Racial Differences And Lived Experiences: Civil Rights Experiences And A Private, Religious, Predominantly White Institution, Anthony Brandon Bates
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: This article explores the expressed thoughts and feelings of 24 research participants who processed and articulated their lived experiences. They each attended the same private, religious, historically, and predominantly White institution and participated in a three-credit course that covered the history of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and '60s, which culminated in an experience in Georgia and Alabama (Civil Rights experience). Methods: In this phenomenological study, the research participants all participated in a semi-structured interview with the same bank of questions. The questions were designed to examine their lived experiences, within the context of participating in the …
Marital Stability In Newlywed Remarried Couple Relationships: Positive Communication And Marital Interactions In Shared Moments Or Activities, Colette Hickman-Evans
Marital Stability In Newlywed Remarried Couple Relationships: Positive Communication And Marital Interactions In Shared Moments Or Activities, Colette Hickman-Evans
Theses and Dissertations
Remarriages are more structurally diverse, last less time, are more vulnerable, and at greater risk for divorce than first marriages. The newlywed stage of marriage is a critical time when relationship patterns are established or reinforced that can impact a relationship for years to come, yet very few studies have examined remarried relationships in the newlywed stage. This study examined the association between marital interaction, positive communication, and marital instability in 348 newlywed remarried couple participants from a nationally representative sample. Using structural equation modeling (SEM) and actor-partner interdependence model with mediation (APIMeM), the findings indicated that positive communication was …

Investigating The Sequence Landscape In The Drosophila Initiator Core Promoter Element Using An Enhanced Marz Algorithm, Jacqueline Dresch, Regan D. Conrad, Daniel Klonaros, Robert Drewell
Investigating The Sequence Landscape In The Drosophila Initiator Core Promoter Element Using An Enhanced Marz Algorithm, Jacqueline Dresch, Regan D. Conrad, Daniel Klonaros, Robert Drewell
Biology
The core promoter elements are important DNA sequences for the regulation of RNA polymerase II transcription in eukaryotic cells. Despite the broad evolutionary conservation of these elements, there is extensive variation in the nucleotide composition of the actual sequences. In this study, we aim to improve our understanding of the complexity of this sequence variation in the TATA box and initiator core promoter elements in Drosophila melanogaster. Using computational approaches, including an enhanced version of our previously developed MARZ algorithm that utilizes gapped nucleotide matrices, several sequence landscape features are uncovered, including an interdependency between the nucleotides in position 2 …

Evaluating The Penetrance Of Pathogenic Genetic Variants Associated With Premature Ovarian Insufficiency, Jdc Pereira Baptista
Evaluating The Penetrance Of Pathogenic Genetic Variants Associated With Premature Ovarian Insufficiency, Jdc Pereira Baptista
Peninsula Medical School
Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) affects 1% of women and is a leading cause of infertility. It is often considered to be a monogenic disorder, with pathogenic variants in ~100 genes described in the literature. We sought to systematically evaluate the penetrance of variants in these genes using exome sequence data in 104,733 women from the UK Biobank, 2,231 (1.14%) of whom reported at natural menopause under the age of 40 years. We found limited evidence to support any previously reported autosomal dominant effect. For nearly all heterozygous effects on previously reported POI genes, we ruled out even modest penetrance, with …

Defining Diurnal Fluctuations In Mouse Choroid Plexus And Csf At High Molecular, Spatial, And Temporal Resolution, Ryann M Fame, Yong Zhang, Michael J Holtzman, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Transmission and secretion of signals via the choroid plexus (ChP) brain barrier can modulate brain states via regulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) composition. Here, we developed a platform to analyze diurnal variations in male mouse ChP and CSF. Ribosome profiling of ChP epithelial cells revealed diurnal translatome differences in metabolic machinery, secreted proteins, and barrier components. Using ChP and CSF metabolomics and blood-CSF barrier analyses, we observed diurnal changes in metabolites and cellular junctions. We then focused on transthyretin (TTR), a diurnally regulated thyroid hormone chaperone secreted by the ChP. Diurnal variation in ChP TTR depended on Bmal1 clock gene …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Businesses worldwide closed to lessen the spread of the virus. Due to an increased need for specialized services compared to the general population, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) may have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19 shutdowns. Without access to schools and centers where services are provided, therapeutic progress was halted. Services, such as special education, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, were paused, impacting access and maintenance for individuals with I/DD. In addition, services that continued did so using modified delivery methods such as telehealth. To investigate the impact of the COVID-19 …

Introduction Lebanon has battled the COVID-19 pandemic in the midst of an economic crisis. The evolution of the pandemic and a fragile health system have meant that public health policy has had to rely heavily on non-pharmaceutical interventions for disease control. However, changes in disease dynamics, an unraveling economy, and pandemic fatigue have meant that disease control policies need to be updated. Methods Using recent and timely data on older (50 years and above) Syrian refugees in Lebanon, this paper uses multivariate linear probability models to explore the determinants of adherence to two non-pharmaceutical COVID-19 prevention measures (wearing a mask …

Refill Friction Stir Fastener Repair In Aa7050-T7451, Andrew John Curtis
Refill Friction Stir Fastener Repair In Aa7050-T7451, Andrew John Curtis
Theses and Dissertations
The majority of Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding (RFSSW) is used to join two materials together oriented in a lap joint configuration. In this study, RFSSW was investigated and tested using an unconventional configuration setup, a hole/plug insertion approach. RFSSW was tested as a means of repairing a cracked rivet hole due to excessive use conditions. This was done by inserting a plug into a hole and using the RFSSW process to bond the plug to the base material. Machine and tool limits were investigated to determine if a refilled plug repair was possible and if complete mixing between plug/hole …

The combination of radiation therapy (RT) and immunotherapy has emerged as a promising treatment option in oncology. Historically, x-ray radiation (XRT) has been the most commonly used form of RT. However, proton beam therapy (PBT) is gaining recognition as a viable alternative, as it has been shown to produce similar outcomes to XRT while minimizing off-target effects. The effects of PBT on the antitumor immune response have only just begun to be described, and to our knowledge no studies to date have examined the effect of PBT as part of a combinatorial immunoradiotherapeutic strategy. Here, using a 2-tumor model of …
The Performative History Of Tomboys In Anglophone Literature Prior To Little Women, Kimber Palmer
The Performative History Of Tomboys In Anglophone Literature Prior To Little Women, Kimber Palmer
Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines the expansive history of literary tomboys in the century preceding Louisa May Alcott's Little Women (1868). Applying concepts from gender performativity theory, it explores earlier and previously overlooked portrayals of tomboys (or, alternatively, "hoydens" or "romps"), especially in Richard Brinsley Sheridan's A Trip to Scarborough (1777), Isaac Bickerstaffe's The Romp; A Comic Opera in Two Acts (1786), Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey (1817), and E.D.E.N. Southworth's The Hidden Hand (1859). Because the tomboy phenomenon emphasizes that gender roles must be learned and can be resisted, tomboy characters are …

Health Policy & Community Health: Faculty Publications
Evidence shows that older patients with advance directives such as a living will, or durable power of attorney for healthcare, are more likely to receive care consistent with their preferences at the end of life. Less is known about the use of advance directives between veteran and non-veteran older Americans. Using data from the decedents of a longitudinal survey, we explore whether there is a difference in having an established advance directive between the veteran and non-veteran decedents. Data were taken from the Harmonized End of Life data sets, a linked collection of variables derived from the Health and Retirement …

Edf And Short Selling As Indicator Of Default, Huiyang Li
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation presents two papers that examine the efficacy of expected default frequency (EDF) when predicting bankruptcy events and whether short-selling utilization could be used as an indicator of default risk change. The first paper examines the efficacy of Merton's (1974) distance to default model as simplified by Bharath and Shumway (2008) to forecast a firm’s Expected Default Frequency (EDF) or probability of defaulting on debt obligations. Merton’s model, further developed by the KMV corporation, is based on the Black-Scholes asset pricing model. We apply the simplified Bharath and Shumway model by relating it with Cox’s proportional-hazards model (Cox, 1972) …
