I taught ‘Curriculum Teaching and Learning’ as one of the master-level courses that enables course participants to broaden their understanding of curriculum models, teaching, learning and assessment approaches. The assignment required participants to choose a topic in their subject area, review relevant literature, and identify challenges faced by teachers and students during teaching and learning that topic.
In addition, course participants were asked to list misconceptions students possess regarding the relevant topics and explore possible solutions and recommendations to address the identified challenges and misconceptions. Thus, the course participants developed learning resources (lesson plans) using the 5E model (Engage, Explore, …

Good Lawyers, Good Sports?: The Professional Identity Of Sports Lawyers Representing Not-For-Profit Entities, Bruce A. Green

Faculty Scholarship

ABA accreditation standards require law schools to develop students’ professional identity, including by encouraging “an intentional exploration of” the legal profession’s “values [and] guiding principles.” This Essay invites legal academia as well as practitioners to explore issues of legal ethics, professionalism, and, especially, professional identity in the context of a new area of legal practice: sports lawyers’ representation of “NIL collectives,” which are not-for-profit entities that college boosters establish to enable college athletes to benefit financially from their name, image and likeness (“NIL”). The work of sports lawyers advising NIL collectives offers an interesting case study for considering how professional …

Education Doctorate Books

The book From Program to Practice: Purpose, Empowerment, and Persistence in Doctoral Education is a collection of graduate student writings from the 2022 summer Education Doctorate Residency at Winona State University.

"As practitioners in education and adjacent fields embark upon their journeys toward earning a doctorate, they soon realize the importance of this collection’s theme: the intersection of purpose, empowerment, and persistence (PEP). These concepts prove critical to a student’s success at all stages of the doctoral process, from program admission, to topic exploration, to graduation. The essays in this collection explore how students define, identify, and leverage “PEP” as …

2. Implementing the measurable METER tool which can provide …

Analyzing The Use Of Plain Language In Brief Summaries On Clinicaltrials.Gov, Megan J. Eddington Jan 2024

Analyzing The Use Of Plain Language In Brief Summaries On Clinicaltrials.Gov, Megan J. Eddington

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

ClinicalTrials.gov is a database designed to help clinical researchers make their research publicly available. The clinical trials registered on the database each include a brief summary, which is meant to be a short description that the public can easily understand. In September 2022, ClinicalTrials.gov published a "Plain Language Checklist for Lay Brief Summaries" on their website, which identifies plain language best practices intended to help investigators craft summaries that can be readily understood by the public. This thesis assesses the impact of the checklist on the language use in the brief summaries in the year following the checklist's publication. The …

Human Performance In Context: Exploring The Effect Of Social Support On Vigilance, Allison E. Garibaldi Jan 2024

Human Performance In Context: Exploring The Effect Of Social Support On Vigilance, Allison E. Garibaldi

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Over many decades, vigilance research has consistently found that performance on vigilance tasks decline over time (i.e., the vigilance decrement; Davies & Parasuraman, 1982), and that performing a vigilance task is both mentally demanding and stressful (Warm et al., 2008). Researchers have subsequently implemented a wide range of interventions to both understand and attempt to attenuate the vigilance decrement and its associated affective effects. Among these efforts, little attention has been devoted to understanding the effects of the social environment on vigilance. Nonetheless, a handful of studies have indeed suggested that the presence of others can affect performance, workload, and …

Aspen Forest Condition Assessment And Restoration Guidance, Paul C. Rogers Jan 2024

Aspen Forest Condition Assessment And Restoration Guidance, Paul C. Rogers

Aspen Bibliography

This preliminary report is the first installment of an ongoing aspen assessment at Bryce Canyon National Park (BCNP). Over a 1.5-year period beginning in 2021, I assembled available BCNP and conducted a preliminary field survey to gain a better understanding of the quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) resource within the Park. Findings suggest a long history of vegetation mapping with mixed results in terms of highlighting aspen presence a notable species of overall low coverage as well as aspen importance, at BCNP. In brief, though this species has limited presence, it is of high biodiversity conservation value. According to …

(Plant)Ing Traditional Roots: Exploring An Impact Of Environmental Shifts On Traditional Phytotherapy Practices In The Cusco Region Of Perú, Nicole Elizabeth Wilmot

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis investigates the potential outcomes of environmental shifts on plant-based medical practices in the Cusco region of Peru. Located in the Andes mountain range, at a high elevation, the environment varies immensely, specifically in the various types of native plants in the region. Historically, using plants as natural forms of medicine or healthcare has been deeply rooted in many indigenous communities, traditions, and cultures globally. Environmentally, there have been potential changes and shifts in temperature, water, and soil that affect the nutrition and health of plants to maintain their beneficial properties. Due to various factors, adaptations or shifts to …

Exploring The Association Between Epistemic Emotions And Engagement In Early Engineering Design Tasks, Michael Guglielmo, Christopher Costello, Yvette Kim Jan 2024

Exploring The Association Between Epistemic Emotions And Engagement In Early Engineering Design Tasks, Michael Guglielmo, Christopher Costello, Yvette Kim

Research Days Posters 2024

Research has shown that students who are interested in engineering design tasks early in their lives are more likely to become engineers. Importantly, kids tend to be more engaged with activities that elicit positive emotions (Hammond, 2014). Our purpose is to try fostering higher levels of engagement in engineering design tasks by observing how each step is associated with positive or negative epistemic emotions. We observed video recordings of six families engaged in different engineering tasks in their home environments. The videos were coded to categorize a range of different emotions throughout the activity. We hypothesize that activities involving physical …

Enhancing Intimate Partner Violence Assessments: Creating Equitable Tools For Spanish-Speaking Communities, Alberto D. Torres-Aragón, Quinn Hendershot, Matthew D. Johnson Jan 2024

Enhancing Intimate Partner Violence Assessments: Creating Equitable Tools For Spanish-Speaking Communities, Alberto D. Torres-Aragón, Quinn Hendershot, Matthew D. Johnson

Research Days Posters 2024

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is abuse or aggression within a romantic relationship. To prevent severe consequences, assessment is needed to understand IPV in its entirety prior to putting an intervention into place. English speakers in the United States have numerous instruments available, but there is a much more limited selection for Spanish speakers (Hendershot et al. under review). Herein, this research aims to discuss the best practices and importance for assessment in IPV while highlighting our ongoing efforts in IPV assessment through creating a measure. This initiative is crucial as it broadens the scope of IPV research and intervention strategies, …

Signifying Identity With Makeup In The Late Roman Empire, Madison Cardiel Jan 2024

Signifying Identity With Makeup In The Late Roman Empire, Madison Cardiel

Research Days Posters 2024

The research revolves around the idea of “gender performativity,” in which a person’s gender identity is taught by society and reinforced by culturally-acceptable behaviors. I explore this theory through the lens of the late Roman Empire (between the third and sixth centuries, C.E.) and the cosmetic practices that women employed during that time. My findings include the fact that makeup was an integral part of the construction of Roman womanhood, and that social class was inextricably linked to beauty. For example, the image of an intellectual, wealthy woman became the image of beauty, and so cosmetic practices centered around this …

Exploring The Significance Of Old Books: A Case Study Of, Hana Hassan

Research Days Posters 2024

Why do books matter? Beyond their contents, what stories can they tell? In 1825, a fire broke out in Edinburgh, destroying almost every copy of The Knightly Tales. Instead of giving up, the printer spent great time and money painstakingly restoring the few copies so they could be sold and read. This study explores the significance of old books, using The Knightly Tales as a case study. I analyze the book’s journey from creation, to its burning and restoration, to its current state. Utilizing interviews with preservation experts, this project investigates how to restore damaged books. This research underscores the …

9 Days In Deutschland, Qinza Malik Khan

Research Days Posters 2024

9 Days in Deutschland is a documentary style memoir based on my trip to Germany where I drifted my way through 9 different cities, towns and villages. During this trip I took photos with no goal in mind and ended up with over 5,000 digital photos and 12 rolls of film. What started as a photo book quickly matured into a memoir where the writing became as important as the visuals, creating a symbiotic structure. Through this format I reflected on history, war, photography, film, sexual violence against women during war, the Holocaust, propaganda, truth, trauma, time, loss, loneliness, and …

Women’S Fashion In England 1800-1834 And Its Effects On The Socio-Economic Status Of The Working Class, Ruby Davis Jan 2024

Women’S Fashion In England 1800-1834 And Its Effects On The Socio-Economic Status Of The Working Class, Ruby Davis

Research Days Posters 2024

The first quarter of the nineteenth century saw the evolution of how women in England thought of fashion and the effect it had on their social and economic status. Poor and working-class women were passed over for higher-paying opportunities due to their clothes' misalignment with the major fashion trends of the day. The study of the development of social conditions and the change in clothing and designs contributes to an understanding of why those in the lower class were denied mobility in their status.

Applying Samhsa Trauma-Informed Principles To A New Graduate Nurse Residency Program For Retention, Charman Harper Jan 2024

Applying Samhsa Trauma-Informed Principles To A New Graduate Nurse Residency Program For Retention, Charman Harper

Nursing

The inability to retain new graduate nurses contributes to the nursing shortage. With an estimated cost of over $60,000 to train each new graduate nurse, the inability to retain new nurses financially burdens the healthcare industry (McClain et al., 2022). Current studies show that many new graduate nurses leave their jobs after one year (McClain et al., 2022). Without needed change, it will produce stress, anxiety, poor work performance, and decreased job satisfaction, impacting retention rates (McClain et al., 2022). In addition to the traditional new graduate residency program, incorporating the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Trauma-informed …

Missouri Law Review

Honk! Honk! Crash! You have just been injured in a car accident. The other driver is completely at-fault, but luckily, she was insured. You timely submit your valid claims to her well-known insurance agency, but the agency denies the claim for no apparent reason. While confused and frustrated, you take comfort in the fact that society created insurance companies to address your exact injuries and that the legal system provides remedies for this very situation. Your attorney reassures you that the other driver and her insurance agency will be held accountable, and justice will be served.
