In the past year, three governmental ministries – the Ministry of Health, Ministry of National Development, and Ministry of Transport – have jointly led Age Well SG, a national programme that seeks to support older Singaporeans in ageing well in their homes and their communities. This programme reflects the government’s priority in enabling ageing-in-place, a trend that has been increasingly welcomed by older Singaporeans. Current policies that seek to enable ageing-in-place are centred on three forms of enhancements in the environments in which older Singaporeans live, such as the implementation of Active Ageing Centres, strengthening of support for care needs, …

An increase in the consumer demand and the availability of gluten-free products has led to several brewers investigating brewing with grains other than barley. The primary grain of choice has been sorghum. These new gluten-free beers have a unique flavor and aroma, which previous research has shown is the result of differences in concentration for key chemical compounds, including ethyl butyrate, butyl acetate, isoamyl acetate, ethyl caproate, hexyl acetate, 1-octanol, nonanal, ethyl octanoate, and ethyl decanoate. This study focused looked at the influence different strains of yeast had on the concentration of these key compounds. Beer was brewed using either …

Navigating Non-Orthogonality: Exploring Latent Mean Differences In Unbalanced Conditions, Jay B. Jeffries
Navigating Non-Orthogonality: Exploring Latent Mean Differences In Unbalanced Conditions, Jay B. Jeffries
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Researchers understand that conducting numerous pairwise comparisons between group means increases the Type I error rate, prompting the use of planned contrasts like orthogonal contrast sets. Implicit to orthogonal contrast sets is the principal assumption that groups are balanced in size. Further, when dealing with complex variables like latent constructs, specialized modeling is necessary. Understanding how violations of the assumptions of an orthogonal contrast set and the latent variable model approach can help identify variation in the accuracy of group mean difference. However, hindrances to the accuracy of latent mean orthogonal comparisons when this assumption is untenable remains unsettled. This …

Study Of Graduate Student Instructors’ Attempts To Incorporate And Reflect On Using Discourse Practices In Undergraduate Mathematics Courses, Katie Johnson Sprague
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Within the last decade, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has made a call to action, asking educators to engage in effective teaching of mathematics which includes having classrooms rich in mathematical discourse (NCTM, 2014). In this nine-week dissertation study, three mathematics graduate student instructors (GSIs) teaching undergraduate students at a large midwestern university enacted discourse practices to promote mathematical discussions as part of a participatory action research study. The participants were video tapped teaching six times and attended four whole group meetings. The whole group meetings were used to discuss the practices, planning, and enactment of the …

'More Is Caught Than Taught:' Parental Cultural And Racial Socialization Beliefs And Practices In The Midwest United States, Sarah Barker Ladd
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Parents are critical socialization agents for their children, especially in middle childhood. It is through parent-child interactions that beliefs, values, and attitudes can be particularly influential for a child’s identity and social development. In particular, understanding how parents socialize their children has important implications for their own child’s racial identity development and critical consciousness – and later civic engagement and social behaviors. The current study sought to investigate ethnic-racial socialization (ERS) and critical consciousness of parents with children in middle childhood who live in the Midwestern United States. Based on interviews and quantitative survey data from 28 parents, results revealed …

Leading The Way: An Exploration Of Leadership Behaviors In Academic Advising, Amanda Bergeron-Bauer
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Academic advisors in higher education serve as more than a resource for planning classes. These student affairs professionals also assist with success plans, identifying career paths, connecting students with relevant campus resources, and working through academic and personal concerns. Over time, the field of academic advising has transitioned from a prescriptive form of advising that consisted primarily of transactional interactions to a hybrid approach that incorporates developmental advising or helping to develop the whole student. As institutions emphasize the importance of developmental advising on their campuses, it is necessary for academic advisors to expand their skill sets to better meet …

A Comparative Study Of Weavings Of Two Disparate Cultures: Finding The Similarities In Handcrafts, Monica Lowe
A Comparative Study Of Weavings Of Two Disparate Cultures: Finding The Similarities In Handcrafts, Monica Lowe
Theses
This thesis is a study of the similarities between the traditional weavings of two indigenous cultures who appear to be culturally unrelated, the West African Ewe and the Peruvian Quechua located in the Cusco Province. Its purview includes the purpose it serves, who does the craft, and meanings woven into the textiles. The focus of this thesis is based on a theory that across human cultures, iconographies and archetypes are demonstratively the same, with similar collective, unconscious meanings. The overall theory is that handcrafts are an important consideration when demonstrating a reflection of human cultural similarities in beliefs, community, and …

New Approximations For Monotone Submodular Maximization With Knapsack Constraint, Hongmin W. Du, Xiang Li, Guanghua Wang
Computer Science and Engineering
Given a monotone submodular set function with a knapsack constraint, its maximization problem has two types of approximation algorithms with running time 0(n2) and 0(n5), respectively. With running time 0(n5), the best performance ratio is 1-1/e. With running time 0(n2), the well-known performance ratio is (1-1/e)/2 and an improved one is claimed to be (1-1/e2)/2 recently. In this paper, we design an algorithm with running 0(n2) and performance ratio 1-1/e2/3, and an algorithm with running time 0(n3) and performance ratio 1/2.

An Examination Of Duplicates In The Fast Fashion Industry: Synthesizing Definitions And Comparing Original Designs To Duplicate Examples, Raquel Maranhao Braulino
An Examination Of Duplicates In The Fast Fashion Industry: Synthesizing Definitions And Comparing Original Designs To Duplicate Examples, Raquel Maranhao Braulino
University Honors Program Senior Projects
The business of fast fashion has expanded tremendously since the nineties (Ozdamar-Ertekin, 2016). This expansion is caused by the market’s demand for low-cost trendy items (Jin et al., 2012), the overproduction of merchandising (Joy et al., 2012), online shopping (Rosskamp, 2018), technology-facilitated designs (Peroni, & Vitali, 2017), and faster delivery processes (Moon et al., 2017). The effects caused by the expansion of the fast fashion industry can be detrimental to consumers' self-concept (Legere, & Kang, 2020), result in the amplification of mass production (Moretta et al., 2013) and can have negative consequences to the environment (Peters et al., 2021). In …

Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This study addresses the underrepresentation of rural communities in research by examining facilitators and barriers in two rural Mississippi counties, emphasizing the need for context-specific exploration. Utilizing focus group interviews with Community Advisory Board members from the RURAL Study, the research explores relationships, trust, and communication as key themes influencing participation. Strong community bonds are both a facilitator and barrier, emphasizing the importance of preserving close-knit ties. Trust, built through training and community recognition, is crucial, while mistrust rooted in historical concerns poses a significant barrier. Communication transparency and strategic engagement are fundamental, with physical spaces prioritized for recruitment. The …

Perceptions Of Texas Small-Scale Producers On Success, Challenges, And The Future Of Agriculture, Katie Tritsch, Ken Mix, Michelle L. Edwards, Manuel Piña Jr.
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The roles and survival of small farms are much debated, and their operators are not well understood. This exploratory study examines the perceptions of Texas small producers using a sample of mostly first- generation farmers who consider agriculture their primary occupation and who use sustainable practices. Semistructured interviews revealed six prominent themes related to small-farmers’ success, challenges, and visions for the future. Of these, personal fulfillment, importance of community, and adaptability and versatility were the prominent themes regarding success. In terms of challenges, small producers felt they were at a disadvantage compared to larger farms. Participants expressed a desire for …
