Decolonizing Disability In Social Work: A Conversation On Colonialism, Autumn Asher Blackdeer Jan 2024

Decolonizing Disability In Social Work: A Conversation On Colonialism, Autumn Asher Blackdeer

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The present work seeks to prompt a paradigm shift in the conceptualization of disability within social work through three main goals: a) Problematize the dominant disability discourse in social work, b) Illuminate present day manifestations of settler colonialism and their intersection with disability in social work, and c) Introduce decolonization and its compatibility with disability justice to reckon with disability and colonialism in social work. First, the present work will illuminate social work’s dedication to the medical model, evidence-based practice, and hollow notions of empowerment and inclusion. Next, in viewing intersections of ableism with other forms of oppression, this work …

Protecting Free Speech In Social Media: A Pathway To Self-Determination In International Law, Sydney Marie Harley Jan 2024

Protecting Free Speech In Social Media: A Pathway To Self-Determination In International Law, Sydney Marie Harley

Emory International Law Review Recent Developments

With the growth of Internet and social media usage, state regulatory action to surveil and censor citizens is running rampant. As the principle of self-determination stands, minority populations are typically bearing the brunt of these attacks, receiving little protection under domestic and international law. Self-determination within international law must be restructured into a definitive pathway that includes protecting the freedom of speech to encourage discourse and tolerance between the State and its minority populations. This article proposes a solution that could fill the gap in international law formed by insufficient domestic rule in States that neglect to protect these populations …

Pneumothorax Detection And Segmentation From Chest X-Ray Radiographs Using A Patch-Based Fully Convolutional Encoder-Decoder Network, Jakov Ivan S. Dumbrique, Reynan Hernandez, Juan Miguel L. Cruz, Ryan M. Pagdanganan, Prospero C. Naval

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Pneumothorax, a life-threatening condition characterized by air accumulation in the pleural cavity, requires early and accurate detection for optimal patient outcomes. Chest X-ray radiographs are a common diagnostic tool due to their speed and affordability. However, detecting pneumothorax can be challenging for radiologists because the sole visual indicator is often a thin displaced pleural line. This research explores deep learning techniques to automate and improve the detection and segmentation of pneumothorax from chest X-ray radiographs. We propose a novel architecture that combines the advantages of fully convolutional neural networks (FCNNs) and Vision Transformers (ViTs) while using only convolutional modules to …

The Activation Of Anti-Asian Attitudes On Vote Choice, Nathan Chan, Vivien Leung Jan 2024

The Activation Of Anti-Asian Attitudes On Vote Choice, Nathan Chan, Vivien Leung

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

Political science research has assessed how racial attitudes influence political behavior. However, less is known about the political effects of anti-Asian views, even as anti-Asian sentiment resurfaced during the pandemic. We theorize that the linkage of COVID-19 to Asian Americans by political elites activated anti-Asian animosity and shaped vote choice during the 2020 election. Using cross-sectional over time and panel data from the American National Election Studies, we find that holding more anti-Asian attitudes was not associated with Republican vote choice between 2008–2016, including when Donald Trump first ran. However, anti-Asian views became strongly related to voting for Trump in …

Over the last decades, theoretical perspectives in the interdisciplinary field of the affective sciences have proliferated rather than converged due to differing assumptions about what human affective phenomena are and how they work. These metaphysical and mechanistic assumptions, shaped by academic context and values, have dictated affective constructs and operationalizations. However, an assumption about the purpose of affective phenomena can guide us to a common set of metaphysical and mechanistic assumptions. In this capstone paper, we home in on a nested teleological principle for human affective phenomena in order to synthesize metaphysical and mechanistic assumptions. Under this framework, human affective …

Changes In Parent-Student Text Message And Phone Call Communication During The Transition To College As Predictors Of Cannabis And Simultaneous Use During The First Year, Reed M. Morgan, Bradley M. Trager, Sarah C. Boyle, Layla M. Rainosek, Joseph W. Labrie

Psychological Science Faculty Works

Parent communication can be protective against cannabis use among young adults. However, changes in parent-student communication frequency naturally occur during the transition from high school to college. Recent research suggests declines in parent-student communication frequency predict increased drinking and consequences during the first year of college, yet these effects on other risky behaviors are unknown. The current study investigated whether post-matriculation changes in frequency of texting/calling with parents predict cannabis use and simultaneous use of cannabis and alcohol, and whether pre-matriculation cannabis and simultaneous use predict changes in communication. First-year students (N = 287, 61.3% female, 50.9% White) reported cannabis …

An Ml-Assisted Golden-Free Hardware Trojan Localization And Detection Approach For Trusted Microelectronics, Ashutosh Ghimire

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Hardware Trojans are malicious circuits, hidden in integrated circuits (ICs) which pose a significant threat to security. Detection of hardware Trojans is important to build trust, verify, and make the semiconductor ICs process secure. The existing hardware Trojan detection methods are generally destructive, require intricate comparisons, or require a long time for reverse engineering. In the initial phase of this study, the substitution of supervised hardware Trojan detection methods in ASICs chips is explored with unsupervised approaches, thereby eliminating the dependence on golden references. The Trojan detection uses a ring oscillator (RO) based on NAND as the power monitor. Frequency …

Declining Approval In The Supreme Court Of The United States, Gabriella Thompson Jan 2024

Declining Approval In The Supreme Court Of The United States, Gabriella Thompson

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

American citizens are granted several freedoms by the Bill of Rights in the United States Constitution. The First Amendment established protections for the rights of assembly, petition, press, religion, and speech, the lattermost of which enables people to express ideas without fear of suppression from their government. Therefore, the general public is empowered to hold various opinions about the institutions that wield authority over them. Measuring public opinion is a crucial endeavor to those in power, as such work yields intuition for how different branches of government are perceived over time. The federal judiciary is helmed by the Supreme Court …

Mitigating Cyber Espionage: A Network Security Strategy Using Notifications, Claire Headland Jan 2024

Mitigating Cyber Espionage: A Network Security Strategy Using Notifications, Claire Headland

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Network security and its mitigation of cyber espionage is paramount to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data within the intelligence field. With the advancing efficacy of social engineering to execute cyber espionage attacks, further measures and fail-safe mechanisms have become necessary. If a malicious actor successfully penetrates the network, suspending confidential data transmissions over the compromised network becomes crucial. However, connected users need a platform to receive security notifications and, therefore, need to know that their continued network use compromises more data. This project eliminates this by achieving two primary objectives: designing a multi- layered, hardened, and segmented network …

Healing Prayer, L. Ann Hamel Jan 2024

Healing Prayer, L. Ann Hamel

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

A major theme of both the Old and New Testaments is that of healing and restoration. The Old Testament teaches that it is God who heals (Deut 32:39; Exod 15:26), while the New Testament presents Jesus’ ministry as one of healing and restoration (Luke 4:18-19). Healing was clearly a major theme in Christ’s earthly ministry with biblical scholars reporting that approximately one fifth of gospel texts relate stories of Christ’s healing miracles. The Bible teaches that not only did Jesus heal but he gave his disciples the power and authority to heal in his name, thus empowering the church to …

Ecclesiological Meaning In Jesus’ Sabbath Healings, Sven Östring Jan 2024

Ecclesiological Meaning In Jesus’ Sabbath Healings, Sven Östring

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

The earthly life and ministry of Jesus Christ was the full incarnation of his divine identity and mission. However, certain events and situations became windows that allowed his relationship with his Father and his divine mission to be revealed with clarity to those around him. In particular, Jesus saw in the Sabbath a unique and regular opportunity to reveal both his identity and his mission. Likewise, his opponents understood, with almost surprising accuracy and clarity, what he was communicating about himself from his religiously non-conforming actions on Sabbath. However, this was not just a minor ethical scuffle between a well-studied …

Implementing Timothy Keller’S Center Church Principles: Transforming Your Church Into A Center Of Influence, Danie Potgieter

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

In contemporary religious discourse, the concept of a church transcending its traditional role as a mere congregation to become a dynamic center of influence within its community has gained significant traction. This paradigm shift, often fueled by a desire to engage with societal issues and impact lives beyond the church walls, finds resonance in Timothy Keller’s Center Church: Doing Balanced, Gospel-Centered Ministry in Your City. Grounded in theological depth and practical wisdom, Keller presents a compelling framework for transforming churches into vibrant hubs of influence capable of effecting meaningful change in the world around them.

Biblical And Theological Principles For Ministry To The Deaf And Other Isolated Groups, Joseph Jacobson Jan 2024

Biblical And Theological Principles For Ministry To The Deaf And Other Isolated Groups, Joseph Jacobson

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

Deaf people are one of the largest unreached groups in the world (Lowenstein 2019, para. 2). To reach this group with the gospel, it is vital to build a solid biblical foundation for ministry to deaf individuals. The knowledge of God and the importance of faith, hope, and trust in God are often limited among deaf communities despite technological advancements (Broesterhuizen 2005:307). It is essential to show the different groups of deaf communities scattered around the world that Jesus loves them and that “the Bible is at heart a text that is positive for all marginalized people, whether poor, or …

Evaluation Of A Blockchain-Based Prescription System And Data Source For National Research And Development, Sean Chan, Aedin Clay, Lance Tan, Christian E. Pulmano

Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications

In the Philippines, healthcare providers, government agencies, and research institutions use data from patient prescriptions to generate reports for health planning and decision-making. However, current e-prescription systems have vulnerabilities, including erroneous information, hacking attempts, a single point of failure, and medical fraud. In addition to affecting the quality of data reporting, these issues violate a patient's rights to data privacy. One promising solution is a blockchain-based prescription system. Blockchain's immutable ledger accurately traces medical fraud and erroneous information, while its decentralized nature reduces the impact of failures. Performance is an important consideration, as healthcare systems need to be scalable and …
