"Adaptive Signal Control For Reducing The Effect Of Queue Spillback", Eamlong Tang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Urban traffic congestion at signalized intersections poses significant challenges, with queue spillback events worsening delays, fuel consumption, and environmental impacts. This study addresses the critical issue of oversaturation at the Rama 4 intersection in Bangkok, where closely spaced intersections intensify congestion, leading to prolonged queues and inefficient green phase utilization. Traditional fixed-time signal controls lack the flexibility to adapt to fluctuating traffic volumes, emphasizing the need for an innovative approach. This research proposes an Adaptive Signal Control (ASC) scheme, utilizing VISSIM and VISVAP simulation tools to evaluate the system’s efficacy in managing real-time traffic conditions and reducing queue spillback events. …

Private Motorcycle Users' Insights Toward Public Bus Adoption In Phnom Penh, Eangthay Tang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
As Phnom Penh experiences rapid population growth and economic expansion, traffic congestion has worsened, largely due to the increasing ownership of private motorcycles. Despite the introduction of public bus services, adoption remains low as concerns over service quality, limited coverage, and inadequate infrastructure deter motorcycle users from making the shift. This study investigates the behavioral intentions, preferences, and concerns of motorcycle users, specifically targeting university students, to understand how public bus services can be improved to encourage adoption. Data were collected in July 2024 from 457 university students who regularly use motorcycles, using a structured questionnaire across four Phnom Penh …

Undocumented Immigrant Intervention Training For Counselors: A Quasi-Experimental Study On The Msjcc And Ethnic Tolerance, Pamela Fullerton

The number of immigrants coming to the United States has tripled since the 1970s (Budiman, 2020). Due to various global and international factors, the numbers of immigrants arriving to the United States continues to increase yearly (Ward and Batalova, 2023). Of the 45+ million immigrants currently in the United States, more than 11 million are undocumented (Budiman, 2020; Chhabra et al., 2023). Research has found that being an undocumented immigrant in the United States comes with many additional challenges and limitations including financial, health, educational, and legal barriers (Allweiss & Hilado, 2018; Capps et al., 2013; Chhabra et al., 2023; …

Inheriting Shame: A Critical Analysis Of “The Eugenics Review”, Brygette R. Kunde
All Student Theses and Dissertations
The Eugenic Society was a group of self-proclaimed "Race-Improvers" who came together intending to better humanity by founding The Eugenics Society and producing, "The Eugenics Review,” a publication that circulated throughout the United States from 1909 until 1968. Eugenicists wrote on diverse topics surrounding race betterment by introducing scientific methods that were both inhumane and injustice based on their parochial, perceived notions that inequalities are ubiquitous. Categories like religion, race, class, nationality, gender, and many others have been the sources of stigmatization, discrimination, and conflict throughout the centuries in the United States. Assessing the development of the eugenics movement is …

Female Marine veterans are a group that intersects two at-risk populations, Marines and female veterans, and the potential struggles associated with them. Marine veterans have among the highest rates of suicide after transition, as well as one of the highest military sexual trauma (MST) rates. Studies indicate that women veterans are at risk for intimate partner violence (IPV), housing instability, and PTSD. Additionally, various social factors impact female veterans, such as a lack of familial support. There are many studies on the overall transitional experiences of the military and even some that evaluate experiences of female service members, but information …
Protective Factors Among Native Born And Immigrant Undergraduate And Graduate Students Enrolled In American Colleges: Predictive Validity Of Acculturation, Family Involvement, Academic Persistence, Grit, And Sense Of Belonging, Agnieszka Tulowiecka
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Achieving higher education goals and becoming acculturated to the social and economic values of the U.S. is critical for the success of immigrants. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, immigrants are estimated to account for 93% of the nation's workforce population growth over the next three decades (Pew, 2013). However, much of the existing empirical work on postsecondary outcomes among immigrant youth mainly focuses on the challenges and deficits faced by this group, as well as differences between racial/ethnic categories. This This emphasis might potentially mask within-group differences (e.g., ethnic/regional variations) that arise from unique pre- and …

Finding Harmony: The Lived Experiences Of African Americans Who Have Participated In Emotionally Focused Therapy, Jennifer R. Young
All Student Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of African Americans who have participated in emotionally focused therapy (EFT) within the past 2 years. Despite EFT's recognized effectiveness in fostering secure attachments and emotional expressiveness among distressed couples, there is a significant gap in research concerning its application within the African American community. This study addressed this gap by examining the personal narratives of six African American individuals, focusing on how EFT influenced their emotional expression and interpersonal relationships. The research identified four prominent themes: Transformation and Growth, Initial Apprehension and Fear, Cultural Sensitivity and Therapeutic Alliance, and Normalization and …

Optimization Of An Immune Assay To Detect Binding Of Nod2 To Staphylococcus Aureus, Precious Mckenzie
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Staphylococcus aureus, a gram-positive, commensal bacterium, is the cause of a multitude of opportunistic diseases and infections. While S. aureus has evolved ways to escape innate immune responses in the host, the mechanisms are not fully understood. One area of active research involves mechanisms by which S. aureus avoids detection by Pattern Recognition Receptors (PRRs), such as Nuclear Oligomerization Domain 2 (NOD2), present on the surface of and inside innate immune cells. This study aimed to design and optimize an assay that can be utilized to investigate S. aureus components that contribute to the activation of NOD2 receptors. The …

An Exploration Of The Lived Experiences Of Counselors Who Integrate Spirituality And Religion Into Therapy With African American Clients: A Phenomenological Study, Curissa Sutherland-Smith
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Spirituality is important when it comes to a client's identity, mental health functioning, treatment planning, recovery, and prevention work. However, in the United States, there tends to be a separation between the sacred and the secular. Integrating spirituality within the therapeutic setting is among counselor education and professional practices' most challenging and misunderstood areas (Stebnicki, 2017). A phenomenological qualitative design was used to collect data from participants. The study allowed licensed clinical professional counselors to discuss their experiences related to how they incorporate spirituality into their counseling sessions and how their perception and experience with the Black/African American community impacted …

In “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, “Good Country People”, and “The Displaced Person” Flannery O’Connor highlights the choices people make within that violence can directly affect the results of that violence. Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five, through the character of Billy Pilgrim, extends choices around violence even further, suggesting that inaction is sometimes the best plan. Cormac McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men highlights how a combination of action and inaction, depending on the situation, can help or hurt someone when violence surrounds them.
Random Forests Regression For Soft Interval Data, Paul Gaona-Partida, Chih-Ching Yeh, Yan Sun, Adele Cutler
Random Forests Regression For Soft Interval Data, Paul Gaona-Partida, Chih-Ching Yeh, Yan Sun, Adele Cutler
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Analyzing soft interval data for uncertainty quantification has attracted much attention recently. Within this context, regression methods for interval data have been extensively studied. As most existing works focus on linear models, it is important to note that many problems in practice are nonlinear in nature and the development of nonlinear regression tools for interval data is crucial. This paper proposes an interval-valued random forests model that defines the splitting criterion of variance reduction based on an L2 type metric in the space of compact intervals. The model simultaneously considers the centers and ranges of the interval data as …

This report focuses on seven water quality measurements taken at 43 different depths on the Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho for the months of June - November in the years 2018 - 2023. These measurements create a high-dimensional dataset on which we apply state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) techniques to look for low-dimensional structure in the data. A similar effort was made for weather measurements taken near the lake. Our analysis reveals that water quality measurements tend to cluster (i.e., group together) by year, while weather measurements tend to cluster by time of the year. This in mind, we explore potential drivers of …
Sweeping General Jurisdiction Under The Specific Jurisdiction Rug: A Doctrinal Map Of The Contraction And Expansion Of Personal Jurisdiction As Told By Ford, Amy L. Moore
Law Faculty Scholarship
This Article provides a doctrinal mapping of the Supreme Court’s modern personal jurisdiction jurisprudence through the lens of Ford Motor Co. v. Montana Eighth Judicial District Court. Tracing the evolution of specific and general jurisdiction from International Shoe through Bristol-Myers Squibb, the Article examines how the Court’s articulation of the “arise out of or relate to” requirement has shifted over time. While Ford purported to clarify the relationship prong of specific jurisdiction, the Article argues that the decision instead destabilizes the doctrinal boundary between specific and general jurisdiction. By reinvigorating the “relate to” language without articulating clear limiting …

Developing robust professional networks can help shape the trajectories of early career scientists. Yet, historical inequities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields make access to these networks highly variable across academic programmes, and senior academics often have little time for mentoring. Here, we illustrate the success of a virtual Laboratory Meeting Programme (LaMP). In this programme, we matched students (mentees) with a more experienced scientist (mentors) from a research group. The mentees then attended the mentors’ laboratory meetings during the academic year with two laboratory meetings specifically dedicated to the mentee’s professional development. Survey results indicate that mentees …

Species conservation and management benefit from precise understanding of natural patterns of dispersal and genetic variation. Using recent advances in indirect genetic methods applied to both adult plants and dispersed seeds, we find that the mean seed dispersal in a threatened marine foundation plant (the eelgrass Zostera marina) is approximately 100-200 m. This distance is surprisingly more similar to that of wind-dispersed terrestrial seeds (~10s to 100s of meters) than the passive dispersal of marine propagules via currents (~10s to 100s of kilometres). Because nearshore marine plants like Zostera are commonly distributed across strong selective gradients driven by bathymetry (depth) …

Orthodoxy In Ukraine: Strategies Of Reconciliation, Tetiana Havryliuk, Yuriy Chornomorets, Vasyl Lozovytskyi
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article analyzes the inter-Orthodox conflict in Ukraine in the context of the search for ways of reconciliation. The path to reconciliation is shown to be a fundamental Christian principle capable of overcoming serious reasons for enmity and hatred, as has been repeatedly demonstrated in history. The potential of the concept of "open Orthodoxy" in the formation of a new culture of inter-Christian dialogue and coexistence is revealed, the implementation of which can ensure Ukraine not only the unity of Ukrainian Orthodoxy, but also the unity of the Ukrainian people. The role of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious …

(Non)Ordination Of Women In The Evangelical Lutheran Church Of Latvia: Response Of Partner Churches, Dace Balode, Valdis Tēraudkalns
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
This article uses archival sources and other materials to analyze opinions in order to reconstruct events and responses, and to reveal theological arguments used by various sides in the debates on the ordination of women within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia (ELCL). The primary interest of authors has been to provide a comprehensive historical exposition. In studying historical documents, authors employ classical methods like identifying the origin and context of documents, as well as using generic, comparative, and content analysis. Secondly, authors are exploring how the issue of women's ordination has impacted the ELCL's relationships with its partners, and …
The Man From Figueras, Chris Burnside
The Man From Figueras, Chris Burnside
The Man from Figueras
Chris Burnside is an artist/choreographer who was inspired to tell stories on stage after seeing performance artist Spalding Gray at an international theater festival in the early 1980s. After retirement and with the encouragement of a lifelong friend, Mr. Burnside started writing some of those stories down, eventually including others. The stories in The Man from Figueras focus on learning experiences, aha moments, and events that have, over the years, changed his perspective and shaped how he has lived his life. The ninety stories are in chronological order and are grouped by the eight decades of his life.
Burnside attended …

The Scales Project: Making Federal Court Records Free, Christopher A. Cotropia

Federal court records have been available online for nearly a quarter century, yet they remain frustratingly inaccessible to the public. This is due to two primary barriers: (1) the federal government’s prohibitively high fees to access the records at scale and (2) the unwieldy state of the records themselves, which are mostly text documents scattered across numerous systems. Official datasets produced by the judiciary, as well as third-party data collection efforts, are incomplete, inaccurate, and similarly inaccessible to the public. The result is a de facto data blackout that leaves an entire branch of the federal government shielded from empirical …
Popular Constitutionalism Inside The Courts: The Search For Popular Meaning, Thomas G. Donnelly
Popular Constitutionalism Inside The Courts: The Search For Popular Meaning, Thomas G. Donnelly

While commentators celebrate (or lament) the rise of originalism on the Roberts Court, another theory may prove as important to the future of constitutional law: popular constitutionalism. In a range of recent cases, Justices from across the ideological spectrum have proven themselves open to using sources of popular authority to address important constitutional issues. This is especially true of the two Justices at the Roberts Court’s ideological center: John Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh. Even so, the question remains how best to make popular constitutionalism work inside the courts. This question has vexed popular constitutionalists since the theory’s inception. In my …
