From Bean To Cup: Sustainability Practices In A Small Specialty Coffee Roaster, Reese Weathersby
From Bean To Cup: Sustainability Practices In A Small Specialty Coffee Roaster, Reese Weathersby
Accounting Undergraduate Honors Theses
Sustainability has become an increasingly important issue in the coffee industry as businesses
face growing pressure to balance profitability with environmental and social responsibility.
While much of the existing research focuses on large corporations and global supply chains, less
attention has been given to how small independent businesses approach sustainability with fewer
resources and different operational constraints. This study examines Doomsday Coffee Roasters,
a small specialty coffee business in Northwest Arkansas, to better understand how sustainability
is practiced at the local level.
Using a qualitative case study approach, the research focuses on four areas of operation: ethical
sourcing, roasting practices, …
Culturally Inclusive Usability Engineering (Ciue): A Framework For Evaluating Cultural Inclusion In Study Abroad Platforms, Louis Muhammad
Culturally Inclusive Usability Engineering (Ciue): A Framework For Evaluating Cultural Inclusion In Study Abroad Platforms, Louis Muhammad
Master's Theses
Study abroad programs provide students with opportunities to develop global com- petence and intercultural understanding. However, the digital platforms that support these programs often fail to communicate information that reflects the cultural and faith-based needs of diverse student populations. While prior research in Human-Computer Interac- tion (HCI) and usability engineering has explored cross-cultural and accessible design, cultural and religious considerations are rarely integrated into usability engineering pro- cesses. This thesis introduces the Culturally Inclusive Usability Engineering (CIUE) frame- work, which extends traditional usability engineering by integrating culturally informed con- siderations into the system development lifecycle. CIUE begins by identifying the …

Narrating Experience: How Undergraduate Social Work Students See Themselves In The Social Justice Curriculum, Emily C. Soener
Narrating Experience: How Undergraduate Social Work Students See Themselves In The Social Justice Curriculum, Emily C. Soener
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Social justice is widely recognized as a foundational value of the social work profession, yet research indicates inconsistencies in how social justice is defined, taught, and experienced within social work education. This study examines how undergraduate social work students make meaning of social justice learning in relation to their own lived experiences. Using a critical narrative inquiry approach grounded in constructivist qualitative methodology, this study explores how students narrate their experiences of social justice education and how those narratives reveal tensions between professional ideals and classroom realities. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eleven undergraduate social work students enrolled …
Treatment And Interventions For Sexual Assault In Humanitarian Contexts: Addressing Gaps In Refugee And Idp Camp Care In Myanmar, Erin Nash
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) remains a pervasive yet under-addressed issue in humanitarian settings. Refugee and internally displaced person (IDP) camps along the Thai– Myanmar border represent a complex nexus of protracted displacement, ethnic conflict, and limited access to medical and psychosocial care. Although the prevalence of sexual assault in these contexts is well-documented, there is a critical gap in the literature regarding effective, context-specific treatment and intervention strategies. This capstone project conducts a comprehensive review of existing research on sexual assault care in humanitarian crises worldwide and assesses its applicability to displaced ethnic minorities from Myanmar. The analysis considers …

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
The 2025 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) shows that over 11% of adults in Finney County, Kansas, have diabetes, which surpasses both state and national averages. Census data from 2016-2020 indicate that 42.6% of residents ages five and older speak a language other than English at home, and 36.1% speak Spanish (United States Census Bureau, n.d.). The CHNA further highlights concerns about language and cultural barriers to care, especially among the Spanish-speaking population. Notably, 21.74% of residents have limited English proficiency—much higher than the state’s 12.1% (CHNA, 2025).
This capstone will develop a theory-based social media campaign plan to support …
Gestational Diabetes And Social Determinants Of Health In Black Women, Darianne Greenwood
Gestational Diabetes And Social Determinants Of Health In Black Women, Darianne Greenwood
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) poses significant health risks, specifically increasing the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes post-delivery, as well as increasing the risk of adverse neonatal and maternal outcomes. Black women, in particular, experience disproportionately higher rates of GDM incidence, severity, and complications in comparison to White women. Biological factors alone do not account for these disparities, necessitating a deeper examination into how systemic factors, particularly the social environment, influence these inequitable health outcomes. The purpose of this comprehensive literature review is to answer the question: “How do the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH), such as residential segregation, food …

A Literature Review Of Estrogen Synthesis And Metabolizing Enzymes Produced By The Human Gut Microbiome And Their Correlation With Cancer, Rebecca Cederberg
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
The link between estrogen and cancer initiation or progression has been well established; such that the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO IARC) has classified several estrogen therapies and estrogenic compounds as group 1 carcinogens. Estrogen and/or its receptors have been associated with reproductive cancers such as breast, ovarian, endometrial, and prostate, as well as lymphomas, lung, and colon cancers. Additionally, elevated levels of estrogen and altered gut microbiomes are also associated with increased rates of breast cancer. More recently, microbial genes that are capable of synthesizing estrogen and deconjugating estrogen metabolites have been identified, and …

A Common Pool Of Privacy Problems: Legal And Technical Lessons From A Large-Scale Web-Scraped Machine Learning Dataset, Rachel Hong, Jevan Hutson, William Agnew, Imaad Huda, Tadayoshi Kohno, Jamie Morgenstern
Articles
We investigate the contents of web-scraped data for training AI systems, at sizes where human dataset curators and compilers no longer manually annotate every sample. Building off of prior privacy concerns in machine learning models, we ask: What are the legal privacy implications of web-scraped machine learning datasets? In an empirical study of a popular training dataset, we find significant presence of personally identifiable information despite sanitization efforts. Our audit provides concrete evidence to support the concern that any large-scale web-scraped dataset may contain personal data. We use these findings of a real-world dataset to inform our legal analysis with …

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
This thesis is a study on women’s religious communities, and the vernacularized traditions practiced by the women themselves from a folkloric perspective. Examining the creative and meaningful ways women find to interact with their faith on a daily basis, this thesis proposes a natural cycle of religious participation which allows the women to move between active and passive participation roles within their religious communities, and creates equitable spaces for women by relying on the communal reciprocity of the group.
By focusing on individual women and their experiences and belief practices as part of a larger community of religious practice, this …
Open Space Management Planning: A Framework And Case Study From Eagle Mountain City, Utah, Nathan K. Shumway
Open Space Management Planning: A Framework And Case Study From Eagle Mountain City, Utah, Nathan K. Shumway
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Open Space Management Plans (OSMPs) are increasingly used by municipalities to guide the long-term stewardship of natural lands; however, little formal guidance exists regarding how these plans are structured, developed, or organized in practice. While numerous OSMPs are publicly available, their compositional logic, procedural workflows, and thematic priorities remain largely undocumented within academic literature. This study addresses that gap through a qualitative document analysis of fifteen publicly accessible OSMPs from the western United States, published between 2015 and 2024.
Using manual matrix-based coding in Microsoft Excel, each plan was analyzed through three lenses: structural composition, procedural development, and thematic content. …

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Purpose:
This study examined longitudinal changes in /ɹ/ production (i.e., the “r” sound) among 14 children aged five to seven at risk for persistent speech sound disorders (SSDs). Children at risk for SSDs show slower or atypical development of /ɹ/, yet little is known about which early patterns predict persistent difficulty, making it difficult for clinicians to prioritize caseloads and provide timely intervention. Using perceptual accuracy ratings across varied /ɹ/ contexts, we modeled growth in /ɹ/ accuracy across different word contexts and evaluated the extent to which early accuracy and changes in /ɹ/production predicted mastery at age seven.
Methods:
Longitudinal …

In This World: A Scalable Methodology For Scenic Design, Michael W. D. Francis
In This World: A Scalable Methodology For Scenic Design, Michael W. D. Francis
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
This thesis examines how strong scenic design emerges not from how something looks, but from a clear understanding of how its world works. Rather than starting from aesthetic preference or visual trends, it outlines a process that identifies a central idea within a story and uses that idea to shape a cohesive spatial environment. By focusing on how a world behaves - what drives it, what resists change, and how its internal logic operates - design decisions begin to align, creating work that feels intentional rather than assembled. Through a series of production case studies, it evaluates how that process …
Uncanniness In Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, Seth L. Callor
Uncanniness In Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, Seth L. Callor
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
This thesis explores how Toni Morrison’s 1970 novel The Bluest Eye has a feature called the uncanny. Uncanniness, as originally explained by Sigmund Freud, is when something that was familiar becomes unsettlingly unfamiliar in a way that was likely once repressed. Other thinkers have since talked about how the uncanny is used in stories to question how their demographics are oppressed. Following their example, this thesis explains how The Bluest Eye is an example of using the uncanny to question harmful ways of seeing. Through demonstrating how The Bluest Eye uses obviously uncanny things like dolls and moves to more …

“Women Vs. Perfection:” A Pentadic Analysis Of Toxicity In Online Gaming, Niyayesh Arshadnia
“Women Vs. Perfection:” A Pentadic Analysis Of Toxicity In Online Gaming, Niyayesh Arshadnia
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
This thesis utilizes a mixed-methods approach to examine an online video game player community as a case study to diagnose the underlying reason for widespread hostile behavior, especially towards women, among players in the online gaming sphere. The application of dramatism, a rhetorical theory that breaks down human behavior into elements of drama, reveals that the gaming industry and gaming culture are the likely perpetuators of this issue due to the environments they create and the behaviors they reward. This project is a diagnostic step towards rhetorically alleviating the exclusionary attitude of users in online gaming spaces through further research.
