is a loaded term and can mean many different things to different people. The goal of this paper is to investigate animal consciousness with an emphasis on rats. We investigated different ways of approaching the problem of animal consciousness including neuroscientific and philosophical methods. Next, we examined, a recent theory of animal consciousness in detail and examined neuroscientific evidence to support animals possessing the features described in the theory. The theory posited that consciousness includes five different components: perceptual richness, evaluative richness, self-consciousness, unity, and temporality. After, we discussed the phenomenon of “insight” and how it is similar and …

Preservice Teachers’ Preparedness To Teach Writing: Looking Closely At A Semester Of Structured Literacy Tutoring, Hannah Carter, Jadelyn Abbott, Katherine Landau Wright
Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations
Preparing preservice teachers (PSTs) as teachers of writing has gained attention in recent years, but little is known about their preparedness when engaging with student writers over extended periods. We examine PSTs’ preparedness to teach writing within a structured literacy tutoring experience to better understand the skills and knowledge of PSTs related to teaching writing. Results indicate PSTs contextualized writing instruction, considered clients’ affect around writing, and used data to inform writing lessons. PSTs were also grappling with specific pedagogical considerations related to writing instruction, offering implications for teacher educators and researchers.
A Strategic Model For Sustainability Based On The Dcf Model, Luis RaúL RodríGuez Reyes
A Strategic Model For Sustainability Based On The Dcf Model, Luis RaúL RodríGuez Reyes
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
This conceptual paper contributes to the sustainability discussion by studying the relationship between sustainability and companies’ financial performance, looking for how companies’ sustainability adoption, reflected in CSR/ESG performance, can add financial value to shareholders. Results from the theoretical and literature analysis, using discounted cash flow techniques, indicate that sustainability adoption can be value-additive for shareholders, requiring fine-tuning to find financial equilibrium in three distinctive value channels: sustainability investment, financial, and revenue channels. However, managerial skills and resources may not be enough to ensure a positive result. As necessary conditions, this strategy requires achieving high performance in CSR/ESG indicators and the …

Migratory Material: Epigenetics & Weaving At The Us-Mexico Border, Valerie Navarrete
Masters Theses
Discourse often sutures the body shut, disallowing representations of identity to outgrow sociopolitical interests. This issue may originate from borders, but also from the unnamable pathology that generational colonial trauma transmits to the mind, body, and environment. Without a direct form of translatability, this thesis proposes a new materialism that deviates from any object-oriented ontology. Untethered and intra-active, epigenetics and weaving represent objects that transform typical ways of knowing and seeing. Their sensitivity to the environment, in addition to their mobility across generations of time, broaden the spatiotemporal loci of the body and its embodiment. Proposing new materials that expand …

A Machine Learning Model To Predict The Asd Traits And Challenging Behaviors In Children, Biswaranjan Senapati
Theses and Dissertations
A neurological disorder, along with several behavioral issues, may be to blame for a child's subpar performance in the academic journey (such as anxiety, depression, learning disorders, and irritability). These symptoms can be used to diagnose children with ASD, and supervised machine learning models can help differentiate between ASD traits and other behavioral traits in children, so that a correct diagnosis can be made. Autism usually shows up in a child within the first two years of life, but it can happen at any time. This research aims to create a model for predicting ASD traits and challenging behaviors in …

Mourning In Eco-Poetics & Cellar As Linguistic Category, Gwen Moon
Mourning In Eco-Poetics & Cellar As Linguistic Category, Gwen Moon
University Honors Theses
These poems are informed by ecopoetics as defined by Forest Gander: "If natural processes are already altered by and responsive to human observation, how does poetry register the complex interdependency that draws us into a dialogue with the world?" Because the backdrop of our lives is changing with increasing signs of eco-collapse, our bodies are constantly sensing fear and loss. These poems merge the personal with the global in an attempt at a corporeal language that conveys meaning as a felt sense over a cerebral relationship. To quote William Wenthe, "…there is something physical, corporeal about our experience of syntactic …
