This article advocates integrating disciplinary literacy into secondary Social Studies instruction, arguing that the content area is critical to strengthening adolescent reading skills, particularly in alignment with the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE). Drawing from the "Bridging Literacy Gaps" presentation, the paper asserts that literacy is not merely a prerequisite for studying history but the very methodology by which students learn to read, write, and think like historians.

The article details three high-leverage strategies for Social Studies educators:

  1. Disciplinary Literacy and Multimodal Text Integration: Teaching students how experts analyze primary and secondary sources, and integrating diverse media (e.g., political cartoons, …

Fostering Student Inquiry With Perspective Taking And Music: The Geography Detective Activity, William Gary G. Cole May 2026

Fostering Student Inquiry With Perspective Taking And Music: The Geography Detective Activity, William Gary G. Cole

Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

This article introduces the Geography Detective activity, an inquiry-based instructional strategy that integrates perspective taking and music to foster student engagement and disciplinary thinking in a ninth-grade World Geography classroom. Centered on the song “Cecilia” by The Mulligan Brothers, the activity invites students to analyze lyrics as historical evidence, investigate geographical and historical contexts, and construct evidence-based interpretations of time, place, and events embedded within the narrative. Through guided and open-ended inquiry, students adopt the role of “history detectives,” grappling with ambiguity, evaluating sources, and defending plausible conclusions rather than seeking predetermined answers. Grounded in research on inquiry-based learning, perspective …

Type Iv Black Hole Observatory — Structural Analysis Of 2 Enoch As A Candidate Witness Architecture, Daniel Austin Harbison

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure documents a structural correspondence between the ten-heaven cosmology
described in 2 Enoch (the Slavonic apocalypse, long recension) and the architecture that would
be produced by a deeply nested observatory or habitat system around a supermassive black
hole. The claim is structural, not physical. The text is not asserted to encode measured
astrophysics. It is asserted that the specific pattern of features in the text — exhaustive counts
of beings and objects, durations of cycles, structural relations and ordering, combined with the
conspicuous absence of absolute distances or sizes — is the data pattern that would be
produced by …

Reflective teaching as a community of practice can offer critical support in honing both teacher-librarian identity and classroom management skills.  In this session, we will outline how university librarians and MLIS students collaborated to develop a community of practice around reflective teaching. Attendees will hear firsthand from MLIS students about how participating in this community of practice shaped their development and confidence as emerging instructors. Our practice included pre- and post-semester reflections, structured goal setting, regular reflection on one-shot instruction, and periodic cohort meetings to share how reflection shapes future practice. We aimed to create a non-hierarchical approach to reflection …
