Privately owned lands offer substantial land area that have the potential to contribute greatly to wildlife conservation. However, it is dubious for private landowners to engage in such programs that have not readily accepted their input. Given the future directions of wildlife conservation and needing to heavily integrate private lands into habitat objectives to meet wildlife population standards, it will be of growing importance to consider the needs and wants of private landowners to meet production goals and simultaneously wildlife habitat goals (and not the other way around). We recognize the important methodological research that has built foundations for current …

Small Satellite Conference
Launched on Artemis I, BioSentinel carries a biology experiment into deep space for the first time in 50 years. A 6U CubeSat form factor was utilized for the spacecraft, which included technologies newly developed or adapted for operations beyond Earth orbit. The spacecraft carries onboard budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, as an analog to human cells to test the biological response to deep space radiation. This was the maiden deep-space voyage for many of the subsystems, and the first time to evaluate their performance in flight operation.
Flying a CubeSat beyond LEO comes with unique challenges with respect to trajectory …

Insecta Mundi
Spondias purpurea L. (Anacardiaceae), native to the Neotropical region, is cultivated in the Philippines for the edible fruits and the tree is economically significant. The adventive leaf beetle, Podontia quatuordecimpunctata (L.) (Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae: Alticini), has become a major defoliating pest of the tree in the country. The Philippines government has initiated study of the pest, now locally called the sineguelas leaf beetle (SLB). This paper reports the results of a one-year field study on the biology of SLB on S. purpurea (red sineguelas), in Batangas City, Philippines. The SLB eggs hatch in 5–7 days. The larval period is 14–16 …

Examining The Different Soil Horizons Of White Oak Mountain, Tn And Their Effect On The Soil Microbial Community, Ji Won Moon, Timothy D. Trott
Research in Biology
Soil microorganisms participate in the diverse interaction within virtually all ecosystems, consequently affecting the associated human and animal population. Identifying how edaphic variables alter the functional and taxonomic diversity of the soil microbial community requires an examination of total microbial soil diversity and abundance. This research study examined the effect of soil depth and horizon on the soil microbial community composition of White Oak Mountain. The soil microbial community was characterized by 16S/18S/ITS rDNA amplicon sequencing of the DNA extract of six samples from the three major soil types identified: HcE, MoE, and uMvC. OTU clustering analysis and both alpha …
Site-Specific Glyco-Engineering Of Recombinant Thrombomodulin, Joseph M. Keil
Site-Specific Glyco-Engineering Of Recombinant Thrombomodulin, Joseph M. Keil
ETD Archive
Thrombomodulin (TM), a membrane glycoprotein predominately expressed on endothelium, plays essential roles in regulating local hemostatic balance. Particularly, TM modulates the activity of thrombin from a procoagulant to an anticoagulant protease. When bound to TM, thrombin activates plasma protein C, which selectively inactivates coagulation factors Va and VIIIa. At the same time, TM-bound thrombin is unable to cleave fibrinogen or to activate platelets diminishing its procoagulant activity. recombinant TM456 is a promising anticoagulant candidate, but it has a very short half-life. TM is a proteoglycan and its O-linked glycosaminoglycan (GAG), chondroitin sulfate (CS), on the D3 domain contributes to TM’s …

Toxicity Of Different Insecticides To Sitophilus Oryzae, Tribolium Castaeneum And Tribolium Confusum Infesting Corn, Amina Twaibu
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Corn is an important cereal crop cultivated across various countries, including the United States. Corn serves multiple purposes such as human and livestock food and raw material for industrial processes. Despite being an important crop, corn production faces challenges due to factors such as weather fluctuations and the presence of insect pests and diseases, both in the field and during storage. Among these challenges, insect infestation poses a major threat, as the insect damage not only reduces the quantity and quality of the grain but also renders it unfit for human and animal consumption, leading to a decrease in market …
Kdm5b As A Potential Epigenetic Regulator Of Cardiomyocyte Regeneration And Cell Cycle Activation., Dana Hammouri
Kdm5b As A Potential Epigenetic Regulator Of Cardiomyocyte Regeneration And Cell Cycle Activation., Dana Hammouri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The limited regenerative capacity of adult cardiomyocytes (CMs) is manifested in prevalent morbidity and mortality associated with ischemic heart disease. We previously demonstrated that a combination of four cell cycle factors (4F) promotes efficient cell division in differentiated CMs. The temporal transcriptional reprogramming in the 4F-transduced CMs indicates that epigenetic modifications mediate the cell cycle progression. Through small molecule screening, we evaluated the epigenetic impact on CM’s response in the 4F-transduced CMs. We identified the histone demethylase 5B (KDM5B), which through in vitro and ex vivo genetic knockdown and overexpression studies, exhibited a modulative effect on CM’s cell cycle plasticity …
Contributions To Robust Statistical Learning And Its Applications In Biological Spectral Imaging, Ruogu Wang
Contributions To Robust Statistical Learning And Its Applications In Biological Spectral Imaging, Ruogu Wang
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis investigates robust statistical learning and its applications in biological spectral imaging. The first part of this thesis addresses the challenges raised in the statistical learning of robust expectile regression. Expectiles can be obtained through empirical risk minimization (\acrshort{erm}), which minimizes the sum of asymmetrically weighted squared deviations. However, this \acrshort{erm} scheme lacks robustness to abnormal observations and flexibility. To overcome these limitations, we adopt the empirical gain maximization (\acrshort{egm}) scheme that learns expectiles using an asymmetric Gaussian \acrshort{egm} approach. The corresponding \acrshort{erm} can be formulated with a robust expectile loss, which is bounded and nonconvex. Through a learning …
Use Of Biorational Products For Botrytis Management In Floriculture Crops, Josselyn Calidonio
Use Of Biorational Products For Botrytis Management In Floriculture Crops, Josselyn Calidonio
All Theses
Botrytis cinerea is an important pathogen that has a significant economic impact on the floriculture industry from propagation to the postharvest environment. Chemical fungicide applications have been one of the main approaches that growers use for botrytis blight management; however, studies have shown that the indiscriminative use of these chemicals leads to fungicide resistance (Brent and Hollomon, 1998; Fillinger and Elad 2016). This thesis explores the potential use of biorational products for botrytis blight management. Biorationals are defined as compounds that have low or no direct mammalian toxicity and few effects on the environment (Paulitz and Belanger 2001). A review …

Biomimetic Aerosol Exposure System For In Vitro Human Airway Exposure Studies, Samantha Emma Sarles
Biomimetic Aerosol Exposure System For In Vitro Human Airway Exposure Studies, Samantha Emma Sarles
Theses
Tobacco use remains the number one cause of preventable death in the United States, disproportionately affecting residents of rural areas, people who are financially disadvantaged, and adults who identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual. The impact that electronic cigarettes will have on public health is not yet fully understood. Combinations of electronic cigarette products, human airway geometries, and user behaviors create barriers to understanding products’ interaction with the human airway and their health effects. Current in vitro emissions systems, also called smoking robots, lack biomimicry, use unrealistic flow conditions, produce unrealistic aerosol dose, and provide inaccurate bio-mechanical cues to cell …

Does warmth from hydrothermal springs play a vital role in the biology and ecology of abyssal animals? Deep off central California, thousands of octopus (Muusoctopus robustus) migrate through cold dark waters to hydrothermal springs near an extinct volcano to mate, nest, and die, forming the largest known aggregation of octopus on Earth. Warmth from the springs plays a key role by raising metabolic rates, speeding embryonic development, and presumably increasing reproductive success; we show that brood times for females are ∼1.8 years, far faster than expected for abyssal octopods. Using a high-resolution subsea mapping system, we created landscapescale maps and …

Electron-Transfer Mediated Photo-Switching In Nanoparticles, Liaoran Cao
All Dissertations
Previous publications from our lab demonstrated viable approaches to design a photo-switching nanoparticle with arguably superior brightness and photostability resulting in an improved resolution in localization-based microscopy, as compared to other photo-switching dyes or particles. As a follow-up, this dissertation is focused on two major tasks: first, developing nanoparticles with better photo-switching properties for super-resolution imaging; second, trying to achieve a better physical picture of the mechanisms involved in photo-switching, including polaron dynamics, charge transfer, and energy transfer. A new class of photo-switchable nanoparticles was developed by blending conjugated polymer semiconductor with fullerene-based electron acceptors, and further blending with polystyrene …

Previous evidence indicates that HPV integration status may be associated with cervical cancer development and progression. However, host genetic variation within genes that may play important roles in the viral integration process is understudied. The aim of this study was to examine the association between HPV16 and HPV18 viral integration status and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ) DNA repair pathway genes on cervical dysplasia. Women enrolled in two large trials of optical technologies for cervical cancer detection and positive for HPV16 or HPV18 were selected for HPV integration analysis and genotyping. Associations between SNPs and cytology (normal, …

Abstract
Latour removes the boundaries between natural sciences and humanities. Science for Latour is cultural practise, at the same time in every cultural practice, nature and objects are also actively involved. In that sense, Latour's constructivism encourages the emergence of non-human actors as drivers of the societal changes. By that, he provoked sociology to expand its subject matter. The Social in sociology must be seen as an association involving human and non-human actors.
Key words: Constructivism, Expansion of agency, actant, actor network theory.

Rasbora philippina is an endemic species in Mindanao Island, Philippines. Its reproductive biology remains unstudied despite its economic importance to the local inhabitants of the lake, the Subanen tribe. Due to its marketability, Rasbora faces local threats. Thus, the formulation of fishery management and conservation recommendations is highly recommended. A research-made survey was used to interview fishermen in the lake, and fish samples were collected using a seine net with a catch per unit effort of three or four from March to May 2019. Water samples were collected using a Niskin water sampler at 1 m and 15 m depths …

Utah is a superb place for beginning bee enthusiasts. Over 1,000 species of native bees exist in Utah (Cane, 2015). Southern Utah alone has approximately the same number of bee species as the entire eastern U.S. coast. There are many reasons for appreciating bees and encouraging their presence in the landscape. Specifically, bees are key to a sustainable environment as they are essential pollinators of food and fiber crops. Bees can also be appreciated for their striking diversity in color and size. This fact sheet highlights the different bee species that you may see in Utah.

Significant challenges remain in the computational processing of data from liquid chomratography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based metabolomic experiments into metabolite features. In this study, we examine the issues of provenance and reproducibility using the current software tools. Inconsistency among the tools examined is attributed to the deficiencies of mass alignment and controls of feature quality. To address these issues, we develop the open-source software tool asari for LC-MS metabolomics data processing. Asari is designed with a set of specific algorithmic framework and data structures, and all steps are explicitly trackable. Asari compares favorably to other tools in feature detection and quantification. It …

An epidemic of obesity has affected large portions of the world, increasing the risk of developing many different age-associated diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. In contrast with the prevailing notion that "a calorie is just a calorie," there are clear differences, within and between individuals, in the metabolic response to different macronutrient sources. Recent findings challenge this oversimplification; calories from different macronutrient sources or consumed at different times of day have metabolic effects beyond their value as fuel. Here, we summarize discussions conducted at a recent NIH workshop that brought together experts in calorie restriction, macronutrient composition, and …

The Centers for disease control and Prevention (CDC) published an article describing the disease that would later become known as HIV/AIDS in 1981. There were no treatments for this new disease, and by the time patients began exhibiting detectable symptoms, it would be too late to provide any meaningful treatments. Through the efforts made by the scientific community and social activism, new classes of drugs appeared for the treatment of this disease. These drugs are highly effective when combined with other therapeutic agents that suppress the proliferation of the virus. These combined therapies have helped alleviate the previously insurmountable risks …
The Art Of A Slugslayer: An Exploration Of The Process Of Extracting Radulae From Lehmannia Valentiana For The Purpose Of Viewing In The Scanning Electron Microscope, Elizabeth Gannon
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
A radula is an anatomical structure found exclusively in mollusks that acts as both tongue and teeth in feeding. Its structure has been studied for more than a century, yet published methods for identifying, dissecting, and cleaning radulae for microscopy are almost unintelligible to anyone not already familiar with molluscan anatomy. The purpose of this project was to identify the best method of garden slug radula isolation and present it in a manner that anyone could understand and successfully use.
After identifying the location of the radula in the slug, the easiest means of removal proved to be simply regurgitating …

Plant-associated bacteria are an unexplored group of microorganisms that has enormous potential. These bacteria are the source of finding new antimicrobial substances. The present study aimed to isolate and characterize the epiphytes and endophytes from Osmium basilicum and Trigonella foenum graecum plants and to determine their antimicrobial potential against pathogenic bacteria from Nishtar Hospital Multan, Pakistan. The sum of 18 stems and roots along leaf specimens were assembled as of the plant's Osmium basilicum plus Trigonella foenum graecum as of the distinct locales of the Multan city. Overall 73 bacterial strains were isolated and their colony morphology, gram staining, spore …

Biological nitrogen fixation, the conversion of N2 gas into a bioavailable form, is vital to sustaining marine primary production. Studies have shifted beyond traditionally studied tropical diazotrophs. Candidatus Atelocyanobacterium thalassa (or UCYN-A) has emerged as a focal point due to its streamlined metabolism, intimate partnership with a haptophyte host, and broad distribution. Here, we explore the environmental parameters that govern UCYN-A’s presence at the San Pedro Ocean Time-series (SPOT), its host specificity, and statistically significant interactions with non-host eukaryotes from 2008-2018. 16S and 18S rRNA gene sequences were amplified by “universal primers” from monthly samples and resolved into Amplicon …

Theses and Dissertations
Microfluidics can take laboratory processes and miniaturize them, which led to the term lab-on-a-chip. Microfluidic devices are fabricated with a variety of materials and methods, each offering distinct advantages for bioanalysis. This dissertation describes two methods to create these devices, with the use of four different materials to achieve different assay needs. In the first application in this dissertation, hot-embossed cyclic olefin copolymer was used to create microdevices to electrophoretically separate seven preterm birth biomarkers. One biomarker, thrombin-antithrombin III, cannot be purchased commercially so I developed methods for its assembly in the lab. Dot blots and mass spectrometry were used …
