A Study On Awareness Of Reference Management Software For Research Writing Activity Used By University Teachers, Dalitso Mvula
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The study aimed at investigating the level of knowledge and awareness of reference management software among teaching faculties at the University of Zambia. With an increased emphasis on research and publications in higher education institutions, using these tools can significantly improve the efficiency and accuracy of the citation process. Despite the availability of these tools, the academic community at the University of Zambia has not fully embraced their use. The study aimed to understand why this may be the case and provide recommendations for increasing the adoption of these tools. Survey method was used. This is a research method in …

Ethical Implications Of Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning In Libraries And Information Centers: A Frameworks, Challenges, And Best Practices, Sudhakar Mishra
Ethical Implications Of Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning In Libraries And Information Centers: A Frameworks, Challenges, And Best Practices, Sudhakar Mishra
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) is increasingly becoming prevalent in libraries and information centres, promising to improve service delivery and efficiency. However, the use of these technologies also poses significant ethical challenges and risks, including bias and discrimination, privacy and security, automation and job displacement, and the lack of human interaction in service delivery. This conceptual paper provides an overview of the key ethical frameworks and principles relevant to the use of AI and ML in libraries and information centres, and analyses how these frameworks can be applied to this specific context. The paper also …

Dog Guardians’ Subjective Well-Being During Times Of Stress And Crisis: A Diary Study Of Affect During Covid-19, Lori S. Hoy, Brigitte Stangl, Nigel Morgan
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
The impacts of companion animals on human well-being have been receiving increased media and research attention, especially in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously, there have been calls for research to consider the major components of subjective well-being separately and for research designs to include assessments over time. In line with this suggestion, the purpose of this study was to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how being a dog guardian can impact affect and contribute to the overall assessment of subjective well-being. This study used a seven-day diary design to capture 31 dog guardians’ day-to- day feelings and thoughts …
Smart Tv Pairing Interface Using Smart Phone, Dongeek Shin
Smart Tv Pairing Interface Using Smart Phone, Dongeek Shin
Defensive Publications Series
A way to pair a controller to a user device, for example pairing a smart phone to a smart TV to control the smart TV, is described. The user device is pre-programed to interpret a chirp packet that can include encoded commands. The command device is programed to send the chirp packet. For example, if the command packet is a smart phone, the crip packet encoder may be installed via an app.

Applying Thematic Analysis To Analyse Press Coverage In Cross-Country Comparative Research: A Qualitative Study Protocol, Christian Herzog, Peter Kelly
Applying Thematic Analysis To Analyse Press Coverage In Cross-Country Comparative Research: A Qualitative Study Protocol, Christian Herzog, Peter Kelly
Plymouth Institute of Education
The aim of this exploratory study is to investigate similarities and differences in how the press report on school education and policy in England and Germany. For the purpose of analysing relevant regional and national press coverage, we will create four data sets. Inspired by Bourdieu’s theories of the state and work in relation to news media, and applying thematic analysis, we will investigate which specific contents are reported and how issues are covered. To provide contextual information we will also survey who is given voice in the data and which article types are prevalent. Time frame and sample size …

How Did The Landscape Of Student Belonging Shift During Covid-19?, Shruti Misra, Neha Kardam, Jennifer Vanantwerp, Denise Wilson
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
The goal of this study is to understand if and how emergency remote teaching (ERT) used during the COVID-19 pandemic changed the ways in which instructional support and interactions were linked to belonging among engineering students. Belonging is a fundamental human motivation associated with a wide range of positive psychological, educational, social, and job outcomes. Frequent and predominantly conflict-free interactions within a stable, relational framework of caring are required to facilitate belonging. To better understand potential shifts in belonging that occurred from prepandemic to mid-pandemic, this study used survey data from a cross-sectional dataset at a single, large institution comprised …

Type Iv Pilus-Mediated Inhibition Of Acinetobacter Baumannii Biofilm Formation By Phenothiazine Compounds, Nam Vo, Benjamin S. Sidner, Yafan Yu, Kurt H. Piepenbrink
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Infections by pathogenic Acinetobacter species represent a significant burden on the health care system, despite their relative rarity, due to the difficulty of treating infections through oral antibiotics. Multidrug resistance is commonly observed in clinical Acinetobacter infections and multiple molecular mechanisms have been identified for this resistance, including multidrug efflux pumps, carbapenemase enzymes, and the formation of bacterial biofilm in persistent infections. Phenothiazine compounds have been identified as a potential inhibitor of type IV pilus production in multiple Gram-negative bacterial species. Here, we report the ability of two phenothiazines to inhibit type IV pilus-dependent surface (twitching) motility and biofilm formation …

Proving Intra-Racial Discrimination In The U.S. And Canada: The Room For Making The Artificial Distinction Between Genealogical Relatedness And Race, Martin Kwan
University of Miami Inter-American Law Review
This article takes the role of the Devil’s advocate in order to question the judicial willingness to distinguish “race” from comparable notions. It suggests that, depending on the exact circumstances, a defendant can make an arguable case that the alleged intra–racial discrimination is motivated by perceived genealogical relatedness, but not because of belonging to the same “race.” Factually, the defendant claims to believe in being remotely genealogically related to the plaintiff. This is not unworthy of credence, because it is academically recognized that modern genealogy and root tracing can be an imaginative, forged exercise. Legally, this argument is supportable because …
The United States Should Take A Page Out Of Canadian Law When It Comes To Privacy, Genetic And Otherwise, Ashley Rahaim
The United States Should Take A Page Out Of Canadian Law When It Comes To Privacy, Genetic And Otherwise, Ashley Rahaim
University of Miami Inter-American Law Review
Genetic information is intimate and telling data warranting privacy in public and private realms. The privacy protections offered in the United States and Canada vastly differ when it comes to genetic privacy. Search and seizure law mirrors the privacy gap in the countries, as well as their treatment of DNA database information.
This note explores the foreshadowing of the creation of genetic privacy laws and their varying levels of protection based on the way private information was treated by state actors through search and seizure caselaw, the creation of legal precedent, and the treatment of intimate personal data in the …

To The Court Of Last Resort: A Prosecutorial Roadmap In The Aftermath Of State Violence In Chile And Colombia, David F. Scollan
University of Miami Inter-American Law Review
A great deal of academic research and writing has been done on the most glaring examples of war crimes and crimes against humanity. But, only a small cadre of authors have endeavored to identify the ‘lower limit’ of when state action qualifies as these heinous acts. This Note strives to add to that area of legal scholarship aimed at bringing instances of in-country state perpetrated violence out from the behind the veil of sovereign police action and into the spotlight to call them what they are: crimes worthy of international condemnation and punishment. Specifically, this Note unpacks two spasms of …
