Releasement And Seduction: Heidegger And Baudrillard On The Preservation Of Illusion In The Epoch Of Obscenity, Marc Oliver D. Pasco
Releasement And Seduction: Heidegger And Baudrillard On The Preservation Of Illusion In The Epoch Of Obscenity, Marc Oliver D. Pasco
Philosophy Department Faculty Publications
This work interfaces the philosophies of Jean Baudrillard and Martin Heidegger. It hopes to contribute to both Heideggerian and Baudrillardian scholarship by employing Baudrillardian ideas in more effectively describing the historical happening of the so-called withdrawal of Being from man, which preoccupied much of Heidegger’s body of work. The work argues that by re-visiting an earlier idea of Baudrillard, which he termed as seduction, one finds a possible way of navigating the obscenity of the current epoch of Being. Akin to Heidegger’s idea of Gelassenheit or releasement, Baudrillard’s concept of seduction invites one to allow the real to once again …
Development Of Chemical Methods For Oligonucleotide Purification, Paramagnetic Labeling And Synthesis Of Dna-Based Advanced Materials, Muhan He
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis describes a chemical method for alternative oligonucleotide purification that is non-chromatographic and gel-free and allows to routinely synthesize and purify long functional RNA strands. The purification of long RNAs is based on the bio-orthogonal inverse electron demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) chemistry between trans-cyclooctene (TCO) and tetrazine (Tz). Target oligonucleotide strands are selectively tagged with Tz and can be captured and purified from the failure sequences with immobilized TCO. RNA strands are synthesized on solid support through a photolabile linker to avoid the loss of Tz tag. Purity of the isolated oligonucleotides was evaluated using gel electrophoresis, HPLC and mass …

Altered Water Relations, Selective Nutrient Uptake, And Reduced Na+ Flux Makehalopeplis Perfoliata An Obligate Halophyte, Sarwat Ghulam Rasool, Muhammad Zaheer Ahmed, Abdul Hameed, Bilquees Gul
Turkish Journal of Botany
Halopeplis perfoliata, a succulent halophyte of coastal marshy habitats, was grown in a greenhouse to study its adaptive responses in terms of growth, osmoregulation, and N-metabolism following one-month exposure to salinity (0, 150, 300, and 600 mmol L-1 NaCl). Biomass was optimal in 150 mmol L-1 NaCl with unaltered malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. On the other hand, biomass remained comparable to non-saline control with some increase in MDA in 300 and 600 mmol L-1 NaCl. Osmotic potential (?S ) was maintained up to 300 mmol L-1 NaCl that correlated with an increase in succulence (SC) and lower water deficit (WD), whereas …
The Intersection Between Multi-Voiced Narratives And First-Person Narratives Of War Fiction: Epistemology And The Meaning Of War, Prashant Patel
The Intersection Between Multi-Voiced Narratives And First-Person Narratives Of War Fiction: Epistemology And The Meaning Of War, Prashant Patel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The topic for this project concerns a critical rhetorical analysis of the correlation between texts of first-person narratives and multi-voiced narratives of the Vietnam War (1965-1975) and the American invasion of Iraq (2003-2011). Moreover, this project establishes a correlation between the textual design in these novels and concepts of epistemology that reside in the Western cannon of rhetorical theory. The theoretical framework that is incorporated within this study extracts concepts of (t)ruth from philosophical works such as Michel Foucault's Birth of the Clinic and Friedrich Nietzsche's On Truth and In a Nonmoral Sense. In comparison, I examine the concepts and …

The emergence of the new coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) was first seen in December 2019, which has spread rapidly and become a global pandemic. The number of cases of COVID-19 and its associated mortality have raised serious concerns worldwide. Early diagnosis of viral infection undoubtedly allows rapid intervention, disease management, and substantial control of the rapid spread of the disease. Currently, the standard approach for COVID-19 diagnosis globally is the RTqPCR test; however, the limited access to kits and associated reagents, the need for specialized lab equipment, and the need for highly skilled personnel has led to a detection slowdown. Recently, …

Locomotion generates adventitious sounds which enable detection and localization of predators and prey. Such sounds contain brisk changes or transients in amplitude. We investigated the hypothesis that ill-understood temporal specializations in binaural circuits subserve lateralization of such sound transients, based on different time of arrival at the ears (interaural time differences, ITDs). We find that Lateral Superior Olive (LSO) neurons show exquisite ITD-sensitivity, reflecting extreme precision and reliability of excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic potentials, in contrast to Medial Superior Olive neurons, traditionally viewed as the ultimate ITD-detectors. In vivo, inhibition blocks LSO excitation over an extremely short window, which, in …

Sample mislabeling or incorrect annotation has been a long-standing problem in biomedical research and contributes to irreproducible results and invalid conclusions. These problems are especially prevalent in multi-omics studies in which a large set of biological samples are characterized by multiple types of omics platforms at different times or different labs. While multi-omics studies have demonstrated tremendous value in understanding disease biology and improving patient outcomes, the complexity of these studies may increase opportunities for human error. Fortunately, the interrelated nature of the data collected in multi-omics studies can be exploited to facilitate the identification and, in some cases, correction …

Metastasis continues to be the primary cause of all cancer-related deaths despite the recent advancements in cancer treatments. To evaluate the role of mutations in overall survival (OS) and treatment outcomes, we analyzed 957 metastatic patients with seven major cancer types who had available molecular testing results with a FoundationOne CDx® panel. The most prevalent genes with somatic mutations were TP53, KRAS, APC, and LRP1B. In this analysis, these genes had mutation frequencies higher than in publicly available datasets. We identified that the somatic mutations were seven mutually exclusive gene pairs and an additional fifty-two co-occurring gene pairs. Mutations …

An Evaluation Of The Social Perceptions And Biological Efficacy Of Unmanned Aircraft Systems For Avian-Agriculture Conflict, Mallory Gyovai White
An Evaluation Of The Social Perceptions And Biological Efficacy Of Unmanned Aircraft Systems For Avian-Agriculture Conflict, Mallory Gyovai White
Biological Sciences
North Dakota sunflower producers face a dilemma when it comes to blackbirds (Icteridae). Migrating flocks produce localized damage to production, which results in some farmers with no bird issues, while others face total economic losses. A dynamic and humane crop protection tool is necessary to reduce blackbird damage in this broad-scale agriculture setting, as damage is actively occurring, while considering the protected status of blackbirds. This study examined a novel tool, unmanned aircraft systems (hereafter, UAS), through the lens of a social evaluation of farmers’ opinions and the biological impact on blackbird flock behavior. Farmers were very willing to allow …

Biochemical And Cellular Characterization Of Replication Factor A (Rfa) During Meiosis And The Dna Damage Response In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Angela Marie Adsero
Cellular and Molecular Biology
Replication Factor A (RFA) is an essential heterotrimeric single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) binding complex, comprised of Rfa1, Rfa2, and Rfa3 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. RFA is required for DNA replication, repair, recombination, and cell cycle regulation. RFA acts as a sensor of ssDNA, a common intermediate of these processes, and coordinates these processes through recruitment of proteins. For example, during the DNA damage response (DDR), RFA-coated ssDNA is necessary for the recruitment and activation of the sensor kinase Mec1. Additional checkpoint proteins, also recruited by RFA, are necessary for the downstream recruitment and activation of the effector kinase Rad53 that ultimately leads …

A First Flight In North Carolina—But Not At Kitty Hawk, Robert J. Wright
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The southern corn billbug is a univoltine insect most common in the Coastal Plains region of North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and South Carolina. However, this insect can also be found in the midwestern U.S. (Van Duyn and Wright 1999). Early in the growing season, the adults can be found feeding at the base of corn plants—typically with their head pointed downward (Fig. 1)—by inserting their beak into the base of the plant. They can kill or stunt seedlings or injure the developing leaves inside the plant, causing twisted leaves as they emerge or a series of small holes across the …

Synthesis Of Nest Predation Impacts Of Common Ravens On Sensitive Avian Species, Peter S. Coates, William C. Webb, Seth J. Dettenmaier, Seth M. Harju, David J. Delehanty
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Decades of mounting scientific evidence have revealed that common raven (Corvus corax; raven) population numbers have been increasing across nearly all regions of their geographic range in North America. Concomitantly, numerous native wildlife species have experienced elevated predation rates from ravens as populations have increased and expanded their range. Managers are concerned that increased raven predation of many threatened and endangered avian species in the U.S. and Canada during nesting periods may be hampering species recovery. We explored the literature to aggregate existing knowledge and evaluate the impacts of raven predation on nests and young of sensitive avian …

In January 2020, the outbreak of COVID-19 disrupted everyone’s life, and people who infected have various severity. Thus, we want to analyze whether people exposed to different ambient light at night (LAN) levels make them more susceptible to COVID-19 for our summer research. Besides the effects of LAN on immune functions, we also discussed the association of LAN and multiple cancers in seven states of Northeastern U.S. We used similar statistical and geographic analysis methods and separate them into …
Development Of Analytical Methods For Analysis Of Glycosaminoglycans And Their Mimetics In Human Plasma, Rawan M. Fayyad
Development Of Analytical Methods For Analysis Of Glycosaminoglycans And Their Mimetics In Human Plasma, Rawan M. Fayyad
Theses and Dissertations
Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are linear, polydisperse polysaccharides consisting of alternating amino sugars and either a uronic acid or galactose residue. They are ubiquitous components of the extracellular matrix and are present on cell surfaces and in basement membranes. GAGs are highly negatively charged as a result of many sulfate and carboxylic acid groups, and are extremely heterogeneous in both their structure and in their physicochemical properties. This complexity in structure is attributed to the alterations in residue types, glycosidic bond linkage, sulfation levels, sulfation positions, and chain lengths during biosynthesis. GAGs interact with a wide number of proteins and modulate various …

Rational Design Of Small Molecule Disruptors Of Protein-Protein Interactions: Pd-1/Pd-L1; C-Myc, Arid4b, Samuel Ofori
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) are vital to many biological processes, including gene expression, and immune reactions to pathogens. There are approximately 650,000 PPIs in humans with pertinent physiological functions. Aberrant expression of PPIs lead to improper function and contribute to a plethora of disease conditions including cancer. Thus, PPIs represent an enormous target space for drug discovery and chemical probes. Direct targeting of clinically relevant PPIs with small molecules remains an unmet medical need. Development of small-molecule inhibitors of PPIs is a challenging enterprise and in most cases considered undruggable due to large protein surfaces, lack of deep binding pockets and …
Design, Synthesis, And Anticancer Properties Of Ru(Ii) Complexes With Organometallic, “Expanded” Bipyridine, And O,O’-Chelating Ligands, Raphael Ryan
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Cancer is a worldwide public health crisis that requires new and improved drugs to be developed to extend survival rates and improve quality of life for the patient. Platinum-based drugs are used in approximately 50% of cancer treatment regimens. These drugs are highly effective in many kinds of cancer; however, cancers can develop platinum resistance and these drugs have troubling side effects that reduced their use and efficacy. To overcome these disadvantages, many other metals have been studied for their anticancer properties. Notably, the anticancer properties of ruthenium-based agents have drawn considerable attention with multiple ruthenium complexes entering clinical trials. …
