Previous studies have shown that a lack of follow-up from a child’s care team affects the level of usage of an assistive technology device. Occupational therapy plays a role in improving this carryover. The present study investigates the use of the Go Baby Go powered ride on toy vehicles and their ability to promote children’s independence, mobility, exploration, and participation in play through caregiver interviews. The Government Speech Doctrine Ate My Class: First Amendment Capture And Curriculum Bans, Caroline Mala Corbin Jan 2024

The Government Speech Doctrine Ate My Class: First Amendment Capture And Curriculum Bans, Caroline Mala Corbin

Articles

Because of the government speech doctrine, public school curriculum restrictions like “Don’t Say Gay” mandates and bans on teaching critical race theory may escape free speech review. This exemplifies “First Amendment capture.” The term “capture” comes from “agency capture,” which occurs when regulated entities effectively gain control over the agency meant to oversee them. First Amendment capture occurs when speech becomes controlled by the government when the Free Speech Clause should be regulating the government.

Generally, laws that censor content trigger strict scrutiny under the Free Speech Clause. Curriculum bans, however, may trigger no scrutiny at all. Under the government …

Attributing Ai Authorship: Towards A System Of Icons For Legal And Ethical Disclosure, Joseph J. Avery, Patricia S. Abril, Alissa Del Riego Jan 2024

Attributing Ai Authorship: Towards A System Of Icons For Legal And Ethical Disclosure, Joseph J. Avery, Patricia S. Abril, Alissa Del Riego

Articles

Over the past year, the pervasive role of large language models (LLMs) and artificial intelligence (Al) in text generation has precipitated concerns about ethical usage, authorship, and transparent attribution. This has been true in legal practice, academia, and the corporate world, as well as in countless other arenas. In this Article, we identify the gap that has opened between those demanding proper disclosure (we should know when and to what extent Al is an author) and those struggling to respond to these demands. Part of the problem is that there is no system in place, no lingua franca, no set …

Israel, Palestine, And The Trolley Problem: On The Futility Of The Search For The Moral High Ground, Jack Russell Weinstein Jan 2024

Israel, Palestine, And The Trolley Problem: On The Futility Of The Search For The Moral High Ground, Jack Russell Weinstein

Digital Press Books

Arguments about Israel and Palestine are almost always accusatory and polemical. Rather than learning from one another, opponents jockey for the moral high ground trying to find that one attack they believe proves their side to be completely on the right, without compromise. This means Israel’s advocates dismiss Palestinian land claims without due consideration and Pro-Palestinian voices falsely accuse Israel of the most heinous modern crimes: colonialism, genocide, and apartheid. None of this is productive or healthy.

In Israel, Palestine, and the Trolley Problem: On the Futility of the Search for the Moral High Ground, philosopher Jack Russell Weinstein interweaves …

Trust Relationships: Tales From The Web, Magdoleen Ierlan Jan 2024

Trust Relationships: Tales From The Web, Magdoleen Ierlan

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Trust is an important component of any purchasing situation. In an online setting, trust becomes even more important as buyer and seller are not able to directly interact with one another. Compounding the situation is the fact that the consumer cannot directly experience the product under consideration. Organizations have attempted to address this shortcoming by allowing third parties to offer reviews of the product in question. This paper addresses how consumers process these product reviews.

By rooting this paper in trust and uncertainty reduction theory, a testable model was developed. The model was tested, and in general, more helpful reviews, …

Design And Development Of A Robotic Articulating Laparoscopic Instrument, Francisco Emmanuel T. Munsayac Jr Iii

Biomedical, Manufacturing and Robotics Engineering Dissertations

Laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgical technique, has revolutionized the field of surgery by replacing traditional open procedures with smaller incisions and reduced patient trauma. However, the current design of manual laparoscopic devices limits the range of motion for surgeons, restricting their maneuverability to only two degrees of freedom (DOF). This dissertation is a study aimed at addressing this limitation by designing and developing a robotic articulating laparoscopic instrument capable of providing 7-DOF movement.

The research aims to enhance surgical precision and dexterity by creating a tool that offers improved freedom of movement, allowing surgeons to navigate complex anatomical structures more …

Representation In Healthcare Matters: Perspectives On Inadequate Physician Diversity And Its Potential Impact On Minority Patients, Madison Andrews Jan 2024

Representation In Healthcare Matters: Perspectives On Inadequate Physician Diversity And Its Potential Impact On Minority Patients, Madison Andrews

Sociology Honors Papers

Disparities in access to healthcare among U.S. racial and ethnic groups, including access to quality services, have existed for centuries (Gibbons, 2005), leading to inequality in health outcomes as race/ethnicity intersects with gender and socioeconomic status (Wellons et al., 2009; Yan et al., 2023). Patients from minority communities face disadvantages due to the lack of diversity amongst physicians, including communication barriers, lack of trust, lesser rapport, and lower level of comfort with doctors who are non-representative of patients’ demographics (Ha & Longnecker, 2010; Lopez et al., 2023; Maldonado et al., 2014; Weech-Maldonado et al., 2003). It is important, then, to …

Identifying Public Perceptions Towards Precision Dairy Technology Use, Brad Kelly Jan 2024

Identifying Public Perceptions Towards Precision Dairy Technology Use, Brad Kelly

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

To remain sustainable, the dairy industry must demonstrate commitment to addressing concerns from the public, such as sustainability and animal welfare. Precision dairy technologies (PDT) are a potential solution to ameliorate this issue, but public perceptions towards PDT are currently underinvestigated. This thesis aims to describe public perceptions towards PDT. Specifically, the objectives are to 1) describe baseline perceptions of the U.S. public towards PDT, 2) determine the effects of framing information about human-animal bond, data transparency, and animal welfare on PDT perceptions, and 3) evaluate how demographic characteristics mediate these perceptions. An online survey was used to measure baseline …

Non-Uniformity Is The New Uniformity: Inconsistent Quarterly Fees And Why The Bankruptcy Administrator System Must Go, Cody Turner Jan 2024

Non-Uniformity Is The New Uniformity: Inconsistent Quarterly Fees And Why The Bankruptcy Administrator System Must Go, Cody Turner

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

The Bankruptcy Clause’s call for uniformity is one of the more mysterious and unstudied constitutional constraints on bankruptcy, yet it is an ever-present policy consideration. It is a flexible guidepost that functions as a minor constraint on bankruptcy law. However, courts have recently allowed this guidepost to bend too much. When the courts upheld a split bankruptcy administration system as constitutionally uniform, it set the stage for needless, avoidable litigation. The most recent examples of such needless litigation are the Supreme Court cases of Siegel v. Fitzgerald and Office of the United States Trustee v. John Q. Hammons Fall …

Intellectual Property And Business Sustainability: A Review Article On How Philippine Intellectual Property Laws Affect The Macro-Sustainability Of Businesses And The National Economy, John Evan C. Miguel

Asia-Pacific Intellectual Property Management and Innovation Book Series

This review article explains how the Intellectual Property Law (patents and copyrights) affects the sustainability of business and economy at the macro level. As a property right, patents and copyrights seek to protect intellectual creations, promote innovation, and encourage the transfer of technology in enterprises.

In the advent of globalization, products and services can now be traded between and among countries with decreased trade barriers. Thus, free flow of goods and services between countries also may increase the number of counterfeit goods that can adversely affect the macro-level sustainability of a business and the national economy of a country.

Ed.D. Capstone Reports

The four-day school week is a growing trend in the state of Missouri. As of 2023, 144 public schools are utilizing a four-day school week. Studies have shown a multitude of reasons school districts are making the change, such as financial savings, teacher recruitment, and teacher retention. Studies have also found mixed results regarding the impact of a four-day school week on student performance. Initially, student scores do not appear to be impacted. The Future Of Livestock Genetic Engineering In The United States: Going Against The Grain Or With The Herd?, Sam Harvey Jan 2024

The Future Of Livestock Genetic Engineering In The United States: Going Against The Grain Or With The Herd?, Sam Harvey

St. Thomas Law Review

For several years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have carried tension over which agency should regulate genetically modified livestock. Recently, this tension has boiled over with the release of many articles and statements from each organization as they battle over regulatory authority, most notably the USDA's claim that they are ready to take the bull by the horns and control the regulation of genetically engineered livestock. This note examines history and present-day practices to predict which agency will succeed in this battle of regulations, the USDA or the FDA.

Why Broker Novel Concepts Into Economic Sociology? Transcending The New Economic Sociology, Aaron Z. Pitluck Jan 2024

Why Broker Novel Concepts Into Economic Sociology? Transcending The New Economic Sociology, Aaron Z. Pitluck

Faculty Publications – Sociology and Anthropology

This Current Sociology Monograph draws together six articles that broker novel concepts into economic sociology. To orient this enterprise, this article examines the concepts of creativity and novelty in social theory and explains why it is challenging work to broker concepts across intellectual communities. To understand the existing boundaries across which one could broker, it next describes how the subfield of economic sociology has been shaped by the separation of economics and sociology as distinct fields, which ultimately led to a decline of sociologists studying the economy. Two counter-acting organizational forces that sought to institutionalize a subfield of economic sociology …

Time For Reform, Not Abolition: Balancing Justice And Morality Through Amendment Of The Federal Death Penalty, Madison Steinkamp Jan 2024

Time For Reform, Not Abolition: Balancing Justice And Morality Through Amendment Of The Federal Death Penalty, Madison Steinkamp

St. Thomas Law Review

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan addressed Congress, saying it was "scandalous and intolerable" that federal law did not provide for an enforceable death penalty.' Ten years prior, following a brief moratorium on its application, the death penalty had been ruled constitutional. While thirty-five states had already reinstated the death penalty at the state level and constitutionally executed ninety-three prisoners since 1976, Congress had not yet enacted the rational, objective standards necessary for applying the death penalty constitutionally. In the year following his speech to Congress, President Reagan successfully signed the federal death penalty into law through the Anti-Drug Abuse Act …

Lessons From Rwanda: Why The U.K. Should Promote Reconciliation Through Localized Strategies In Place Of Prosecutorial Amnesty, Jeremy J. Perillo

St. Thomas Law Review

The United Kingdom ("U.K.") has a long, rich, and complicated history, but is likely better known contemporarily through its icons, the late Queen Elizabeth II and Big Ben, for example. Beyond that surface, formulated through its time as an expansive empire, is the complexity and controversy that comes with being the U.K., a prominent global hegemonic power throughout generations. One such complexity that has spanned centuries is the demarcation between Northern Ireland ("N.I.") and the Republic of Ireland. In early September 2023, the U.K.'s House of Commons ("Parliament") passed the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act ("the Act"), intending …
