Hearing Their Stories: Tailoring Human Resources Strategies For Onboarding, Job Satisfaction, And Retention Of Veterans With Disabilities In The Civilian Workforce, Brian Newsom

Dissertations

Tailored HR strategies play an important role for veterans with disabilities (VWD) as they transition from the military to civilian employment by enhancing their job satisfaction and improving their retention. The literature review helped identify the challenges VWD face during their transition, such as health or mental health problems, cultural adjustment difficulties, and onboarding that is not inclusive. The primary research objective of the study was to determine effective HR strategies to improve the onboarding process for VWD, increase their job satisfaction, and grow their retention rates. Qualitative methods enabled the capturing of data from in-depth interviews with 31 former …

Towards An Iot-Enabled Digital Earth For Sdgs: The Data Quality Challenge, Msb Syed, Paula Kelly, Paul Stacey, Damon Berry

Articles

Digital Earth (DE), a technology offering real-time visualisation of Earth's processes, has shown promising results in aiding decision-making for a sustainable world, raising awareness about individual impacts on our planet, and supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) agenda. However, both DE and SDGs face a common obstacle: Data Quality (DQ). This review investigates the challenge of DQ in the context of DE for SDGs and explores how IoT can address this challenge and extend the reach of DE to support SDGs. Furthermore, the study discusses three core aspects; first, the potential of IoT as a data source …

The Development Of Central American Communities In Western Europe, Jonathan S. Valenzuela Mejia Oct 2024

The Development Of Central American Communities In Western Europe, Jonathan S. Valenzuela Mejia

Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union

Central Americans in the past 50 years have been migrating in larger and larger numbers. This is mostly caused by civil wars, economic turmoil, and political instability. The number of migrants has only increased over time and the United States has been the main destination for Central Americans and houses the largest diaspora from the region. However, in recent years, Central Americans have begun to migrate in larger numbers to Europe due to increased difficulties in migrating to the United States, and because of visa-free access to most European countries and a more streamlined asylum process. Most of these migrants …

Cloaking The Front National: Marine Le Pen, Femininity, And The Evolution Of A ‘New’ European Far-Right, Taryn M. Blecher Oct 2024

Cloaking The Front National: Marine Le Pen, Femininity, And The Evolution Of A ‘New’ European Far-Right, Taryn M. Blecher

Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union

From the Front National to the Rassemblement National, Marine Le Pen has done what was once inconceivable in bringing France’s far-right into mainstream politics. The daughter of Le Diable (the devil), Marine Le Pen has ushered in a ‘new’ European rightwing populism—far from the Männerparteien of the past—with her femonationalism and media politics. This paper aims to increase our understanding of Marine Le Pen’s iteration of French nationalism and illusions of femininity. Through a series of illustrative case studies and supporting research, I reveal how Le Pen manipulates her sexuality and womanhood in an attempt to soften the crude image …

The Price Of Prevention: Spain And Italy's Approach To National Prep, Jon Burkart

Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union

While recent advancements in antiretroviral therapy (ART) continue to improve the outlook for people living with HIV (PLHIV), new infections remain a concern for health authorities around the world. A clinically proven intervention holds the potential to dramatically reduce new infections: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a once-daily pill for high-risk populations, including men who have sex with men (MSM), that substantially reduces HIV infection risk. However—much like rates of new infection—public provision of PrEP varies considerably among OECD countries. This case study thus seeks to answer the question: What might explain the disparate timeline of adopting public reimbursement for PrEP …

Marine mammals are integral to global biodiversity and marine health through their roles in coastal, benthic, and pelagic ecosystems. Marine mammals face escalating threats from climate change, pollution, and human activities, which perturb their oceanic environment. The diverse biology and extreme adaptations evolved by marine mammals make them important study subjects for understanding anthropogenic pressures on marine ecosystems. However, ethical and logistical constraints restrict the tractability of experimental research with live marine mammals. Additionally, studies on the effects of changing ocean environments are further complicated by intricate gene-environment interactions across populations and species. These obstacles can be overcome with a …

Theses and Dissertations

The Critical Literacy (CritLit) project promotes using critical texts to engage readers in examining their lived experiences and understanding of social justice issues. This study used a qualitative participatory approach with a narrative design to research the students’ engagement in a book club using critical texts. Participants were fourth- and fifth-grade African American students who participated in a 4-week project at a weekend Islamic school in Philadelphia. I organized my study into four sessions. Three book club sessions were audio-recorded and observed. Plastome Analysis Of Cultivated Apricots: Genome Structure, Nucleotide Diversity, And Phylogeny, Lungelo Khanyile, Kahraman Gürcan Oct 2024

Plastome Analysis Of Cultivated Apricots: Genome Structure, Nucleotide Diversity, And Phylogeny, Lungelo Khanyile, Kahraman Gürcan

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The genetic diversity and evolution of plastomes in P. armeniaca L. (common/cultivated apricot) have been poorly studied.Complete plastomes of 20 accessions and 10 F1 hybrids, identified as P. armeniaca L., were de novo assembled filtering from total DNAnt reads. These plastomes were subsequently analyzed with the Prunus genus accessions retrieved from the GenBank. The plastomesexhibited conservation of genomic structure, gene organization and order, with lengths ranging from 158,057 nt to 158,089 nt,displaying a narrow size variation. Except for “Zard” and its hybrids, the plastomes of apricot genotypes from different regions showedonly three haplotypes, indicating narrow genetic diversity in cultivated P. …

Lonicera caerulea, commonly known as honeysuckle, is widespread in the Eurasian continent. Its berries are rich in bioactive compounds. However, limited studies have explored the metabolome composition of the berries of varieties and wild accessions in different subspecies of L. caerulea. Here we studied the metabolomic compositions of four varieties of L. caerulea ssp. caerulea and one variety and five wild accessions of L. caerulea ssp. kamtschatica (Sevast.) Gladkova, by using HPLC-ESI-MS and ESI-MS/MS analyses. We report the identification of 151 compounds in the two L. caerulea subspecies. In total, 88 and 84 compounds were detected in L. caerulea and …

A Feasibility Study Of A Music Enrichment Program On Relative Reinforcing Value Of Food And Home Environmental Enrichment Among Families Of Low Socioeconomic Status., Kai Ling Kong, Amy R. Smith, Brenda Salley, Deanna Hanson-Abromeit, Hideko Engel, Catherine Serwatka

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that low socioeconomic status (SES) home environments may play a role by promoting excess energy intake through a lack of access to non-food reinforcers. Because of the deleterious effects of SES-related disparities on child health and development, feasible and culturally acceptable interventions are urgently needed. Community-based music enrichment programs may be an ideal intervention strategy.

METHODS: In collaboration with a local non-profit organization and music studio, we conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial to assess the effects of a music enrichment program versus a play date control in a group of 9-24-month-old healthy infants (N = …

Adverse Childhood Experiences And Intimate Partner Violence: Exploring Implications For Young Adults’ Romantic Outlook, Tyler B. Jamison, Hans Saint-Eloi Cadely

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

In the present study, we used data from a community sample of 442 American young adults ages 18 to 35 to explore the associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), intimate partner violence (IPV), and young adults’ romantic outlook (i.e., general attitude toward romantic involvement), which includes perceived average relationship quality, desire for relationships, and dismissal of relationships. Guided by a life course perspective, we examined whether ACEs and IPV work together to predict romantic outlook among young adults. We also explored whether education level moderated the effects of ACEs and IPV on romantic outlook during young adulthood. Our findings suggest …

Distributed Software Build Assurance For Software Supply Chain Integrity, Ken Lew, Arijet Sarker, Simeon Wuthier, Jinoh Kim Oct 2024

Distributed Software Build Assurance For Software Supply Chain Integrity, Ken Lew, Arijet Sarker, Simeon Wuthier, Jinoh Kim

Faculty Publications

Computing and networking are increasingly implemented in software. We design and build a software build assurance scheme detecting if there have been injections or modifications in the various steps in the software supply chain, including the source code, compiling, and distribution. Building on the reproducible build and software bill of materials (SBOM), our work is distinguished from previous research in assuring multiple software artifacts across the software supply chain. Reproducible build, in particular, enables our scheme, as our scheme requires the software materials/artifacts to be consistent across machines with the same operating system/specifications. Furthermore, we use blockchain to deliver the …
